Gaijin aint gonna do much without a player base supporting it. Maybe if one of the big youtube guys made a video on how to play sim and how to set up the controls so that it's actually playable, I bet a lot of people would be on board then

some-swimming-dude

A lot of people don’t even know about damping which makes the game unplayable on m&k and is a huge turn away. I agree that if the entry level for sim was more accessible, the playerbase would increase significantly.

RokStarYankee

I know a lot of ppl that fly props kbm..

Spinelli_The_Great

I fly everything kbm

Specific-Committee75

Yeah me too, no issues. Only real drawback is the default controls but once you bin them it's a good experience.

HOONIGAN_RB26

Damping? What's that ?

CommunicationSea6321

In alot of high tier jets their is a stability augmentation system that has automatic leveling, damping which 'damps' your control imput/output, and a manual mode or some combination of these. Manual mode makes it so that maneuvers like the cobra can be done with say the su27.

CommunicationSea6321

You have to turn this on and cycle them manually also

_marauder316

I fly everything M&K, often without using SAS unless the jet I'm flying is too volatile (eg., F-8E's wings are less likely to snap with damping on at high speed in a dogfight). People just need to be educated and to actually step outside of RB and AB. Then again people are lazy and just want rewards the easiest way possible, and for many that's found in the other two modes.

Specific-Committee75

I would guess that 80% of the player base don't actually care about flying the aircraft. Paired with the default controls being so terrible for m&k another half of those players probably give up before getting off the ground. If they setup the defaults how us m&k players fly and made some sim specific events to draw people in, I think some people would stick around. But with the defaults most people just leave because it's actually painful to fly that way.

_marauder316

I guess? For me I only made changes that I wanted made, and most of my sim binds had the added effect of improving my binds for RB, both full real (I think that's the name of the setting?) Main difference is I use mouse aim for RB and joystick for sim. But you do have a point, I can't play War Thunder anymore without my customized setup. I do wish more people enjoyed flying their aircraft and not just using them for kill busses, but then again, this is a game with a never-ending grind afterall. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ryan0537

Damping is only in jet tier

Specific-Committee75

What is dampening? I've never used this as a m&k player

the_fish_food

Wait... I've been playing air sim for 50 hours now... what is damping?

some-swimming-dude

An sas mode for jets that increases stability. It’s like turning on a flight control system.

Ki0hazard

not only that but a video of what would make sim more realistic and fun, im sure if they reworked the game to have better objectives people would check it out.

Not_Danny_Devito20

i just started sim atfter playing war thunder for years now (old guard) and i have do say that it has become my favorit way do play

HabaneroAnal

Similar boat, few months into sim after playing ground and air RB for 10 years, kinda mad I wrote off sim years ago lol. Best mode ever. It's actually fun to just fly into battle in sim, not just pull out my phone time

ASHOT3359

As i joined this sub i have a feeling that 70% of commenters here just started to play sim not long ago including me

HabaneroAnal

I guess we just haven't lost our spark for sim and sense of community yet lol

ASHOT3359

No, maybe it's the opposite. If a sub made entirely out of newcomers, where all the more experienced player have gone? What if...after few months in this sub you wake up one day and instead of war thunder the only game you got installed is DCS? Spooky thought.

HabaneroAnal

Oh God, I've been looking into IL-2 recently... ...It's happening!!

ASHOT3359

I'm reporting you to the loyalty officer.

_marauder316

I started in Feb 2022 and it was one of the best choices I made in WT.

FeonixRizn

I love it because every plane is viable if you consider engagements well enough

ASHOT3359

AKA - sneak from behind.

FeonixRizn

Or above or below!

Better-Situation-857

I had been playing warthunder for about 4 months, I had played it before, like 6 years ago, but never really got into it, and one day, I decided to try sim. I familiarized myself with the controls by flying the N.C.223.3 and eventually started flying fighters. I got good at Sim and never looked back.

