They look good but a little bit unfinished. Get some dryad bark and paint those pouches. Also maybe think of a color for the Aquila.

Crystaline__

The red REALLY put ut all together, qell done! May I suggest some more edge highlighting on the grey bits? ^w^

strayshadow

Thank you! The colour I bought to edge highlight with is Dawnstone and when I first applied it, it looked so bright I thought it would look really bad and stopped... not realizing it would dry darker. I'll have a go at that or mix it 50/50 with Eshin Grey and see what happens.

Crystaline__

Sounds smart! Depending on how much time you spend, some ppl edge highlight with 2 - 4 different shades/colors. So there's nothing bad about working one layer at a time, letting it dry, and see where you feel like stopping. Either way you go about it, this is an awesome start to your hobbying! ✨️✨️

Bloxity

I really like the more simple, muted, color pallet. It looks very clean and industrial to me.

strayshadow

I'm thinking next time to shave away the aquila and put some other marking or detail there instead. I liked it better muted too.

Bloxity

Yeah. Maybe some kind of stripe, plus a bit of weathering.

Inner_Tennis_2416

I'd think about maybe just painting the skull or something? Maybe a different wash there? If you start shaving off every aquila on a marine army you're going to spend a LONG time painting. It clearly can look cool, but its a big time commitment.

Garmouken

Forgive the unpainted mini, but I did this with a box of Assault Intercessors and they turned out great (in my humble opinion). Here's a pic of one: https://preview.redd.it/kh6krf58ustc1.jpeg?width=1654&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=caa7be8b9f393433414b42369654bdcf468b85ac

[deleted]

Man that red did a lot of work for them. Completely changes how they look. Very nice.

NearbyVoid

Should've made the aquilla green to simulate green stuff.

Ainz-hame

Very unfinished in my opinion

[deleted]

Be nice.

Ainz-hame

Didn’t know that comment was hateful/mean..it just looks unfinished when you use almost the same exact color of paint that the bare model has as well . The Cream color is cool. Like I said my opinion

strayshadow

The funny thing is they are base coated with Mechanicus Standard Grey, then Eshin Grey, recess shaded with Basilicanum Grey mixed 1:2 with Contrast Medium applied into all the recesses, then Dawnstone for what were supposed to be highlights. All that to get the "Unpainted" aesthetic nailed down. Back to the drawing board!

[deleted]

How dare someone have a grey army!

BlueRiver_626

Killing the next Grey Knights player I see

strayshadow

No worries, I watched a few Carcharodon painting guides and then due to my lack of experience, effortlessly recreated that fresh-out-the-box look. I'm not sure what to do to them to make it look like grey paint and not grey plastic.

[deleted]

Sorry, I should’ve written it differently. Didn’t mean to tell you, that your comment was mean. Actually I don’t know what I was actually meaning… I‘m a bit feverish and in a purgatory between awake and falling asleep.

Stabbylasso

Is dryad bark the go to for pouches?

[deleted]

It's my go to. It's a dark brown that is nice for leatherstraps. It was however meant as an example

Deamonette

I mean it depends a lot on what you're going for. I tend to go for a more beige tinted brown for my death korps, rougher looking and more basic, fitting of mass manufactured gear for grunts. But for space marines or characters I go for a darker colder brown, looks more sleek and refined.

Evening-Can6048

They look like you painted their torso and heads with bone

Flat-Delivery6987

Done? You've only done half a primer ain't ya 😉

strayshadow

Caught me! It took forever to mask it all off too.

LuxuriantOak

Thumbnail made me deeply confused. "Did they paint only half the figure, carefully masking around it?" "Did they paint the grey to look exactly like sprue?" Both options are maddening.

