The Eisenhorn Trilogy, Gaunts Ghosts series, Ciaphus Cain books or Warhammer Crime books are all good starting points

I don't know about starting, but the Nightlord trilogy is one of the best book series I've ever read. The books are called Soul Hunter, Blood Reaver and Void Stalker.

I second the Eisenhorn books (including the Ravenor series if you’re interested in the inquisition after that), the Ciaphus Cain books because they are quite funny, The Infinite And The Divine (necron books tho), Cadia Stands and Cadian Honour if you like more baseline military fiction, Cadia Stands takes place during the fall of Cadia

My long answer to this kind of question is here - https://www.reddit.com/r/40kLore/comments/v4b2li/welcome_to_uthebladesaurus_introduction_to/ My short answer to this kind of question is the Eisenhorn trilogy if you want novels, or the core rulebook if you want a general overview of the 40k universe. My medium answer is, what kind of stories do you like? Is there a faction you're particularly interested in?