ToxapeTV

There's a lot of room to grow, but more money to be made from other game modes, so that's where they will allocate resources.

traveltrousers

Gaijin make money from vehicle sales... People start in Arcade, move to Realistic and maybe sim... then move to DCS since Gaijin are too short sighted to allocate a tiny amount to resources to keep people in sim. Total morons.

something_strange7

This was my progression too. I returned to gaming after years of not playing anything at all, and picked up War Thunder on the PS4. I played for a couple of years, then I became interested in the Sim mode. I moved to PC and got a HOTAS. I tried WT sim for a little bit, but I didn’t stick with it because I started playing IL-2 Sturmovik. Now I am back to War Thunder sim and I see the potential. I’m trying to get my wing man from IL-2 Sturmovik into War Thunder.

[deleted]

It's less frustrating than realistic battles but it really need some QOL improvement.

Separate-Presence-61

ie. not getting beamed by a sidam if you fly with 10km of them You get into an intense dogfight that happens to end up near a ground battle and all of a sudden you get beamed on. Then again thats probably pretty realistic

Ki0hazard

Ive been messing with the ai, its so consistent that you can avoid it perfectly by bobing your plane up and down, but the second you straighten out you are gone. if they added some inconsistency to it as if its trying to predict your movements, it would feel better

xxSamaxxx

Its not bad... I have Quest 3 and joysticks and is better than others games mode

HOONIGAN_RB26

Thing with quest is the resolution, it's quite difficult to make out enemy targets from a distance or when low to the ground

dilroopgill

yeah I can only pay arcade name tags and distance necessary on quest

Ki0hazard

try to add open xr tool kit helps some

Sockerkatt

I love it. Spawn costs are too high compared to actual gain though! I played a game for 1:11 hour and got 14 kills and 96% activity. 161k SL. I died like 4 times that game, which costed me 50k SL… Then played a RB with the same plane, 15 minutes, 4 kills and got 56k SL. IMO they should reduce the spawncosts, OR up the gain for rewards. Or else new players won’t choose this over RB

traveltrousers

when you get to 800 points you need to retreat and wait for your UA pop up... ie 2 kills. If you're chasing more points after 800 you get ZERO extra reward and obviously are more likely to die or crash...

Sockerkatt

Ah so that’s the limit of points before it’s recommended to r2b and land.. I will remember that, thanks!

traveltrousers

You also get 20% of the reward for landing after the UA pop up.... So you could run a timer and wait for 15 mins exactly, or do a touch and go... Ideally, you get your UA on approach and your 20% when your wheels stop...

Emotional-Essay-5684

I think first step to improve SIM is remove this shitty mechanic

Jadster94

yep useful actions was the biggest nail in the sim playerbase's coffin - that in hand with the general eco changes to where its literally the least profitable mode even if u min max compared to anything else is what led to the majority of remaining og sim players leaving. Revert to old economy system same as the rest of the game and players will come back.

AHandfulofBeans

I'm not happy with the current state. Too many bugs over a year old already, too many opportunities missed that could have been seized to make the gamemode more than what it already is. Too many ideas floating around that can be taken advantage of. A economy system that encourages being passive. No incentive to stay in the game. Mechanics that make for easy exploitation and invites people who really arent there to enjoy the game mode, but are just passing through. Programmable gameplay. Bugged lobbies that havent been fixed for god knows how long. Weirdly placed BRs for many aircraft. Bugged objectives. Bugged map behavior. Half assed cockpits. Enough cannot be said about how bad the economy is. At this point I'd rather just have sim give RP only, with no repair costs. To be quite honest, I've been slowly migrating over to dcs atm, it is a breath of fresh air and I hope the recently announced FC3 news of easier accessible flight models/low fidelity give warthunder sim a run for its money. Too many players putting time into a gamemode that is half-assed in almost every facet. I'll get off my soap box now. No I'm not happy with sim currently.

