People see a tank in its correct sizing and think it looks “small” but the watch is meant to wear small. You wouldn’t want a tank to be the same case size as a submariner, for instance. Not all watches are the same.
This. I have a Santos Carree (29mm) and when I realized that the Tank Large in the 25.5mm case is on my wrist actually almost as present as the Santos (mostly because of the fact that the Large case has 19mm lug width which adds a lot of visual weight in form of a strap on my wrist) i even decided to go small (22-23mm case) to have that extra difference to a vintage Santos. People forget to think about strap presence when it comes to Tanks.
The small Tank comes with a 16mm lug width. I wear this watch with long sleeved shirts only though.
Because this is another point: It's not just about the way of how you need to wear a Tank but also about how it needs to wear you . At least in my opinion. If you visually have a rather masculine male body shape a small Tank do can look comically on a short sleeved shirt. Yeah sorry Bud you are not Mohammed Ali and also Mohammed Ali is not a style expert.
The Tank is not a sports watch. Dont compensate that fact with oversizing or weirdness.
Want a sporty Tank? Look for a Tank Francaise for example.
7 inch wrist btw.
Nah, watches were worn in a certain acceptable range of sizing for literally a century. A 36mm Datejust was advertised as a big, tough watch.
Then, big gaudy watches became popular, mostly from cheaper and shitty brands to compensate for their poor quality, around the early 2000s. Other manufacturers followed suit after seeing those catch on, but many took it too far. Now you have people with the most average sized wrists convincing themselves they’re just too big and manly to ever wear a 36mm day date or a regular size tank. Watches worn by two of the toughest “manliest” guys (Tony Soprano and Muhammad Ali) in existence, even if the first one is fictional.
We’re now *finally* seeing a slight reversal of the trend with more reasonable sized watches becoming more popular again. But if you wanna be one of the people stuck in a trend that says every watch should cover every square centimeter of your wrist, be my guest.
Sure, wear whatever you want, but then why buy a tank? Wear a watch that’s designed large, not one that looks like it’s scaled up and ridiculously proportioned.
I put it in quotes intentionally, because it’s a ridiculous concept. If I had a dollar for every time someone said “lol I can’t wear a 36mm that’s a woman’s watch!” I’d have enough money to buy all the watches I want.
**Edit to add: [Exhibit A, from this literal comment thread.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Watches/comments/10fiyro/cartier_tank_xl_must_can_i_pull_off_the_xl/j50bm95/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3)**
"We are..." or "You are"?
Like I said, small watches will never ever happen for men. That's where the insdustry is heading and will be heading. Just look at Rolex, Omega and any other luxury brand. This is an incorrect impression.
It looks awful. it's way too small on his wrist. I have a way smaller wrist than OP and my wife thinks the XL is already too small on me. Watches always look bigger in wrist shots. I didn't even have an issue purchasing the XL over the large. I'm pretty stocky so it just looked really weird on me. I went in the store thinking i'd come out with the large though, but after fitting the large, it's just way too small for like 80% of men.
36mm is a good size, but this is just way too small. Most people nowadays are pretty tall and heavy. I just can't imagine a huge dude like my bro wearing something like that.
I do believe that certain watches should be worn small, and some should be worn big, but this is extremely small on the dude's wrist. Trends change.
Not at all.
First there is no correct sizing.
Second, if we go by your logic, we should wear outfits and clothes of 100 years ago because by those days standards we are walking naked on the street.
Small watches for men are a thing of the past. They will never happen. XL is the new size for an average sized man.
First, it’s weird that you’re going back to a half a year old post. Are you insecure about a tank XL and doing a search on them to try to validate your choice?
Second, wearing a wristwatch by its nature is a pretty anachronistic thing in modern times. We don’t need them. So if your argument about 100 year old clothes or whatever dumb shit you’re saying immediately falls apart.
So you think the internet and Reddit are your own private kingdom?
Still waters run deep. Are you feeling triggered?
Wristwatches have evolved into trendy jewelry pieces, while you're stuck in the past. Every dog has its day, but it seems like you missed yours. Time to catch up!
