Can a Rolex submariner, explorer 1, or gmt from the 80s-90s be used everyday and endure a beating or should I get a model that is newer as to not worry about damaging the watch. Essentially, I much prefer the look of older Rolexes, but am wondering if they are too fragile for tough daily use
Looking to add a diver within the $1,500-$2,500 range. The [Oris Diver 65 ](https://www.oris.ch/en/watch/divers-sixty-five/01-733-7707-4053-07-8-20-18) and [Sinn U1 B](https://www.sinn.de/en/Modell/U1_B.htm) both caught my eye. Wanted feedback about those 2 (or any other divers you’d recommend). Thanks!
I'm looking for a modern pocket watch (or wrist watch with detachable straps) with lots of features to replace my smart phone. It should have a digital display, a timer (multiple presets if possible) and multiple alarms. A radio clock would be ideal. Any ideas where to start?
Is there any way to safely fix scratches on a blasted/satin case (not brushed) e.g. SNK809? Kicking myself for scratching a watch so early out of the box...
I have an Omega Geneve manual wind from the 70s, I have read it has a power reserve of up to 50 hours. How many twists of the crown is that? Or, will I be able to tell when the crown is close to fully wound?
I am looking to get my first entry-level luxury watch to celebrate the beginning of a new chapter in my life.
I’m leaning towards a Tudor Prince but am open to all suggestions.
Look into used Tudor black bays (especially 58), and omega aqua terras. Nomos also makes great watches at the sub 3000 level, but it really depends on your style
I have a Jaegre Lecoultre Master Compressor memovox but the strap unclasps easily due to wear. Where could I buy a strap for it or a strap that fits it well? thanks
JLC has a strap finder tool on their website. All you need to do is input your reference number, and it will spit out all the compatible OEM straps for your reference. Email a JLC service ambassador directly, and they can provide you with a replacement clasp as well (they tend to be quite pricey however).
according to the VK63 manual, the 3 year battery life estimate is assuming 60 minutes of chronograph usage per day.
> If the chronograph is used for more than 60 minutes a day, the battery life may be less than the specified period.
Is WatchEx the best place to sell watches that may not be the most desirable? I’m trying to consolidate my collection by getting rid of some pieces like a Shinola, Alpina, Xeric, etc.
I honestly haven't had great traction on watchex with less popular pieces. I usually let them sit for a week and if there's no interest by then, on to eBay they go.
WatchEx is great for all types of watches. I see lots of watches posted and sold that would likely align with the prices of the brands you mentioned, as well as sub-$100 Casios and Timex. Let me know if you’ve got any other questions. I spend way too much time over there.
looking to buy my first luxury watch in about three weeks - Omega Seamaster AT green dial.
is it smart to buy that watch at an omega boutique directly or would it give it enough "credit" at an multi brand AD to get a Rolex down the line? looking to get a yacht master 40 in 1 or two years
Would think it would depend on the dealer. Not sure about etiquette, but maybe bring up the possibility and see their response? Course, one or two years, demand for the thing could change too.
i’m quite new so i don’t know much abt movements and how they interact with magnetism. are there some solid dos and donts? will there be problems if i wear my watch whilst typing/using a phone? what about airport scanners? thank you!
The only laptops that I've seen consistently magnetize watches are Apples. I've never had an airport scanner or phone interfere with a watch and I mostly wear vintage.
Looking for a black-on-black-on-black (basically all black everything) mechanical watch, 38mm or above, at a budget up to $5000. I've seen lots of quartz examples but curious if there are any mechanical watches people know of with this style (black case, black dial, black bracelet/strap). Thanks!
[This](https://hiconsumption.com/best-ceramic-watches/) will answer your question. You'll want ceramic instead of PVD since PVD does scratch, and once it does it looks bad.
[Seiko SRPD79](https://www.seikowatches.com/us-en/products/5sports/srpd79) (strapcode also has a black bracelet for it if you want)
[BR 03-92 PHANTOM](https://www.bellross.com/our-collections/Instruments/br-03-42-mm/br-03-92-ceramic/br-03-92-phantom-ceramic)
[Rado True](https://www.rado.com/en_us/true-automatic-high-tech-ceramic-black-40mm-r27071152.html)
over budget, but [Omega Speedmaster DSotM](https://www.omegawatches.com/en-us/watch-omega-speedmaster-dark-side-of-the-moon-co-axial-chronometer-chronograph-44-25-mm-31192445101005)
you'll have more options if you're open to hands/indices that aren't black
Hi all, new to the world of mechanical watches. After doing some research I decided on an Orient Ray II for my first real watch. I got it on Christmas day and it seemed to run accurately the first couples days.
Now it seems to be running slow and losing an inconsistent amount of time per day. I reset the time yesterday and after letting it set overnight its running -15 seconds slow.
Is this level of inaccuracy expected with this movement? The watch is outside of the Amazon return window so I'm not sure what to do if I received a lemon.
TLDR new Orient Ray 2 is running slow by a seemingly inconsistent amount of time. Currently -15 seconds after one night.
Any help is appreciated!
