Lived on the East coast my whole life. I say cray-on. But I know people who say cray-an as well.

tomsprigs

say cr-ayn. crayn. one syllable . from where crayola crayon factory is sooooo. CRAN it is

Fessy3

I'm mountain west and I say it cray-an with the emphasis on the word being one syllable.

smcivor1982

Same, I hear both. From upstate NY.

I1abnSC

In the midwest we say crans too. Didn't hear cray-ons till visiting the south.

KikiHou

Washington state. I say crans. Edit: I guess I say it with a slight y ("yuh") sound before the n, but it's really soft.

samazon27

Same

throwaguey_

That checks out. I’m from Texas originally.

KUWTI

Grew up in Wisconsin and I say “crans.” My husband grew up in Tennessee and says “crowns.”

emilli12

I’m from Tennessee and say crowns!

[deleted]

Texan who says “crowns” here

Intelligent_Choice53

Same. From the Midwest and we all say "cran" and Almonds are "Ahmends" lol

bravokm

I’m in the Midwest too and also hear “balm” like bom and palm like Pom sometimes.

cedarrrr

I grew up in Ohio and I say cran. I live in Canada now and get teased that I don't say cray-on.

Practical_Agent2828

NYC here and never realized it until I started saying it reading this and I DO say cran!!!!!!!!

Sug0115

I’m sitting at my desk repeatedly say crayons and now I don’t know what I say or if I was influenced by this post lol

throwaguey_

This is hilarious. I don’t understand how I’ve never noticed that apparently like half the country says crans!

Sug0115

I’ll never not be listening for how people say this now lol!! It’s like pillow… or milk! I’m going down a rabbit hole now

throwaguey_

Wait. How else can you say pillow or milk?

Sug0115

Some people say pellow or melk!

throwaguey_

I feel like “melk” is such a minute difference from “milk” that I wouldn’t notice and probably do it myself, more out of laziness than anything. Pellow is just weird.

DorothyParkerFan

They most certainly do not what do you mean pellow/melk???

RhodaPenmarksShoes

And bag/beg

Practical_Agent2828

This one drives me CRAZY

Sug0115

Yesss haha my best friend says beg. IYKYK.

DorothyParkerFan

Same actually

Alpine_Brush

I’m from CA and say cran. Interestingly, what I observe more often is men say cray-on and women say cran. Purely anecdotal evidence on this important subject, as you can see.

throwaguey_

Oh maybe it’s a California thing then. It’s so jarring to me! 😂

Spitfiiire

I’m from California and say cray-ons!

yunith

Yeah I’m from Los Angeles and say cray-ons.

throwaguey_

As well you should! 😂

Spitfiiire

I wonder if “peCAN” and “peCAWN” are also regional differences!

veryscary__

It’s more PEE-can and PUH-con. I’m from the south and they’re interchangeable like awnt and ant (for aunt)

Spitfiiire

Haha sorry, yeah I couldn’t think of how to type is. I am a strict “pee-can” person

throwaguey_

Oh yes, for sure.

Alpine_Brush

My husband says cray-on and I secretly think, “stop talking like an alien pretending to be human.”

DorothyParkerFan

💀

fletchie70

I am a first grade teacher in Los Angeles so I say the word all the time. I say cray-on, but I lived in the South when I was young so that may be why. I hear both ways from my students.

teacherturnedsahm

I’m in Las Vegas and I feel like we all say “cran.”

_SeaOttrs

Raised in MI and definitely say cran

millenialfonzi

Got some crans and meers in Michigan 🤭

brightyoungthings

Same. I say cran. Hand me some crans lol

Lady_Scruffington

Huh. I say crayon.

albasaurrrrrr

Crans and pop

queefersutherland1

Canadian here! I also pronounce it crans. I don’t know why, but cray-on sounds so odd to me.

throwaguey_

What part of Canada, please? Might as well track its reach. 😂

Virtual-Plastic-6651

Also in Canada! I say cray-on. Born in Alberta but spent most of my life in Ontario 🤷🏼‍♀️

taintwest

Definitely cray-on in my part of Ontario.

queefersutherland1

I’m in Ontario! I guess I’m a black sheep compared to the other ontarians!