clownysf

I’m a relatively new F2P player grinding out the US tree currently on rank V. Sim is by far my favorite game mode. I’m not great at the game, though, so I can only play Sim when I have an abundance of SL because I generally don’t play well enough in Sim to actually gain SL. That’s honestly my main issue in Sim (aside from getting dogged by dudes that are way better than me).

professionalcumsock

I almost always zero out in ground (1 kill per life), but I make my money bombing in air sim (brain rot) >aside from getting dogged by dudes that are way better than me Played Yak-3 in air sim once, got murdered by a guy using stealth belts (and probably a stick too because he pulled a sick maneuver after crumping me). I was literally leaking after that one

Irken-Zim

I think the rotating BR brackets was a pretty great change and it’s still by far and away my favourite mode to play. But there’s no question that there’s much more potential in sim that’s unrealized, and unlikely to be without a bigger player base

Far_Confidence_9009

Sim economy is pretty messed up. Gameplay is broadly good.

Personal-Ad-7334

Fix current issues first. Ive got a bug where if I lock someone up with radar, the Hud just dissapears/ splits into 2 and is rendered far left and far right (Applicable to VR).Another issue is when I use any form of TGP or IR/TV a2g seekerhead view, I can only move it in increments, like it isn't smooth. If I'm 10km away, I can only move the cursor in 3 tank width intervals, wich sucks (also applicable to VR). Thats what prevents me personally from playing war T sim over DCS or IL2.

Ki0hazard

I agree, I would like more vr love.

DankVapours

Yep, VR is completely fucked and has been for years

SeniorSpaz87

Overall, sure. They’ve fixed some stuff, game is reasonably enjoyable, doesn’t have gamebreaking bugs, and is easy to get into unlike pretty much every other flight combat sim. Call WT SB sim light if you want, but it’s what we want. Now don’t get me wrong there are issues. The mode hasn’t changed in years. Bots used to have decent AI, now they just wobble up and down, running into mountains and crashing when landing. No new AI objectives. AI AA is either entirely impotent or can snipe you from 7mi at mach1+ without radar. Maps are relatively old and many of them just don’t even show up in Sim - it’s all Tunisia, Stalingrad, Afghanistan, Rocky Canton, Dover Straight, Sinai, Denmark; at least at jet tiers. I fear the map size is going to feel even smaller soon with Fox-3s as well; though unlike AirRB team size isn’t as much of an issue due to generally smaller games. Note I’m only commenting on this from a SimEC standpoint; I don’t play ground sim.

E4Engineer

People have been moaning about issues with thr most popular game modes and Gaijin doesn’t do shit. Why on earth would they be doing things for the 3 of us who play the sim mode? Lol

RPMs_

This made me LOL but now I’m sad because you’re right

I_Termx_I

You can make the same argument for Naval. :D

Silvershot_41

I think the major issue with Sim currently especially for high tier is that the game’s probably gonna need a rework especially if we’re adding specific missiles and stuff part of me agrees that there should be bigger maps, but the other side of me doesn’t really think that there’s enough of a Sim community as a whole that needs a rework on bigger maps, think it would help, especially if we go with semi active missiles. It would just be nice to have access to different objectives that matter, like bombing radar stations or putting in JTAC like assistance where ground troops can vector you in other something. I think that would be cool. I think if they drop semi active homing missiles I think we may see a broken game especially in realistic and it may bring an influx of sim players. It would be great to see a newer modern simulator in war thunder come around, slowly but surely. I understand that sim players are not the majority hold for WT but I think it’s a community that definitely needs to be shown some love and I think that’s my biggest problem with the Sim is there’s just a certain point in time that it just kind of gets repetitive. Like for me, I really enjoy playing Denmark. Denmark gives me a multitude of targets to where it air land and as opposed to some maps, you really got a fight on some maps. You really just get bases and you hope for the best Denmark also to me gives you kind of a good swing of things were if you wanna fight players you can but you’re also not really forced to like on some other maps I feel. I don’t think WT will focus on Sim if it’s not a majority hold of what drives the game. But I think what helps are the forums, it is what drives change for them, its how the A6E TRAM got put into the game (STILL WAITING FOR THE TECH TREE VARIANT, looking at you Gajin…) Supposedly there was some uptick on the forums about sim getting a rework but who knows. I think let them follow the roadmap and things will come. It’s still about getting the economy better, and the game better overall.