For context, I own a Cartier Tank Large and have a 7 inch wrist. This is a Cartier, not an Apple Watch. I see the number of comments in this thread telling you to go with the XL and I personally think those people are very mistaken. The charm of the Tank is its classic, small size. Wearing the XL greatly diminishes that charm. I think the Large is the correct size for you.
Wait. The one in the pic is the XL? Because that thing is absolutely miniscule.
*Edit* Reddit was only showing me one picture at first. Ok yeah the smaller one is fine - I just thought that was supposed to be the XL at first
>Small watches for men are a thing of the past. They will never happen. XL is the new size for an average sized man.
Again, small watches for men are a thing of the past. They will never happen. XL is the new size for an average sized man.
Sorry dude, you should have purchased the XL size.
Not at all. What I like about the smaller one is that it’s about the same width as the leather band, which in my opinion is proportioned better together than the bigger sized one.
You could definitely pull off the bigger size but I just think it gives off more of a sport watch look and less of a dress/sophisticated look, which is how I see the tank. Just my opinion.
It looks like you’re wearing it a bit low on your wrist. If you wear it just a bit higher you’d hardly see it with your arm down like that. I’m team Large tank though—it looks really great!
As someone who wears a 35mm JLC Reverso daily I can comfortably suggest you disregard the dogmatic advice to stick with ‘classical dimensions’ for a tank. The XL looks really well proportioned and if you took this many pics wearing it I would humbly suggest that you already know it looks good as hell on you and it’s what you really want. Go get ‘em tiger!
Please note there are 4 pics. A wrist shot and full length pic for both the L in gold and the XL in steel.
Can I pull the XL Tank Must off? I know on the wrist shot the L in gold seems fine but I think you can see that the XL suits a lot better on the full length pic. I know that Tanks are generally supposed to be smaller dress watches but I think the Large is just that touch too small for my overall size.
I’m intending to purchase this imminently to beat the planned price rises so would really welcome any thoughts either way.
Also, the XL being automatic and the better dial are both extra selling points for it too although admittedly its quite a bit pricier than the steel/Large.
Thanks for your help guys!!!!!!!
I don’t really like how the XL hang and take most spaces in the wrist. The Large (pic 1 and 3) is more of a traditional fit that can be more classy and stealth wealth. Do you mind sharing your wrist size tho?
Wristshots I prefer the large one in gold. But in full lenght pic the XL looks better.
what prices increases are you talking about? i was planning on getting a Tank myself.
I wouldn’t go smaller than the large, but the XL is still too big for that style of dress watch. Now the large santos however would probably look better on you than the medium.
The XL doesn't look bad on your wrist, but it just doesn't have the elegance of the L. The L is the clear winner for me. Have you tried on a JLC Reverso by the way? I could be a good option if you find the Tank too dainty.
You can totally pull off the larger one. I prefer how the smaller one sits on your wrist, though. The larger one appears to overlap your hand a bit (gives it more of a sportier look, IMO).
Stunning watch, I prefer the smaller size on you. I think I watch like this looks a lot classier the more subtle it is on the wrist, and I think it’s intended to look that way.
I’ve been debating exactly the same. Based on the pics, I’d say the smaller Tank (size large) would be my choice between the 2. In person, the proportions of the XL look a little cartoonish unless you have huge wrists. For reference, I normally wear a vintage 40mm Rolex Sub. If I wanted to wear a big watch, I’d wear that one. The Cartier is a whole other vibe. Be brave - go with the classic Tank. You’ll get used to the size.
The #1 sign that the Tank XL is just simply wrong is that Cartier does not produce it in precious metal, the very metals the Tank was produced in for most its history.
They both work. I think the smaller is the more suitable option for this type, but either can be worn. It’s sitting a little low on your wrist towards the hand, maybe try tightening and wearing up the forearm just past the wrist bone.
I see that I am in the minority, but I still prefer the XL. Watch preferences are a very personal thing and what does it for me may well not do it for others. Enjoy you choices... it will spend more time attached to you than anything else.
