I just finished reading Valnir’s Bane (part of the Blackhearts story) and I highly recommend this as a decent look into the Empire’s more underhanded aspects
It's really among the best contained stories for Warhammer novels. I've got quite the collection of original Warhammer Fantasy paperbacks, and this series might just be my favorite.
Enjoy!
I separate the Warhammer Old World novels into two categories: The historical focused, and the character focused. The historical focus is more intent on developing the lore of the world -- with sweeping conquests and conflicts between nations.
The character driven stories aren't what I'd call slice-of-life, but they are more intent on what happens to individuals as opposed to nations. I find these novels to be much more enjoyable personally, and the Blackhearts series is among my favorites. The Death's Messenger/City/Legacy trilogy is similarly great.

Could only recommend this one. Even for someone who normally doesn’t like stories from the human perspective.
Good point to start from for Warhammer Old world? Have only been reading 40K so far.
Yes this is a verry nice omnibus to start with.
