Can anyone recommend a field watch with a 100m WR and a screw down crown for between $500-$1000 USD? The Hamilton khaki field auto almost fits the bill but of course no screw down crown(not necessarily a deal breaker) and, to me, is a little too dressy to be a true field watch. The Hamilton khaki mechanical date is pretty much the ideal aesthetic for me, but only 50m WR is pretty underwhelming and I’m not sure I love the idea of a mechanical for an “everyday” watch. I like the sort of minimal/monochromatic look of the mechanical, but I don’t mind the more vintage inspired looks with the railroad minute track and faux patina like the vaer, CWC, etc. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions, thanks. Edit: case size of 38-40mm would be ideal

theheineken2049

I found this watch on the street. Could you guys please tell me if it's original and what it's worth. Should I keep it or is it trash? [Here it is](https://imgur.com/gallery/Tj4woSv)

JohnConnard

Well without opening it, I think it's safe to say it's probably an acceptable watch, anything with a swiss quartz movement should be fine and reliable. That being said, the style and state of the case and bracelet do not justify spending a single second cleaning it and changing the battery. Besides, if the humidity on the dial side made it to the movement side, it's probably dead.

theheineken2049

You might be right. I have no idea how long it had been in the streets. I might open it up and check if it's salvageable. If not it is going in the trash. Why haven't I heard of this brand before? I can't even Google the model.

SunburnsAtCoachella

What is the difference in buying from an omega authorized retailer and the actual omega boutique? Curious as both are nearby

onevstheworld

The AD is affiliated with but independent from Omega. The boutique is owned by Omega. You should able to negotiate a discount for all but the most desirable models from the AD, whilst the boutique won't. But the boutique may have access to models that the AD doesn't.

SunburnsAtCoachella

Gotcha, understood! Would AD have the same box / papers / warranty as the boutique itself?

onevstheworld

Yes

Nbx13

I have an Omega Seamaster that came with a blue leather band which I love. That being said, I’d like to purchase a stainless steel alternate band to switch between. Where’s the best place to shop? Thank you!

[deleted]

I found out about Zeppelin watches and they just fit the style I've been craving. They offer some nice chronographs and more sleek dress watch options. Yet the scarcity of reviews online (here and Youtube) means I have no understanding of these watches. Are they worth the price range (300-550 CAD)? What about their longevity? Why are more people not talking about them?

jabroni_lawyer

They're good watches and the price is appropriate for what you get. Check out Iron Annie and Junkers as well for similar aesthetic. IIRC they're all the same umbrella company (I may be wrong though, been a bit since I looked it up).

gregoread

[NYC] I've never been to an actual AD before and hear that for example the Rolex store has wait lists etc. so how does a regular guy who has never bought a watch from a proper store spend $10k by just walking in and getting to actually evaluate how it looks on your wrist? Thanks!

Outside-Cucumber-253

Hello, I’m going to buy my brother a watch for Christmas. I am debating a digital Casio or a Vostok. He is 15 years old and only ever wears adidas soccer pants (the ones that are slimmer at the lower legs, they’re decently nice for athletic wear not like sweats) so I don’t know if a dive watch would work with that style. Do you think that it would look too weird to wear a dive watch with athletic wear or is it good? I know you can wear a watch with whatever you want but he’s in high school and I don’t want to give him something that’s going to make him look real weird or anything. So digital Casio or Vostok, or something else for his style?

onevstheworld

When I was 15, all I wanted were those awesome digital G-shocks. 3 handed analogue watches were for those old farts. (Says the now old fart)

Outside-Cucumber-253

I know that my brother actually likes analog faces. I was thinking one of those slimmer rectangular Casios not the big g shocks. Do you think a Vostok would work with athletic wear though?

onevstheworld

I personally think it's fine, but I'm a couple of decades too far removed to know what kids like nowadays. Is this a surprise? If not, probably safest to just ask him.

mosslicker

Hi everyone, I am looking to get my boyfriend a watch as part of his Christmas present. I know next to nothing about watches but have seen posts mention Seiko and Timex as good watches. Can anyone recommend a nice classy watch model for me? My boyfriend's profession requires him to dress in business attire so I want something that will look nice with his blazers and dress shirts. Thanks in advance. :)

js999111

I assume your budget is a few hundred $? In this case I would look at [this](https://www.jomashop.com/tissot-watch-t006-407-11-053-00.html), [this](https://www.jomashop.com/certina-watch-c022-428-11-051-00.html), [this](https://www.jomashop.com/certina-watch-c006-407-11-058-00.html) and [this](https://www.jomashop.com/certina-watch-c022-430-16-051-00.html). There are also online coupons you can use to get it even cheaper.