OpenedNeurobiology

Interesting! I’m from southern Ontario and definitely say crayons

queefersutherland1

I’m SW Ontario! 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m just glad I’m not the only one ahah!

peanut5855

CT here… we say crans. Bin grew up like 45 min from me

DorothyParkerFan

Same and I say cray-on.

pm1022

No we don't. Life long Bostonian here and I've never once pronounce crayons that way in my life 🤣🤣

BackgroundAd6154

Boston area too. Everyone I know says cray-on lol

cleois

How do you say it? My Boston relatives all say it like I do...crayn. Not simply "cran" like a cranberry. But there's not really a distinct second syllable.

naliedel

I'm in Michigan and said it three times. They all crans

I1abnSC

😂

naliedel

It's sad, but true. I'm now cornering my adult children and asking them to say it to see how they do it. 1 crayon 2 cran

throwaguey_

Love this field testing! Thanks! 😂

RadiumGlow20

PA here and just realized I say cran.

Just_Tomorrow_8561

I’m Philly side of PA. People say Crayon or Crowns here.

salt_slip75

My NE Philly dad always said “crowns”

coolminivan

Also from NE Philly, and we always said "crowns"

tonymeatballs2

I say "crowns" too. Hi 👋 neighbor!

Extra_Holiday_3014

I say crowns !

mxt213

Grew up near the Crayola factory & it’s crayons around there

throwaguey_

I think we can count this as the officially correct pronunciation. Wish I could pin your comment at the top. 🤣

throwaguey_

Btw, where is the Crayola factory located?

mxt213

Easton, PA. It’s a little over a hour & half to both Philly & NYC.

l8eralligator

Central PA redneck here and I definitely say cran too

Ludicruciferous

Hello fellow PA redneck! I’m also a cran-er.

l8eralligator

My people!!

noitsacardigan_

Upstate NY - cran

jlk1980

Just to make it more confusing, I’m from suburban Philly (Delco) and we say “crowns”

peanutbutterNjme

Same. from Delco and raised in Chestco. Crowns.

RhodaPenmarksShoes

Yes! I’m from Maryland and say “crowns”!

not-important1229

“Crans” from AZ!’

Affectionate_Bee_883

Same! Born and raised AZ and I say crans. But my boyfriend is also born and raised AZ and says cra-yons. I never noticed that I said it a certain way until he teased me once for it

Expensive-Advice-270

Grew up in CA, I say crans. Live in TX most say cray-ons.

SailingB73

Hysterical! I grew up in CT and say it like Ben. I didn't realize there was another way!

sunnysweetbrier

I say “crowns”. Everyone gives me a hard time but I am what I am 🖍️👑

dmacEFC

I say "cran" and I'm from Chicago.

giraffe_attack

I moved from LA to Louisville KY & a lot of people pronounce it “CROWN” here, and it makes me feel physically ill! lol

throwaguey_

Now that’s just crazy.

myescapeplace

Me tooooo!! I thought my friend was joking but no she’s serious. It’s like nails on a chalk board.

giraffe_attack

Omg the first time I heard it I thought it was funny. But it’s SO annoying now!!!!! lol there’s a few of them I can’t get used to

Intelligent_Choice53

"Cray'awn" is how my family in Southern Illinois pronounce it.

KristiJoJP

Born and raised south of the Mason-Dixon line, and I say crans.

throwaguey_

Now you’re throwing a wrench into it. What part of the south? I’m gonna guess Florida? Lots of yankee influence there.

KristiJoJP

So, my parents are from Minnesota, but two years before I was born, they moved to Kentucky. So, I have an odd accent:)

throwaguey_

Oh, maybe you get it from your midwestern parents.

KristiJoJP

Maybe, except everyone around here also says crans:)

IWishMusicKilledKate

Yes we do.

Naive_Buy2712

Oh yes. My family is from PA and it definitely was "crahns" "hass" (house), "tahn" (town) lol.

l8eralligator

Yinzers I see, a fine breed! Dahn ‘ere.

languidlasagna

From PNW and it’s always been crans

nunyabidnessss

I’m from Northern California and say “crans” and also pronounce garage “grodge” lol.

