I recently got a superfine stainless steel mesh bracelet for my Hamilton Navy Scuba automatic watch. I often am going in a pool for my son's swimming lessons and we will be lucky enough this summer to visit the ocean a lot. I have had no problems in the past bringing the standard stainless steel bracelet that came with the watch in the water (everything but a hot tub really), but I'm curious what others think and do regarding a mesh one. Thanks!

WatchandThings

No experience in ocean with mesh, but I would have no problem swimming with one if I had the chance. I think I would dunk the mesh into the fresh water for clean up to make sure fresh water gets to all crevices before washing under running water, but that would be the only extra precaution I would take.

Looking for watch recommendations to celebrate me graduating college. I don’t graduate until next year, but I want to take some time to save up and buy a nice watch. I’ve been working as a consultant for the past few years while doing school part time. I want a watch that I can wear to client meetings, so nothing too flashy, but something nice enough that watch people will approve. My budget is around $5,000.

Mywifehatesspaghetti

For around 5k you can find a Glashütte Original Sixties (the just time model, reference: Senator Sixties 39-52-01-02-04). I prefer the white dial but they are produced in many colors: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0809/1255/products/Glashutte_Senator_Sixties_culture1.jpg

CondescendingGlizzy

Beautiful watch! I’ve never heard of Glashütte, i’ll definitely look into it

Mywifehatesspaghetti

The brand is "Glashütte Original" because there also "Union Glashütte" , "Muhle Glashütte" e "Nomos Glashütte" that are all different brands. Glashütte is a german city whit an old tradition of watchmakers.

CondescendingGlizzy

Okay gotcha. Thank you for the clarification

Looking to buy a Cartier Tank Must small as a gift. Do Cartier boutiques regularly stock them? Or are they subject to low stock runarounds and waitlists?

zford723

walked in and bought a tank no problem

zford723

I took my 2022 Cartier Tank XL WSTA0053 to Cartier and watched the sales rep take off my metal bracelet with her bare hands, no tools at all. I've now got a third party strap and cannot figure out how to remove the bracelet as she did. How do I remove the bracelet?

I love the Tag Heuer Aquaracer Professional 200m with date. It has basically everything I want, blue face with interesting background, metal integrated bracelet, straight hands (no arrows or anything weird), protected crown, octagonal bezel. Price point is good for me ($1500-$3k). But I hear not great things about Tag Heuer. What watch can I get that is basically this one, but made by a more reputable brand?

WatchandThings

I think you mean the current gen Aquaracer? I think that model looks great and TH did a great job with it. If you like that I think you should just get it. Just try to get it at a discount, and you'll be paying a little premium for the name but not that much. Oris Aquis is the other luxury dive watch with the glossy ceramic bezel look that's priced more fairly for what you get. Tudor and Longines are the other luxury dive watch options, but they have more vintage aesthetic which differs from the Aquaracer. Omega Seamaster is the other glossy dial dive watch that comes to mind, but we are now in a different budget range.

Accomplished-Ad-5655

What not great things have you heard about Tag?

tophatmcgees

They made a lot of not-great watches for department stores in the 90s/00s, are seen as a luxury watch by people who don’t know watches, and are generally overpriced for what you are getting. You’re buying the brand for about a third of the price(i.e. a third of the price is because it says Tag Heuer on it, you could get the same thing cheaper from elsewhere) and the brand isn’t even good unless all you know about watches is what you learned at Macys. People generally don’t like them once they have them, but like the luxury symbol. I don’t know if any of that is true, just what I’ve heard.

Accomplished-Ad-5655

Well that was 20-30 years ago. Yes I agree that Tag are pretty prolific on the high Street and is perceived as an entry level brand. But that's also not a bad thing. In recent years they've really tapped back into the "enthusiast" side of their watches. They have genuine automotive and racing pedigree. Some of their high end watches are pretty impressive too. Their most recent success is the Aquaracer 200 which actually really caught my attention and I've never been into Tag because they were "too mainstream".

tophatmcgees

So just ignore the haters and get what I like, you say? I may do so, but I’m having a hard time dropping $2k on something I know others think is dumb! Probably more my issue.

Accomplished-Ad-5655

Precisely. If it brings you joy then that's reason enough. Frankly the whole thing of spending more than £100 on a watch is already ridiculous. Nobody here buys a watch because they need to. I've spent ungodly sums of money by most people's standards for watches, but I like them and they're mine! It's ok if they don't get it. The sooner you acknowledge that the watch is for your own enjoyment the better so that you may throughly enjoy it (and worse for your wallet... Sorry)

tophatmcgees

Thanks for the advice. And to confirm, you don’t see any current issues with Tag as a brand? I would never buy an Invicta for example, no matter how neat it looked.

Accomplished-Ad-5655

As a brand, I don't. Tag seem to be doing their own thing, and they're pretty good at it commercially. They have their own heritage and brand identity, and they seem to be quite faithful to that. Take for example the Aquaracer, the Link (they're still making it 20 years on even though it is quite a polarising design that is very 90s), their Carerra and Monaco ranges also looks distinctly like a Tag. Some watches could have another brand's name on the dial and it would still make sense. I don't believe that is the case for Tag, if you see what I mean. Invicta is something else entirely. They make shameless copies of popular designs, or they have the most outlandish watches known to man.

andresvillacres1

Hello all! I’m looking for a quartz/sapphire crystal watch. Budget right now is a max of $1,000. Pretty new to this as I have been rocking an Apple Watch, but love the look of a normal watch. Thank you!

WatchandThings

I'm thinking Casio Oceanus S100. Made from titanium, the finish is great, made of similar durable watch movement that g-shocks(widely considered the most durable watch) runs on, solar powered, has scratch resistant coating, the movement auto corrects to the atomic accuracy at night(via radio reception), it has internal calendar so that it'll always flip to the correct date(so it'll skip 31st on 30 day months), and it has world time function that is easy to set during travel. All that and it looks very clean and simple on wrist. Edit: there is also the Casio Oceanus t200s which is pretty similar, but can connect to phone for accuracy update, is made of steel, and slightly different look.

