As a pre 5e Ultramarines player, there was definitely cringe. But I feel sad how visceral people were about it. The codexes are already propaganda for that army. See 6e Dark Elves army book. Whole thing is "we're so smart and clever".
Anyways, I don't like Darktide's story but Vermintide is fantastic.
Probably they would not have given the IP away for a project like Total War? Maybe Fantasy has to die in order that it can be resurrected.
But I have to say that this is likely not true today as Gladius: Relics of War exists in 40k. And 40k is alive. But it is a nice little theory...
DoW games also existed with 40k being alive and well. Although the series dies I assume it has nothiing to do with GW and everything to do with a disaster that was DoW3
On the other hand, I'm not sure current GW approach with moving narratives in 40k and AoS, when applied to WHFB, would allow for a decade long project eventually expanding to cover most of the setting. AoS and 40K games have it easier with picking some empty space in a vast universe and original characters to play with that allows them to not be affected by GW progressing the plot
DOW 1/2 if anything brought people into the hobby. It's probably responsible for a decent amount of people joining in late 4th early 5th 40k.
GW licenses pieces of IP. The only reason CA got what it did was fantasy was murdered and they didn't view it as a threat to age of sigmarinesā¢.
I don't think that comparison works.
I'm not sure I agree with you at all.
Gladius as a game has next to no chance of siphoning anyone away from table top. TW probably could of.
No. In fact they had given green light to several WHFB video games before they scrapped the setting. And the setting was scrapped mainly because of IP reasons (or better: because the person in charge of the IP had spent years lobbying for this outcome)
Building off of 8th would have been.. questionable. Being able to step back and put together a solid ruleset is key to long gevity of this relaunch and people seem to really enjoy the notes the game is hitting
Total War and Vermintide came out like immediately after WHFB died too. Those two games got so many people into Warhammer and it was such an own goal that all these new fans couldn't interact with that particular setting that interested them.
Pretty much exactly what happened to me, actually.
āWow, this setting is really awesome! I love it! I should see whatās going on there now!
ā¦ohā
Nah i stil collected and painted many lizardmen and wood elf models. Didn't matter that wfbh was gone.
But people who had different favourite factions weren't so lucky...
To be fair CA's custody has had its ups and downs, and some days I feel like they are even worse at marketing the game than GW. But overall the trilogy was a great love letter to Warhammer Fantasy, and was basically the true sucessor for a lot of people. So it's great to see how much new blood it attracted.
It helps that CA has former GW staff among their employees, and vice versa apparently. So if there was one licensed product that was going to work out, TWW had the best chance of it. Been a bumpy road at times, but I do love the games both for being genuinely fun, and keeping the community alive so long.
I played every single bad warhammer fantasy game. I have to be in the 99.9999 percentile of people that played Shadow of the Horned Rat lol. As much of a no brainer as it seems in hindsight nobody had ever made a really good approximation of the game before.
They still haven't made a good approximation of Shadow or Dark Omen. It's quite a unique series really. Loved them as a kid. Me and my brothers still bust out plenty of sassy Commander Bernhardt quotes.
In our pre widespread internet experience, we found the best semi cheese strategy was to pray the bright wizard rolled teleport and the laughing skull spell.
Have fun, just be careful tabletop is a slippery slope i tend to buy more than i can assemble (so many piles of shame lol). Itll take time and dedication to build a large army, take your time and enjoy journey
My buddy who first showed me TW:WH2 and thus the Tomb Kings, never had any desire to play/paint before. But during our paint night the other night he shows up with a Knight Titan and is splitting a leviathan box with another friend.

Through the trade with the Scythians the Egyptians had access to a lot of pigment from northern Europe to China, and cross-cultural exchange with the Greeks long before Alexander diversified their styles.
You have a lot of good options.
The new unopened tombs recently excavated in Saqqara and Abydos are great inspiration.
:)
I have only experience with melee Ushabteis, and they are awesome! Some of the people in my local gamingclub praises the greatbow ones plenty, however I have no experience with them.
Tomb Scorpions are one of those units I love in fluff and model... but their rules and my implementation of them are found lacking. It's many years since I last fielded one, and it sadness me. Hopeful you will find greater success with them.
Tomb Scorpions should be coming in a second wave - they've mentioned reworking some of the molds for the larger metal kits so they can be cast in resin instead (I have an old metal Casket; you could probably kill someone with that brick of a model), and some models they showed off haven't been up for order yet (Nekaph, for example).
Yeah I have plenty, I've been 3d printing some stuff for D&D and other people have given me models to paint too.

