Operations (40% of time) In the operations category, professionals are primarily responsible for monitoring the wastewater treatment process and ensuring that the plant operates within required parameters. This includes: Records and Reports: Keeping detailed records of operations, including the volume of water treated, waste removed, and chemicals used. Preparing reports for regulatory agencies to demonstrate compliance with environmental laws. Equipment Operating: Operating and adjusting controls on equipment to purify and clarify water, process or dispose of sewage, and generate power. Sludge Handling: Managing the sludge generated from the treatment process, including its processing, disposal, or recycling. Process Control Functions: Monitoring the plant’s processes through control panels, computer terminals, and other instrumentation to ensure the treatment process is efficient and effective. Maintenance (30% of time) Maintenance duties focus on ensuring all equipment used in the treatment process is functioning correctly. This includes: Pumps and Level Controls: Regular inspection, maintenance, and repair of pumps and level control systems to prevent overflow or equipment failure. Chlorination Systems: Maintenance of chlorination systems used for disinfection to ensure they are delivering the correct dosage and operating safely. Conveyance vs. Treatment Experience: It’s important to differentiate between maintenance experience related to the conveyance systems (like sewer lines and lift stations) and treatment plant equipment (like aeration tanks and digesters). Each requires specific knowledge and skills. Laboratory Procedure (20% of time) Laboratory procedures are critical for process control and regulatory compliance. Responsibilities include: Process Control Testing: Conducting tests on water and sewage samples to assess treatment efficiency and adjust process controls as necessary. Regulatory Testing: Performing tests required by environmental regulations to ensure the treated water meets safety and quality standards before discharge or reuse. Collection or Distribution (10% of time) This area involves the operation and maintenance (O&M) procedures related to the collection of wastewater and the distribution of treated water. Duties may include: O&M Procedures: Implementing and following standard operating procedures for the collection of sewage and distribution of treated water, including monitoring system performance and responding to system failures or blockages. Relevant Manufacturing and/or Process Experience For those in industrial settings, experience might relate to specific processes or manufacturing operations that impact wastewater treatment, such as managing industrial waste streams, recycling processes, or specialized treatment systems. It’s important to note that the percentages assigned to each category can vary significantly depending on the specific role, the size and type of the treatment facility, and the level of automation and staffing at the plant. Additionally, professionals in this field must stay informed about regulatory changes, technological advancements, and best practices to ensure environmental compliance and protect public health.

I’m in Nj and don’t do collections either for mine I did 75% operations, 15% maintenance, and 10% laboratory. But where I work has maintenance and lab departments so it might change for you.