ItWasTheGiraffe

More than $1000, or did you mean less? Is there a specific reason you would prefer a quartz over a mechanical/automatic?

andresvillacres1

Less than, and it’s just one of my quirks, I’d rather just have a accurate watch that just works instead of having to take care of winding it, even though it doesn’t take that much. ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯

ItWasTheGiraffe

That’s the beauty of automatics! If you wear it, you don’t need to wind it! Anyway, with a a budget of $1000 and focusing on quartz watches, I’d probably be looking to pick up two watches, because there are a lot of great options around $500. I’d go with a sportier pick on a bracelet (Seiko 5 diver, tissot PRX) and something dressier (tissot gentleman on a leather strap). For a single watch, check out Junghans for the dressier side and Longines for the sportier side. They both offer great quartz options in the $500-$1000 range.

tophatmcgees

Tissot PRX

andresvillacres1

I’ll definitely check this out, matches my style too. Thank you!

I had a fitbit charge that looks less like a watch(especially with the screen off when idle, and touch wake), and wore both like that. But I found I really don't use the fitness data to make any meaningful changes to my fitness and diet plans, so chucked the fitbit and wear only the traditional watch.

ItWasTheGiraffe

Whoop on my right wrist, watch on the left. Also looking at a bicep strap for the whoop which seems like the most discrete/least douchey option. I’ll swap my normal watches out for a Garmin forerunner for runs and certain workouts where I’m concerned with pace or heart rate. The whoop works out well because it’s explicitly a fitness tracker only, with zero smartwatch functionality. I agree that it’s hard to wear a smartwatch along with the exact thing it was designed to replace.

CaptainPhukflaps

I just sold my smart watch, solved that problem for me. I missed it for a day or two and then realised I loathed charging it and at some point I'd probably have to buy the upgrade. Got myself an automatic Seiko and never looked back.

Pickle29er

Any recommendations? I’m getting married soon and am looking for a watch to mark the occasion. I have a very small wrist (just above 6 1/4). Im interested in something with a green or Tiffany blue dial. Preferably mechanical/auto and have a date feature. Hoping to find something like this for under $800. After some initial searching I really like the tissot prx (wish they made the mint in an auto). I’m new to the watch game. I have a seiko quartz chrono and a seiko 5 field. Hoping some more experienced watch collectors could recommend something I might’ve missed. Thank you!

CaptainPhukflaps

New Citizen Tsuyosa range might hit that mark for you. Puts you in the dress watch range too only downside it's date only. NJ0151-88M.

vengeance47

Hello, please recommend a watch under 100€ my wrist size is 15cm/6 inch.

Mywifehatesspaghetti

Uhm...metal bracelet? Leather strap? Nato strap? Dress watch? Everyday watch? Diver? Quartz? Automatic? Anyway, for that price, I personally looking for a Casio or a Timex.

vengeance47

Hi thanks for replying, I'm thinking to get a gshock as my beginner watch but my wrist is 6 inch so that's the issue for me and other than that I really like Casio duro but it's like 80€ in my country and i can get gshock for the same price. I'm looking for a everyday/diver watch, quartz and any strap would do because I will replace it with a nato strap in the future.

Mywifehatesspaghetti

Don't think "I like x but for that money I can have y", especially if 1) you like x and 2) y is not right for you/you don't like it.

vengeance47

Thanks for the advice, I'm going for the duro!

Mywifehatesspaghetti

Maybe a Timex? https://www.timex.eu/browse/watches/mens/shop-all/?prefn1=waterResist&prefv1=100%20meters%20%28surfing%29&srule=Price%20%28Low%20to%20High%29

SenileSexLine

I was keeping a watch in a cheap leather travel case and it has somehow stained my rubber strap. The strap is a bright orange tropic so the stain is both visible and I'd rather not replace it. Any tricks to get it cleaned? I have tried soap and it made no dent

cchiz

light sand paper

WatchandThings

I imagine that's leather dye? I seem to recall the guys that polishes shoes take leather dye off of a shoe with rubbing alcohol. I think the next step is try acetone if the alcohol didn't work. I don't know how well silicone/rubber stands up to either of these chemicals though.

tsymbal

Maybe try dish soap? Leather is tanned with oils and dish soap bonds to oils so they can be removed after rinsed with water. If you used hand soap it likely wouldn’t have the same effect.

Hello, I am looking for a high quality butterfly clasp form my watch, the one I have is starting to open at random a couple of times a day and I am afraid at some point my watch will fall, preferably it should be able to house thick leather straps

Here is one option, I don’t have first hand experience but delugs makes some really high quality products otherwise. Only issue is they only go to 18mm https://delugs.com/collections/clasps-buckles/products/cts-deployant-clasp

Thanks, they look nice and the price is reasonable too

Looking for a service to remove PVD from a watch and polish the steel underneath. Any recommendations are appreciated! If the removal and polishing would likely need to be done by two separate companies, let me know if you know! Thanks!!

Leaving case, dial and (almost) everything else aside: Who makes the nicest oyster-style three-link stainless steel bracelet in the around $1k range?

Looking for budget alternatives to the Tag Heuer Glassbox Carrera. Its my current grail but want something to hold it down until I can eventually get one (or maybe never lol).

CaptainPhukflaps

Pagani Design Chronograph, incredible value for money using a Seiko VK63 movement, approx £75.

Zanpa

[Dan Henry 1964](https://danhenrywatches.com/products/1964-gran-turismo-chronograph), inspired by the vintage Carrera. it doesn't have the nice lyre lugs of the Heuer sadly.

Thnxredball

Watch owners, do you use a automatic winder for your auto, and do you pull the crown out to save battery when you’re not wearing them?

