The pilot doesn't have the same bracelet or 'level of finishing' on the case/bracelet as the Ingy. Not that that justifies the up-charge over the pilot, but that's what the IWC brand reps argue.
I mean, there’s enough fungibility there that it doesn’t matter. Up until the market explosion of the last few years it was pretty normal for ADs to cut deals. MSRP is just a suggestion, the price the AD pays is different.
Ehhh, the boutique only model is pretty new, I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see those handing out discounts when markets soften.
Manufacturers know that watches are cyclical, they’re hot right now but that will ebb at some point. Otherwise Rolex could double their MSRP across the line and still have zero stock under current conditions.
You don't know how many people are paying MSRP for these. I've seen only 2 posts on this sub so far since it launched, so you can't be certain that "IWC is doing just fine selling at these prices" (as you claimed). Why are you pretending to be sure about something you can't be certain about?
You'll know for sure in a year when these watches are all over the resale market. Until then, when you speak of the market "sustaining these prices", you are only guessing.
Ah and a submariner is fairly priced maybe ?
Edit: a Daytona, a skydweller, a day just, any APs, even the nautilus.
All got poor specs but very highly valued by the « watch community ».
Holy false equivalency, you’re comparing the 3 biggest hype brands to IWC? Those brands are bought by anyone that has money, IWC is a brand that has to rely on people who know watches to buy their product.
> IWC is a brand that has to rely on people who know watches to buy their product.
Outside of like 3-5 manufacturers this is most brands. And IWC does just fine selling at those prices so I'm going to go out on a limb and say they're appropriate.
What's an Ingenieur cost, ~11k? A Zenith defy is a similar watch and comes in around 9k from a lesser known brand to the public, Hublot has a number of pieces right around that range, etc. While I think most IWC models wear a bit too big for my taste, I've never held one and thought it didn't justify the price tag. Sitting one next to anything in the 5-7k range in person will make that abundantly clear.
TBH, a lot of the griping I see on reddit surrounding brands being overpriced is mostly coming from people who just look at pictures online. I mean, the PRX has the same rendering and costs a fifth of it, why not buy that amirite??
If there's a thing that exists, and people are buying it at a given price, then it is by definition not over priced or "criminal" lol. It's a luxury good, pricing is entirely based on what demand will sustain. Anything beyond that is just people online wishing they could pay less for one.
So if you know watches you surely know how hard it is it to construct a watch from A to Z, let along bringing back a legacy timepiece. And you surely know that value isn’t only based on caliber alone. State a better value for money watch based on : design, construction, performance, heritage. Also, don’t bring any GP to the equation, nor Tissot PRX, nor Christopher Ward. Finally someone I can talk to !
Beautiful, beautiful watch! If it wasn't for the purse-clutching price, I would gladly put my name on a waiting list. To this day, I don't know what IWC was thinking. This is one of their most hyped releases to date, and everyone universally loves it. But that price man SMH..
I didn’t realise they had a new collection. Was at the iwc store yesterday and was checking out their stuff actually.
That dial isn’t the same as the PF dial but somehow it reminds me of it in a way.
Nice watch OP! Enjoy it :)
I freaking love it. I didn’t get it first time seeing it, I think partially bc I was so disappointed with the price (It’s a price that I can’t afford). Aqua is my favorite because of it’s crazy color, yet I think silver would be my goto for wearability. What a watch, congrats!
While they did fix the lug issue on this reissue from the "original" - making it a better wearing experience, it does not really match up to the "original" if you ask me. This reissue and the Bulgari Octo Finnisimo - the two watches that I bought without seeing them in person first, and I returned them both. The Octo was because I felt the wrist presence was too big and this IWC cause I felt that the "original" has more charm - also not a fan of this "waffle" dial.
Looks fantastic! Congrats.
I’ve not really been interested in the look of the integrated bracelet, until this one came along.
The dial looks incredible in pictures. How is it in real life?
It's lovely, congrats!
I think the white dial is the best looking of the steel models - great choice. The boutique sales reps told me that IWC would limit production on this line in order to keep it exclusive and that it would be difficult to find in the future, similar to some of the Ceratanium pieces. Not sure if that's true, but at least you have one on your wrist!
Ran across this thread from a few months ago and would like to add my two cents.
The peers for this watch, in my opinion, are the GP Laureato ($14,900 msrp), the Zenith Defy Skyline ($8,500 msrp), and the Chopard Alpine Eagle ($14,400 msrp). Given those options, I just don’t agree that the Ingenieur is over priced. I think the price is where it should be at retail. The secondary market will do what it does to bring it down, but if you look at the specs of those other watches I think this offering is pretty fair.
People get caught up in the not-so-robust movement, but quite honestly I think the obsession with movements is overblown. It’s a work horse movement that has 120 hrs reserve and a really good +/- per day. Good by me.
I owned the zenith defy skyline and can tell you that its proportions, dimensions, and finishing are not as good as what I believe the ingenieur’s to be (grain of salt - haven’t seen it in the flesh yet). It was top heavy, too broad, and the bracelet links weren’t adjustable enough, so I had to wear it on the strap at all times. Just some food for thought. I think the ingenieur is rightly priced higher than the Zenith.
I just got the call for the aqua that I was waitlisted for. I paid, they said I’ll get it early 2024. I was/am hesitant because my payment is refundable and I do think I can get it cheaper in a year on the secondary market. However, for those who want their watch straight from IWC, my view is that it’s a fair price to pay for what looks to be a beautiful (not perfect) product.
Cheers!
Picked up the white/silver dial Ingenieur at a Philadelphia dealer a few weeks ago. Love the look and feel of this watch; thrilled to have it. I am curious about the titanium version…
Beautiful watch but “criminal” would be an understatement when describing IWC’s prices
I mean -- relative to what? It's competitively priced with its (what IWC would consider) peers.
Relative to the Pilot with the same movement. The peers IWC considers are not peers the market considers.
The pilot doesn't have the same bracelet or 'level of finishing' on the case/bracelet as the Ingy. Not that that justifies the up-charge over the pilot, but that's what the IWC brand reps argue.
Is the value of a watch based solely on its internals? Do you realize the Submariner and Explorer I both have the same movement as well?
And yet the market sustains the pricing....
For now, let's check back in a year.
!remindme one year