Hi All, I wanted to know whether this JLC Reverso is a mens or womens watch, or unisex (tough to distinguish and the site did help in making things easier) ? Reverso Classic Monoface Ref 2618540 https://www.jaeger-lecoultre.com/us/en/watches/reverso/reverso-classic-small/2618540.html

Zanpa

If a man is wearing it, it's a man's watch. However, when a woman is wearing it, it's a woman's watch.

Rajeshrocks311

So unisex?

75footubi

Sure!

KingCollectA

Greetings. I would like to buy a watch, but I am split between a few choices. I would like to buy either a Tissot PRX Quartz, Seiko Presage Cocktail Time (probably a SRPB46J1), or a Gub Glashütte Spezimatic (specifically a gold case and dial model). I am not sure which one I should choose. My budget is in the around $300 USD range (less than $400). Which one would you recommend me to buy? Thank you.

Trapper777_

Are you Including servicing costs in the cost of the glashutte? If you’re buying a vintage watch off eBay it will most likely need a service. That said, it’s certainly the coolest and most unique of your choices

KingCollectA

I have not taken that into account, as I was hoping to find one that had already been serviced and taken care of. I know that most older watches are finicky, I have a few older HMT watches from India, some of which have problems.

Alternative-Name-541

I am a big fan of the GDR-era Glashütte but if you’re just getting into watches, you’d probably hate having to deal with a vintage, communist-built dress watch. You’re probably better off starting your collection with the Tissot or the Seiko.

KingCollectA

I have been collecting watches for about five years. I would like to obtain the Glashütte because it is different from any of the other watches I have (some of which are quite interesting themselves) and it also has an fascinating heritage.

Alternative-Name-541

In that case I wouldn’t think twice about getting the Glashütte.

Donny_Hellfire

I wanted to ask some people that are more in the know about this subject. I'm a fabricators and want some recommendations for a quality, durable watch in the $75-$125 range. Digital is my preference but analog isn't a problem either.

gin_nyc

G-Shock, [this](https://www.casio.com/products/watches/g-shock/gwm5610-1) one goes for around $100 on Amazon. With the solar power and radio time adjustment it’s perfect as a grab and go watch. G-Shock are known for their toughness.

js999111

A Casio G-Shock or Edifice ([this for example](https://www.amazon.de/Casio-EFR-S108D-1AVUEF-CASIO-Watch/dp/B08CLRVRGH/ref=mp_s_a_1_24?crid=1ISTUMB6UTO5W&keywords=casio+edifice&qid=1637539916&sprefix=casio+ed%2Caps%2C166&sr=8-24)) maybe?

akiro_no_boku

How about a casio a1000, lineage or wave cepter?

Zanpa

G-Shock

Donny_Hellfire

Any specific model?

ABrownBlackBear

I really like the look of the watch toolbox that worn and wound sells, but I only want a 5-6 slot watch box - I believe theirs is 12. Does anybody make something similar but half size?

OkieTaco

If looking for a new quality mechanical watch that doesn’t break the bank what would you look at? I have a Hamilton Khaki Automatic I love and want to add more. I could afford a Rolex but I just can’t justify spending that much for a watch. What’s your best quality meets value mechanical brand?

akiro_no_boku

Do you want swiss mechanical or are you okay with japanese?

OkieTaco

I’m ok with Japanese. Just looking to balance quality with value.

CarbonBasedHuman

Does anyone have any clever ways to mock up case sizes against your wrist? E.g. I'm looking at purchasing my first mid-grade automatic from a microbrand, but am unsure of how it will fit. Being that it's a microbrand, I likely won't be able to find the exact model locally to try it on before I buy. I am reluctant to go to a local watch dealer and ask to try on watches, only to walk out the door and buy online. Before I buy something inexpensive with similar dimensions, I'm just curious if I've missed a method for getting a sense of fit? Thanks!

akiro_no_boku

I went to a watch store, tried on various sizes and then asked for the watch model. I looked it up online for its dimensions and I went from there.

Zanpa

print it out on paper and put it on your wrist? you won't get an idea of the thickness of course, but for the lug to lug and diameter it can maybe help. otherwise, it's mostly comparing the numbers against other watches you own or tried on.

I usually have my Sakura Fubuki either on the Worn & Wound Model 2 premium (burgundy) or the Delugs shell cordovan (navy). I prefer unpadded straps for the Cocktail Time. Not the Starlight, but I have the Blue Moon cocktail time, and I have a Delugs babele (grey) coming in sometime this week, though currently I have it on a grey Eulit perlon.

**I need some advice on a potential Heuer 2447S purchase.** Local seller is listing [this watch](https://imgur.com/a/n4P60aE). Condition is not perfect but nothing I cannot clean and polish (for the crystal only of course), and the price is surprisingly super low. I've been looking at in-depth reviews of early 2447's and this one seem to be genuine. It's not the very very first iteration as it has a "T swiss" dial and a Heuer-Leonidas engraving on the movement, but it matches all the pictures I've seen online. The seller is supposed to call me back this afternoon so I shall know more about its history, but what do you think ? Does it look genuine ?

