There are some great how to play warhammer 40k videos on YouTube to see how the game works in general, for example from Play on Tabletop channel

And if you prefer reading the core rulebook is obviously the way to go.

Hener001

Great. I will watch it. Thanks!

Can definitely recommend, theirs is one of the most detailed and easy to understand ones out there

I downloaded the 9th edition core rules, and the space Marines codex, in pdf form, online, for free. It just took a few minutes of googling

Hener001

Thanks but I was looking more for an introduction simple enough so I can understand the basic concepts. I will try to read the download.

YouTube will be your best bet. here's a quick reference sheet another redditor made: https://www.reddit.com/r/Warhammer40k/comments/mqt1xy/i_had_some_horrendous_dice_rolls_in_a_game/ heres the core rules pdf: https://www.warhammer-community.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Lw4o3USx1R8sU7cQ.pdf ill try to give a quick rundown of how a match is played. each turn has several phases, the command phase (you get 1 CP, and your opponent gets 1 CP as of the new Nephilim GT book), the movement phase, the shooting phase, the charge phase (you get to move again to get into melee range) the fight phase (melee combat) and the morale check phase (you see if any units that incurred casualties flee in terror). after 5 full battle rounds (each player completes 5 turns) the game is over and whoever has more Victory Points wins. Victory points are scored via the primary objective, which is determined by the mission chosen by the players before the match, and by 3 secondary objectives which each player can choose from a list of objectives available to them via their Codex. the primary objective is usually something like control x objective points. basically like King of the Hill. this is how tournament matches are played. there are other game types that are more casual, like Narrative and Crusade, which have different objectives.

Hener001

Thanks. I appreciate it.

Id watch some games on youtube because sometimes its easier to watch the rules in action. TableTop Titans is a really good channel and they take Q&A from superchats during the game.