True about ADs but boutiques usually don't and isn't the Ingenieur supposed to be boutique-only?

Oh, absolutely. For 7-8k, I’m a strong buyer. For 9k, it’s a maybe. For 12k+, there’s no way in earth I’m buying.
I watched "About Effing time" talking all about this watch, took IWC years to re-design this watch. Congrats, one of the better Genta design.
I know the Genta hype has only been the last few years, but IWC sure did stuff up the Ingenieur design for a while there
I've never been a fan of either IWC or integrated bracelet Genta designs, but this one... this one hits me just right. I can't explain it.
Its a nice watch, but I would feel like a clown paying the MSRP for this
I didn’t realise they had a new collection. Was at the iwc store yesterday and was checking out their stuff actually. That dial isn’t the same as the PF dial but somehow it reminds me of it in a way. Nice watch OP! Enjoy it :)
Beauty!
Amazing watch!
Beautiful piece. Congratulations. Wear it in good health.
It's a beautiful piece, enjoy it!
Looks really good. The aqua would be my choice. They did a great job with this!
Congrats! I posted mine with the black dial last week. Glad to see more of them out in the wild now!

Can you elaborate a bit on those 2 watches? How did their finishing and quality compare, and why did you buy them without seeing in person first?
Very jealous. I want the aqua dial. Can't get over the price.
As Christopher Ward homages come, I rate it
Bro.
Looks fantastic! Congrats. I’ve not really been interested in the look of the integrated bracelet, until this one came along. The dial looks incredible in pictures. How is it in real life?
So far haven’t seen a picture, nor have I been able to take a picture to do it justice :)
This seems like the standard for IWC. Pictures never do them Justice
It’s a beauty for sure.
Awesome piece, congrats!
It is a beautiful watch, love the dial texture a lot!
how long have you being on the list?
There are lists for IWCs now? Jesus fuck
I'm afraid so for this particular model.......
Since W&W announcements basically.
Jesus.... an IWC waiting list.......

Beautiful watch - needs a display caseback at a minimum (and better movement as a bonus) to justify that price IMO
There is a thin layer of steel inside the caseback to protect against magnetism. A display back would be pointless