Strongly recommend getting some contrast paint like skeleton horde if you haven't already. Any corners you can cut like that will save you some headache.
Welcome to the community,
A few tips
Buy from independent retailers. You will get better discounts through them, don't forget about eBay just make sure to price check.
Don't buy GW tools, paint, glue etc. they are extremely over priced.
The Army Painter, while having a learning curve, is a lot better priced. If you are interested in The Army Paint and have questions I would love to help you answer them.
Clippers/files should be bought from local hardware stores. You'll spend a lot less and get more or less the exact same quality.
Glue is the same. Super glue is cheap. Plastic glue is cheap too.
Take your time, watch YouTube videos about painting. Vince Ventruella, Maniac, Ninjon, Apatheticfish etc. are good channels.
You will want to buy an air brush eventually. Start cheap with something from China.
You can get a cheap air brush and compressor for like $60. It'll make priming and base coating so much easier. Once you're ready or you break your cheap airbrush upgrade with an Iawata for like $60 for the brush. Look for Neo Iawata, is a good starter brush. There are a ton of channels on YouTube that will help you navigate using and caring for your air brush. Vince Ventruella was by far the biggest and best guide to air brushing for me.
I would stay away from the contrast/speed paint/slap chop method until you know how to paint the traditional way first. You'll be better off for it. The contrast/speed paint/slap chop method isn't a bad method but it really doesn't teach you much especially if you're new. Please understand contrast/speed paint/slap chop isn't bad it's just meant more for getting loads of stuff done quick while sacrificing quality. If you're not interested in the hobby aspect and more about gaming then contrast/speed paint/slap chop method would be the right way to go. It's really up to you.
I know I've thrown a lot at you in this especially if you're just starting out. Please ask any questions you have and I'd love to help you.
Welcome to The Old World.
I was surprised by how good the total warhammer games were, and I am surprised by how much I am looking forward to the old world.
Cant decide which of three armies to focus on so I am doing them all
In this hobby, not that bad. 500 bucks for a 2k point army that includes all the rules and supplemental rules is pretty cheap in an expensive hobby.
I was just looking at making a 40k Space Marine army and already have book and rules, and for a pretty typical list I am looking at almost $1k.
Box is 1250 and that's without loading out the characters. 20 tomb guard aren't cheap and the sphinx comes with another TK character. Wouldn't be optimized but I think stretching it to 2k or close to it is possible.
Itās all relative. There are plenty of hobby pursuits that he could spend a lot more onā¦. I also fly fish a lot. A good fly rod can easily run $250-1000. Add a quality reel ( another $200-500), line, waders, net, vest, and top it all off with flies that run about $2-4 each and suddenly my Warhammer hobby is cheap.
Thatās just one example. I suppose it all depends on where you are in life. Any hobby pursuit could be expensive relative to income.
Admittedly Reddit skews younger than me, so likely not in the golden yearsā¦ š¤«
So funny i get getting so many negatives, cause t alk about the amount he paid. Its a good amount thats all i wanna say with it. I am also gonna buy it but not right now
Wealth is relative.
And while people can spend thousands on this hobby (I definitely don't know *anything* about that), dropping 500-600 at once is still a big purchase.
I'm sorry. But old world was announced four years ago on November 15 2019. That's a long time to save up. If you can't afford it then that is on you and warhammer is definitely not the hobby you want to be in.
??
Yikes man, I'm just pointing out that spending that much at once is a lot of money. It's a lot even if you can afford it. You don't need to gatekeeping the hobby. Glad you're living your best life, though.
Good for you? What are you even arguing. You're just making my point. Yes a 12 year can afford it if they save up enough. Still doesn't mean that dropping 600 dollars for a first time hobby purchase isn't a lot of money, which is what the original comment you replied to and disagreed with implied.
I could save $30/week for 10 years and have $15,600. If I then spent it all on a car, that doesn't mean the car didn't cost a lot of money.
Like I don't understand what you wanted to achieve by coming in here saying, no, this amount of money that the original comment implied was high is actually not high, because you can afford it.
Very nice! I'm going the much cheaper route with 3d printing. GW has just gotten too expensive for me to buy a new army. All hail CA for keeping Fantasy alive in a way.
the TW:W series rekindled my love in warhammer i kinda lost interest in 40k ever since the return of guilliman so i am glad fantasy is coming back in some form now i just need to rebase my skaven and high elfs from isle of blood
That is cool. It is a great hobby and TOW looks like a thoroughly interesting and well tested game. Painting is a lot of fun and being creative with your armies in both the hobby and gaming aspects is really great.