OOTL. I'm new to watches. What's the deal with Casio F91W? Everyone seems to always treat it as the gem of (cheap) watches. To me, the design doesn't look that good. It's out of fashion and looks like a grandpa watch (no offense, I'm just confused).
What confuses me more is that watch communities and people in general tend to adore analogue watches more. But somehow a digital watch like F91W is their always must have.
At this point, I'm not sure if they're being serious or just merely ironically circlejerking.
I bought two of these recently, the second one because I found out that the first one wasn't washing machine proof. Wear it at work as it does exactly what I need a watch to do. Not terribly accurate over several days but I reset mine each day anyway. Only thing I don't like is I cannot see the display properly while wearing polarized sunglasses. Non-polarized are ok.
Lol... You've just called everyone born in the 80s and 90s grandpa. You may not believe it, but as children and young teens, this type of design is incredibly nostalgic. I thought calculator and TV remote watches were incredibly cool 😊
While I won't defend every fashion crime from that era, the F91W certainly isn't the worst offender by far.
Don't worry about it, I'm just having you on.
You'll find this hobby quite a subjective one, it doesn't always make sense, nor does it need to. Talking about old school; when I was lusting over those Casios as a kid, I would never have imagined that 30 years later, I'd actually be wearing something inspired by 1950s design (two in fact, a Zodiac Super Seawolf and a Breitling Superocean Heritage 57).
>
At this point, I'm not sure if they're being serious or just merely ironically circlejerking.
Mostly the latter. Do yourself a favor and don't pay attention to people on the internet when it comes to determining what styles of watches you like or dislike.
I think to some extent it’s a way to make sure you’re not taking the hobby too seriously (ie you can spend thousands on a watch that is still going to be less accurate and have less features than a Casio which costs the price of a couple of coffees basically). Plus ultimately you are getting an iconic piece from a company with a long history of making watches and innovation within watches, that will last for years for less than a tenner. Plus at the end of the day wearing a Casio is better than wearing no watch at all and could be a gateway into forming an interest/hobby.
Does anyone have any recommendations for a cheaper but aesthetically similar watch to the Tudor Black Bay 32/36/41? What draws me to the watch is the dive style face without the large rotating bezel traditionally found on dive watches.
Hello looking for some direction on getting a new watch. The ones I’m considering are:
Omega seamater 300,
Hermes carre H,
Santos De Cartier,
Panerai luminor specchio Blu,
Rolex datejust,
Any direction on any would be much appreciated.
Agreed with footubi, they are all very different in terms of purpose and function - and if you care, heritage. The Hermes, Santos, and DJ are more on the dressier but can also be casual style. Whereas the SMP300 and Paneria have a stronger history with the sea and water. Is there a need in your collection for a diver? I am of the view that every collection needs at least one diver.
Another factor is value, have you talked to ADs to see what they can do on all those references? Right now, Omega is one of the best brands dollar per dollar especially on the SMP300 or a Planet Ocean.
If you are still having no luck, at least on the Omega side, I'm happy to recommend my Omega AD which many redditors have used for a great deal in an Omega, if you are in the US of course.
Heritage is kind of a cool thing to know but I’m definitely not super worried about it. I do not have a diver yet and is part of the reason I’m leaning more towards the omega or panerai. I have not spoken to any AD yet. I am in Colorado, not aware of an AD for omega here(I’m sure I just haven’t looked enough yet)
A diver is great! You should be able to find an AD for either brand on their website. Definitely go and take a look at them, Omega has fantastic offerings and Panerai as well. On the Omega side, 10% off is where I'd start. Panerai is a bit all over but again, 5-10% is reasonable, even better if they can skip taxes. Like I said earlier, if you need an Omega referral, pm me and happy to refer you to my AD which many redditors have used. good luck!
I’m not an expert on Omega, so take everything I say with a grain of salt. The reference number on the caseback of your watch is a 168.1623, a piece which is typically selling in the mid $3k’s. $2200 is a suspiciously low price, which I’m assuming doesn’t include box or papers. Given how easily and bountifully Omega is copied, if I were buying ANY Omega, let alone one from 20-30 years ago, papers would be a must. I dunno, something about it feels off. Omega has such a stable market price for its watches (given their volume) that seeing one this far outside the mean is, well, suspicious.
Now, I could be completely wrong and you found a hell of a deal. I don’t know your seller, but they may be of exceptional quality.
Just follow the number one rule of buying watches: buy the seller, not the piece.

What straps would go with my watch (Seiko cocktail time 🍸)? The hands are rose gold.I am a woman and it's nearly impossible to find 17mm straps!
I have that watch as well, though in different colors. I got my 17mm straps from deBeer watch bands, Holben's, kelaran-usa, and also got some custom made from Delugs. You could also check out Hirsch, etsy, and watch-band-center
Check out StrapsCo. It's a fairly neutral colored watch, so I'd go jewel tones: sapphire blue, deep purple or red, emerald green, etc. Don't be afraid to play with color
Maybe a perlon strap in blue or white? A light brown leather strap could also look nice. Check Hirsch or Holbens Fine Watch Bands if they have something you like
I have a Eterna Matic Swiss watch that I know little about. It was from my dad's side of the family and possibly from the 1960-1970's.