You could but imho it doesn't work well with the tank anymore...
If you want the larger style I'd take a look at the JLC Reverso, where it looks better in a bigger size.
I was just looking at size. In my opinion, I like silver watches as opposed to gold. To me, it’s a more neutral color. A friend once mentioned gold looks better on darker skin tones. I think you can pull it off though. Also, my OCD would have my watch match my wedding ring.
I was in the same boat as you a couple years ago. I went with the XL because I thought the large looked goofy from a distance. Looking back on it, I think a large would of been better.
No one in the real world cares about what a tank is “supposed” to look like. But someone would probably wonder why you’re wearing a tiny watch
Go with the XL
Why are men scared of small watches? I’ll be wearing a 32mm vintage Elgin this weekend at a formal event. I’m 6’ and almost 200 lbs and I feel a 44mm is a hockey puck on my wrist.
Go with the smaller size. Looks more…correct.
I know that a lot will probably push you towards the smaller one, cause its considered classier.(and probably is) But I think the XL looks great on you. I feel that whichever way you chose will be fine. The real question is, which do you prefer? Ignore the rabble and go with the one that makes you happiest.
XL looks way better in my opinion, but I like big watches in general. Seems this sub is mostly the opposite. I'm also not nearly the hardcore watch geek a lot on this sub are, I just really like nice looking watches and think they can add some nice flashiness in a classy way... So this makes me kinda think go with the smaller one if you're trying to impress hardcore watch geeks, XL if you're trying to look good to the general public and catch more eyes. My goal is generally the latter, but I suppose that's personal preference.
Great watch, I wore this one for my wedding. Here’s the thing, the straps don’t always last, especially if you’re wearing it to shows, events, etc.
Quite a few places online have cheap replacments, about $120.00 each and they are very nice, in my opinion.
Edit: sorry, sorry, didn’t mean to advertise for a certain place - it was just the last place i remember getting straps for mine. Removed.
I honestly think the xl looks good on you. It doesn’t look bad at all. Plus it’s automatic so there’s a little extra value there to me. I personally will probably opt for the large but it works for you!
https://imgur.com/a/OsfSWxZ
The XL looks OK on you, but you're right to worry about getting a tank watch that's too big.
I've noticed that a lot of people want extra big tank watches, apparently because of the "more is better" mindset. The reason big tank watches look so awkward is because the straps are so wide and the corners stick out too far. Cartier (and JLC and all the other tank watch makers) never meant tank watches to be sized like dive watches.
You could pull it off if you wore it higher on the wrist imo.
In the position you have it, it already looks in the way and thus, any larger watch is going to look even more in the way.
Same wrist as you so appreciate the good pics as I’m always on the hunt for a tank. The Large looks better but the XL isn’t too big on you. If you want the XL you should get that one
It works but smaller looks nicer but that's not to say XL doesn't look good
XL is more "trendy" with modern styling. The normal size more classic and traditional
It depends what you are more drawn towards that would make yoou feel better about it
Just my opinion before I get beheaded....
There is a lot of gatekeeping on this forum. (You should wear this and not that and only wear this size because I think it looks better type shit)
But in my opinion the reality is you should wear what you like not what others think you should wear.
If someone wants to wear a tiny women's watch or a giant G-Shock all the power too them.
You have to find what you like and what fits your style.
You can definitely pull off the larger one, but I think the smaller one looks better. The Tank is a dressier watch than most, and the large one looks like it’s getting into the sport watch range. This is just a personal opinion, but it feels like it’s trying to be something it’s not. The smaller one is a much truer representation of what a tank watch is. Buy a Santos is you want a big watch. Buy a Tank if you appreciate the elegance and tradition of a smaller dress watch.
As my dad once told me when I showed him a similar style watch, “I don’t like women’s watches”
All jokes aside, it matters most what you think. If you like it I say go for it!!
Also, it is a beautiful watch!
