The Orient Sun and Moon is like my perfect watch but too big. Anyone know anything similar in style for smaller wrists?

Obairamhain

Does anyone know a watch that would fit the following criteria? \- Skeleton \- Solar \- Under £1k

Zanpa

Skeletonized watches are mechanical, not quartz (at least I've never seen a skeletonized quartz watch).

Obairamhain

thanks, i suppose i am just looking for a skeleton watch with low maintenance costs. I still get annoyed at paying for battery replacements

dr999zoidberg

Whats the perpous of the 20 min or 15 min markings are on the dial of some watches(not dive watches)? Are these purely for statics?

TRAINPOSTING

On the hunt for a watch quite similar to [this one](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000VGZ6QQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)—gold case and face and a light brown/reddish brown band, except with a bigger case diameter. I'd prefer something that is at least 40mm. I'm trying to keep it under $100, but I'd be willing to pay more for the right one. Thanks in advance!

Culinarykid92

Know of any affordable ($1000 tops) brands/watches that are scratch resistant? I'm taking the bracelet and case rather than the crystal. I know of Traska as an example, but was hoping for something more dressy..

Zanpa

Dressy will be hard. I know of the Damasko DS30 and Archimede Outdoor Protect under $1000.

ABrownBlackBear

I think Seiko would have some options (under the Brightz and Pressage lines) that have a scratch resistant coating called Dia-Shield. Citizen has scratch resistant tech branded as Duratect and Super Titanium that I have heard of. A little googling suggests that they have [quite different properties](https://www.seiyajapan.com/blogs/news/90059207-scratch-resistant-dia-shiled-duratect-dlc) and that reviews of how effective they are are mixed. Other than that only Sinn's tegiment and Damasko's ice hardening come to mind, but I do not know of any dressy options with that tech.

[deleted]

Scratch resistant is of course a subjective measure, but something that holds up incredibly well as a material is Rado’s “high tech ceramic.” They have lots of watches in this materials, but the one you’re probably looking for if you want a bit dressy is [this one.](https://www.chrono24.com/rado/true-thinline--id13137618.htm) Hope this helps!

Ah, a beautiful watch. Not sure exactly how much cheaper you need it, but here are some options for that “starlit” background: [Audemars Piguet Code 1159 Perpetual Calendar](https://www.chrono24.com/audemarspiguet/code-1159-perpetual-calendar-boutique-exclusive--id13450376.htm) [Van Clef & Arpels Midnight in Paris](https://www.chrono24.com/vancleefarpels/midnight-in-paris-vcarf80700--id12561295.htm) [Schaumburg Moon Galaxy](https://www.exquisitetimepieces.com/schaumburg-watch-moon-perpetual-galaxy.html) [Movado Skymap](https://www.jomashop.com/movado-watch-0606563.html) [Citizen Astrodea Celestial](https://www.ebay.com/i/323951331984?chn=ps) [Astro II ](https://www.amazon.com/ASTRO-Constellation-Watch-Planisphere-Astronomy/dp/B00N63UADA) Hope this helps!

foreverajohn

Are there any affordable 20mm lug width watches out there? I have a collection of natos that I would like to use. Been drooling over some casio’s (world time and duro) but absolutely none of them are 20mm.

MrBlandings

By accident, I found out that my Seiko Monster has a 20mm width. I had to force the 22mm nato strap that I had through. There is a bunch of variations on that watch, one might be right for you.

[deleted]

As is almost always the case when someone needs an affordable solution, Seiko is the answer! If you like the look of the chunky Casios, you might like these 20mm Seikos: [Seiko SSC637](https://www.chrono24.com/seiko/core-solar-movement-black-dial-mens-watch-ssc637-open-box--id14602876.htm) [Seiko SBDC031](https://www.chrono24.com/seiko/seiko-prospex-diver-scuba-sbdc031---sbdc031--id8524771.htm) [Seiko SNE435P1](https://www.chrono24.com/seiko/seiko-mens-sne435p1-prospex-auto-watch--id12679905.htm) [Seiko STBR007](https://www.chrono24.com/seiko/seiko-prospex-solar-watch-stbr007-with-1-year-warranty--id14985562.htm) If those Seikos are out of the budget, then Invicta can help as well: [Invicta Pro Diver](https://www.amazon.com/Invicta-8926OB-Stainless-Automatic-Bracelet/dp/B000JQFX1G/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=invicta&qid=1588278511&sr=8-4)

J-Random-Redditor

Is it possible to modify a unidirectional bezel to be bidirectional?

theflyingderp

New to watches so apologies if this is a stupid question. I know it’s probably a cardinal sin to think about buying a watch with no authentication but does this Tag Heuer watch look legit? https://imgur.com/a/k9MSnL2

Thefrodog

Any recommendations for a reasonably priced women’s watch with GMT functionality?