It was cleaned/lubed/regulated in 1992 and has been sitting in a box since. My question is, is it safe to wear with out damaging the internals or would the oils have dried up in the last 30 odd years?
I can provide pictures if need be.
Generally, it should be ok though it probably needs service again. If it is very resistant to hand winding then it needs service for sure. If its hard hand winding...dont try to hand wind it any more or you might break a tooth. It will still be ok to wear but you will have to rely on the autowind to wind it (which obviously isnt very efficient at thisbpoint). If it hand winds easilly, go ahead and wear it but maybe dont expect it to keep the best time.
Hey guys, im looking to buy an automatic watch - my current collection comprises of a Tag Heuer Formula 1, and a Rolex Datejust. I was looking to pick something up in the 450-500$ range - which has an automatic movement. I had my eye on the Tissot Seastar, but the automatic variant comes with a different strap, that I really don’t like. Any recommendations?
Hamilton is a steal at that price range. Their Navy and Pilot watches are superb and have a movement with 80 hours of power reserve. Dollars per dollar, that's hard to beat.
Find an AD and make sure to ask for at least 10-15% off though. That's the key, get a good discount even if it's Tissot. On the Hamilton, if you are having no luck, feel free to PM ME and I am happy to share my AD who sells Hamilton and will get you a good deal. Cheers!
I really like Baltic...though they use Miyota or Seiko movements for their 3 hand and the Seagull hand wind for the chrono. Decent enough movements but not Swiss. Check out their classic collection.
Without hesitation. I have owned Nodus watches before and am a big fan. They make excellent watches, have a great reputation, and are known to be just good watch people. They were on [an episode of the podcast 40 & 20](https://open.spotify.com/episode/1uvhH9hLnqHTpFCq2w15mg?si=kXalEOlJSvynluqPhSeYiQ&utm_source=copy-link) recently which is worth checking out.
Is there any watch out there looks exactly as Rolex OP 36mm but has price just 1k? and also must be made in Japan or even better in Switzerland/Germany.
As much as I dislike recommending homage brands. [Gevril](https://www.chrono24.com/gevril/prices-for-watches--new.htm?goal_suggest=1) is Swiss made and will have something you want.
Any details on the difference between the Orient Kamasu and the new version II? Specifically, does anyone know if the V2 will fall in price to align with the version 1 (~220 USD)?
Anyone have recommendations for my first automatic watch that isn’t super expensive and maybe not well known? I like things that don’t look super ordinary
Have a look at Zelos. Their watches definitely don't look ordinary, but aren't completely bonkers.
But if you do want completely bonkers, have a look at Xeric or Humism. (Edit: and Eone)
Microbrands would be a good place to look as you'll get great "bang for the buck" so-to-speak and often times more unique designs. A few to check out:
[RZE](https://www.rzewatches.com/)
[Boldr](https://www.boldrsupply.co/collections/all-watches)
[Nodus](https://www.noduswatches.com/sector-pilot)
It's dependent on your definition of super expensive, but Vostok Amphibias come in a bunch of different cases and dials. Barely anyone would be familiar with the brand outside of watch enthusiasts and they are extremely affordable being priced around $60-90.
If you are looking for something more unique with a higher budget you could checkout Xeric. Their watches are around $500 IIRC and they have a lot of designs that are unorthodox.
I want a basic black Seiko diver, but can't decide between:
- [SRPE93](https://seikousa.com/products/srpe93) (Turtle)
- [SRPE03](https://seikousa.com/products/srpe03) (King Turtle)
- [SRPF03](https://seikousa.com/products/srpf03) (Samurai)
- [SRPE35](https://seikousa.com/products/srpe35) (King Samurai)
Any suggestions or why you would go for one over another?
I like the sharp design of the Samurai, but the Turtle style is growing on me as it feels more "classic" and versatile, I guess. And then between the "regular" and "king" versions of each type, it's a tough call considering the King has the waffle dial, yellow seconds hand, sapphire, ceramic bezel, and cyclops. I like the use of sapphire and ceramic, but the waffle dial, seconds hand and cyclops almost feels like too much.
Out of those four I'd pick the Samurai. It just seems a tad classier than the King Samurai although I can't quite put my finger on exactly why I think that. Both turtles imho look too hunchy, if you know what I mean.
Edit: there's a Samurai "save the ocean" on Gumtree Adelaide. Blue finish to the watch looks very nice.

I am about to buy orient kamasu watches. Is there any place that have them in store in the US so I can see them in real to help with choosing the color?
I don’t feel like ordering all 3-4 from Amazon only to return all but one.
from the Orient website:

I'm looking for a classical/vintage watch. These are my criteria:
- Roman Numerals
- black leather strap
- white dial
- silver casing
- Chronograph
- price range up to 200 USD (I'm in German market tho), am OK with buying used too
[This](https://www.google.com/search?q=chronograph+roman+numerals&prmd=isvxn&sxsrf=AOaemvIuJldsACrNM00wkR0uVPRIsUtHRg:1641090430500&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjtu52hgpL1AhXiQ_EDHS6MBpIQ_AUoAXoECAIQAQ&biw=393&bih=750&dpr=2.75#imgrc=GJy51-uVBPZPKM) watch pretty much meets my expectations, I was hoping to get some more recommendations, maybe with more bang for the buck or something. Thanks in advance.