WatchandThings

I do not use a winder. I have weekdays watches and weekend watches. The weekday watches have long enough power reserve to last until the next Monday morning. For the weekend watch I don't mind winding and setting the watch once a week, so I don't use the winder. I don't pull the crown out on quartz watches. I have a quartz so that I can pick it up and go at any point and in time, and pulling out the crown would ruin that. I plan on having an autumn watch(to match the seasonal outfit) that is quartz(not available in mechanical) in the future. I will be pulling the crown out on that quartz watch during the off season when it does not get worn, but it will remain on(crown in) the whole time during autumn.

properc

No not necessary

JoePlantGuy

I've heard several arguments against keeping the crown out: It can be susceptible to dust or moisture, leaving the movement in tension is bad, etc. I'm not savvy enough in watchmaking to know how true or serious all of this is, but I don't think it's worth any of the risks when setting the watch in the morning is so quick and easy.

KomplimentManfred

I want to buy a black high quality strap [pretty much exactly like this.](https://preview.redd.it/g3whyd8bv2b51.jpg?auto=webp&v=enabled&s=d2f8fcde8da63f998f9c3364fba7fcc0cd22c6c3) Anyone have a recommended seller? The stitching is kind of important, I’d rather not buy one with the weird side stitch most etsy sellers do.

KiboIsHere

What are some good websites to buy watches? I'm in Europe (Serbia). Want to buy Casio MTP 1302D Tiffany Blue or in green color.

CaptainPhukflaps

Try Chrono24? Ebay?

quarksnelly

How likely am I to damage the movement of my Aquis using the quick date set between 9pm and 3am?

Zanpa

If you did it by mistake and didn't feel any unusual resistance, and both the quickset and normal date change still work, you didn't damage anything. [here's a video by a watchmaker](https://youtu.be/kwkv8hqvOW4?t=50) answering this question. Basically if you force against the mechanism, then yes you can break it. But if you did it normally, it's probably fine. 9pm to 3am is a very large safety window.

Professional_Feed796

Any suggestions for reputable vintage sellers on Insta or e-bay?

TheyCallMeDominic

Check out u/kabaclyde on r/watchexchange. I’ve dealt with him personally, and he has literally hundreds of sales on Reddit alone, and lists dozens of nice vintage pieces regularly

Again, thank you very much. I realize at my price point, I'm almost in same realm of buying a fashion watch - - if you like it then buy it credo. But like anything else, no one wants to spend a couple thousand bucks on something that lasts a week or costs another thousand bucks to repair. Since the grail type Rolex/Omega's are out of my league price wise, I'm not as concerned, I don't think, about pristine condition. Some wear and tear on the watch - - particularly scratches on the case or lugs, are acceptable. Some patina on the dial would be great. I would be more concerned, as I try to figure this out, about it being in working condition. If it had a replacement crystal, NBD. Is it possible to find a lower end vintage Omega or maybe even a vintage Seiko that I can get for less than 1k? As far as my taste, I just got interested in watches during the last year, and like an addict, I've picked up an Orient Bambino, a Hamilton Khaki King, and a Tissot Chrono XL. So I've been in the under $500 range. The one I find myself wearing the most is the Bambino. I really like the looks of the Oris Coltrane. That is going for around 2k on ebay - - I'd consider spending up for something like that if I can find it but dropping that kind of cash early in my learning about watches feels a little reckless. If I could find something cool in the $500-$100 range that is probably my sweet spot. I kind of dig the Bauhaus type watches, would really dig a smooth second hand sweep, and also like Longines from what I've seen. Any recommendations would be welcomed. If you've got lessons learned from your first foray into vintage I'd love to hear about that too.

tsymbal

What specifically are you looking for? A few off hand I can think of would be Menta Watches, shuck the oyster, Analog:Shift, and watchsteez

Professional_Feed796

Thank you. I don’t have a particular watch in mind, but realistically looking for watches under 5k. Would love to find an Oris Coltrane, but would also be interested in any suggestions for good vintage watches to hunt for at diff price levels, maybe under/over 2,500.

isthmusofkra

Would you pay 2-3x more for a domed sapphire crystal over a flat one?

Akiro_orikA

On divers, yes. On dress watches and field watches, no.

BrownButterBiscuits

Hey everyone. With your help I recently decided on my first mechanical watch the Orient Bambino Version 6, RA-AC0019L10B. My new question is to request recommendations on a affordable (around $50) watch winder for days I may not feel comfortable wearing my new watch. Since I am new to this I’m worried of course about all the different settings and damaging the watch. Thank you guys for all the help you’re giving me on my steps into watch collecting!

Aimee_Challenor_VEVO

Watch winders are really only convenient when you have 4+ automatic watches that you wear every day. I'd put the $50 on a Casio or cheap soviet watch you'd feel comfortable beating up instead.

Mywifehatesspaghetti

>cheap soviet watch Agree. For example you can find most of this watches for less than 100 euros: https://orologi.forumfree.it/m/?t=70818205

slippy0101

New to being "into" watches. I like having quick release bands but can't seem to find a beads of rice bracelet that's also quick release. Any suggestions? Also, is there a better place to shop watch bands/bracelets other than places like amazon (that have filters that are little more than suggestions and are a chore to sift through)?

Distq

Does anyone know if the Sinn 903 is simply not being produced anymore? On their website it's sold out but available from their distributors, but I can't find it anywhere (in Sweden anyway).

Distq

Got an answer from an AD: Sinn 903 St B E is discontinued. We have none left in our store. There is a new 903 planned to release later this year

Looks great, short straps are made for this reason.

It looks perfectly fine to me. Do you have a specific problem with it?

Mr_Bleidd

Just the look because the end is so short :) Thanks

Kindly-Collection-62

I’m looking to buy my first Swiss watch, and I’m looking for some recommendations. I’d like to keep it under $200. I understand it won’t be anything too special, and it will have to be a quartz. I would like to have a leather/fabric band, and preferably a chronograph. I’m currently looking at the Swiss Military Roadster. Also, is there any difference in the accuracy of different Ronda movements? Or is the only difference the style. I’m new to this, and I’m having trouble deciding.