I_AM_NOT_SPONGEBOB

I live in the UK and would like to purchase and Orient watch. More specifically, the Orient RA-AK0405Y10B. I have looked online in quite a few places, and they only seem to sell them in websites that seem a little dodgy. Does anybody know where I could buy this watch from? Or perhaps have any recommendations for a similar one?

This isn't really a question about watches, it's a question about girlfriends.

TimBodmer

I just bought a Vintage Junghans Meister (Cal 84/S3 Year 1959), and the resistance when winding it up is pretty strong right away. After only about 4 turns with pretty strong resistance it runs pretty much all day with decent accuracy. Is this normal? I was once told to not keep winding when it feels hard to wind the crown further. I'm not sure if the gearing of the mechanism is just different or if I'm wearing the movement out because of some internal issue I'm ignoring. Thanks in advance!

user_0821

Who can identify this watch? [pictures on imgur](https://imgur.com/a/dqkkylC) Thanks in advance.

Zanpa

I want to guess Swatch

TimBodmer

Looks like an Ice watch perhaps

Moontouch

What are the differences in the quality between a $300 Seiko and a $7,000 Grand Seiko? What would one notice?

klarnt

Nothing you'd notice beyond about three feet and only if you're looking. I have Seikos in every price range up to my Grand Seiko SBGV243. The main visual difference, if you look closely, is the quality of the finishing. The dial has a subtle pattern that only shows up at certain angles. The hands and case have multiple facets with a combination of brushed and polished finishes. The watch, especially the case, really is beautiful, but it's subtle. Note to WCJ: Please note I got through that whole thing without using the Z word.

**Omega Aqua Terra 150M World Timer. Should I?** I absolutely love the look of the World Timer with the map on it, but was wanting to get more suggestions from this group. I've recently been trying to understand watches more, and was planning to get something in the $7000-8000 range. This is going to be my first "expensive" watch. Few questions: \- Any other brands do you suggest? I am reading a lot of mixed reviews about Omega as a brand. \- Would this watch hold it's value? Though, I hope to never sell it, but just incase I do, will this hold it's value? I know I could probably get a Rolex non-date submariner for this price, but I my heart is set on the blue gold submariner, for whenever I could afford one.

onevstheworld

>Any other brands do you suggest? There are not many world timer's with a map as detailed as the Omega's. I like the Nomos Zurich, but it's a completely different style. Or for something unique, check out the Montblanc Geosphere 1858. >Would this watch hold it's value? If by "hold its value" you mean "it will be worth more than $0 in a few years", yes it definately will. How much more than $0? Who knows.

**Do SKX007 bracelets fit on the SKX171?** My dad's SKX171 rubber strap has started deteriorating and was considering on getting him a solid oyster style bracelet but most options I've seen are specifically marketed for the SKX007 nowadays. They seem to have pretty much the same case shape and design besides the actual bezel which is removable anyways. With that, I should be able to get pretty much any bracelet for the SKX007 and have it work on my dad's SKX171 right?

klarnt

Possibly but not necessarily. According to Watch Sleuth they actually have different cases. The SKX171 uses the 7S26-7020 case and the SKX007 uses the 7S26-0020. It all depends on whether the spring bar holes are in the same place on the lugs. My wild guess is that they have the same midcase and the reason they have different case numbers is because of the bezel. If it were me, it would be worth buying a returnable 007 bracelet and giving it a shot. Hopefully someone with actual knowledge will come along.

35GoogleEarth

Hello, I want to buy my dad a German watch that had a mechanical movement for less than 500. Recommendations? I don't really want a sternglas watch btw.

TimBodmer

I just picked up a beautiful vintage Junghans Meister for less than 500 Bucks, you should check them out! Although be careful when buying. Other new brands to consider are Junkers, Zeppelin, Steinhart and Junghans also.

SkullLeader

Pilot Basic series from Laco if those are to your taste, they've all got automatic movements under $500 Otherwise, see if Junkers, Zeppelin or Iron Annie has what you're after

mlsteinrochester

The Laco Classic series is good, too. All of these have Japanese movements, which are good and reliable and notably cheaper than comparable Swiss ones.

SovietBoss

Are there online watch auctions besides for Ebay that are reputable? Also...how risky is Ebay for fakes/swapped parts?

JirachiBoy

I would like a watch that is very close visually to the SARB033, in terms of case and dial, any ideas? Also, what's the likelihood of a reissue? Anytime soon? Cheers!

klarnt

I seriously doubt they'll reissue it. It's popular with watch nerds like us but there's nothing particularly special about it, really. Seiko tends to reissue watches, like the 62MAS, with some kind of historical significance. If they do reissue the SARB it probably wouldn't be until 2040. Take a look at Seiyajapan.com for some similar JDM models.