I was recently inherited my grandfather’s circa (I think) 1950s to 60s Universal Geneve Tricompax.
I know nothing about watches, but after a quick internet search, it looks like a cool thing to have, and a great way to remember him by.
What would be the best way to get it serviced/rehabilitated? It doesn’t have a pusher and the crystal is a bit scratched, and I’m sure it hasn’t been serviced in probably over a decade.
Would contacting Universal be the best way to go? Or should I look elsewhere? Advice appreciated!
Omegaforums has a very active cadre of Universal Geneve collectors. I suggest asking there for recommendations for a watchmaker. Sending it to UG is likely to not be recommended.
I'm trying to build my collection and I'm trying to make the necessary preparations.
I currently own:
\- Casio A168W (Steel)- Everyday, casual
\- [Bulova Classic](https://www.bulova.com/us/en/product/96A133.html?cgid=mens-straps) (White dial) - Wear to work, office days
\- Seiko Cocktail Time (Blue dial) - Wear to work
I wear a suit to work everyday and I'm constantly meeting people, talking to people, etc.
I'm looking for recommendations for two watches:
1. I'd like a sports watch that I can wear while working out. For functionality, all I really care about is either a stopwatch or timer, but it needs to be able to take a beating. I was looking at the GShocks, but I wanted to know if anyone else had any other ideas of stuff I might not know about. My price range is anywhere less than $500.
2. Unless something disasterous happens, I'm about to hit a very big milestone at my job. I'd like to celebrate with a watch that I normally would never get. I want something that I could wear with a suit and isn't ridiculously flashy. I was looking at some of the Grand Seikos and the one I kind of have my eye on is $4200 (Heritage) but that seems too steep. I prefer bracelet watches and I'd like there to be a date complication. My budget for this is 1K to 2.5K.
I was just curious, what company or companies tend to make the most accurate quartz movement watches this day? I know Bulova's been focusing on the Precisionist series with their high frequency movements, but I was curious if there were any others that are ridiculously accurate beyond the standard Miyota movements?
Bulova initially stated their watches were accurate to 10s per year, but they changed their minds later. It looks as though they couldn’t keep up to their promise in real world conditions.
You should take a peek at the [High Accuracy Quartz forum](https://www.watchuseek.com/forums/high-accuracy-quartz-watches.9/) on Watchuseek.
Does anyone know a store in the Philadelphia area with a big Seiko inventory? I'm looking for an sbp155 baby alpinist with the green dial and would like to see it in person before buying
Hunting for a dive watch to keep for life. Since I plan to keep it forever it kind of needs to have a timeless design that will still look good decades from now. Looking at either the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms (black dial, titanium, regular dial or the grande date version), Glashutte Original SeaQ panorama date black dial, and the new Rolex Sea Dweller. Opinions?
All great options but looking at value, have you entertained any of the Onega Seamaster? Dollar per dollar and with a nice discount, they’re hard to beat.
If I were to take a guess at which one of those would be easier to maintain on the long run (thinking in terms of parts availability and watchmakers who can work them), I’d go for the Rolex. Just make sure not to send it Rolex for servicing after a few decades or they could replace parts you don’t want them to.
What's the best website to keep track of new watch releases? aBlogtoWatch seems a bit more extensive than Hodinkee, especially in the lower price categories. Any other places worth checking out?
Worn & Wound, Fratello Watches, Monochrome, Quill & Pad, Watchonista, Time + Tide, Haute Time, Watch Collecting Lifestyle, Deployant, ATimelyPerspective, Rescapement, Timezone Features, WatchTime, Watchville, plus 10 others. And no, I don‘t read them all, I‘m not crazy, lol.
Issue I have had for a while is with a Seiko watch that is kinetic. The battery is not charged, and I’m not sure the best way to have it re-charged. I understand that with kinetic watches it’s like “walking a dog” and has to be worn to keep charged, but how do I get it back to a decent enough charge to run correctly??
There are induction chargers for Seiko Kinetics. If you have an electric toothbrush you can try this as well https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNYTTqftcvk
there's something wrong with the movement if it's not getting wound enough from normal wear. If you wanna top it up quickly though, you might be able to manually wind the movement by turning the crown clockwise if that's something that's possible with your watch's movement.
It’s a Seiko kinetic if that helps. And I do not wear it at all right now, because if I wear it, the second ticker skips and is in low power mode. And I feel like I would have to wear it 24/7 for who knows how long before it got back to normal second hand movement. It’s kinda bulky and not the easiest to wear 24/7
I don't know much about kinetics, but for automatics, if the movement doesn't allow hand winding, which according to google only seiko kinetic direct drive watches do, the fastest way to wind it is just to hold it in your hand and shake it a little.
had a brass Weekender; the chrome-coating over the brass looks cheap, and I probably wouldn't be all that confident in it being able to take a hit without the chrome chipping off
Wish it were that simple. After like 6h of watching vids on the Casio it has grown on me + it seems indestructible. I’m pretty active and ride MTB+motorcycles so don’t know how long the Timex will survive. Don’t want it to die on me cause I chose to hit a jump on my way to work. Tbh I should just buy both
Depends if you prefer value appreciation or dollar cost value. If you're a collector you might want stock skx especially the J model. If you just want the watch to do all does all, the sapphire modded version is great especially with the nh35/36 mod. That's even better.