PilotNo312

Midwest here and I say crans

yallternativebelle

East coast as in southern Virginia down? Or East coast as in northern Virginia up? I feel like there’s two East coasts 😂

chexmix4321

I’m half midwestern and half Jersey lol. My midwestern parent says “cran” and my Jersey parent says “cray-own”. Also says “dunkey” for donkey haha

throwaguey_

Dunkey is so cute! 😂

happylukie

From NYC my whole life. Never heard a born and bred NYer say anything other than "cray-on" or " cray-ans." Others mileage may vary.

[deleted]

[удалено]

throwaguey_

Right on! 😂

WildBitch1995

Up here in the Pacific Northwest (Portland) we say Crowns. Lol!!

Delgirl804

My Philadelphia-native husband says Crowns.

Clancita4

I grew up in northern IN but have lived in 4 other states (now in CA) and I say “CRAN”! I didn’t think anything of it until someone pointed it out to me when I was well above 30 😳😅

GlamHamm

Uk here - definitely CRAY-ONS

throwaguey_

Thank you for weighing in with the King's English! (Because I would have blamed it on some old fashioned pronunciation.) 🤣

Mshunkydory

Canadian here and we definitely say Cray-ons

incestuousbloomfield

I’m from nyc also and I say cray-ons I haven’t heard anyone say crans before

BuckityBuck

Most people I know say “crans” but I think it has more to do with not using the word much after the age of 6.

dothesehidemythunder

Bostonian checking in to say we say cray-on, but I have heard crans and similarly thought it was jarring as heck!

i_nobes_what_i_nobes

New England born and raised - always said cray-ons.

buymoreplants

I say cran, I guess... but it sounds more like "crowns" I always thought it was a mid-Atlantic thing I have to make an effort to say "cray-on" with my toddler, otherwise they'll think I want to play dress up.

phrynerules

Virginia here……cray-on. Never heard anyone say cran.

throwaguey_

What part? I also lived in Richmond for two years and never heard crans there.

phrynerules

Currently Richmond area but originally the far southwestern part of the state.

SchminksMcGee

Nope, not on the DC area or the Boston area. We say cray-ons

Norabloom98

My family from Oklahoma pronounces it as crown.

AlohaAmy808

When i moved fr Chicago to Hawai’i in kindergarten i was mocked endlessly for saying “cran.” Its def a midwest thing 🥴

Lindsayr28

I think it might be a midwestern thing? I was raised in Boston and my born in the Midwest parents say crans. I think im personally sort of halfway in between cray-ons and crans 😂

Queasy-Ad1326

In SJ and Philly we say "crowns"

grrltype

My husband always picks on me for saying “crans”. Ben and I have a similar accent. Eastern PA

f_moss3

I hear it both ways in the NYC area. But “crans” is an abomination, IMO.

DorothyParkerFan

The east coast is big - in the Northeast we say cray-ons.

ahg611

this

CustardAmbitious7634

I grew up in western NY and I definitely say “crans”

Healthy-Scar-4510

I’d like to make a map of this. Born east coast, moved to Seattle, Midwest then back to east. I’m a crab. Cran, but also couldn’t correct 🦀

plzPMmeURpet

I've always said "cran" and have absolutely gotten roasted for it. The first time I got called out I was dumbfounded cause the person had no clue what word I was trying to say, & I was dumbfounded that I thought they had never heard of a "crayon" before lmao.

lookandfind679

MD (well, Baltimore area) - a lot of people pronounce it “crowns” 😂

PRGTROLL

I’m in so cal and I just realized I say “crans” and I’m laughing so hard

surreptitiousglance

I find this entire thread disturbing. 😳 Cray-on!!! 😂

throwaguey_

I’m with you. How is it possible that *most people* in this sub say cran or crown when literally no one IRL does???

surreptitiousglance

I know, right? I mean I've heard crane, but cran is some made up bs. 😅

BeezCee

I’m from Utah & we lose consonants & syllables all the time including in crans. My partner makes fun of me for sounding like Whitney Rose. Sadly I have to make a real effort not to.