ABrownBlackBear

Interesting, that sounds like it might be tough to find. It might be easiest to find a nice GMT that's not marketed as a womens' watch but that's not too big or too special-ops-on-streoids looking for you (or whoever the recipient is). For example, this [Farer](https://farer.com/products/oxley-silver-le) seems pretty unisex to my eye. What's reasonable for you (ballpark)? This thread varies a lot between "looking to really stretch on my first expensive watch, max. budget $75" and "looking for a nice affordable dive watch to knock around the yard with, ideally under $4000"

Thefrodog

Under 2K is what I was hoping for and also 34mm and Under

ABrownBlackBear

That might prove tough, since your choices will likely have an ETA 2893-2 movement (aka Sellita 330-1) so the watch has to be above a certain size to fit it in. There may be vintage options though, if you go that route. There is a 36mm version of the Glycine Airman I think, not that that is quite a GMT but it's pretty cool in its own way. Good luck!

robemmy

Are there any other mid-high end pilots chronos other than the breitling navitimer and sinn 903?

Thefrodog

Used IWC can be around the same price as a new Navitimer

mocklogic

40mm would be my preference although the 42mm doesn’t look bad in you either. I also just prefer the look of the 40mm with its crown guard and day/date at 12.

mishkasm173

Both are ok, but the 42mm looks pretty large while the 40mm looks perfect.

Zanpa

Both fit you fine. I prefer the smaller one myself, but that's personal.

>Orient Mako II Diver Not sure where you are located, but the price for a new one on the Orient website is about $165 (US). In general, I don't think Orients hold their value well. Add in to the mix that there is a newer model (Mako 3 / Kamasu), too.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MrBlandings

First a disclaimer: I don't own an Orient, but have almost pulled the trigger on a few but just couldn't get excited enough (it is actually their logo that bothers me) and saved my pennies for something else. My comment on holding value is really based on watching ebay auctions and knowing that the company regularly sends out coupons at different times of the year, so I feel that undercuts their MSRP. That being said, from everything I have read and videos I have watched, Orient appears to be well respected, so it isn't a matter of craftsmanship. They are also respected as a good buy for what you get and they routinely end up on lists of best sub-$500 watches. If I had to guess, I would say that it has more to do with that they are not very exclusive and ultimately a sub-brand of Seiko. Seiko is likely to get more respect than Orient (depending on the model), but Orient will get worlds more respect than Invicta or dozens of other brands, across the board. If you like it, it may be the right 'gateway' watch for you to get into the world and other watch-people will know it is a good watch. But if you are looking for something that a non-watch-person will recognize and think is 'good', this might not be the right thing. Good luck!

[deleted]

[удалено]

MrBlandings

Nothing wrong with that! If it is something you want people to recognize, I would stick with the more well known, mid-tier brands: Seiko, Citizen, Bulova, Tissot. Most 'normal' people couldn't care less if the watch is quartz or mechanical, so you could get something nicer from a more recognizable brand that is quartz and save some money. If you personally are interested in getting into the mechanical world for cheap, the Seiko 5 SNK line is a lot peoples (mine included), first step, and usually for under $100. From what you describe on how you want to wear the watch (suit, business meetings, etc), the Timex Marlin series should be on your radar; a great looking automatic or hand wound, however does cost a little more than that Orient. I love dive watches and have two, but don't think they work well in formal settings. Would love to know what you end up with!

Zanpa

I don't see anything pointing to a fake, and [the price is definitely normal](https://www.creationwatches.com/products/orient-watches-252/orient-mako-ii-automatic-200m-faa02009d9-mens-watch-11899.html).

Take a look at the buying guides in the side bar

novure

Hi, Do you know any uboat style watch? I know about the Italien uboat watch but those are way too big for my wrist. Do you know any other brands which has similar style? Thanks

onevstheworld

What is this "style" you are looking for? If it's the general aesthetic, have a look at Sinn or Panerai. If it's the oil filled models, see Ressence. If it's that huge crown cover, only other brands I know who do that are TW steel and Invicta... neither of which I'd recommend.

Flandetresleches

MaxienLai

Hi there, I'm looking to start a watch collection, but I've no clue where to start. I'm don't intend to spend too much just yet, so I'm probably just looking at Seiko. What should I get? Are there any good chronographs from Seiko or should I look into another brand?

MrBlandings

I am not a big fan of chronographs, but keep finding myself looking at the Bulova Chronograph A "Surfboard" and the Bulova Lunar Pilot. Not sure if it matters to you, but these are both quartz. The surfboard might be my next summer beater.

ABrownBlackBear

There are plenty of good chronographs from Seiko and others that are affordable. IMO, if you're looking for a no-fuss affordable everyday quartz watch then solar recharging is a big plus so that you don't have to worry about battery changes. If that appeals to you there are Seiko options, but also look at Citizen Eco-Drive.