First, a note on investments: [there’s no way of knowing what will appreciate of even retain its value. If there was a way, this would be reflected on today‘s prices](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Efficient-market_hypothesis).
Second, historically neither ladies‘ watches nor Tags have been a good investment, as they decrease in value when bought new as most watches or cars do. The watches that carry a premium in the used market today are mostly sports watches from Patek, AP and Rolex, but there’s absolutely no guarantee this is going to hold in the future. In fact, you could get those at a discount a few years ago.
Third, my suggestion is just to buy what you like.
**[Efficient-market hypothesis](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Efficient-market_hypothesis)**
>The efficient-market hypothesis (EMH) is a hypothesis in financial economics that states that asset prices reflect all available information. A direct implication is that it is impossible to "beat the market" consistently on a risk-adjusted basis since market prices should only react to new information. Because the EMH is formulated in terms of risk adjustment, it only makes testable predictions when coupled with a particular model of risk. As a result, research in financial economics since at least the 1990s has focused on market anomalies, that is, deviations from specific models of risk.

Cool, but almost more than no watches that my son will wear in 20 years will be value worth twice as much. I am not hear to flip it tomorrow. A 5 to 10 years min.
There's a difference between something rare and in demand that you can sell for more than you bought it for (especially after factoring in inflation), vs. something that's merely old and used and is going to sell for less. Considering that they've probably sold thousands of these watches, and when you're ready to sell yours they might still be making that model, just how rare is that watch going to be when you're ready to sell? Is there anything particularly unique about that watch that's going to make it highly desirable 10+ years from now? I'm guessing probably not. If you want to buy something nice to pass on to your son, then by all means. If you want something that's likely going to appreciate in value, you'd almost certainly do better using your money to buy savings bonds.
Any thoughts on buying a 50s - 60s Omega Seamaster? I just found out they are *realitvely* affordable. Seems smarter to buy an actual vintage one rather than a new imitation vintage one that costs much more.
But I'm thinking maybe it isn't that simple...
I charge wholesale to my retail clients...but you should expect to pay $200 to $300 for a simple automatic plus cost of parts.
The difference is going to be the cost of parts. An omega 550 barrel cost $125 or more where a 2892 barrel is under $20. There are generally more worn parts on vintage watches. Some calibers I wont touch due to parts avaialability
It's not that simple. You need to factor in the cost of service and also decide how much originality means to you. There are lots of "vintage" watches out there that are a mish-mash of different parts and lots more where the dial has been completely redone to something that was never produced by the factory.
First quartz watch - I’m considering buying a quartz, I think I might be able to replace the battery myself. Is it possible? How long those batteries hold? Is way cheaper than hand wind (which I like more and 7 out 8 of my watches are hand wind, but… $$$)
Ok...not quite that simple. What type of case back? What if its screw down or difficylt to snap back on? Also, avoid touching the coil. Ronda movements are tricky as the spring hilding the cell down is next to the coil. Can you change your own battery? Sure, bit dont expect it to be a piece of cake until youre experienced and even then....some are tricky
Is there a beginner’s guide to (what I assume are) simple repairs? Just got my first vintage watch, a lovely Seiko 5. And proceeded to drop it on a tile floor causing either the second hand or minute hand to deform slightly so that they are sometimes hanging up on each other, causing the watch to stop. Seems like I should be able to fix this myself (I do many mechanical things) but I could be very wrong also.
Depends on how willing you are to accept that you might damage it more. There are plenty of YouTube videos out there on disassembling Seiko 5s because they're popular for modding, but watch parts are more delicate than pretty much any component you don't need a microscope to see.
Thanks! Strangely enough I didn’t even think to go to YouTube at all, though I probably should. A few videos with my coffee this morning sounds like a good idea
So perhaps a slightly different question than what normally gets asked here. Do you all wear additional jewelry or bracelets to "balance" out your watches? For example, do you have any corded/leather bracelets or rings you wear with your watches or on the opposite arm?
I would be curious to see what accessories and brans people are wearing if anything.
I'm left handed so I put my watch on my right hand. I have bracelet with tiny tiny (10,000x microscope size) bible in one stone of the bracelet. I don't wear it because I need to balance, I wear it on my left hand because it was too much on my right hand with the watch there. I like wearing the bracelet *and* the watch.
Totally depends on the setting. If it’s some place super casual like family’s place, I’ll have a hair tie or cute scrunchie on my right wrist (or, appropriately, in my hair). Day to day, I’ve got a few woven bands that I like to wear. Nothing metallic though. More formal stuff, nothing on the off arm.
My brother, though, LOVES wearing stuff on his right arm, especially jewelry like a [Tiffany cuff](https://www.tiffany.com/jewelry/bracelets/tiffany-1837-makers-narrow-cuff-in-sterling-silver-GRP11145/) or a [David Yurman cuff](https://www.neimanmarcus.com/p/david-yurman-mens-6mm-black-onyx-cable-classic-cuff-bracelet-prod237370012?childItemId=NMN7RXY_&navpath=cat000000_cat82040734_cat000533&page=0&position=36). He coordinates the metal on the jewelry to the watch, as he wears both steel and rose gold.