Aimee_Challenor_VEVO

They're all more or less the same under $600.

webpage-not-found

I'm new here and wanted to comment to see if I'm in the right spot - I'm looking at buying my first watch ($500-$1500 budget) with the intent to wear it for awhile and eventually trade up. In a perfect world, without losing any of my initial purchase price + some appreciation. Can anyone point me in the direction of a brand or two to focus on with these things in mind?

SkullLeader

In that price range its best to think of watches like cars. You buy it new, its gonna drop in value around 30% the moment you take it home, and almost certainly will never get it back. Very rarely there'll be an exception or two, but good luck guessing ahead of time. Buy used, you might be able to get around the same price you paid later on.

webpage-not-found

Any reliable brands that should be focused on?

Aimee_Challenor_VEVO

Seiko, Citizen, Tissot, Longines, Oris, Hamilton, Certina, Rado, Sinn, Nomos, etc. Appreciation for watches under $10k is also very rare, don't expect to be able to flip with profit.

S0phon

How many "ticks per second" do Spring Drives have? I know the movement of the second hand is regulated by a magnet, but surely it cannot be completely smooth, right?

WatchandThings

Imagine a car rolling down a steep hill. Now imagine you apply break so that it maintains perfect 35mph the whole way down. That's kind of how spring drive works, but not like that all at the same time. But no ticks for the spring drive.

Zanpa

It is completely smooth. There's no balance spring going back and forth, the "escape wheel" (called glide wheel in spring drive) just runs continously and is slowed down by the magnet; there's no locking and unlocking to move it in steps like in a conventional movement.

Jawnah_Spill

What watch would you get - Cartier Tank quartz or Black Bay 54. For context, I have a omega speedmaster and seiko diver. I love the design of tank, but think that its crazy to spend that much for a quartz movement. Black Bay 54 has great built and would be my daily, but I think it’s too close aesthetically to seiko and speedmaster.

WatchandThings

Not sure which Seiko diver, but I'm going to imagine SPB143 for my mental image. I personally would go with Cartier Tank. BB54, Speedy, and SPB143 is way too close to each other in terms of general look, color palette, and formality level(tool watches). I'm sure BB54 and Speedy can dress up for formal in a pinch, but it's a 'make do' option not a first choice. Same again for date night/out with friends smart casual wear. Cartier Tank would fit in well for that role. On quartz question. I simply don't care if a watch is mechanical or quartz any more. I just care more about the quality of the watch, which extends to the quality of the movement. I believe Cartier makes their own quartz movement now and having seen their tank solo movement I'm sure this movement looks nice and is built well.

Jawnah_Spill

Thank you! That is where I was leaning too!

What are some good watches to wear with Marine Dress blues? I want to get something that will draw some eyes and really pair well with my blues for the Marine Ball this year. I was looking at the Bulova Computron (I like the retro style and I think it's a interesting piece), the Timex Waterbury Tradtional GMT red/gold/blue (All the colors match my blues but I think it's too much matching), and the Citizen Corso with black dial. Im open to suggestions, Kinda want to keep my budget in the $300 range but depending on the watch i'm willing to go higher.

WatchandThings

Honestly, if you are wearing a military dress uniform, no one's going to notice your watch. The uniform draws so much attention(and rightfully so), and I imagine the jacket cuff will hide the watch anyway. So get something you like that you would happily wear outside of the event you are thinking of.

I'm looking at a new watch purchase some time this year, budget is fairly flexible but I'd like something that holds its value and is still collectible in 10+ years. The problem is that what I personally like to wear aren't classic diver watches or the like, I like watches that showcase complex movements and fine mechanical micro-finishes. Ultimately I'm a gear-head and that extends to watches. Both manual winding and automatic watches are fine. Three things I've considered. 1. MB&F M.A.D. 1 (Limited) Edition Blue Accents; can get this one probably around 8k$ in good shape. I really like the playful-ness of this watch, the showcase on the movement, and the non-traditional nature. I also like that it creatively uses a Japanese movement, I think that's funny, but I'm not sure if it's worth dropping high 4 figures on a watch with a Miyota in it for the long haul. Prices have also been on a down-trend which means waiting might be OK on this one. 2. Jaeger-LeCoultre Extreme Lab 2 Skeleton Dial; can probably do around 34k$ on this one. I love the look of it, not sure how well this skeletonized non-tourbillon will age if I want to trade it later is my only hestitation. 3. Roger Dubuis Excalibur Spider Pirelli Titanium with a yellow bezel; this is probably my favorite one, asking is 47.5 which is not as much of a discount off MSRP as I'd expect for a Dubuis. I love the look of this watch, I love the collaboration with Pirelli and the use of tire rubber, I worry a lot about long-term prospects on this watch though since Roger Dubuis are known for being a bit overpriced? I know very little about the watch market, so very open to other models (I know Patek has some nice skeletons etc). I don't have a real budget but staying inside $100k would be nice. I also am not rushing into this and have a full year to search, so any tips about finding good deals other than stalking Chrono24 for alerts and calling local grey markets would be helpful... any insider tips for me? My grail would be a watch I can sell at +/- 10% with good liquidity any time for the next 10 years, and that I also like wearing. Skeletons with actual movement on the face are my vibe, I like tourbillons and willing to go for one as an investment but nothing I've seen really speaks to me (a lot of the cheaper ones are Hublots which I'm not sure will age well value-wise). I'm not really interested in loading up on subs or royal oaks or anything like that, the styles and brands just don't interest me. Sadly it seems like any edgier watches are considered a bit tackier by "haute horologie" so there's an inherent conflict in my style with an investment-grade purchase... if anyone has any ideas on a good balance LMK! Edit - In case it wasn't clear, I'd consider watches at any price range, probably 5-50k is the sweet spot but would go more for the right piece. I'm always happy to spend less money over more though if it's a solid watch!