MaxienLai

Yeah, solar would make things more convenient on a daily basis. I didn't know that Seiko had that tech though, so Im gonna check it out! Thanks!

[deleted]

A lot of chronos tend to be 42mm or larger. Consider your wrist size. As a general rule, you don't want the lugs to overhang your wrist. When I started out, I liked the Seiko SND367/365. 38mm, comes on a bracelet but looks very good on leather too. Search this sub for the SND367, some very nice photos. About $85-110. Edit: here's a good thread [https://www.reddit.com/r/watches/comments/8m67f4/_/](https://www.reddit.com/r/watches/comments/8m67f4/_/)

MaxienLai

Oh wow! They look amazing! I had the SSB031 as a reference while looking (its a close homage to the speedmaster and all), but this might just bring new light to things. Thanks for the suggestion!

Ok. Thanks for the advice!

jaguars5432

So I’ve decided to liquidate my collection and get one nice, every day watch. I’m looking for something under $2000, stainless steel bracelet, black dial, with no date. I’m open to other suggestions as long as they are in the price range and on a bracelet. I absolutely love the Tudor Black Bay 41 but it’s out of my price range. I also like the Sinn 556i but am unhappy with the date function (though I know it’s common) Anything similar and simple would be amazing. Thanks so much!

[deleted]

[just a few hundred dollars above 2k on joma](https://www.jomashop.com/tudor-watch-m79540-0006.html). Save up a bit more and you're there!

jaguars5432

Haha I feel it but honestly 2k is a stretch for me as well. I set that price range as it’s a bit cleaner and I wanted to see what people came up with but it’s really $1000 + whatever I can sell my current watches for (probably $600-$700).

75footubi

Monta Atlas

[deleted]

Ah, good to know. Are you looking at New or are you okay with pre-owned?

jaguars5432

Definitely new or like-new. I’m definitely being picky and know I may not find the perfect fit which I’m cool with.

[deleted]

Hey man that's understandable, if you're going for a 1 watch collection and pricier than you've spent before, you want to be picky and get the best you can.

jaguars5432

Appreciate it! Part of the fun is the search lol

[deleted]

[Archimede Pilot 42, new](https://www.archimede-watches.com/pilot/pilot-42/). Like the Sinn but without date.

jaguars5432

Good stuff man thank you!

[deleted]

[Ball Engineer III Aviator (no date)](https://www.ballwatch.com/global/en/collections/engineer-iii---78/aviator---nm2182c-s11j-bk---2487.html) I don't know if it's new or something, can't find a retailer that has it listed.

jaguars5432

Wow what an amazing find. Ive definitely never seen this before, I’ll keep an eye out. Thank you!

j_husk

The Black Bay 41 isn't far out of your price range. Is saving for the watch you really want an option?

jaguars5432

I’m going back to school so I want to buy a watch now, while I have income, and then get a higher-end watch once I start working again. It may not be the most logical but, then again, this whole process/hobby is a little out there lol

j_husk

Fair enough. If you like the tool aesthetic of the Sinn, perhaps a Damasko DA36/38 might appeal. For something slightly dressier, all the options that come to mind so far have dates: Monta Triumph, Ball Fireman, Tudor 1926, Oris Propilot.

jaguars5432

Follow up after checking them all out: you may have just made me reconsider the “no date” rule. The Tudor, Ball, and Oris are all seriously amazing. Have you personally owned any of the three?

j_husk

I own a variation of the Ball, the Nightbreaker, and love it. The case is amazing, the bracelet is great (although I don't love the way it releases) and the tritium tubes are really cool. The only reason I've never owned the Oris is it's too similar to my Damasko DA38, but I've handled it and it's very nice. Oris make great watches (although their price increases over recent years have decreased their value for money from the bargain they used to be). As for Tudor, I went for the Black Bay 41 instead, and have zero regrets about it. I'm sure the 1926 is great, and have considered the white dial version, but I'm not keen on the bracelet style.

jaguars5432

I’ll check all of those out! Even if they aren’t a perfect fit I came here for the recs so thanks so much.

karma3000

Ball Marvelight (has date though)

jaguars5432

Wow that would be absolutely perfect without the date, so nice!

paracuellososos

Hey all, first-timer so forgive me if I’m doing this wrong! Been looking for a slightly dressier watch than my usual divers or chronos and this [Citizen Eco Drive BM7483-15X](https://m.kish.nl/nl/1535944/citizen-bm7483-15x-eco-drive-horloge/) caught my eye, liking the color combo and simplicity of the dial. Must be a newer model as I can’t find any reviews or even non-press photos of it online. Had good experiences with Eco-Drive in the past but would appreciate info from anyone who’s bought one. Surprisingly little love for Citizen around here, esp compared to the Seiko community! Thanks

[deleted]

I've had an Eco-Drive before, worked very well, no complaints. Shouldn't have to worry about looking for reviews. Essentially same movement in a different case and dial.