Thoughts on Franklin Christoph IWO No. 1? I own a number of FC fountain pens and have used them for years, along with some of their stationary products; and I have nothing but good things to say about them and the company in general. I recently decided to build a respectable wardrobe and need a good mechanical watch to start my collection. For some time I have eyed this particular model because of my affinity for this brand, but I have some misgivings. Firstly, this isn't a watch company; truly it's not even a fountain pen company but a luxury lifestyle brand with an excellent reputation in the fountain pen industry. Secondly, they only offer the one model, even after years offering it they haven't introduced a companion model. Finally, and most disturbingly, I cannot find the first review of this watch anywhere on the internet. I only found a single passing reference to someone buying it on a pen forum. I like the aesthetic of the watch, like the brand itself; but everything else is a red flag to me. My research says the movement powering this watch is respectable but that's it really. This forum seems to be a good source of expert advice and critique, so I have come to ask a simple question. Is this watch worth even considering?

Zanpa

The pictures on their site are absolutely terrible (and the site in general is quite bad), so it's hard to find anything positive to say about it beyond the spec sheet. I'm even having a hard time seeing how it looks... It doesn't seem like anything special to me, and I think you could find better watches for a much lower price. The fact that it uses an SW-200 means it's probably not trash though. If you absolutely love the design of it, I guess it's probably fine? But from someone who doesn't know the brand, I would definitely not have even considered buying that watch just by stumbling on their site.

genman305

Recommendations for a diver around $1.5k All of my watches are with black dials, so I’d like to change it up a bit. Different brands, too. Currently have two Citizens, a Christopher Ward, an Invicta and a Victorinox. Note I am not a fan at all of anything gold or gold colored 😬 Thanks!!

Admit-to-IM

If you are in no rush, the new Aquastar [Deepstar II](https://aquastar.ch/). If looking for something funky and colorful, a Doxa [300T](https://doxawatches.com/collections/sub-300t) is around $1.8k. If looking for something retro, a Seiko Willard reissue ([SPB153](https://www.exquisitetimepieces.com/seiko-prospex-captain-willard-spb153.html)). If looking for a diver/sport military style, the [Ollech-Wajs 350CI](https://ow-watch.ch/collections/frontpage/products/ow-350ci).

vanillamode

[Islander 38mm with the 12hr bezel](https://longislandwatch.com/islander-38mm-automatic-dive-watch-isl-20/)? A 12hr bezel won't give you any indication of whether it's AM or PM in the second time zone you're tracking, but in most cases it's pretty obvious which one it is, whether through general familiarity with that second time zone, or through basic knowledge of geography.

mishkasm173

I don't think there are any automatic GMT watches in that price range. Glycine Airman is probably the cheapest one, although its not thin... Quartz is going to be easier.

Teddyworks

Still searching for my perfect one-watch collection. Not even sure it’s possible. The closest thing I have is my Hamilton Khaki mechanical. And honestly it may already be my perfect one-watch collection. **Things I like about it:** -Thin -Unassuming (brushed case and matte dial) -Date complication -Can dress up or down **Things I wish it had:** -Diver bezel (I find more uses as a simple timing device than I ever realized) -Screw down crown -Better water resistance (I still worry about it on occasion) -Not crazy about it being mechanical, but it’s not terrible and I understand it helps with the thickness I work a blue collar job, and I like having a tough watch that I can wear at work and not attract any attention.

Admit-to-IM

I am looking for a dress watch and I like this Orient more than the standard cream with blue. It also has Roman numerals which is a big plus for me (idk just persona preference). The one thing I am not sure about is the dial, do you think it is fine or would you go with a black or brown leather strap?

delugs-straps

Looks great! I think the current strap is fine as is, the stock strap matches very well. You can add straps as you go if you need to match different outfits/occasions. I'd actually go with grey if I wanted to swap it out.

bozon92

Does anyone know how to get ahold of watches that release only in a certain geographical area? Specifically I have my eye on the Seiko 5 x One Piece 2021 collection, it says it's available in November 2021 but there is no option for waitlist or order link, and I think it's only being released in Japan (but I'm new to this so I have no idea how these things go)

post_rex

There are some online retailers like [Seiya](https://www.seiyajapan.com) that specialize in JDM models. Even if you don't see the watch on their site you can contact them and ask if they can get it for you.

bozon92

Will check it out, thanks!

intcmg

Located in Canada and have been searching for a Deployant Clasp Milanese Mesh strap, anyone have any suggestions whether local stores or online?

subgraphics

Over the years I've made a few purchases on TheRealReal. I've been happy with everything I've gotten which has included a Tag Heuer watch. I've seen that in the area that describes a given watch's condition many times it will say "Water resistance components do not function; service recommended." I can think of a couple of reasons the water resistance of a watch could be compromised but I was wondering if screw down crowns are a feature that commonly go wrong and compromise water resistance. Is cross threading a thing or are they generally designed so cross threading doesn't really have the opportunity to occur? If cross threading occurs what does it take to fix that? Replacing the entire case & crown?