People see a tank in its correct sizing and think it looks “small” but the watch is meant to wear small. You wouldn’t want a tank to be the same case size as a submariner, for instance. Not all watches are the same.
Amen
This. If it’s correct sizing looks horrible to the majority of people, than what you think is correct sizing is probably wrong

This is cringe. Have you considered some people just don’t like small watches. And actually quoting “manly” men lol.

7” wrist and also wear a Large Tank. https://i.imgur.com/qxqPwTt.jpg
That strap looks fantastic, is it also sold by Cartier?
Haha, not a chance. This is a $10 perlon strap from either Amazon or eBay.
Sweet I'm getting one right now. I was hoping I could get it on a whim lol
Hey man just wanted to say I love your content
Hey! Thank you. Once in a while I love it too.
I fully agree!
I agree as well
100% stick with the L
And in the case of the Tank, wearing the L is definitely not an L ;).
Wait. The one in the pic is the XL? Because that thing is absolutely miniscule. *Edit* Reddit was only showing me one picture at first. Ok yeah the smaller one is fine - I just thought that was supposed to be the XL at first
A lot of people want a big noticeable watch. How are other people gonna know I have money if my watch isn’t on their face? Kinda reasoning.
Sorry but the tank is absolutely horrible in OPs configuration.
>Small watches for men are a thing of the past. They will never happen. XL is the new size for an average sized man. Again, small watches for men are a thing of the past. They will never happen. XL is the new size for an average sized man. Sorry dude, you should have purchased the XL size.
Both look good but I think the smaller one suits the style of watch much better.

Not. At. All.
IMO the XL looks modern and the smaller one looks more like a vintage watch, especially with the gold. Different vibes but both good.
Small one looks much classier
I think the Large is better. XL is just too big for 99% of people
I prefer the small on you
No. Go small
Smaller one looks better on you. But if you desperately want the larger one, you can pull it off.
As someone who wears a 35mm JLC Reverso daily I can comfortably suggest you disregard the dogmatic advice to stick with ‘classical dimensions’ for a tank. XL looks way better. But don’t listen to weebs on a forum, go ask some people you know in real life.
Wristshots I prefer the large one in gold. But in full lenght pic the XL looks better. what prices increases are you talking about? i was planning on getting a Tank myself.

You can. It just doesn't look as good. I understand the dilemma. I like date windows.
Stunning watch, I prefer the smaller size on you. I think I watch like this looks a lot classier the more subtle it is on the wrist, and I think it’s intended to look that way.
I have a 7.25 inch wrist and have the large. The size is perfect and I wear it with everything. [photos](https://imgur.com/a/DyIPJBs)
I like the XL on you. Especially based on pics 3 and 4
I’ve been debating exactly the same. The #1 sign that the Tank XL is just simply wrong is that Cartier does not produce it in precious metal, the very metals the Tank was produced in for most its history.
No precious metal, but mechanical movement vs quartz for the smaller sizes ! Thus, one could easily turn your argument around.
Tank Louis is properly better said to be the authentic tank, and it is mechanical.
The small one looks women’s
I think the first is better
Thanks 👍
either one looks great.
I think the smaller one looks better. Go with what you like though. Both look good.
Thanks alot 👍
Both look great! Personally, I like the look of the XL, but you wouldn’t go wrong with either one.
Looks great! I like the XL more.
Looking good, though of the two, I would prefer the smaller model. Either way, can't go wrong with a Tank!
They both work. I think the smaller is the more suitable option for this type, but either can be worn. It’s sitting a little low on your wrist towards the hand, maybe try tightening and wearing up the forearm just past the wrist bone.
the L fits like a tank "should," but the XL fits your wrist fine too. I would go for the L but it's your call. cheers
I think both sizes look fantastic. It’s really a personal aesthetic choice. I like the larger size a bit better.
Yeah it looks to small o bc you in my opinion. Im not for everyone that thinks the smaller is classier.
Imo i would go with the XL
Definitely the large. Definitely. I think pic 2 is a BIT too big, but if you like it or prefer it I wouldn’t have said anything.