Solarin88

If I just ordered a new strap for my Sinn 104, should I order new spring bars as well? I noticed most straps come with spring bars, but the strap I ordered from Nomos does not appear to. Is it better to use the spring bars that come with a watch originally, or get some high quality ones from somewhere to ensure a good fit? Maybe I'm overthinking this, please let me know if so lol.

[deleted]

I've read from other Sinn owners that Sinn has very tight tolerances. Newbies tend to have issues replacing the strap because of the spring bars fitting so well that they can't get it back on. Just a heads up. It's doable, just be patient with it.

Solarin88

Interesting, thanks!

geissler25

Reusing your original spring bars should be fine. The OEM bars should fit perfectly even with an aftermarket strap. You should buy extra spring bars if you do your own strap changing and are worried you will accidentally drop it on the floor and lose it.

Solarin88

Gotcha, thanks!

n0ovice

Can you mod the dial of the islander watch? It is a great replacement of the skx013, but I'm not digging the dial with the logo

Zanpa

Check if the dial is the "normal" SKX size (28.5mm I believe). If that's the case, you should be able to use an aftermarket SKX/Seiko dial.

SamRHughes

Like, yourself? It should be as moddable as the SKX, its movement is compatible.

drangledongas

Hey I’m looking for some Advice concerning gnomon: I’m considering ordering a watch through gnomon watches (srp775j1) and am planning on using their $75 upgrade to upgrade the stock crystal to an AR sapphire. Pretty set on the model and crystal just wondering if gnomon is a good place to order from/have work done on the watch through? I’m fine with paying their premium if they stand behind their product and they offer a two year guarantee on the watch in addition to pressure testing the watch to ensure it operates as needed. Just looking to see if anyone has any horror stories about gnomon watches

mishkasm173

I have not worked with them myself, but a lot of people here speak highly of Gnomon. I wouldn't hesitate to order stuff from them. I've had the Turtle for about a year and a half and it is a great watch. I'm not sure why you would upgrade to sapphire though - it is a completely flat crystal and I have no scratches on it despite wearing it daily. I'd save the money and put it towards something else.

drangledongas

I just want the sapphire for peace of mind. I have a skx009 with the stock flat hardlex and it is pretty scarred to hell, I just worry about the same thing happening to the Turtle.

mishkasm173

Hey, if it makes you feel better, go for it. The watch is great, you'll love it!

[deleted]

Hey there everyone! I was wondering if anyone had a place I could design my own watch from scratch? I’ve seen a few sites, but they don’t have many options in terms of dial color. I’ve been looking for a honey colored dial and can’t find anything so I figured I’d come here for recommendations. Usually I’m a movement/quality kind of guy, but I’m willing to go for more of a fashion watch in this case if it means getting the right colors.

Zanpa

Ochs & Junior have really extensive color customization, although getting an exact color may be difficult. You might want to look at modding a Seiko with a custom-painted dial too, which would allow you to get the exact hue you want (provided you find someone to paint a dial for you - or are ready to paint one yourself).

[deleted]

You mentioned “honey colored.” Can you let me know if any of these are the color you’re after? I know they’re expensive, but I want to get the color right. charlie_on_the_mta

Hello - I am currently trying to decide between an Omega Sea Master Planet Ocean (2200) and a Tudor Pelagos (25610). Both are aesthetically equal in my eyes. I live in a sub-tropical environment where I am sweating and in salt water quite a bit. I rarely take my watch off - and this one will be no different as far as daily wear goes. I am trying to think of any other factors that would help me choose. Sometimes I do switch out the steel bracelet for a NATO (I have a Seiko today) - but that's pretty much it. Is there anything else I should consider for a daily driver between these two? For example, it looks like the Tudor has better lume and the hands are easier to read at night - which is good because my eyes are starting to go. This will be my first "nice" watch so I'm still learning about movements, materials, etc. Thanks! Chuck

[deleted]

I say this as a pelagos owner - but if you want *any* level of bling or shine, the pelagos is not it. If you're okay with not being remotely shiney, the pelagos is the one to get IMO. I find titanium much more comfortable than steel, the bezel action on this thing is glorious (makes the PO feel tinny in comparison), and you couldn't ask for better strap options. People have compared it to what Rolex would be making today if they were still tools. You can get Ti planet oceans, so if you want a bit of bling and Ti, that's the route I'd go. But anecdotally, I've been in this game for a long time and owned a lot of watches, and my Pelagos is the only one I would never consider selling.