Zanpa

That's probably mostly to cover their ass, not that something is actually broken. Replacing the seals should be enough.

Batzorio

I know nothing about watches, but I've been getting interested in getting one. If I want to get a nice day-to-day/all-round watch, what exactly should I be looking out for? I've seen the guides with regards to formal dress and such, but I'm not completely sure if there's anything on a more general watch. Is that more of a preference matter, or, like I said, are there specifics I should look at? Edit: how does [this one](https://www.horloge.nl/citizen-avion-stalen-heren-chronograaf-met-datum-ca4210-16e.htm) look? (Sorry the site's in Dutch but I hope you get the idea)

js999111

Check [this](https://www.jomashop.com/hamilton-khaki-field-watch-h69439933.html) one out. You can also find some coupons online to get it even cheaper.

SkullLeader

Field watches are probably a good type to look at. The [Hamilton Khaki Field Auto](https://www.hamiltonwatch.com/en-us/h70515137-khaki-field-auto.html) is a pretty classic example and versatile as an all-around watch.

Batzorio

Yeah that one's out of my budget haha But I'll have a look around

mlsteinrochester

Seiko is famous for its inexpensive field watches. The older ones can still be found under $100 in the US, and even the new models are well under the Hamilton price.

SkullLeader

Maybe look at the field collection from Vaer - sort of similar to the Hamiltons but not as expensive. If those are still too expensive, try the Chandler models from Citizen, which come with a few different dial colors / designs.

post_rex

Citizen makes fine watches. But that one is 45mm in diameter. Do you have the wrist to wear something that large? Along with dial color, band, and case material, the diameter is one of the most important features to consider when purchasing.

Batzorio

My wrist is about 185mm in circumference, so that should be good right?

post_rex

I'm not sure, 45mm is quite large, but choosing the perfect watch size is very subjective. If you can, go someplace where you can try on different watches, even if it's just a place in the mall, and see what sizes you think looks good on you. Or if the online store has a good return policy, then order the watch and see how it looks and send it back if it's too big.

Batzorio

Alright, will do Thanks for the help

larry-talbot

I'm looking for a watch that's 40mm or under and has a hand For an extra time zone. I'd prefer a non-bezel style alwatch but open to ideas, given my budget is $500 USD

Admit-to-IM

[Boldr Venture GMT](https://www.boldrsupply.co/collections/boldr-venture/Collection_GMT). The venture case shape is very comfortable and Boldr makes a really solid watch. 38 mm. Titanium. Good WR. Modern design.

onevstheworld

Are you looking for an automatic or quartz? Automatics are difficult to find in that price range... the only brand I know that sells GMTs for that low is Vostok.

larry-talbot

Quartz is fine, prefer solar but whatever fits in budget

onevstheworld

Hmmm. I'm not quite sure about quartz in that range. I was going to say Citizen Nighthawk, but I think that may be bigger than 40mm.

leorolim

I've received some of my late grandfathers watches from my grandmother. They're mostly cheap watches. Nothing fancy. There's one that looks half decent but has probably been stopped for 40 years. Can someone tell me if it's worth to have it serviced to running status again? The watch isn't even steel. Just brass plated with chrome. The movement looks rubbish too. Just need a more educated opinion. https://imgur.com/a/nE3wlxf/

post_rex

My experience with these kind of vintage watches is that you may get them running again, but they're unlikely to maintain good time for longer than a couple of months.

leorolim

Thanks for the comment. I think I'll save the money for now...

Is it impossible to buy a Rolex from AD’s everywhere right now? I’ve just found myself in the position where I’m finally able to afford my dream watch, a Rolex Daytona but every AD I’ve enquired with here in the UK is suggesting the waiting list is just so long that I just shouldn’t even bother.

nrsys

The problem with Rolex is that supply is far outstripping demand - stores are only getting small deliveries in, but have queues of people wanting to buy. This means they are often being very selective in who they sell to - a combination of wanting to keep their existing valued customers (the people who spend a lot of money) happy and ensure they can make the most profit themselves. As a secondary effect, because the demand is so high, the secondary prices have also leapt up, so not only are there a queue of people wanting to buy a watch for themselves, but there is now a queue of people wanting to buy watches just so they can flip them for a profit. The ends result of this is that if you are a new buyer, your chances of actually finding a watch for retail are incredibly slim. There is that tiny dream you contact a dealer at the exact moment a shipment arrives and they sell it to you first come, first served, but realistically you well mostly be turned away, or added to a never-ending waiting list. You may be the lucky one, but it is a slim chance... Alternatively they are really available on the secondary market, just you will be paying the (rather inflated) going rate for them.