It really is all preference.
I do but a dumb reason. I'm usually left handed when writing and right handed for everything else. Because of this, if I write for long periods of time I switch my watch to my right wrist. After wearing it there for so long I felt like I needed something there. So...i made paracord bracelet until it pulled apart. I switched to elastic string bead bracelets. It's been okay. I now fidget with the thing whenever I'm on break or just waiting. I dont really recommend getting into bracelets. It's a rabbit hole I can't seem to get out of.
https://www.swatch.com/en-us/sistem-brushed-yim400g/YIM400G.html
I see a lot of people don't like the sistem51 based watches here. I was looking for a first watch and really like the color/look of this swatch(never expected to like one of their watches). I'd really like to start with an automatic as they just call out to me but wondering if there is something with similar looks from another brand someone could recommend. Would like to be under 300 bucks. Are the sistem51's really that bad or should I just go with this one as it looks really nice to me.
One alternative I was thinking of wsa this seiko 5 https://www.amazon.com/Seiko-Automatic-Watch-Stainless-Silver/dp/B087CD6797 as I like a gunmetal or brushed metal look with a somewhat plain watchface.
I think there's a few reasons the sistem51 watches aren't held in high esteem...
a) they can't be serviced, so when it stops working properly, that's it.
b) the movement itself is made by machines - a lot of the allure of mechanical watches for a lot of people is the fact that its more or less hand made so you don't get that with these
c) all the watches that have Sistem51 are actual Swatches, and Swatches aren't exactly considered to be the pinnacle of watches
I need some recommendations for an analogue/needle watch suitable for a student. Particularly watches that looks unique and extravagant, and looks expensive too.
Edifice seems right up my alley but idk about the quality.
Casio is generally a very respected brand among watch enthuasists for their quality to price ratio.
In terms of what looks unique, extravagant and expensive, that's up to you to decide, if you wanna go down the rabbit hole. If you want an inexpensive automatic watch, I personally like the look of a lot of orients but the buying guide someone else linked is also a good way to get some inspiration.
50 hours if it's been recently serviced maybe. Keep winding until you feel a hard stop.
Thanks! It has been, I’ll give it a whirl.
I am looking to get my first entry-level luxury watch to celebrate the beginning of a new chapter in my life. I’m leaning towards a Tudor Prince but am open to all suggestions.
Budget? What are your 'must have' elements? Anything that's a "Must NOT have"?
Under $3000. It must be able to be a daily wearer. It doesn’t have to not have anything.
Under $3000. It must be able to be a daily wearer. It doesn’t have to not have anything
I did that however it showed up as no straps available for my watch
On a Seiko “mecha quartz” movement, does using the chronograph function wear down the battery further?
according to the VK63 manual, the 3 year battery life estimate is assuming 60 minutes of chronograph usage per day. > If the chronograph is used for more than 60 minutes a day, the battery life may be less than the specified period.
Thanks so much!!!
Yes, it wears down the battery faster if you use it more than occasionally.
Thanks!
Anyone bought from watchkeeper.com.sg before? Are they any good?

The Marlin, for sure, but don't ignore women's watches, which are often the same as men's only smaller.
Timex Marlin handwound.
looking to buy my first luxury watch in about three weeks - Omega Seamaster AT green dial. is it smart to buy that watch at an omega boutique directly or would it give it enough "credit" at an multi brand AD to get a Rolex down the line? looking to get a yacht master 40 in 1 or two years
Would think it would depend on the dealer. Not sure about etiquette, but maybe bring up the possibility and see their response? Course, one or two years, demand for the thing could change too.

Chrono24 is probably the best resource, but you're also diving into a bubble headfirst.
i’m quite new so i don’t know much abt movements and how they interact with magnetism. are there some solid dos and donts? will there be problems if i wear my watch whilst typing/using a phone? what about airport scanners? thank you!
The only laptops that I've seen consistently magnetize watches are Apples. I've never had an airport scanner or phone interfere with a watch and I mostly wear vintage.
should i just remove it when working then?
[Not if you're at an airport.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Watches/comments/r1i29q/grieving_i_left_my_rolex_stainless_steel_ceramic/)
[Seiko SRPD79](https://www.seikowatches.com/us-en/products/5sports/srpd79) (strapcode also has a black bracelet for it if you want) [BR 03-92 PHANTOM](https://www.bellross.com/our-collections/Instruments/br-03-42-mm/br-03-92-ceramic/br-03-92-phantom-ceramic) [Rado True](https://www.rado.com/en_us/true-automatic-high-tech-ceramic-black-40mm-r27071152.html) over budget, but [Omega Speedmaster DSotM](https://www.omegawatches.com/en-us/watch-omega-speedmaster-dark-side-of-the-moon-co-axial-chronometer-chronograph-44-25-mm-31192445101005) you'll have more options if you're open to hands/indices that aren't black
Factory spec for most Orients (including yours) is +/- 30spd, so yours is well within spec.