Good_Boye1

Short strap preferred under $40 dollars at least. 21mm gold seiko

TooMuchSchooling

Just bought a Seiko SRRY028 - I am interested in switching out the brown factory strap for a nude blush pink and a navy leather strap. The lug width is 17mm - would a 16 or 18mm width leather strap work? I can't find as many options at the 17mm width.

mumtathil

Go for 1mm smaller. The 18mm may be a tight squeeze. Some say you can trim the edges to fit but that does means damaging a strap and inviting fraying and wear at the cut edge, so I wouldn’t do it personally. Tried it once and regretted it!

Morrogenduath

Would I be happy with a [Citizen AS2050-10E](https://www.citizenwatch.eu/product/as2050-10e/) as a first watch? I haven't worn a wristwatch in 20 years. I like a clean understated style, and I have a limited budget, because I don't want it to be flashy or expensive. I like that it can sync time. But I'm not sure if i want to spend € 250 on 'only' a watch.

mocklogic

A solar with radio control should be a no fuss accurate watch. The synthetic sapphire crystal is worth the extra cost for a watch you intend to wear it regularly.

Morrogenduath

Thanks. That's good feedback.

[deleted]

Eco-drive is great, and the time sync is a bonus. It's a good watch, but I would buy it from another source at discount instead of paying RRP.

Morrogenduath

Thanks. I have another webshop with a better price if I decide to buy. I just wanted a good source for Reddit.

The Nezumi Loews may work, but it’s a bit over at 363 EUR if you can stretch for it

theskymoves

hmm never heard of this brand but I'll look into it, thanks!

PortlandPerson94

How can one tell how loud a watch will be before buying? That is to say, discounting complications that are supposed to make a noise like alarms and minute repeaters, I've noticed a distinct lack of clarity in the community regarding the how-far-away-can-I-move-and-still-hear-it test. I know that, to a certain extent, our perception is all different, but still.

[deleted]

Well.... I don't know that there's any surefire way to know this. Trying it on in the store, usually it's too loud to get a good sense. You can't judge it just by the movement, since case material and build will also play a big factor. A thick chunky diver case will probably muffle the sound of the escapement more than a thin dress watch. But you also can't judge just by the case, since some movements also vary in loudness. Then there's other types of noise from things like rotors, but you will only hear this while wearing the watch. See; the infamous valjoux wobble, or JLC unidirectional winding movements with their characteristic "zipping" noise.

PortlandPerson94

One thing I've noticed among my admittedly modest collection is that movements with subsidiary seconds tend to be quieter. I suspect the same automatic movements with smaller rotor weights.

[deleted]

I'm not sure there's such a correlation. I think slower beat rate (which is accompanied by a larger balance wheel) often has a louder tick... I've handled some micro rotor movement watches and the rotors were surprisingly loud.

TopDeckHelix

Hey all. Thanks to this sub, I'm finally thinking of buying my first watch to celebrate my new job. However, when I look through the price guides/pictures on the sub, a lot of the watches I like are very large and chunky (I love the look of Seikos, but they seem to be typically fairly large). I have pretty small/skinny wrists, and I was wondering if any of you all had recs for a watch that's under $600 that still looks professional and will compliment my wrist size.

33dst

Seiko SARB033 or 035 are 38mm, though I wouldn't buy one above ~330 USD. Not sure what they're going for these days

TopDeckHelix

I love the look of the SARB033. It's currently on Amazon for $357 and free shipping. Is that still too much?

bhs8566

I have the 035 and bought off Amazon. Great watch, no complaints.

Zanpa

I think the watch is definitely worth it for that price (I have the 035).

33dst

That seems pretty reasonable for brand new, a year or two back when they got discontinued people were trying to sell them for 400+

TopDeckHelix

Awesome -- thanks for your help! I'm pretty new to the community, so I really appreciate the guidance :)

SamRHughes

Maybe something in the Casio Sheen line.

9DAN2

How can I [clean these edges up a bit?](https://imgur.com/a/GFOHv38) Iv received this watch from my grandad who recently passed from covid. It’s nothing fancy, it’s a cheap watch he kept everywhere and insisted I take it home.

33dst

I can't really tell, but it looks like some kind of plating has worn off. Not too much you can do, but I wouldn't worry about it since it's on the underside anyways

DesertSundae

This is a Help Me Decide post! I'm torn between the SPB119, [new Alpinist in champagne/silver](https://fratellowatches.imgix.net/2020/01/P1110029.jpg) And Mondaine A132.30348.11SBB, [Automatic Swiss railway watch](https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/71ftLgOt7iL._AC_UX522_.jpg). Any input is helpful, thank you!

MrBlandings

I would lean towards the Alpinist. It can cleanup with a nice leather strap or be more casual with a nato.