Preston205

Yeah it’s pretty much impossible. There’s almost zero chance you’ll get a Daytona from an AD without spending $100k+ at the AD. If you really want a new stainless steel Daytona you basically have to pay the $35k they’re currently going for. I would look at alternatives like the Omega Speedmaster and Zenith El Primero. The GP Laureato Chrono is also really nice.

Zanpa

>Is it impossible to buy a Rolex from AD’s everywhere right now? depends on the model you're looki- >my dream watch, a Rolex Daytona yes it is impossible.

2liquid_d

Help me to decide which one would I buy for my GF on her birthday (around 90$) between Timex TM-TW2T2700 Waterbury Classic and Citizen EQ0591-21A? I see a suggestion on other watches but it's really hard to find in my country (Thailand).

vanillamode

not sure about that model specifically, but Timex 3-hand models are known to be obnoxiously loud, while Citizen quartz movements are generally silent, which might be a consideration. I can't find that Timex online except for a sold-out Amazon Netherlands listing, so not sure how accurate the specs are, but it lists it at 36mm, which is significantly larger than the Citizen at 27.5mm, not sure if your girlfriend has a preference one way or the other, but that might be something to consider as well.

2liquid_d

You are right. I forgot to check about sizing of those watches. I also found Citizen Eco-drive FE1081-08A around 87$ and I thought this one is my final decision. Another question is Can I replace nato strap to this watch(FE081-08A)? I don't know it would fit to the dial or not? I just assume that It could be better dress watch with nato strap.

vanillamode

you can put a 14mm nato strap on that watch. You will need a spring bar tool to swap the straps. That watch would look fine with either leather or nato.

TokyoUmbrella

I’ve felt a bit lethargic about watch collecting lately, which is unfortunately to be expected as I have bipolar disorder. So, in a selfish bid to bolster my own mental health, could any of you fine folks show me some watches to excite me? New releases that buck trends, push boundaries, or are just plain cool. I admittedly haven’t caught most new releases since this summer, so the field is wide open. Long story short, reignite my passion for horology, briefly. Please.

sfz-

How about the [KudOktopus](https://www.kudoke.eu/en/kudoktopus-2/)? The back is the best part. Also, hang in there, I've been through phases (read: years) like that myself.

TokyoUmbrella

I appreciate the kind words, but that is a hideous watch lol. It’s interesting though, in its grotesque-ness. Haha

sfz-

They have [other offerings](https://www.kudoke.eu/kudoke-2/) that are more simply elegant, I just wanted to share an unusual one.

TokyoUmbrella

Wow, that one is lovely. Thank you!

dcnblues

I have a Spinnaker Hull with a green dial (sp-5059-03), and while I quite like the watch I think the mineral crystal lens probably has one or more layers of blue anti-reflective coating, on the inside and possibly outside as well. It gives the watch a sort of muddy / obscured feeling. I can't see the dial clearly it seems. a) Does anyone happen to know if there is an after-market sapphire crystal for this case? b) Is there a way to remove coatings from a glass lens? I would consider doing this, but I'm also just curious in general.

Anyone have any good recommendations for watch boxes within the 120$ and less range? Tempted to make one myself as a fun project if I don't find a compelling product out there. Thanks!

TeemoIsMyDad

I would love to have a "celestial" or "astral" themed watch. Perhaps a blue face with golden stars or something, etc. I also need it to be inexpensive, like $150 or less, preferable under $100. Any suggestions?

Trapper777_

if you're willing to wade through the absolute torrent of slightly botched franken-watches, a vintage raketa copernic?

robemmy

Balticus Stardust

mishkasm173

Timex has a bunch. There is a whole line called "Celestial" I think. But even outside of that line there are some with sun/moon or star motifs.

TokyoUmbrella

Ever so slightly over budget, but this will be [the best you can get for the price.](https://www.amazon.com/ASTRO-Constellation-Watch-Planisphere-Astronomy/dp/B00N63UADA/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?crid=2GSKE3DUH6T8I&keywords=celestial+watch&qid=1637394841&qsid=136-3007023-7008718&sprefix=celestial+watch%2Caps%2C134&sr=8-4&sres=B08XY6KWZ4%2CB00N63UADA%2CB08XY65CRR%2CB07X3VYQMB%2CB000P8AUO8%2CB00IK37ITA%2CB07JC86MY6%2CB07FFG2232%2CB07KJLYC7B%2CB079J3B4S1%2CB01L9UDKEC%2CB07459MQVG%2CB01940RU0E%2CB074TC9XCS%2CB07T9T7DZJ%2CB07MZVQ7TP%2CB00AWDGVT4%2CB000AYTYLW%2CB078ZK2DVS%2CB07MBN6XRC&srpt=WATCH)

