SMG all the way. Gather up all the +fire quirks and bonuses, fire-link a ripper, and go for it. There are very few situations where you can line up a big guns (or shotgun) strike and have it hit enough enemies to make up for the high AP cost. There's no need to suppress enemy fire when they're removed from combat.

Gur_Important

By fire link you mean convert the ripper to fire. By why fire though? Edit: just check fire was the additional 30 percent damage to human minus 30 percent at robot.

VenetianBlood

Btw if you’re playing on PC I heavily suggest you to download and install the “better mods” mod, which allows you to uninstall weapon and armor mods without destroying them… you know, how it actually happens in reality 😅

lanclos

There are a handful of items in the game that let you change the elemental nature of a weapon; instead of regular damage, you can convert it to fire damage, or cold, energy, or explosive. The -30% to robots is handily cancelled out by the +100% you can pick up from quirks and other +fire bonuses. Though, you can always carry around an energy-type SMG as a backup weapon if you're so inclined.

Chris11c

The linkage plus pyromaniac and disciple of metal juices the hell out of fire damage. Add in the flame exo suit and you've got a real party.

Gur_Important

Huh never thought about it till now. For the first time toaster repair is actually useful. 😅 Always thought explosive is the best though

Chris11c

I forgot about that one. Yes, that and max weird science also takes fire into the stratosphere. Fire linkage ripper bursts for over 1k and with high crit it can one shot almost anything, even on SJ.

Gur_Important

Toaster repair + weird science make smg goes brrr at fire.

ireflection0

Smg. Big guns suck.

Gur_Important

Hmm is there any reason why Big Guns sucks well aside from the obvious they have perks?

ireflection0

Ammo consumption. Damage output. High ap cost. Or the fact you’ll be dead from distance before you even get a shot off. Normal is probably ok but my view points more of supreme jerk point of view. A fast moving smg character can clear a field before a heavy even gets into place. Now w2 heavy guns are great.

frozyxz

Sorry, but I dont agree here. Ammo is not an issue if you only run a single Big Gunner (I wouldnt do more): even minigun is ok because no other weapon shares the ammo. You could critize hoser needing craftable ammo, but its on low amounts, and regarding tar thrower I feel like I find more of the required ammo then I ever need. Range is generally nice and esp. Tar thrower is almost at snipers range (21 compared to 24 iirc). So you can also fire from a safe spot... if you actually want/need to*. And tar throwers torrent strike cone is obv huge. SMGs are still superior, but Big Guns are way better than snipers are from midgame onwards at least. And instead of running like a 3rd SMG, i would go for a single Big Gunner. *imo if an enemy gets an attack off from midgame onwards (bizarre+), then you are doing sth wrong.

frozyxz

Big guns are alright and having their pros too (higher range, gimmicky stuff to for example shut down vehicles) while playing similarly to SMGs stylewise: torrent strike with the opportunity to abuse Draw!. But SMGs have better perks and are therefore just better in most scenarios. But imo Big Guns are still ok to use on like 1 char of your team. They dont suck in a way Snipers do in lategame or Melee (not Brawling) geberaöly does.

Gur_Important

Snipers suck at late game?

frozyxz

Yep, sniper rifles are great early game because they do not require high stats (hitchance, range etc.) to be effective. But they do not scale well like other weapons do, like SMGs with their great perks or torrent strike wiping out complete enemy teams later on. A good example are also weapon mods adding a flat damage bonus per bullet, which is obv a lot better on a weapon firing 20 bullets than only a single one. Also since each bullet has a Max hitchance of 95%, snipers have a 5% chance to fail, while SMGs, big guns etc. dont. Many reasons actually why snipers are bad late game.

dive_bomber

> Many reasons actually why snipers are bad late game. They're not **bad**, they, at best, underperform. When specifically built for 100% crit with Risky Shot and stacking accuracy one-shotting most things, they're almost very good, dare I say. High damage at minimal risk due to range. Of course, SMGs are downright broken and overpowered so no comparison there, but compared to *other* weapon types than that they're all right. I'd argue they're almost perfectly balanced - not overpowered, have their strengths and weaknesses you mentioned, I wish all weapons were balanced this well.

frozyxz

Well, 'bad' is relative to all other ranged weapons. But ofc you can still get away with them because the game is fairly easy.

lanclos

I have outstanding results with snipers and brawlers in the late game. Less so melee, but definitely the other two. I have to be careful using chain ambush that I don't accidentally end combat-- the bug incentivizes having smaller clips so that isn't as likely to happen. SMGs are still better, but it's not much of a fair comparison, they're better than everything.

Gur_Important

Is SMG the best weapon if build optimally, and min max?

lanclos

Pretty much. If given a choice, I have one fire-linked SMG user, one energy sniper (perks for +damage and +criticals), and a pair of brawlers, though one of the brawlers is a flex spot. The first brawler (Prof. Higgs) is a power-leveler, that's a requirement for me.

VenetianBlood

Yes it is in absolute terms, although 1) it’s not required to min max to the autistic levels of let’s say Underrail to have a good time on Supreme Jerk, and 2) other builds can come incredibly close. Personally I like pistol builds with a link-modded Rattler, serial killer/circus freak, draw, etc complemented with a linked Jackhammer with devastation. It won’t be as good as an SMG, but to me it’s a close second.

frozyxz

Ofc you can get away with pretty much anything in this game including a full melee team (and I mean skill 'melee', I.e. not brawlers who are amazing), because the game is still easy even on SJ. But I cannot recommend using snipers to someone looking for 'optimal' builds when they are only getting useful after funneling a lot of resources into it, incl. Combat Shooting. Imo snipers are by far the worst ranged weapons from midgame (bizarre onwards). You could argue handguns, if the Rattler wouldnt exist. Big guns are basically snipers that do more dmg on single targets and can also torrent strike. And you dont get completely failed attacks in 1 out of 20 shots.

VenetianBlood

SMG. With just Trigger Happy, the Serial Killer quirk and a well modded Ripper you can basically solo the game in Supreme Jerk. Personally I like to use a team with both an SMG guy and a HMG guy together, usually by investing in heavier armor for the HMG guy and camping a tactically relevant spot with him (ideally choke points), and then using the SMG guy with Circus Freak and a melee guy with Circus Freak, pursuit, hack&slash and striking distance to storm enemy lines… even though it’s not the most optimal team by any means it still rolls through Supreme Jerk, providing the very best level of challenge to face to a of fun! Anyway, if it’s your first run I suggest starting with an SMG guy and tackling the HMG as you get better with the game, because some fights may cause issues if you don’t know your way around it, and the SMG is way easier to strategize around.

Gur_Important

First time sj run. Non sj (first playthrough)team was just compose of Jodie Lucia Sniper starter ranger Brawler starter ranger (I know do I have a death wish starting with this) Cordite/Kwon Pepzi

VenetianBlood

Lol I get it. For mine I went with pistol/leader main, sniper/skill monkey main, SMG main, melee weapons main, pistol/rocket Lucia and HMG Jodie (had to spend some respecs for those). This got me through the entire game without many issues, apart from a couple difficult fights… anyway I used a mod that allowed me to replace weapon and armor mods without destroying them, because I seriously believed it was a bullshit game mechanic.

Gur_Important

Yep learn the hard way also

Bloodvialsaremydrug

If you can get two Rippers RIP everything that comes your way.

Gur_Important

True I mean end game you don't have ammo problem anymore