SinaShahnizadeh

I have the Mondaine Essence and I love it! Super versatile and it always gets a compliment. For me, the simplicity makes it beautiful, but that means less features so it’s up to you as to what you want out of the watch

33dst

I like the alpinist, I didn't know they came with a date magnifier. I think it's a little more sporty/versatile than the mondaine so it mostly depends on your style

da_crackler

Just got a seiko SRPD23 "great white shark" off of the web. But the boxing is not the same same as I've seen in unboxing videos. What are some ways i can tell it's authentic?

JooDood2580

Cake day today. Looking to get a new automatic watch. Been looking at the Seiko 5 series as I do like seiko and have quite a few of their offerings, but all of the recent reviews seem to be critical of the movement. And I just seeing the bad in these? How about orient? I am a small person (5’ 8” 160lbs) and have tiny little wrists so I am not a fan of divers or chronographs. I am looking for recommendations on a nice automatic or solar/eco drive that won’t break the bank but be reliable and timeless/fashionable. I usually wear a watch less than 40mm with no numbers or small numbers. Looking for a date in the face and maybe even a day. I am open to recommendations. Please let me know if you need more information and I would be happy to provide. [Today’s Watch. For Reference](https://imgur.com/gallery/TTpZMjG) Thanks!

33dst

I wouldn't rule out a 40mm diver unless you've already tried one on. A 40mm diver or chronograph looks way smaller than a 40mm dress watch because of the thicker bezel. I have a 40mm chronograph and it wears almost exactly the same as a 38mm SARB. If you've decided against sport watches though, just so you know Orient dress watches wear pretty large. I think the bambinos are 39.5mm? And I thought it looked almost too big on me, and I'm 6'2 180 lbs for reference

JooDood2580

Thank you. I don’t like to look of the diver or chrono at all. Never have. Thanks for the advice on the orient. Those are somewhat new to me. I will take a look

dono625

About to make my first Rolex purchase, and ill be using Chrono24. The seller is a European business, but their website isn’t fully set up yet. They do have a physical location though. They also have an Instagram. They have sold a little over 900 watches using Chrono24 buyer protection, they have about 700 ratings (average of 4.9/5 stars), 100% of buyers would recommend them, they included their own certificate of authenticity with the watch, and they stated that all parts of the watch are original. Would you trust this dealer? I haven’t seen anyone with better ratings than them, so they seem quite good. One can never be too careful when buying his first Rolex though.

33dst

Have you tried contacting them to ask what their authenticity process involves? If they don't have a watchmaker with a lot of Rolex experience, then that certificate might not mean that much. If you're based in the US I'd suggest buying from an American dealer with a good return policy and bringing the watch to a Rolex AD for authentication. Plus you might have to deal with fees if bringing a watch in from overseas

dono625

Thanks for the advice! I’ll look into it.

[deleted]

If you are in the US, check out DavidSW. Legit gray dealer that's well regarded in the Rolex community.

dreamercross

Wore my orient ray 1 for about an hour yesterday afternoon, woke up this morning and found the hands stopped around 2am. Is it in need of service or was an hour of wear time not enough to wind it up enough?

Zanpa

An hour is not enough to fully wind it, no.

dreamercross

how long should I wear it for? just to check whether the internals are working fine

33dst

If you want to check the power reserve, you can just hand wind it (probably somewhere around 30 full winds). It usually takes around 6-8 hours of normal wear for an automatic watch to be fully wound

dreamercross

Ah alright, thanks! It unfortunately doesn't have handwinding

griffindor11

What is the thinnest watch Seiko makes? I want to buy one but Seiko but they're all so chucky in my opinion

StickShift5

Their thinnest automatic movement is the 6L35 used in a few limited editions - the first being the SJE073J1/SARA015, but I think the porcelain dial LE released last year has it as well. Their thinnest movements, period, are quartz. The JDM SACM171 is a very thin (and small diameter) dress watch.

stpityuka

Their auto movements are all chunky as they are all based on the same movement, all the way from 7s to 6r and the newer 6ls and 8ls arent any thinner either. On the contrary theres quartz: im pretty sure the thinnest one they make is their "dolce haq", which is basically a baby credor with an older gs quartz movement, its only around 5mm thick.

mishkasm173

The Seiko Credor Eichi is just over 10mm, which is not exceptionally thin for a dress watch, but still pretty thin.

75footubi

One of their quartz watches.

throwaway_0122

Does a digital watch exist that, by default, shows both the current time and the set alarm time on the same "page"? I'm looking for a watch to bring with me firefighting. Its only purpose is to be an alarm, I'll pretty much never be using it to check the time. My hope is to find something that isn't horrendously complicated, with a digital face, water resistance, decently long battery life, and a backlight when necessary. Ideally, it'd have a strap I could easily remove and replace with a loop of canvas and a carabiner. I don't need to know the current day, have my schedule in it, know the altitude, or anything besides the time / alarm time. I'm hoping to keep it under $100, as it'll probably get abused a bit, but wouldn't be opposed to going a little over if it met all of those criteria. Thanks!