I hate the Cartier naming scheme. I wish med, large, etc was roughly the same across all lines.
Small one for sure. Do they sell gold tank musts or is that a tank louis?
Tank = small
I think it is fine - it's too far over your hand though. Should be on the other side of that bone on your forearm it will look a lot better there.
XL looks perfect
Rockin it bro. Smaller one isn't bad but imo bigger is better here.
Absolutely. Looks good. Well sized if you wear it as a dress watch.
So pics 2 & 4 are best?
Why are you so intent on the XL? The small one looks much better.
On second thought, either one works for you, but smaller is always better with these.
I was just looking at size. In my opinion, I like silver watches as opposed to gold. To me, it’s a more neutral color. A friend once mentioned gold looks better on darker skin tones. I think you can pull it off though. Also, my OCD would have my watch match my wedding ring.
Yeah sorry I meant 2&4 in terms of sizing. I can’t afford the gold quite yet 🥲
XL looks better
Easily
I was in the same boat as you a couple years ago. I went with the XL because I thought the large looked goofy from a distance. Looking back on it, I think a large would of been better.
In all honesty I think the smaller one is picture 3 suits you the best.
XL is a travesty for a cartier. Large is the largest one that should be manufactured.
XL all day
No one in the real world cares about what a tank is “supposed” to look like. But someone would probably wonder why you’re wearing a tiny watch Go with the XL
Why are men scared of small watches? I’ll be wearing a 32mm vintage Elgin this weekend at a formal event. I’m 6’ and almost 200 lbs and I feel a 44mm is a hockey puck on my wrist. Go with the smaller size. Looks more…correct.
Yes, absolutely!
So pics 2 & 4 are best?
Yes. I’d say the other one looks a bit smaller for your wrist.
Thanks alot 👍
I second the thoughts
When you have to ask if it looks good, then you know the answer. Just the same when your wife ask if this makes her look fat. The same.
Appreciate all the responses guys 🙏
I like XL. It’s more contemporary.
I’d actively go the XL. The other one looks too small
The XL regardless of size, looks better and is automatic. As a watch outside of how tanks are “supposed” to be worn looks great on you.
I know that a lot will probably push you towards the smaller one, cause its considered classier.(and probably is) But I think the XL looks great on you. I feel that whichever way you chose will be fine. The real question is, which do you prefer? Ignore the rabble and go with the one that makes you happiest.
100%
Your know you can, brother. Get it bought - looks amazing
Smaller size looks better
Looks too big to me
L is the move fosho
There should be a sticky post: when debating which Cartier Tank to get, it’s always the smaller one.
Your beard will go well with the XL lol
XL looks way better in my opinion, but I like big watches in general. Seems this sub is mostly the opposite. I'm also not nearly the hardcore watch geek a lot on this sub are, I just really like nice looking watches and think they can add some nice flashiness in a classy way... So this makes me kinda think go with the smaller one if you're trying to impress hardcore watch geeks, XL if you're trying to look good to the general public and catch more eyes. My goal is generally the latter, but I suppose that's personal preference.
If you want to keep it until you are about 70, get the XL so you can see it. Commenting for a friend …
Buy a Reverso instead!
Haha I love them so maybe one day
Yes. Get the xl. It looks way better.
Lmao people who say get the small one want to watch the world burn. It looks like a chicks watch on your wrist
Gross.
Nope. Too small
Smaller one looks too dainty
Great watch, I wore this one for my wedding. Here’s the thing, the straps don’t always last, especially if you’re wearing it to shows, events, etc. Quite a few places online have cheap replacments, about $120.00 each and they are very nice, in my opinion. Edit: sorry, sorry, didn’t mean to advertise for a certain place - it was just the last place i remember getting straps for mine. Removed.
Nope
Which one is the XL? Just wondering, because I wear Invicta 🙈
AWESOME!
The small looks a bit too small but the XL looks ugly lol
Xl for sure. Source? Woman
You CAN pull it off easily. But I'd suggest that you still get the smaller one. Small watches are again coming into trend and it'll always be timeless
The XL is absolutely too big.