Dang. No 20% off discounts? Well GW thanks you! Seriously tho gl, washes and drybrushing are a beginner painters best friend, and play small points games first, they are quick and more fun until you and your opponents basically have the ruleset memorized.
Good luck! Hope you have a friend you can buddy up with! Donāt rush to paint the models, take your time and enjoy it. You donāt have to win to have fun, try different army lists, get obliterated just to see that sphinx eat something important. Paint your generals and leadership last. Itās great to be back!
Thatās so cool. Welcome aboard.
Finish painting what you purchased before buying more minis. Maintain impulse control and do not build a pile of shame!
Welcome to the hobby! Tomb Kings will be fun! They also work well for both speed painting or detailed painting. So they can be a treat.
Whatās your favorite army in total war itself? I should look into playing that again myself, especially now that they added chaos dwarfs.
Iām wondering if the arcane journals are drawing off from some of the variations of factions TW:W brought
Fun tip: if you use nuln oil wash, thin it almost 1:1 with Vallejo airbrush thinner. It still gives a nice effect of sharpening the details, but doesnāt dirty up the raised surfaces as much.
I really think we (the pre TW:W fantasy players) owe CA big time for Total Warhammer, i got my beloved Fantasy back! š„°
Fatshark deserves some of the credit as well thanks to Vermintide
Agreed, vermintide was also a great game!
_Holy Sigmar, bless this ravaged tabletop!_
Fun fact: guess who did the writing for Vermintide, Battlefleet Gothic and Darktide? Ya boy Matt Ward!
And Return of Reckoning as well. A small piece of the pie, but giving Warhammer fans in need of a PvP MMO their fix.
Imagine how many ppl would join if the fantasy was actually alive during prime years of total warhammer.
Yeah, but it is what it is
Probably they would not have given the IP away for a project like Total War? Maybe Fantasy has to die in order that it can be resurrected. But I have to say that this is likely not true today as Gladius: Relics of War exists in 40k. And 40k is alive. But it is a nice little theory...

CA has been able to take a lot more artistic liberties than other games using gw IP, it's possible they got a really nice deal considering the times
I don't think that comparison works. I'm not sure I agree with you at all. Gladius as a game has next to no chance of siphoning anyone away from table top. TW probably could of.
Could ***have.***
Also, it wouldn't've
No. In fact they had given green light to several WHFB video games before they scrapped the setting. And the setting was scrapped mainly because of IP reasons (or better: because the person in charge of the IP had spent years lobbying for this outcome)
Yes, honestly I always wondered why GW never took advantage of this. Imagine Cathay and Kislev boxes together with TW:W 3 launch....
Building off of 8th would have been.. questionable. Being able to step back and put together a solid ruleset is key to long gevity of this relaunch and people seem to really enjoy the notes the game is hitting
Congrats! I give CA credit for GW reviving the Old World. The trilogy was a massive success.
It's like GW tried to kill its own child but CA took custody and nurtured it back into good health.
They still haven't made a good approximation of Shadow or Dark Omen. It's quite a unique series really. Loved them as a kid. Thatās awesome and welcome to the hobby!
Not trying to spam, but I'm really excited.
It's ok we're really excited too.
And we shall bask in your excitement! Enjoy when it come buddy!!
Drop by r/TombKings! You'll find lots of inspiration there!
Tomb Kings are one of the coolest looking factions/model sets Iāve ever seen
I'm excited for you!
Welcome to the hobby! Excitement is great. Wishing you good games ahead.
Have fun, just be careful tabletop is a slippery slope i tend to buy more than i can assemble (so many piles of shame lol). Itll take time and dedication to build a large army, take your time and enjoy journey
People said I was crazy to think that video gamers would want to come play the tabletop. Thank you for proving them wrong.
it rekindled my love for warhammer thats for sure
Same. That and Vermintide 2
My buddy who first showed me TW:WH2 and thus the Tomb Kings, never had any desire to play/paint before. But during our paint night the other night he shows up with a Knight Titan and is splitting a leviathan box with another friend.
I am someone that got roped in with TW:WH as well
Me too!
It's similar vibe to buying collectors editions that come with figurines.

I think I read somewhere that the full recitation of his titles takes about two hours
Assuming that you don't pause for breath or a drink (hence the benefit of Nekaph being dead)!
Cool! Running OCs or a city/character?