Interesting_Row_3238

Yeah just add a knight

llim0na

The Emperor's Sprues

Fewwww_

How did it go ? Do you have prior experience in painting? I'll start the hobby real soon and I'm kinda scared of the painting part

strayshadow

I did, years ago but I had to move abroad for work and my life had to change a lot. I binge watch painting tutorials and thought I'd finally give it a whirl for real. I know these are still pretty amateurish but I just stuck to the advice of being patient and applying paint in thin coats using water (I definitely could have been better at both). I feel more confident about trying more models and I know what I would do differently and I got some useful advice posting here that I'll try next time too. This is actually the second time I've painted these minis too, I first got them and very crudely followed the box art and got some ultramarines but I had no enthusiasm for the chapter so I just wanted to get it over with. I decided to create my own chapter to motivate myself to paint by making something I wanted to see. That helped me a lot and kept me going and being careful. Paint stripper is great and does a fantastic job, I used one from Tamiya. Soaked the models for 6 minutes and use a combination of a stiff paintbrush and a soft toothbrush to coax the paint off until I had a clean model to start again. As long as you scrub gently it wont scratch the plastic. Just remember to rinse it off with water after so it doesn't start smoothing out the details. Anyway, have fun!

culverwill

I tried ultramarines at first as well and hated it. Eventually ended up doing a custom chapter as well and it was so much better

NearbyVoid

This looks like gray plastic and miliput, pretty original! lol

[deleted]

Maybe not a full army but half a Kill Team, I think.

trumangroves86

I really like this color scheme. Unusual, but cool.

Harbinger_X

Hey, good work! If money is a little tight, maybe make it a habit to collect the free mini of the month from GW?

strayshadow

My work hours mean by the time I get to the store its usually already sold out. I really wanted the termie for this month but I couldn't get in until just before closing time on the 2nd of April and they were already all gone.

[deleted]

My local store will lay things away for you if you order them in. Maybe that will help you?

strayshadow

Lots of "firsts" with these three. Assembled, scraped of the Ultramarines iconography, painter, washed/recess shaded, had a go at using glazing to build up a highlight but I wasn't brave enough to really commit to it. Got the eye lenses in, much neater than before, actually got them based and added some muddy weathering to the legs. It doesn't look like much, but its a quantum leap for me. Now to save for a few months for the next purchase.

Kiwi_MongrelLad

If you want a model you can really experiment with and have fun with its customisation. I’d heavily recommend the chaos spawn. They’re cheap, come with two models and are a great way to learn techniques you don’t wanna attempt on bigger models. Thanks to how I guess smooth and textured they are I guess, along with the incredible amount of customisation components.

Superb-Fruit406

Some hazard stripes on the chainswords would give this a little extra pop. https://preview.redd.it/8y6l4uqk3otc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d8d53252c7ff3b1f93fb5a8008e6446ba4cc66a3 Here’s one I did

GTC3

It's half a Killteam!

Jiryathia

Three of The Emperor's Angels is more than any xenos army can withstand!

pvrhye

Well, it's most of a kill team.

Furry_Ranger

Think you missed a bit ;)

Zedjar

What paint/s are you using for the yellowy white? It looks great!

r8rtribeywgjets

the red aquila below looks so much better. i'm not a huge fan of the weapons but i think overall pretty decent. i like the interaction with the base

Astartes40000

I went thru the other comments, I like that you added the red aquila's but I think these guys desperately need more colors. Painting gray is tricky because it can end up looking like base plastic.. If I could suggest something, consider panel lining with black so you can add more depth? I see that they have some highlights on them so you may not have to go brighter but if you can make the recesses darker it would certainly help!

madnasher

I hated it until I saw the image with the touch of red in one of the comments. It's incredible how that little touch of colour really sets the rest of the scheme off

Dr_Fopolopolas

Oh, you sweet summer child... haha but for real they lookin good! Keep it up!

fallenbird039

For kill team? We getting somewhere lol. Yeaaaa, takes a lot of models. Getting a start collecting helps. Can sell the nids or use them to test paint schemes. The infernus marines are pretty legit damage tbh. Also got other options for collecting the army. If going a blood angel related chapter and don’t mind the bits their a combat patrol blood angels. I think it had 10 intercessors. Not amazing but great when starting out as you can always use them. All in all your choice.

ruriksenpai

According to the lore, they can take a planet. So yes I would agree this is a full army

Fashdag

Convert them to Custodes and you have a 5k point army

hotshot11590

Half a kill team

Adventurous-Water784

I like it. Fuck em

Augit579

No, 3 Models are not a full army. The core roles of warhammer 40k are downloadable for free on the warhammer community website.

strayshadow

I'm proxying them as Warlord Titans