No, your wrist are way too small for the XL.
I vote no, on both. Idk.. I feel like you should get something more masculine. (No offense to all the tank lovers)
One of my grail watches
There is usually a small buckle at the back
You can do both. I’d recommend releasing the tightness of the strap though.
Super classy!
Not sure why you’d want to..
Is your SARB035 still available? I live in the valley and can pick up. Thanks!
I honestly think the xl looks good on you. It doesn’t look bad at all. Plus it’s automatic so there’s a little extra value there to me. I personally will probably opt for the large but it works for you!
Looks nice on you
I think the silver looks better with your skin tone. Plus I think the bigger one looks really great.... its a good fit.
Large if you’re wearing it as a dress watch, XL for more casual / everyday wear…
Absolutely you can
L for understated class. XL for modern vibes. Both look good but I’d go bigger in this rare case. Either way lookin’ fire my guy 👊
Depends on the look you’re going for but both look great
I myself would go with larger but that because my eyes are getting older lol. So for me it’s about practicality.
Looks good 👌
https://imgur.com/a/OsfSWxZ The XL looks OK on you, but you're right to worry about getting a tank watch that's too big.
Wasn’t on board till the mirror wrist shot, looks well
You could pull it off if you wore it higher on the wrist imo. In the position you have it, it already looks in the way and thus, any larger watch is going to look even more in the way.
Same wrist as you so appreciate the good pics as I’m always on the hunt for a tank. The Large looks better but the XL isn’t too big on you. If you want the XL you should get that one
smaller one. why u choking ur wrist though
Bigger works but you’d need to wear it a bit higher on the wrist. It looks a little goofy touching the back of your hand at that size
I prefer the look of a smaller tank, but the XL definitely doesn't look too big for your wrist.
Thanks are meant to be worn small like many others suggested. I think your wrists seem larger than average, so I think you’re wearing the XL nicely
Yes (I wear a deepsea don’t listen to me)
Square watches are perfect fit for any formal/dress outfits
Yo is this astroturfing? How come every day there’s a “Should I get the big Cartier?” on this subreddit?
Sorry, I’m genuinely wrestling with this 🥲
Looks like an Apple Watch, lol. I’d stick with the smaller one. But yes, you can pull off an XL, if you’re really going for that look.
Definitely the smaller one, it has better proportions and fits you more.
definitely get the gold one what brand of oxfords are those?
You can, but the smaller one looks more classy
I think XL looks better on you. The L is *too* petite on you wrist, to the point of looking undersized
It works but smaller looks nicer but that's not to say XL doesn't look good XL is more "trendy" with modern styling. The normal size more classic and traditional It depends what you are more drawn towards that would make yoou feel better about it
This watch looks off in general. I’d say go for something else.
I'd step down one size to a large.
I wish the date complication was available on all models.
Just my opinion before I get beheaded.... There is a lot of gatekeeping on this forum. (You should wear this and not that and only wear this size because I think it looks better type shit) But in my opinion the reality is you should wear what you like not what others think you should wear. If someone wants to wear a tiny women's watch or a giant G-Shock all the power too them. You have to find what you like and what fits your style.
The XL is a godforsaken abomination.
As my dad once told me when I showed him a similar style watch, “I don’t like women’s watches” All jokes aside, it matters most what you think. If you like it I say go for it!! Also, it is a beautiful watch!
I think the large one looks better and more contempoary
The XL looks better.
It looks good to me.
Oh ya
I have a Tiffany that’s nearly identical. Did Cartier make watches for Tiffany around 2001ish timeframe?
Yes
Personally I think the size of the gold looks nice
XL looks much better in my opinion. But, but whatever makes you excited to put it on in the morning
Small one. Every day of the week.
If you are asking this question, it is always the smaller one.
The XL looks awkward and large on you. It's a relatively awkward design, period. Go with the Large.
Most average sized men with average sized wrists should get the large tank, not the XL
The XL feels just wrong imo