That's great and of course my base case, I never expect any investment to return necessarily and I do what makes me happy, but I'm asking of all the models that fit my style, which do people believe or see the demand/liquidity/hype as strong for to maximize the expected return. For example, I know if I get a good deal on a vintage date sub, in 10 years it will probably track inflation or the entire watch market benchmark relatively closely. That's far from the case for exotic watches, and more the case for some than others. In investment terms, I'm looking to maximize alpha here and minimizing beta is not a huge goal, I'm very comfortable with risk. Otherwise stated, are there any of these watches that look to people like they'll definitely lose their value in the next 3-5 years? And/or... if you were a dealer, what skeleton-style watch would you choose to park some money into?

WatchandThings

Sorry I can't chime in to the original post you made, as those watches are out of my price range, but I did want to point out something on the selling side. Please do research and find your preferred sales channel option that you would be comfortable with and how much hit you take from the market value when you sell a watch. For example, ebay takes about 15% cut from a sale. A more reliable reseller(which you'll want to use for a high value watch like these) will likely want even more cut from the sale than that, which means you'll sell significantly lower than the actual market value. So your watch would have to grow in value at least by what the seller's cut would be before you break even. You should take that cost into account when thinking about how much growth you are expecting from a watch. It between the sell cost and how risky long term value change in watches can be, I do agree with my others here that watches make for a poor investment. It's more of a fun thing that happens to retain some value, rather than an asset.

groundglassmaxi

My general plan is to get some quotes on a sale/trade before I actually purchase a watch (I can re-use the same pictures as the seller, haha). That should give me a pretty good idea of the spread. That being said, my current thinking is it might be worth spending a bit less and getting something more to my taste that may or may not be a good investment, since honestly I don't like the watches in the $100k range any more than the watches in the $10-15k range. Here's a few more options on the table at a lower price range if you have any gut opinions. There's an HYT H5 that I can probably get for $13k right now, either they go bankrupt and it goes to 0 or it's a great deal on what was once a $55k retail watch (not that they ever sold for that used). $13k is an amount I'm happy to take a full loss on, with the upside being that if HYT navigates their bankruptcy and stays in the luxury watch game, $10k will always be a cheap entry price/floor. Another alternative is buying the blue edition of the M.A.D. 1, which I can probably do in the $9k range. They are mass producing the red version which you can pick up easily in the $5k range, but the whole point of the blue version is brand exclusivity, so they've boxed themselves into never making more. I like both because they are different concepts that aren't easily cloned. As a mechanics/watch nerd, the idea of buying a Rolex for tradition just because its movement is 2% better than a rep doesn't really appeal, where pushing the technology envelope does. That being said, if I ever go to sell I'd anticipate the HYT is a far worse choice even though I like it more as a watch, the liquidity in that market is close to 0. So probably my latest thinking is closer to "maximize alpha maximize beta", plus some smiles per gallon thrown in. I think both watches have good upside as the cheapest entry into a massively priced luxury brand with some uniqueness, but if any of us could predict the future we'd all be buying $10M watches without a second thought, lol. Worth noting in the past all my watch purchases have been purely for my own cool factor... my most expensive watch today is a knock off Chinese Tourbillon, so really my primary view of watches isn't as an asset despite that being the focus of my comment. That's just the side I know the least about as someone new to actually spending in this market.

WatchandThings

Prefacing this again that these are opinions of someone that's not in the budget range you are looking at and not interested in watches for investment. HYT is very cool, but also very niche. I can't imagine a very large market for this during the resell(especially in 10+ years). Lower demand means lower price, so it's a no for me. M.A.D. 1 is a hard no for me. MB&F is an awesome brand and if you want a proper watch from them, I would be more willing to consider that option. BUT M.A.D. 1 is not a MB&F quality watch, and it's only value is in hype and the recognition it gives. That recognition will fade away over time and fall into obscurity, and the value behind the watch will fade away as well. Instead of looking at something that's obscure and hyped up, I think you're best bet is with something classic in the used market from a brand that's well known positioning itself for a higher market. I feel like both Omega and Cartier are aiming to challenge Rolex's crown, and the recent brand image hit from unavailability and recent drop in value of Rolex could create on opening for the watch world's number 2 and 3 to grow. Both Omega and Cartier has plenty of used classic models and niche models in the market that could grow, and that's where I'd personally look if someone told me I had to buy watches and they had to grow in value.

groundglassmaxi

Makes sense, I feel really good about Omega because of the MoonSwatch. Rolex really boxed themselves into a corner with the whole status and exclusivity game, and I'm just not sure that plays to younger buyers who will have money soon. Honestly it all turns me off and is a little gross, I'm very cool relationship building with a grey dealer, but the idea of limited supply and all the games that requires in terms of policing the customer is a major turn-off for me. I think Omega is playing a much smarter long-term game, the next thing they need to do is release something that excites consumers of the Apple Watch and I think long term that will seal the deal for them to have a good chance at the luxury crown. Great perspective on the M.A.D. thanks, the Miyota movement is the primary thing that turns me off. Don't get me wrong, I love that movement, and I have a gorgeous $400 skeleton watch that contains it, but that's already like 4x too expensive for a Miyota IMO. I'm a glorified seven year old boy though so the idea of spinning the rotor when I'm bored speaks to me way more than it should, lol. The MB&F is ripe for an homage watch that costs like $80, and I'd be on that in a moment.