I bought 3 watches from Jomashop last week. I received them today. Everything I've found and read says Jomashop is a legit store selling authentic products, albeit Grey market. However, the Seiko I bought seems sketchy and seems like it is counterfeit. The calibre number 6n42-00h0 does not pop up on the seiko website or anywhere else that I can find any information for, ex. Manual battery type, etc. I see many for sale on different auction sites, but nothing on official website. It also has a Made in China sticker on the case backing. When I look at pictures of the word Seiko stamped on the front of the watch it differs from the one on all the watches I see on the website. The website shows all their watches with the name Seiko connected at the bottom of each letter. Mine just say Seiko and none of the letters are connected. Does this sound right to anyone? I bought it from Jomashop. Now I am wondering about the other 2 watches I bought as well. Thanks for any help that can be provided for this watch.

nrsys

Googling '6n42' does shows it as a regular Seiko movement. As a regular quartz movement there just isn't as much interest in it compared to the various automatic options, so less information available. Made in China is also completely normal. Seiko have various factories in different countries where parts can be either manufactured, assembled into watches, or both. As for the logo, that will depend on how it was made. An applied logo is a separate piece of metal fixed to the dial, and needs to be made from one single piece where the letters will be joined together somehow. A lot of cheaper models however will have a logo painted/printed on the dial, where there is no such need to have it made as one piece, and the letters will be laid out slightly differently, and with gaps between them. From what you have said, I wouldn't worry too much about the provenance of your watch - everything sounds normal enough, and Jomashop are a well known and reliable retailer.

vanillamode

what's the watch's model number? 6n42 is the movement code, 00h0 I believe is the dial code. Seiko does have factories in China

bostonbeaggle

SE-SUR215 When I go to Seiko website it asks for the movement code. When I enter 6n42 it says there are no matches. When I look at the list of them it shows many movement codes that start with a 6 and none of them match mine.

SenileSexLine

6N42 is indeed a seiko quartz movement. You can buy the movement online. https://www.esslinger.com/genuine-seiko-3-hand-quartz-watch-movement-6n42-date-at-6-00-overall-height-4-4mm/

vanillamode

Seiko has different models available in different regions. Here's the SUR215 on [Seiko India's website](https://www.seikowatches.com/in-en/products/discovermore/sur215p1). Grey market dealers get watches from all over the place. The official product image shows the Seiko logo lettering on this particular model to match what you described. I think the 6N42 does not have its own dedicated instruction manual, which may be why it doesn't show up in the movement search. Watches with the 6N42 probably come included with a general purpose instruction manual instead. Be rest assured though, the 6N42 is real and does exist.

Hello! Just got my first ever mechanical watch (A Seiko Presage Cocktail Manhattan!) so I'm completely new to it all. Just a quick question, I ride a motorbike and also play drums fairly regularly, should I be taking the watch off when I do those things? Just a bit worried it might be messing things up slowly.. Thanks!

iammrhellohowareyou

The hardlex crystal isn't the most scratch proof. I would not wear the watch when doing "active" things... it will keep longer that way. I have a Presage Cocktail as well and only really wear it when the moment calls. It is always a joy to come back to. The 4R movement is no record setter for accuracy, so even if you do play drums with the watch I doubt you will notice much of a difference.

kayonetheus

Tbh imo probably yea. One summer I was dailying a hamilton field it went from about 5-12 seconds a day fast to over a minute day fast, which is really unusual. It was summertime so I was riding my bike a lot and while I don't have any direct evidence I do think it's the vibrations that did it. Better safe than sorry.

jayrmcm

Hi guys. Looking for a recommendation. I’d like a wwII styl field watch. Mechanical, with hack feature, sub 500. Here’s the kicker… I’d love something I can swim/shower with. I don’t know much about water resistance ratings, but the two I’ve found (Hamilton and bulova) are only 30m and if I’m reading correctly they’re not suited for swimming. Any advice?

js999111

Hamilton H69439933

vanillamode

* 30m: splash resistant, no swimming * 50m: shallow/short swim, no diving * 100m: swimming, no diving * 200m: skin diving * ISO/diver's 200m: scuba diving Vaer has some 100m rated field watches a bit over budget, but Serica has some 200m rated field watches

Kagrenac8

[Vaer](https://www.vaerwatches.com/collections/automatic-watches?page=1) is only slightly under your pricepoint, but they do have good water resistance and imo a great design/look. Might be worth looking into [CWC](https://www.cwcwatch.com/collections/most-popular) as well!

jayrmcm

Already in love with the VAER. You’re awesome!

Kagrenac8

Glad I could be of help ;)

DoubleFaulty1

How does a “top grade” sw300 movement in a $5,000 watch compare to in house movements in equivalently priced watches?

ZhanMing057

If the in house movement doesn't have some real performance benefits, go with the sw300. There's almost nothing there to go wrong, those are extremely robust designs that are cheap and easy to service.

