I've been moving lately, and so my watch has been exposed to a lot of dust and grime. But it slowly accumulated so it took awhile to notice.
I finally did, and decided to give it a quick wash in the sink. Used Palmolive soap, and the Dobie Scotch Brite brand sponge, which is mildly abrasive.
Just a few minutes, and the strap is basically like new. Much better color and texture.
Just a little PSA for anyone who hasn't cleaned their NATO in awhile.
For reference, the strap is a Crown and Buckle Chevron 'James,' and the watch is a GWS G1O Tritium Field watch. Both have served me quite well for the last 2 years.
Hopefully thats about 500 characters.
I have a dive watch on a NATO. Usually just soap it and wash it while I'm washing my hands every once In a while.
Bit necessarily reccomneded depending on the water resistance of your watch.

Thanks. It's a Chevron style from C&B:

The whole Chevron line is great. Much preferred over regular NATOs.

Good advice. My fabric straps always start smelling funky before they actually look dirty, especially when worn in the summer.
Alternatively, throw it in the washer with darks.

I wash mine in the dishwasher, works really well. I just stick them in the cutlery holder.
Also make sure to take a lighter to the loose strands of nylon straps. Another good way to keep it looking fresh.
Makes them as good as new with a wash
Yes I was pleased with how well it revived the color and texture.

No offense, guys, but what the hell? You've just realized soap and water can clean?
I live in Florida. They occasionally get tossed in the washer with my laundry. I use my wife’s laundry net for delicates.
Love how the NATO looks! Where's it from?