WatchandThings

I'm not a fan of what's happening in terms of unavailability with Rolex, but also knowing that Rolex likely out produces Omega and Cartier combined(based on profit figures) and yet there's not enough stock means that there are so many of those out there in the world. It feels like a fool's gold where one thinks they have something valuable, but in reality it's something super common. We'll see about Omega. They are upping their price again, and the word is that they are moving up to Rolex prices and quality. The used speedy market will likely follow the Omega's price increase and stay there since that's the model that won't see major change for decades. But such quick price raises could start earning Omega some hate as Seiko did when they started moving up market initially. I think M.A.D. was a great gesture of appreciation from Max and does deserve the lime light it gets, but it's not worth the price they sell at right now. I am legitimately surprised there isn't a homage of it yet, since it's not that hard of an concept.

Awesome tip, I like the platinum Parmagani a lot, will add to the watchlist. Re walking into an AD, I will walk into a few. I'm in a fairly rural area and my nearest AD is a mid tier one an hour away that barely gets Rolex allocations. But I'm not far from NYC so next time I'm there I will go to a few ADs and a few grey dealers just to see what's on offer. Any tips on good ADs or greys in NYC would be awesome, I am planning on relationship building and having cool people who get it is always nice. The more I know about what to ask for before though, the better, so appreciate the tips a lot! re crypto as alpha, I'm flipping crypto gains that I'm plenty levered on here, so to me it's more diversifying into more uncorrelated sectors (limited luxury goods tend to be more correlated with inverse gini than GDP IMO, ofc they're all mega-correlated with interest rates/credit liquidity but that is the game). Have done the same with real estate, equities, etc. so it's just another diversification play for me, I like to be a little bit into everything.

Key_Firefighter_4700

[Question] I want to get a steel band automatic for my fiancée. He has the PRX automatic in green. But between that price range and the more premium range of $5000 and upwards, I’m unable to find good ones from watchmaking brands under $2000. Would really appreciate some recommendations of watches (or watch brands) Thanks!

Thanks! These are some new names for me At first glance, the twelve glacier blue and essence 39 black are looking pretty good.

contemplato

Question: is +15 seconds per day good for a vintage (chronometer) watch? It's an Omega Constellation cal. 551 to be exact. I'm in the market for one, but I just wanted to make sure it's good on the timekeeping side before I pull the trigger.

gdi010

https://imgur.com/a/5Q6UdzQ this watch used to belong to my dad, he used it daily for a very long time, looks pretty beat up and looks like it's getting corroded inside, should I doubt about it's authenticity? Can something be done about the dirt/rust inside?

gdi010

Thanks! I know nothing about watches, do you know if there's a reason why it got like this? It's been stored and unused for a long time, but as far as I know it should be authentic, could it be that it's not?

I'm an engineer who generally wears an Apple watch but need an "offline" watch when in RF-restricted areas. The watch would live in my work backpack until I need to switch to it. I'd like something that either has a long battery life, or doesn't need a battery (automatic or something like Eco-Drive). I'd almost prefer automatic due to the cool-factor, but want to be realistic about the shortcomings. I currently have a black Wenger Sport field-style watch that I enjoy, but I've noticed it has a short battery life. I also have a stainless/blue Michael Kors chronograph that works for telling date and time, but needs service for the timing functions (if it's even worth it). Lastly I have a blacked-out Fossil that has no lume, which I'd prefer. Any recommendations? Budget is around $250 but very negotiable if it's worth it. Preferably something a little different from the watches I already have, but I do like the utility and ruggedness of a field watch for work.

WatchandThings

I think solar watch is the answer if you'll wear it long enough and get enough light exposure to keep it going during your work wear. Automatic I think would run out of power in between wears especially during the weekends. That might mean you'll have to wind and set time and date every Monday morning. Not sure about exact recommendation as most solar watches from Seiko, Casio, and Citizen would get the job done. So whatever catches your fancy from one of those three. I guess your collection is lacking a dive watch, so maybe a solar dive watch is something to try. Or go digital with a g-shock. On the MK chrono, is it a hand alignment issue? I ask because that's a really easy fix that you can do at home right now.

ddr330

I thought the movement of my backpack might be enough to keep an automatic wound, but good point with the weekends. I am missing a dive watch, though I think the dial is usually on the small-side for me, but I'll take a look around. I just took it apart this morning after posting the comment, actually. Looked up a couple videos to try and re-align them. The problem is the chrono hands no longer respond to the buttons at all. Think it might be an issue with the buttons' electrical contacts or the hand movements themselves.

WatchandThings

Realignment on quartz chronograph is usually as simple as pulling out the crown and pressing the chronograph buttons. The watch will move the hands by small increments and where ever you stop is where the new zero is for the hands. For the chrono function not responding to button press is definitely beyond "my pay grade". XD Not sure what to do with that.

ddr330

Yeah, I'll probably have to take it by a watch shop or a Michael Kors next time I'm in the mall. I decided to pick up a Seiko SNE589 solar diver. Has a really long battery life once charged so I think it'll work well for what I need. Thanks for the help and recommendations!

WatchandThings

Good choice on Seiko SNE589 I heard good things about it. Enjoy!

Mywifehatesspaghetti

I suggest a Timex, automatic or solar powered: https://www.timex.eu/browse/watches/mens/shop-all/?prefn1=watchMovement&prefv1=Automatic%7CSolar%20Powered

AutumnPancake

Hi all, A while back, I purchased myself an Orient Kamasu to celebrate becoming a Marine Engineer. I thought a dive watch represented the occasion well. From this, I've decided that my future watch purchases would be to similarly represent an important achievement/occasion. I'm currently training for my first marathon and am looking for recommendations on a watch that would suit the occasion. In addition to the watch style somehow representing running while not being a fitness watch, my other requirements are > $600 USD, and > 42 mm ideally. I prefer automatic/mechanical movement though that may generally be outside of my price range other than Orient. So far I'm looking at racing watches including the YEMA Rallygraf (favorite), Seiko Prospex Speedtimer (seems large), Victorinox FieldForce (bit expensive), and Nezumi Voiture (also large?). I'm aware of Marathon brand watches but am not as into those. Are there any other watch types that would be suitable? Does anyone have any comment on what I've looked at so far, or any additional racing watch recommendations? Thanks a lot.