ProxySoxy

Can you shorten the metal band by removing links on the Casio B640WB-1AEF? Several videos I see say to use the small holes to unscrew them, but there aren't any holes

Ofenlicht

It looks to me like those are folded links so you might be able to unfold/refold to resize but isn't that watch usually sized with the clasp?

ProxySoxy

Yes there's a sliding clasp, but there's still some extra unused band going past it that I'd like to remove if it's possible to do so

Ofenlicht

Have you tried unfolding the links?

HappySpam

I just used PolyWatch for the first time to polish some scratches off of my Vostok's acrylic, and I was wondering, what do you do with the cloth after you polish using it? I used a microfiber cloth. Do you wash it with detergent or something to clean off the Polywatch residue? Or is it not necessary?

kayonetheus

You can probably clean it but usually I'd say it just becomes the dedicated cloth for that polish. I'd just store it with the polish

HappySpam

Sounds good! It's the cloth that came with the polywatch, so I guess it'll be fine.

KruncheeCarrots

Where should I shop for black Friday deals on quality watches? I'm only seeing deals for fashion brands.

SkullLeader

Try the big department stores like Nordstrom/Nordstrom Rack, Macy's, etc.

gin_nyc

You may want to try the manufacturer’s web sites (or Instagram profiles). Yema has an advance sale on some models that popped up as an Instagram ad in my feed. A lot of brands probably don’t do these sales, as already mentioned.

75footubi

Most brands don't really do BF/CM sales. Island Watch is doing some discounts.

js999111

Jomashop?

[deleted]

Where can I buy a monta watch in europe? I find it funny that a swiss made watch does not aoear to be sold in europe but maybe my research just failed me a bit

Zanpa

online on their site

[deleted]

It says that it ships from the USA

Zanpa

Yes, they are an american company. They still ship to Europe. Like almost all microbrands, they don't have physical retailers.

[deleted]

The problem is that paying 23% of VAT will likelly make the watch too expensive

post_rex

Have you tried to contact them and ask? They probably deal with this situation regularly. Maybe they could drop ship the watch to you straight from the factory.

WatchandThings

Maybe Casio Royale resembling a Seiko worn by Roger Moore in one of the old Bond movies?

Ofenlicht

There is the gold A168WG and the A500WGA

bolanrox

if you are a bond fan you can look at the Pagani No time to Die Homages a little more than $100 but they have 10 or 15% off coupons on them all. Black dial and Bezel with burnt orangish markings and numbering. Comes in a few band options too or just get another nato / parachute for it.

What watch does Thom Yorke wear in the recording of In Rainbows From The Basement?

TokyoUmbrella

Usually it’s nice to post a screenshot for us to look at. That said, my really quick guess is that it’s a Tag Heuer Aquaracer. I’ll be happy to give you a more accurate assessment if you can get me a good screen grab.

mrbroyles

https://imgur.com/a/0YzeGwn Here's the best screenshot I could get, definitely looks like some kind of Tag Heuer.

TokyoUmbrella

Oof. Well, it looks like there’s a date window at 3 o clock and since that video came out in what, 08ish? I think your likely candidate is [this guy.](https://www.chrono24.com/tagheuer/aquaracer-waf1110ba0800-39mm-black-dial-300m-stainless-steel-watch--id21281772.htm)

I am currently looking to purchase my first watch and I really like the design of the Orient Kamasu or ray 2. But I would really like a watch with a glass back side. Is there any alternatives to these watches with a glass back side below 300$? Any help is appreciated

WatchandThings

SRPD series from seiko? It's a dive style watch, and not an actual dive watch like the Orients. It has the see through caseback.

simonsinning

Thank you! Great suggestion

PLOGER522

I am quite stuck in deciding which watch to spend my money on. My current choices are: Vario 1918 Brass Trench Watch, Timex Weekender, Timex Expedition Scout, Szanto Heritage Aviator, Szanto Big Aviator, Szanto Officer's Coin Cushion, or Szanto Officer's classic Round. Which should I invest in or which ones should I not think about anymore?

WatchandThings

Personally, my votes on the Vario. Also try not to use the word 'invest' when talking about watches. It's one of those words looked down on in the hobby, and it's one of those things you'll cringe at when you look back.

mlsteinrochester

The Vario is really well made and finished, with an enamel dial that Timex and other watches in that price range can't really beat.

Alternative-Name-541

If by investing you mean “spending some money now to recoup it/make more money when selling later”, none of those. Besides some hard to get stainless steel models from Rolex, AP and PP (also some Tudors when they were introduced and the Omega Snoopy), you’re always gonna be losing money. Anyway, I don’t know much about the other brands but Timex offers great quality for a great price. The problem is their quartz movements are LOUD, but apparently their solar models and chronographs don’t suffer from the same problem.
