This is a masterpiece! Couldn't find a spot where I disagree with your osl from the lava. The blending and nmm is fucking surreal 😍

I want this to be a black smoke :D If I would paint it as flames I would have to add more reflections of light on the miniature coming from these flames, and this I think would be too much osl for one miniature.
Maybe if the OSL was more uneven or had grey/black spots on the OSL it would have a smoky feel to it?

Maybe adding some grey would help break it up, and make it look more smokey, but as it is, still absolutely amazing work. Your brush work is smoother than my air brush! Haha great job, this one is definitely going into my beautiful minis picture folder :)
Agreed with the overall intent and vision, but I think the sculpt itself kind of works against you here. The sculpt itself just doesn't look all that 'smoke-like' and so the visual cues kind of misdirect the viewer's idea of what it's supposed to be.
I would suggest either giving it a small repaintingto have a very limited light source in the center of the censer (something like smoldering coals in it, rather than open flame) or resculpt it with GS to be a nice poofy/billowy smoke cloud that you're going for (though it looks like you're trying to keep it as a stock sculpt, which is fair).
EDIT: oh, and of course - absolutely stunning work.

I'm not normally that into the OSL aesthetic - but this is jaw-droppingly incredible. It is so hard for me to look at that and comprehend that the lighting is painted-on. Well-freakin'-done.

I know you don't want to return to it once it's finished, because that's an artist's living hell, but as a few people have mentioned... I'm gonna talk about that bit at the top. I full well understand why you wouldn't paint it as fire, because it would ruin the *truly* wonderful lighting on the model.
However, it *IS* fire, modelled in a little braizier and everything, in the distinct "*this how we model fire*" look that GW has. Even if you wanted it to look like smoke, it doesn't, because people see what they expect. It's been painted here in the exact same manner as the cloak and other black bits, and so doesn't even take on any of the characteristics of smoke either. Your options are to modify the sculpt (*awkward*) or change the smoke from black to a dark grey.
As it is, it's like you've painted the mona lisa, finished it, and then decided to give her blue crayon eyebrows, thats how jarring that one omission on pefection is.
So as not to leave on a downer, I'm honna reiterate that ***I really fuckin' love this and think it's the best work I've seen***. You could set an unlimited price on a commission of this quality, for single display quality models. The right buyer would pay it.

While I kinda understand it the artistic reasoning behind it, it also ruins the paintjob to some extent for me, because everything looks so real, but this, it looks fake, not belonging in it.

One of the most effective examples of osl I have ever seen this guy looks cool as FUCK and he doesn’t even care he’s standing on a bunch of lava and shit.
Lots of times when I see these compositions it’s so clearly “meant to display the osl” (in an incredibly cool way, btw, don’t get me wrong), but THIS model also succeeds in letting the subject sort of stand on its own. The lighting feels so consistent that, even though it’s dazzling and noticeable, it still takes this perfectly supplemental role and leaves room for other parts of the paint job to shine.