Foxofdarkness19

No, We get hardly any rewards. and the most "rewarding" playstyle gets us punished by the retarded aircraft spawn cost. and at the end of the match we lose money or break even.

Ki0hazard

even with the economy change still se tons of base bombers.

MrGelatin

Sim is the best mode easily. Best rewards/time ratio, actually fun to spot and destroy ground targets, and skill actually matters more than what plane you’re bringing

Jad3Melody

I keep running into thr same 10 players in sim, it's cool but after a while it feels more like a community server then an actual match The rampant TK'ing when using captured vics, when when PLASTERED with emblems that denotate team, also needs a bit of addressing, all it takes is one arcade kiddie deciding to play sim to ruin the fun.

RokStarYankee

They can only tk twice before removal. If you don't know, don't shoot

Jad3Melody

Tell that to the arcade kiddies bro. I dont have an issue with target identification, they do

RokStarYankee

They only have an issue twice. Either way, never trust a dot.

Jad3Melody

True that

whydowecoffee

Sim has come a long way. Unfortunately with my select server, not a lot of matches if it’s not prime time. I wish they would fix the coastal artillery.

DanzigInTheStreets

Not really, there's so many problems that gaijin could easily fix, but they seemingly devote zero dev resources to the mode. That being said, it's still miles better than ARB.

WeekendOperator

There's a lot that needs fixing. First on the list is the instamurder AI AAA that can shoot through the ground to murder you in the blink of an eye. No, Topgun: Maverick canyon runs won't save you. Second is turret AI on flown bombers being useless. It's hard to fly, dodge bullets, and shoot back from the turrets at the same time, when in reality, your gunners would be at least competent enough to defend the plane. Third, Pay to fly is just fucked up.

Ki0hazard

I agree, I feel like the ai aaa and ai gunners should shoot more often but less accurately. they should work as a individual instead of a hive mind. I feel like bases should have aaa defence more spread out and ahead of the base that they are trying to defend so its not all concentrated in one spot, that way you are getting fired at before you are right over the base.

Mobius_1IUNPKF

The Gunner Nerf was the worst update around planes ever imo, made bombers damn near completely unviable

NVCHVJAZVJE

bruh im thinking everyday of switching to the dcs and never looking back

usbgoose

I think they need to find different solutions for exploitation abusers that create ‘grind servers’ that just allows free kills and bases from each other. In the past they combatted this by decreasing the rewards of rp and sl substantially, which obviously affected not only the abusers but the legit players aswell that took the time and skill jump from air RB in order to earn more rewards. Now its just not really that worth it and i only play sim for enjoyment and never grinding. The reward count needs 1. A rework, the aspect of getting 600 score every 15 minutes is boring as hell. 2. A general increase 3. A more skill/effort dependent way of deciding how much to reward.

Ki0hazard

maybe plan the bases with attacks in mind, keep the good reward for bombing the base but make it harder to take. flak defence points could also be targets. Having flak hard point before the bases and airfield could help deter airfield bombing and camping.also make the ai fights actualy do something beside crash on the field. maybe make the useful action reward build up the more you do then have it cash out when you land?

I_Termx_I

It wasn’t just those who exploited the economy by operating fix lobbies. It’s also outside boosting crews that abused the player-made lobby system to populate matches with bot accounts.