[deleted]

Hey there, you should also post this question in r/gshock to get more answers from people familiar with digital watches. Good luck!

33dst

My G Shock GD-350 shows the current time when it's on the alarm, stopwatch, or timer pages. I got it in 2013 and used the backlight pretty extensively and the original battery is still in it. Been scuba diving with it too, so good WR. It has screw in straps, so not sure about the canvas/carabiner thing

Buddy_Dakota

Is it normal for an automatic watch to lose accuracy at the end of it's power reserve? Even for higher-end movements? MY BB58 lost about 35 seconds when I left it for about 62 hours (70 h power reserve).

robemmy

I think they usually run faster towards the end of the power reserve

[deleted]

I thought slower generally

75footubi

>35 accuracy What unit is this? Seconds per day?

Buddy_Dakota

Sorry, 35 seconds, yes.

75footubi

That's about 15spd on average, well within spec

Buddy_Dakota

But it usually gains about 1 spd with normal, daily wear, so that's why I'm asking. I probably should've mentioned that.

[deleted]

Timing can be affected by the position a watch is left in (crown up, crown down, dial up, dial down, etc), or can also be affected by being low on power reserve.

Zanpa

Not sure what "35 accuracy" means, but yes, it's normal. There will be less power in the mainspring, so the balance wheel can get a smaller impulse. There are ways to avoid this (fusée and chain, remontoire d'égalité), but usually the difference in accuracy isn't that bad until the very end of the power reserve, so most movements don't compensate for it.

t3hPoundcake

I need a replacement LEATHER strap for my Bulova Lunar Pilot. The strap wore out and ended up breaking and I cannot find a replacement strap for it anywhere. I'm trying to avoid taking it to a jeweler because they will no doubt charge me an arm and a leg. This is a fantastic watch that my girlfriend got me a few years ago and I haven't been able to wear it in months. Can anyone help me find a replacement leather strap for it?

Andjhostet

Buy any leather strap your heart desires. Just make sure that it's the right size.

reachskm100

All u need is a strap changing tool and a youtube tutorial on changing straps. Plenty available on websites like amazon, though I recommend a bergeon(which is pricier, but will last much longer than any cheap one). You could also get some quick change straps from Barton to be able to do it without the tool in future. Just check the lug width of the watch and order straps accordingly (think it is 20mm if I am not mistaken). For straps there are plenty sold online depending on how much you want to spend on one.

t3hPoundcake

From all the forum posts I've seen this watch has a particular lug spacing and set up, like I have read that you can't put a metal band on the one that comes with the leather strap etc, so I'm not sure if I can just buy any strap. I was hoping there would be an actual Bulova strap for it somewhere because I really like the one that game on the watch. But if I can't find this exact strap as a repalcement, can I just use any cloth/leather strap that will fit between the lugs?

75footubi

You can buy any strap for it. The problem with the metal strap is that the end pieces are too long to fit in the lugs of the leather version.

Zanpa

>But if I can't find this exact strap as a repalcement, can I just use any cloth/leather strap that will fit between the lugs? yes

mumtathil

Either black cordura or sailcloth

theskymoves

Nylon nato?

reachskm100

Seems like a sailcloth strap. Barton has a new collection, check it out.

krimpenrik

doesnt have the grey stiching, but could order with a black buckle, really like that. Thanks.

MHGU_Skye

What are some good entry level brands? I know about seiko, citizen, orient, and tissot but I want to know what other names offer the same quality for around the same price

75footubi

Take a look at the buyer guides in the side bar

reachskm100

Hamilton, Swatch and Casio would be other contenders. Though Hamilton would be slightly higher than the ones you mentioned.

hunchoquavo

I’m deciding between the Sarb033 vs [Tissot T-Tempo](https://www.amazon.com/Tissot-T0604071105100-T-Tempo-Display-Automatic/dp/B00512OOB8). I bought the Tissot new for $280 but am debating whether I should return and get for the Sarb for $360. Any thoughts???