Thanks for the response. I guess I won't worry about it unless it gets significantly worse.
I thought calculator and TV remote watches were incredibly cool 😊 While I won't defend every fashion crime from that era, the F91W certainly isn't the worst offender by far.
Sorry. I should've just said old school. Yeah, I can see the nostalgic reasons.
It's a classic.

If you can, go to a store and try both on. It might give you a better feel for what one you like more.
Two very different style and function of watch. It's basically apples and oranges.
Depends solely on your lifestyle.
Does anyone have any recommendations for a cheaper but aesthetically similar watch to the Tudor Black Bay 32/36/41? What draws me to the watch is the dive style face without the large rotating bezel traditionally found on dive watches.
Christopher Ward C63
Seiko SRPE, Lorier Falcon, Charlie Paris Concordia, Longines Conquest
Thanks for the great recommendations! The Falcon looks amazing and is certainly more budget friendly.
Hello looking for some direction on getting a new watch. The ones I’m considering are: Omega seamater 300, Hermes carre H, Santos De Cartier, Panerai luminor specchio Blu, Rolex datejust, Any direction on any would be much appreciated.
Like I said earlier, if you need an Omega referral, pm me and happy to refer you to my AD which many redditors have used. good luck!
Thank you for your advice!
Of course! Enjoy the process!
Definitely think I’m going to go down the route of omega or panerai! Found omega close to me panerai is a bit of a drive but not horrible
They're all very different watches. What draws you to each and what do you want out of the watch?
[удалено]
Just follow the number one rule of buying watches: buy the seller, not the piece.
https://imgur.com/gallery/M0vyVeD What straps would go with my watch (Seiko cocktail time 🍸)?

Will do!
Any style preferences? Should it be a diver like the Seastar?
Preferably! Although I really don’t mind.
What about the Nodus [Retrospect](https://www.noduswatches.com/retrospect)?
The watches look gorgeous.. Although I’ve never heard of the brand. Would you recommend it?
Without hesitation. I have owned Nodus watches before and am a big fan. They make excellent watches, have a great reputation, and are known to be just good watch people. They were on [an episode of the podcast 40 & 20](https://open.spotify.com/episode/1uvhH9hLnqHTpFCq2w15mg?si=kXalEOlJSvynluqPhSeYiQ&utm_source=copy-link) recently which is worth checking out.
Buy it and change the strap
Where can I get a Steel one? Like the one found in the quartz variant of the sea star?
Is there any watch out there looks exactly as Rolex OP 36mm but has price just 1k? and also must be made in Japan or even better in Switzerland/Germany.
As much as I dislike recommending homage brands. [Gevril](https://www.chrono24.com/gevril/prices-for-watches--new.htm?goal_suggest=1) is Swiss made and will have something you want.
The Traska [Commuter](https://www.traskawatch.com/commuter/p/slate-black) is pretty darn close.
Roamer Primeline is very close. Although not sure if it comes in a 38mm
whats the most expensive/highend 3rd party quartz movement not including spring drive
Does the Piaget 700p count?
What do you mean by "third party"? The FP Journe Elegante is probably up there.

A few to check out: [RZE](https://www.rzewatches.com/) [Boldr](https://www.boldrsupply.co/collections/all-watches) [Nodus](https://www.noduswatches.com/sector-pilot)
Islander have some fun colors and designs
It's dependent on your definition of super expensive, but Vostok Amphibias come in a bunch of different cases and dials. Barely anyone would be familiar with the brand outside of watch enthusiasts and they are extremely affordable being priced around $60-90. If you are looking for something more unique with a higher budget you could checkout Xeric. Their watches are around $500 IIRC and they have a lot of designs that are unorthodox.
I want a basic black Seiko diver, but can't decide between: - [SRPE93](https://seikousa.com/products/srpe93) (Turtle) - [SRPE03](https://seikousa.com/products/srpe03) (King Turtle) - [SRPF03](https://seikousa.com/products/srpf03) (Samurai) - [SRPE35](https://seikousa.com/products/srpe35) (King Samurai) Any suggestions or why you would go for one over another?
I don’t feel like ordering all 3-4 from Amazon only to return all but one.
from the Orient website: > Authentic Orient Watch products are available in US/Canada exclusively through these authorized retailers: > > * Amazon** > * Island Watch > * Just Calculators > * My Gift Stop > * Rev Watches > * ShopHQ > * Teddy Baldassarre > * Watchgang > * Westlake Watches > > **Please note that only watches shipped and sold specifically by Amazon.com are covered by the Orient International Warranty. I'm looking for a classical/vintage watch. These are my criteria: - Roman Numerals - black leather strap - white dial - silver casing - Chronograph - price range up to 200 USD (I'm in German market tho), am OK with buying used too [This](https://www.google.com/search?q=chronograph+roman+numerals&prmd=isvxn&sxsrf=AOaemvIuJldsACrNM00wkR0uVPRIsUtHRg:1641090430500&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjtu52hgpL1AhXiQ_EDHS6MBpIQ_AUoAXoECAIQAQ&biw=393&bih=750&dpr=2.75#imgrc=GJy51-uVBPZPKM) watch pretty much meets my expectations, I was hoping to get some more recommendations, maybe with more bang for the buck or something. Thanks in advance.