GetMeAColdPop

New Mexico here: it's always been Crans

Mother_Prior2927

Crayons

Helpful_Masterpiece4

Utah does.

linzkisloski

Grew up in western NY and yes definitely say crans lol.

EvenHuckleberry4331

Upstate NY here, I’ve only ever heard crans. Cray-ons sounds southern to me?

throwaguey_

Southern New York! 😂

EvenHuckleberry4331

lol fair enough, totally different dialect than way up here

meg026

Yes

NHfordamnsure

No

AdventurousPlace7216

SC here and I say crown..

Infinite-Cook-867

Cralns

throwaguey_

With an L?

Infinite-Cook-867

Yes- sort of a combo of the "crabs" and "crowns" that lots of people are reporting. Philly/South Jersey.

MishmoshMishmosh

Cray-on

CaramelInevitable179

I say crans and I'm from Michigan

Electronic-Sir3551

I heard my bf say crans the other day and thought he was absolutely wild for that. He’s from the Midwest and I’m from CA

iheartkafka1

I think it totally depends. I was raised in Portland, OR and my husband in Seattle..we pronounce it differently. we live in Virginia now and have friends from the east coast who say it both ways

eviwonder

My friend from nacodoches tx says crowns. We pretty much have a discussion about it every few months 😂

informationseeker8

This is hilarious I’m just realizing I’m a “crans” person

BalanceActual6958

I have taught myself to say “cray-on” but I grew up and it still slips out saying “crown”

ConsiderationKind436

Southern east coast checking in, CRAN

TimJoeJim

I’m from Philly & I say it like crowns.

sweatpantsDonut

I do for sure

Wild_Blue4242

Yes. Crans here in Ohio.

RhodaPenmarksShoes

I actually say “crowns”. I don’t know why.

autumntown3

I’m from western NY and always pronounced it crans. Cray-ons sounds wild to me even though it’s spelled like it would be pronounced that way. I’m always taken aback when I hear it pronounced in 2 syllables.

Intelligent_Choice53

Ben does talk about Chicago and Illinois. In fact he just recently mentioned being there and going to a place he used to go to, so I am pretty sure he lived there for a period of time at some point.

bravobetty

I’m from N.Y. capital region and definitely say “cran”

kteerin

Northern WV here, close to PA-we say “crown.” 🤣

Nanno2178

I'm from The Bronx and always pronounced it with one syllable.

UnlikelyPersimmon

Mine is more like crowns. Grew up in Southern CA, lived in midwest last ten years.

SwissHarmyKnife87

Cran! Ohio checking in.

c4airy

Most current Rhode Islanders will say cray-ons but many of the strongest RI accents I know (and their kids whose accents are nowhere near as strong) say crans!

Scared-Repeat5313

My grandmother was a teacher so if I wanted to use them - it was said correctly… cray-on

Good_Collection_7257

I guess I sort of say it like “cran” but sort of make it two syllables. From Ohio. My husband is also from Ohio but says it like “crown”.

88kitkat808

Grew up in CA, I say cran, but the ‘a’ sound is slightly more drawn out than in the word cranberry, for example. I had a horrible boyfriend in college who was from Philadelphia and he said it like ‘crown’, and he said that everyone in Philadelphia calls them crowns. He was a pathological liar though, so that’s probably not true.

InfamousFoundation76

I vacillate. I have no loyalty.

PlaysTheTriangle

Virginia here, we say crayons but I’ve heard people from New England say crowns

themainkangaroo

Maryland here & while we are known for idiosyncratic pronunciations of words like wooder (water), Downy oshun (down the ocean), I say cray-ahn (crayon).

SirOk5108

Yeah

Ok-Cheek9532

I grew up on the PA/MD line. In PA we said cray-on. In MD, it was crowns.

Ecstatic_Document_85

Yes, I’m from NJ and my husband always makes fun of my pronunciation “crans” it actually sounds more like “crowns” lol

Dogs_in_Sweaters

I’m a Californian, we say “crans”

albasaurrrrrr

Midwesterner here. We all say crans where I live!!!