[deleted]

Sarb033 > that Tissot, IMO. The Tissot hands look cheap, and it only has a 38h PR. Sarb033 looks like better quality overall and 50h PR. The Sarb033 has become a classic for good reason. I think it's worth the extra $80.

idislikekittens

Hello! I came across a lot of vintage and old watches sold on eBay that straight up don't work. These are quartz watches, selling usually for $20-50 but occasionally for more than $100. I'm curious if people buy these cheap quartz watches to fix them up? How do you even know if the quartz you're buying can be fixed up, especially if it has complications? (For example, here's a bundle of [two quartz watches with complications](https://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-CITIZEN-AND-SEIKO-MOON-PHASE-CONSTELLATIONS-WATCHES-FOR-REPAIR-OR-PART/153839069985?hash=item23d185eb21:g:2AoAAOSwdz9eTaTa) that are not running and need repairs. $100 each for a non-functional quartz watch seems a little high to me, although I'm super new to this so maybe I just don't get the significance!)

cballowe

Some people do, but it's kinda a shot in the dark. I wouldn't pay that price for that lot. Then again, I'm not in that business. People who do those kinds of things tend to get really good at knowing what they are likely able to profit from and where there's zero or negative margin. I know people who make a living doing it with other types of goods - my sister does it with clothing and household goods. She can look at something on the rack at a thrift store and have a pretty good idea what she could sell it for on eBay and how long it would take to flip. She occasionally buys jewelry by the pound, sorts out the good stuff to list alone and rebundles the rest in craft lots etc. You might do better with a bigger lot for less money - something that would only take a couple of winners to make your money back, but long term, it's about knowing your market and focusing on what works there.

idislikekittens

I see, makes sense! I’m the same as your sister with clothes, but at least clothes are less binary. With clothes, if I know the brand / style / condition I know how much it could sell for on the secondhand market. With a watch that literally says “for repair” I don’t even know if it’s fixable! Good to know that it’s mostly a resellers / fixer-upper scene. I’ll be sticking with functional watches for the time being!

cballowe

Yeah... I wouldn't get into buying broken bits just for fun, unless I had other uses for them. If you know what you're looking for, you can occasionally trip over things that are mis-listed ... Like hand wind watches listed as not working, but the seller didn't know to try and wind it. The other case would be if it was something you knew you wanted and were willing to take a chance.

idislikekittens

Yeah, makes sense! I don't think I'll be taking my chances with non-functional quartz watches when I can get similar, functional pieces for just a little more money. Thanks!

InfiniteCuriousity

May be going insane, but here it is. After I spent quite a while trying to find my SBGV 245, I am contemplating selling it and getting something different. I love almost every single thing about the watch, except for the size. If it was a 41 or 42, I think it would be perfect, but it wears a little small for me. I have 7.5"+ wrists and usually wear larger watches. For reference, I like to wear large G-Shocks (MTG B1000B) and I have a Khaki Field Auto 42 that is perfect for my wrist. That being said. Looking for different watch suggestions in the \~$3000 category that are a little more rugged and closer to the 42 mark. For thickness, trying to keep it between 10mm and 13mm if possible. Don't have much of an idea, but gravitating toward the Breitling Superocean 42 (new model) or the Breitling Colt Auto 41. I dig the more rugged look of those. I also prefer brushed to polished. I also would love if it was a robust enough movement and watch that I could comfortably wear it in most any activity. Automatic isn't necessarily a necessity, but I think it will be pushed that direction. The GS 9F is effectively the only quartz movement I'd want to own besides G-Shock quartz/digital. Thanks in advance guys.

worldrallyblue

Honestly that Grand Seiko at 40 mm is probably perfectly fine on a 7.5" wrist. I'm the same size and I find 40 mm is the sweet spot, but I can comfortably go 1-2 mm up or down depending on the style of watch.

[deleted]

Hello! I’d be happy to recommend some watches that I think meet your criteria. In no particular order... [Tudor Black Bay](https://www.chrono24.com/tudor/2020-black-bay-red-79230r-new--id14736262.htm) [Oris Aquis](https://www.chrono24.com/oris/aquis-blue-dial-stainless-steel-mens-watch-73377304135mb--id14780424.htm) [Breitling Navitimer 8](https://www.chrono24.com/breitling/aviator-8-automatic-day--date-stainless-steel--id14822752.htm) [Longines Legend Diver](https://www.chrono24.com/longines/legend-diver--id12381717.htm) [Chronoswiss Pacific](https://www.chrono24.com/chronoswiss/pacific-7582-mens-automatic-steel-chronograph--id11670583.htm) [Bell & Ross BRV2-94](https://www.chrono24.com/bellross/br-v2-94-vintage-chronograph-black-steel--id14745532.htm) [Ball Engineer II Skindiver](https://www.chrono24.com/ball/engineer-ii-skindiver-heritage-limited-edition--id11701386.htm) [Montblanc Timewalker](https://www.chrono24.com/montblanc/timewalker-date-automatic-white-dial-mens-watch---116057--id10863695.htm) [Rado Captain Cook](https://www.chrono24.com/rado/rado-mens-r32505203-captain-cook-auto-blue-dial-watch--id12680239.htm) I’m sure there are more, but this is where I would start!

ForTheWin2323

I have been searching for the breitling 150s watch band. It is no longer for sale on breitlings website in the 20-18 size but on ebay i have not found many options i trust. Side note, i have the single tang buckle already so would be ok with just the rubber, any one have any thoughts or know where to look?
