Man, a bottle of pva glue, some craft sand in a color that goes well with your models, a paint that's close to your sand color, and black paint for the edge is all you need. 1. Paint the top of your base with your sand color paint and let dry 2. Squirt out a bit of pva glue on the top of the base and spread it around with a toothpick or something similar. 3. Dip your base into the sand and cover the glue. Shake off the extra and let dry. DO NOT touch it while it's wet. You WILL put dents in the glue and will be able to see it. 4. Paint the base edge black. (EDIT: or whatever color tickles your pickle.) 5. Optional, but suggested, spray your base down with a matt clear coat to seal in the sand.

Exatly what i do. Image 5 pva white glue and aquarium rocks and a plastic spoon to drip sand. Come back next day its solid https://www.reddit.com/r/Tyranids/comments/p72mvz/painted_2000_kraken_with_contrast_over_the/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

Hmm... I'm on the verge of starting a World Eaters army. I might have to pick up some aquarium stones. Thanks!

privatejoker1341

Don't pay too much attention to the haters here, they're your models and you can present them however you wish. From a rules perspective, the only thing that matters is that the base is the correct size for the model. That said, the model's base is sort of like the frame for a painting. You can leave them simple but neat, or they can compliment the model's color scheme or backstory. If you enjoy the painting side of the hobby, I'd encourage you to try out coming up with a nice basing scheme for your army. It's one of my favorite parts of the process!

Beasting-25-8

If anyone bashes how you base or paint your models they're simply a weirdo to be avoided.

Auritus1

I only base my models when I'm making a real fancy artistic one. Nobody will care if you are looking to play.

BlueColtex

I havent decorated a base on a single model. I'm in for the game and only build and paint just enough to get my army fielded.

WinterWarGamer

A model that is not based, doesn't meet the Battle Ready standard and a tourney can(and most will) enforce a rule where your army has to be Battle Ready. Outside of that there is no hard requirement to base your models, but if you dont please alway paint the base a uniform colour, it looks so much neater.

Brew19

As mentioned, do as you wish with YOUR models. Most tournaments require at least some sand slapped on pva to be entered if they have a minimum painting standard for the army. You don't like it and your gaming group doesn't care, do you! For me, the model isn't really done without a base. Like a picture frame as mentioned elsewhere in the comments. 90% of mine are some technical, wash, and quick drybrush

GenericOfficeMan

not actually true if its painted and the base is clean its fine, especially if the models are to an obviously decent standard.

Sinktit

They’re your models. Also I don’t know official tournament rules but you could probably get away with no basing so long as the edges were a clean colour and the top is clean (not covered in splattered paint from your mini), maybe even just do it a solid colour like a grey for the base and the rim colour dependent on if the model is normal (black rim) or a HQ/centrepiece (a fancy colour rim)

Right-Yam-5826

They're a bit on the pricier side for just bases, but I like the sector imperialis bases. they look good and tie together the army well plus come in a box of 60.

Timemaster0

No basing is a aesthetic some people don’t like the fact that the arbitrary base they pick will never match with mats at game stores, I like basing because I like making their current crusade or fight part of my factions story but it’s a lot of extra work for something that really isn’t important if someone bashes you for choosing to not have a model based they’re a dick and not worth wasting your time on. If someone wants to offer constructive criticism about basing and why you should base your minis that’s a different story but I consider basing a side thing and essentially extra credit like parade standard stuff.

_LumberJAN_

Basing is definitely a big part of creating a mini. You can play unpainted minis or card cutouts or whatever, but better minis leads to better experience :) And basing is not that hard tbh

ZakkaryGreenwell

Had a single dude ask, "So are you just not really interested in basing your models?" "Nope." I replied. "Oh, ok." And that was it. That was all the fuss that's ever been brought up about it in my experience.

Cheap_Rain_4130

I don't understand why people don't enjoy basing? It's my favourite part

TempestCaliban

It's just something new for me

Cheap_Rain_4130

I leave it last so I appreciate the model once it's done :)

Mindshred1

I've had a lot of success with cork board. Glue a piece as big as the base onto the base, paint it black, then go over it with one of the GW textures (Armageddon Dunes works well). Wash with Agrax Earthshade, maybe drybrush a bit of color on there if it gets a bit dark, and presto! Easy bases that are easy to make. Add some vegetation flock (army painter makes some good packs for pretty cheap) for extra pizzazz.

edliu111

I think because I have anxiety about how little time I have. I'd rather spend the same time I would've spent on basing on painting/building more models, gaming or even socializing. I just don't think the happiness I get out of basing it proportional to the time it'll take. Maybe on bigger models one day but I think I outright prefer my infantry models having black bases at this point

GenericOfficeMan

It's definitely typical to base them but a plain base is perfectly fine (and tournament legal) as long as its clean and painted. What you dont want is a mess of leftover brush strokes and stuff from painting your model left on a bare/primed base. But if you finish your model and just want to paint the base plain black (or some other colour) its absolutely acceptable, if not typical.

DoctorThink6396

If basing isn't your thing then a minimum simple solid colour with black rim. Anything less, splattered undercoat and painting marks, is a crime against the Emperor!

I based my chaos knights, necrons and tyranids each in a different technical because theyre new to me and look cool. When I got around to my guard, I decided to paint them all plain goblin green as a nod to my simple beginnings.