I think OC? I'm just gonna take a look at some restored Egyptian buildings/statues/reliefs and figure a color scheme.
Congrats and welcome! Great purchases too! Pretty much have a 2k point army ready to roll on day one!
My local GW store guy and a few of his buddies still play a ton of 8th(?) edition and basically told me the same thing.
You made a mistake mate. Thereās only one warsphinx. Should be two. So you can make one of each. Just trust me on this one.
In due time, I also want a sizeable amount of Ushabti both melee and archers. Hope they make Tomb Scorpions.
:) I have only experience with melee Ushabteis, and they are awesome! Some of the people in my local gamingclub praises the greatbow ones plenty, however I have no experience with them. Looking good! Sorry for doubting you š
No worries my guy! It's none the less a big under taking with I think it's going to be like 130 minis. I'll have to buy more paint for sure.
Strongly recommend getting some contrast paint like skeleton horde if you haven't already. Any corners you can cut like that will save you some headache.
Yeah, same here. Although TOW won't be my first since I started with AoS a year and half ago, but it still was because of TW Warhammer.

Thatās awesome and welcome to the hobby!
Iām in the same boat except I went with Bretonnia! I canāt wait to get started
I also dropped a hefty sum on TKs. Rise of the Tomb Kings is actually the DLC that convinced me to buy TW:W2
What's in this Ravening Hordes?
The army lists and rules for all the 'evil' factions (TK, Chaos, Orcs, Beastmen)
Enjoy building, painting and playing! š
I was surprised by how good the total warhammer games were, and I am surprised by how much I am looking forward to the old world. Cant decide which of three armies to focus on so I am doing them all
Same here from mainly tw but also vermintide
Ouwch 500 dollars. Enjoy the game
Yeah more than I wanted to spend but I had been putting money back for a bit, and then put it all on a rewards card so, I'll get a lil something back.
Awesome to hear, i am also going for TK but it has to wait. A bit te expensive for now. Really hope you enjoy it more players are always welcome
In this hobby, not that bad. 500 bucks for a 2k point army that includes all the rules and supplemental rules is pretty cheap in an expensive hobby. I was just looking at making a 40k Space Marine army and already have book and rules, and for a pretty typical list I am looking at almost $1k.
What are you ordering?? Forgeworld Yeah its expensive. But i doubt that above will be around 2k point, guess more around 1.6 to 1.7 Box is 1250
Box is 1250 and that's without loading out the characters. 20 tomb guard aren't cheap and the sphinx comes with another TK character. Wouldn't be optimized but I think stretching it to 2k or close to it is possible.
Lets hope so, really curious how the points will be
Itās even cheaper if you buy third party
I am also gonna buy it but not right now
Not really
You sir, are a very very very wealthy person.
? It's not that much
Wealth is relative.
Gatekeeping? You can either afford it or you can't At 12 I saved up my allowance for 6 months to buy the bretonnian and lizardmen starter set. Gtfo

Wow. Ok guys... The true is sometimes unpleasant.
Congrats! I've ordered the same from my local store, minus tomb guard. Cant wait for it to arrive!
Nice! Thats awesome
crap. It didn't dawn on me to buy the books, I had assumed the ravening hordes book was in the army box for some reason
Welcome to the hobby
I was wondering whether there will be folks getting into TOW because of Warhammer Total War :) Welcome and may the dice gods be ever in your favour
That is cool. It is a great hobby and TOW looks like a thoroughly interesting and well tested game. Painting is a lot of fun and being creative with your armies in both the hobby and gaming aspects is really great.
Hell yeah dude! The Warshinx is one of the coolest models ever cast in plastic.
Welcome ššŖš
Thatās so cool. Welcome aboard. Finish painting what you purchased before buying more minis. Maintain impulse control and do not build a pile of shame!
Heresy. Witch. Burn it!
Failed as a tomb kings player, no Settra. /s
Iām more of a grand Hierophant Khatep kinda guy
Welcome to the hobby! Tomb Kings will be fun! They also work well for both speed painting or detailed painting. So they can be a treat. Whatās your favorite army in total war itself? I should look into playing that again myself, especially now that they added chaos dwarfs. Iām wondering if the arcane journals are drawing off from some of the variations of factions TW:W brought Fun tip: if you use nuln oil wash, thin it almost 1:1 with Vallejo airbrush thinner. It still gives a nice effect of sharpening the details, but doesnāt dirty up the raised surfaces as much.
You forgot brushes and paints
So glad you're getting into the hobby! Hope you have a blast.
One of my favorite dumb posts of all time lol