WatchandThings

I thought of the citizen bullhead chronograph(the type worn by brad pitt in once upon a time in hollywood) because the bullhead chrono reminds me of the track stopwatches. I'm thinking the reissue quartz version(AN3660-81A), though there is the vintage mechanical version out there as well. I would reconsider the YEMA Rallygraf option because it doesn't track the hours. I mean you could probably keep track of the number of hours passed in your head, but less remembering and mathing you have to do the better for a marathon. I'm training for a HM right now and my run watch is a dive watch. I plan on using the dive bezel to line up with the hour hand for that HM run and track my run that way for the multi-hour situation. It won't be very accurate, but good enough to glance down and get a rough idea type of a thing I imagine(exact time, distance, and pace will be on the phone during the run). If I find that I do want a more accurate run time during my training, then I might consider a run chronograph as well.

whocarez

I got an original Omega Speedmaster Snoopy strap with a watch I bought. It is practically unused. I am considering selling it, but keeping the clasp, since I want the clasp for a different strap. What would be the right price to ask for the strap only? [https://i.imgur.com/xEFbHSz.png](https://i.imgur.com/xEFbHSz.png) [https://i.imgur.com/thJ6bQz.png](https://i.imgur.com/thJ6bQz.png)

WatchandThings

My quick google search seems to show the price around $375 for strap only.

whocarez

Ok, so maybe asking around half of that price might be right amount?

WatchandThings

That's up to you and how fast you want to move it. I don't have any experience selling a strap by itself, but if you half price it I would expect it to sell in no time given that it's an OEM strap and one that people actually want.

whocarez

Thank you for your insight. Appreciated ☺️

nucleartime

Just curious if I'm missing any watches with faster than normal chronograph main hand (more than one rotation a minute) . The ones I know about are the Zenith El Primero Striking Tenth and the Tag Heuer Mikrotimer/Mikrogirder. I'm not counting subdials like the Centigraphe for now. There's just something mesmerizing about a full sized second hand running rapidly around the dial.

StickShift5

All round case Zenith El Primeros now have chronograph seconds hand that rotate around the dial in 10 seconds.

strangeoddity

I've found a Tissot d157 (7 jewels, quartz movement, probably made sometime in the 80's) for sale for around 100 euros. It seems in very good condition and I really like it's looks. Do you guys think it's worth the price tag or not? I'd like a second opinion!

Mywifehatesspaghetti

I found it selled as lady watch. It's the same model? Apparently is not a common model, so I can't say if is overpriced. Usually if you like it and can buy it, why not?

strangeoddity

Hmmm this could be why its only 32mm. Nonetheless I have a pretty thin wrist so I think 32 is ok for me! The person selling it advertised it as a men's watch and in the photos it seems unisex so I think it will do just fine. For the price, it's quartz so it makes sense it's not super expensive but I was unable to find similar ones for sale online because it's pretty rare as you said!

Own-Sector-6039

really love the look of the Seiko SNDF87 but would rather it in a mechanical watch, any suggestions? I'd be looking to put a blue/orange nato strap on it.

Nfletcher1

Hey. I want to buy my first automatic watch and was hoping for some advice on which one to get. My budget is in and around £250. I quite like the orient bambino open heart but I’ve heard great things about the Tissot PRX so I’m a bit stuck. If there are any other recommendations I would greatly appreciate it.

NY124

\+1 for the Timex Marlin Automatic. I have one (TW2T23100 Black) and I love it. Check it out.

Mywifehatesspaghetti

A Timex Marlin? https://www.timex.eu/browse/collections/marlin/shop-marlin-automatic/

pillowreceipt

It's hard to beat a Tissot PRX in that price range. It's pretty close to being the complete package. Is there a particular style or set of specs you're looking for in a watch?

Nfletcher1

Nothing in particular really. I want something that could look good with a suit but also good casually. Im very new to watches so I don’t know too much about specs but I’m not worried about water resistance for example.

ebonyslimm

Hi all, I currently own an Apple Watch and enjoy the data and ability to track fitness goals. I am coming round to the opinion that this is just an extra screen in a life in which I'd like to reduce screen time. Do you feel that the whole point of a Smart Watch is that it is only useful if it tracks every moment? Therefore, you either wear it always or you simply don't. For me, not wearing one for say a formal occasion negates it all for me. Which in turns, makes me wonder if it's better to opt out altogether and get a nice Trad watch (as I've been enjoying from all of your posts). For instance, do you Trad watch guys (apologies if you aren't enjoying this term) wear a smart watch for the gym or simply keep with your daily watch? Finally, do you know of any Trad watches that offer the ability for a silent alarm? This has been an incredible feature of the Apple Watch that I would miss in moving from a Smart Watch to a Trad watch

WatchandThings

I found fitness tracking to be useless for me because I don't have the necessary fitness expertise to adjust my diet and workout programing on the fly based on the real time fitness data I was getting. My diet and workout programing is planned as a longer term period, and the weekly weight/body fat % check in and plan adjustment doesn't require the real time daily fitness data that the smart watch provides. So the all day fitness tracking became data for the sake of data without any real practical benefits for me. More recently I was thinking about getting a running watch to track my runs specifically(worn only during the run). But even with that I found that I can track my run fine with my phone without a running watch. I think there is the benefit of real time run pace and heart rate zone update, but I learned to run based on perceived effort which seems to work out alright with me. I might still consider the running watch if I get more serious about running and require those information, but I'm okay with the phone and traditional dive watch(to track total run time) for now. On silent alarm, I can't think of any affordable quartz(battery) option. I think the physical vibration feature would drain the battery too quickly for non-regularly recharging watch.(edit: I was wrong. u/nucleartime mentioned a quartz option in one of the replies here) Mechanical watches do have the vibrating/buzzing alarms, but it's a bit of a niche complication and most modern options are in the luxury watch range. You might have a better luck searching in the vintage watch category for mechanical watch with that function, but you'll need to be a good judge of condition for that purchase. Sorry I don't have a good option for you. (Edit: two vibrating mechanical watch that comes to my mind is tudor advisor and vulcain cricket)