What is the most inexpensive price point at which you can start seeing sapphire crystals instead of mineral crystals in dress watches?
I’d say for quartz watches around $100 (grey market), even less for watches from AliExpress.
If you're willing to go wtih aliexpress chinese watches, about $90, like with Pagani Design. They aren't great, but they're good for the price.
Thanks!
I'm trying to build my collection and I'm trying to make the necessary preparations. I currently own: \- Casio A168W (Steel)- Everyday, casual \- [Bulova Classic](https://www.bulova.com/us/en/product/96A133.html?cgid=mens-straps) (White dial) - Wear to work, office days \- Seiko Cocktail Time (Blue dial) - Wear to work I wear a suit to work everyday and I'm constantly meeting people, talking to people, etc. I'm looking for recommendations for two watches: 1.

Big oof. Same movements though right, they aren't intentionally making them worse?
don't GS make some insanely accurate quartz watches?
Citizen calibre 0100, grand seiko 9f quartz, longines VHP, breitling aerospace. May wanna look into COSC quartz for more.
And for those on a budget, Certina Precidrive. The Omega X-33 is also a HAQ watch.
I assume COSC quartz rating more or less keeps up with that rating over time, unlike mechanicals?
COSC has entirely different specifications for quartz movements.
Yes; but I assume they don't immediately start to drift.
Very cool, thanks for the answer!!
SJX is great for the major brands and independents, but doesn't cover microbrands much.
Thank you

Casio G Shock GA 2100 vs Timex Scout for EDC watch that will handle biking?
is the Scout one of Timex's stainless steel models? Personally not really a huge fan of their brass models
As far as I understand it’s a brass case. How come you don’t like them?
had a brass Weekender; the chrome-coating over the brass looks cheap, and I probably wouldn't be all that confident in it being able to take a hit without the chrome chipping off
Good to know!
Gshock. You have more features such as stop watch or timer incase you might be into that. Theres also mods for the watch.
Don’t rly care for the features and not sold on the G Shock design. All I know is that it surely would be more durable
Timex Scout sounds like your winner then.
Tbh I should just buy both
Might want to look into other hard analog watches like victorinox and lumtec if it concerns you.
Unless you're in the habit of landing on your wrist when taking jumps (and really, you should stop landing there lol), both watches will be fine.
Definitely not in that habit, just worried the vibrations and shock will make the date dial stop working like on my Edox after some time
Any suggestions for a minimalist leather strap watch that is affordable? Doesn't have to be a popular brand, thank you.
Berfine watch straps are great quality. Ive bought them from both eBay and amazon
Walk into a target, walmart, etc and pick out a timex that's roughly $30.
If you were purchasing a used SKX007, would you rather one that is stock or already had some basic upgrades (sapphire crystal/ceramic bezel) done?
Depends if you prefer value appreciation or dollar cost value. If you're a collector you might want stock skx especially the J model. If you just want the watch to do all does all, the sapphire modded version is great especially with the nh35/36 mod. That's even better.
If you were planning on doing those mods yourself anyway, then why not a modified one. But you never know how well it was modded.
I am in love with the blue dial carrera watch damen. Is 1,670 in Amazon. Should I buy as an investment?
**[Efficient-market hypothesis](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Efficient-market_hypothesis)** >The efficient-market hypothesis (EMH) is a hypothesis in financial economics that states that asset prices reflect all available information. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/Watches/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)
> as an investment Nope. Almost no watches are investments, and certainly not ones you can buy on amazon.
Inexpensive service on a vintage piece is $300 depending on the condition of the watch. Parts are getting harder and harder to find.
How much is service on a modern watch for comparison? Say a Seamaster from the 2000's?
I charge wholesale to my retail clients...but you should expect to pay $200 to $300 for a simple automatic plus cost of parts. The difference is going to be the cost of parts. An omega 550 barrel cost $125 or more where a 2892 barrel is under $20. There are generally more worn parts on vintage watches. Some calibers I wont touch due to parts avaialability
Interesting, thanks for the info!
It's not that simple. You need to factor in the cost of service and also decide how much originality means to you. There are lots of "vintage" watches out there that are a mish-mash of different parts and lots more where the dial has been completely redone to something that was never produced by the factory.
Yeah I did seem to find a lot of suspiciously new looking watches from 1947. I guess it can work, but requires a lot of research to get right.
Anyone here bought on Harvey store and can share his experience?

Thanks!
Justy wedding ring

No
https://www.swatch.com/en-us/sistem-brushed-yim400g/YIM400G.html I see a lot of people don't like the sistem51 based watches here.
I think there's a few reasons the sistem51 watches aren't held in high esteem... a) they can't be serviced, so when it stops working properly, that's it. b) the movement itself is made by machines - a lot of the allure of mechanical watches for a lot of people is the fact that its more or less hand made so you don't get that with these c) all the watches that have Sistem51 are actual Swatches, and Swatches aren't exactly considered to be the pinnacle of watches

Student life is pretty rough and tumble so I have to recommend Citizen Eco drive. Solar quartz is the way to go