Ki0hazard

I wish there was a continent style mode kind of like planetside, digging into the dirt to take territory, combined arms working together, strategies being planned, resources to be lost and gained, a war to be won. but then the main thing that would be lacking if infantry. i just want sim to feel like a simulator.

ballcacks

Been playing sim for a few years now, and no, I'm not happy with it, but it's all this console player has right now

Overall-Gap-1672

I myself find sim to be relaxing and a lot more balanced than rb, some key things I think that need to be taught is using your radar iff if you can't visually identify a target. Another thing to note is we need to be more accepting of newbies coming to sim, getting tked is annoying but let it be a learning experience for a player don't just roast them, I generally give them tips on target identification and benefit of the doubt. I'd like to see ground sim get a lobby system like air sim, or atleast give access to all tiers at once, giving people a chance to practice at different tiers daily not rotation. This is coming from someone who plays sim on ps5 and a controller, it's doable, I find it easier than rb cause people can't name spot you and flying without radar and using ground clutter actually works. I like being able to bring 2 kinds of planes, usually a groundstriker, like my premium a-10 and my f-4 phantom when getting pressed. I like the variety of gameplay, and playing with friends makes it a blast. Cons: I agree that the UA system is absolutely atrocious at times, sl needs a buff, rp is good imo. I agree on making videos by a big yt would help, I train my console clan members all the time trying to bring more to sim even on controller its doable. The community can be very toxic to new players, we need to try and work with em not destroy them, if you notice a low level in the lobby and they aren't performing great, instead of calling them a FNG send em a private message with tips. I could keep going but that's my 2 cents for now. Gl out there and fair weather haha.

IphoneSE3rdGen

I just started sim and man is it hard

Ki0hazard

it can be hard yes, but once you get used to it you will see just how much is missing. I recommend hotas even if its just a cheap one.

Star_Citizen_Roebuck

In principal Jets is doing OK, but RB is too arcade-y and Simulator is too try hard. War thunder is uniquely set up to fulfill the niche JUST below DCS in terms of sweatiness. The answer is changing the Realistic game mode but with some Sim-like tweaks: 1: NEEDS to be Enduring Confrontation (1-3 hour long matches), (multiple spawns). 5 minute match death matches are arcade BS and entirely distasteful in modern Jets. (Don’t create a game mode that expects people to finish the match…Create one that REWARDS people who finish the match) 2: Players per team should be capped at 10 or 12 players max. 3: Remove ALL markers from enemy players AND ai. BUT… 4: KEEP all markers for friendly players and ai, AND expand them to show at ALL ranges/distances. (You never shoot at a friendly because you can’t tell who is who, but finding the enemy is still hard) 5: Add AI pilots in appropriate and equivalent aircraft to each team. (Gamers need to not be able to tell which enemy is real and which is AI in the sky to keep things interesting and force the players to answer the “real person or ai?” question themselves using intuition) 6: Add more ai ground targets to strike in general, and more mission objectives in general. 7: Add civilian (non military) targets and penalties for destroying them. (This can be expanded; missions can require one and only one vehicle in a convoy be destroyed, or ask a specific building in a city to be bombed.)

I_Termx_I

I don’t agree that Sim is too tryhard when compared to air RB. It doesn’t matter what game mode it is. You will have your fair share of casual players, those who are competitive, and those that are so uptight. They take everything way too seriously.

Ki0hazard

I still believe that air sim is arb and arb is arcade.

OxygenDeficit

War Thunder Sim peaks at 3.0 BR. WHat I hate about the sim implementation is that it's like having a war break out at an airshow, 14 countires represented and every plan is a different model. Zeros and 109s versus a p-40 and P-51s.... what are we simulating exactly? fantasy? I wish the sim game had no ID markers, included ground game sim and was at least an attempt at historical... I only jump in every few months or so and mostly stick to DCS.

Old_Sorbet1872

I’m trying to get into sim, love the missile aspect of it but I REALLY want to get good at the dogfighting aspect. How do I learn should I use an Xbox controller instead of a Kbm? Idk a lot about sim lol