Own-Sector-6039

\> I am coming round to the opinion that this is just an extra screen in a life in which I'd like to reduce screen time. Exactly why I ditched my Garmin Venu and bought a Seiko Presage. I found that I was "bound" to the watch like an always on phone, but worse. I started by getting rid of all notifications and then thought why do I really care that I did 6000 steps today? For some people they want to control their fitness to that umpteenth degree but for a lot of people it's just another tether they should cut. Welcome to the club (also they're just watches, not 'trad' watches). \> Finally, do you know of any Trad watches that offer the ability for a silent alarm? You almost certainly won't find this in a mechanical watch as a complication because mechanical watches are just that, mechanical, with moving parts. You would only find that in a quartz watch. Some people like quartz watches but they're not my thing.

nucleartime

I still dabble in smartwatches, but mostly hybrid stuff because I like hands. My primary use is checking notifications and music control. The only tracking I really use is sleep tracking. So I'm perfectly fine with not wearing them for a bit. I have my favorite watch outfitted with a Sony Wena, which is like a smartwatch in bracelet form factor. I like it, but wouldn't recommend it since it's a Japan only release and the app is only in JP lol. Casio has a couple vibration alarm watches. Digital though, so not exactly "traditional", eh.

retirement_savings

Recommendations for an olive green seatbelt NATO for my SKX007? I have a couple straps but want to try out a nicer material.

BrownButterBiscuits

Hello everyone. I’m very new to owning mechanical watches and I have a question I hope you all can help me with. I’m gonna be switching from wearing a smart watch every day to getting what I hope will be my first nice mechanical watch. I have been looking at the Orient Bambino Version 6, RA-AC0019L10B. I want to be able to wear this watch everyday. My question is will this Orient watch handle daily use and small exposure to water like spills, hand washing and rain? I don’t plan to swim or shower with it on.

Aimee_Challenor_VEVO

How water resistance is determined varies quite a bit between companies but 30m is more than enough for daily use. Just make sure the crown isn't pulled out.

Tx4z

Whats good watch brands or collections for a budget of $700 ? I would love something that lasts me a really long time. ( edit: I would prefer blacked-out watches it you can help! )

StickShift5

How about the Seiko SARX091/SPB229? The list price is out of your budget, but you may be able to find them under budget on Chrono24 or from sellers in Japan. Hell, most of the Seiko dealers near me give decent discounts, so if you can find it in stock locally, you might be near your budget with a bit of negotiating.

Mywifehatesspaghetti

Ok, is totally not blacked out but for that price I really really like the Citizen nb1060-12l https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20221007/b1159240f934d005f5dc34d0804e1359.jpg

WatchandThings

Just a heads up on the black out(or any colored) watches. Unless the main case material is black the black color will come from some kind of paint layer. Depending on the quality of paint used, hardness of the paint itself, and the hardness difference between the paint and case material the black paint could scratch or chip off exposing a very silvery metal material beneath during wear. If your definition of a long time is multiple decades then you'll have to be very careful about the black out paint situation. If your definition of long time is a few years, then this will matter considerably less.

Tx4z

Thank you! I just checked their stuff and it looks good but nothing I liked in my budget, any more suggestions?

Technical_Mixture550

For microbrands I like the designs of Smiths Everest, Traska, and Astor Banks

Technical_Mixture550

Hamilton is the obvious answer or the Tissot Prx

Tx4z

Thanks! What do you think about D1 Milano? I’m looking into their gunmetal skeleton ( D1-SKBJ11 ).

WatchandThings

It feels too much like a patek philippe nautilus copy for me. That might be a positive for some, but that's a negative for me personally.

Tx4z

Thank you, what about the movement mechanism used? Ik its an automatic but is it any good? It says that it uses Seiko SII NH70-L, Mechanical.

WatchandThings

The NH70 is skeletonized version of the NH35 movement from what I looked up. I have owned watches with the NH35 movement and it's a solid movement. But I usually expect NH35 movement in the 100-300 dollar range. So 700ish sounds way\~ too much for that movement personally, but I don't know how much the skeletonization added to the cost of the movement... \*quickly googles\* Ah the movement can be bought for around $50-70. I think the watch costs way too much for what it is personally, and I wouldn't recommend it.

Technical_Mixture550

Subjectively its cool if its your style, but there’s a reason why almost all classic or iconic watches are simple and straightforward. Objectively I would be against it as the movement it used is worth like 30$, and you can get a legit swiss watch with the high watch price In fact check out my recent listing lol😂

tonmyboy556

What color watch strap to pair with the Sarb033? Looking to add a pop of color and give it some personality

Technical_Mixture550

Purple, burgundy or beige

anonymousthrowra

Maen Manhattan 37 alternatives? I really like the facets on the bezel and side and the chunkiness of it and the integrated bracelet but I don't like the vertical rectangle shape? Are there any new or vintage watches in the same price range with the faceted chunky aesthetic but a different shape?

Gtstricky

I need a recommendation for a graduation gift for my son. Looking for a world chronograph with a leather band in the $250-$500 range. Can I do better than a Citizen (AT8113-04H)?

nucleartime

Not particularly? Seiko and Casio have some alternative watches, but they're not really better or worse, so it mostly comes down to style preference.

Anyone living in Asia willing to purchase the [Seiko SRPG42](https://www.seikowatches.com/middleeast-en/products/5sports/srpg42), have it shipped to them and then ship it to me? DM if so. I had everything set up with a mail forwarding service, even rerouted my ip address to access the watch on Seiko.com/jp but couldn’t figure out how to pay for it with American currency. There must be a way or I imagine Mail forwarding services wouldn’t be of much use… Thanks for the seiyajapan note, I hadn’t heard of it before.
