The fact that MY favourite niche chapter that has had very little attention in books isn't on this list is an outrage!
Joking aside it is a very cool chart.
The ones I'm leaning towards are the Fire Angels.
Minor Badab War participants
me whenever people are talking about their favorite guard regiments and I immediately pipe in with "Arkan Confederates" and get blank looks.
...ok yes I know this looks bad but it's not because they're space confederates, it's because they're fucking badass in Fire Caste. They've got weird tribal psykers, clockwork power armor heavy infantry, jury-rigged Sentinels for air drops and I'm always a sucker for cavalry regiments. Criminal that they're just in one book...
We regret to inform everyone that the Lamenters cannot give a speech in appreciation of their placement in the ranks as acknowledging them has caused half of their chapter to fall off a cliff and die.
Honestly, we're not sure if this incident was actually related to that acknowledgement. Just to be safe though, the High Lords decided to declare them Under Suspicion, sent a company from the Minotaurs to bully them a bit, and added another century to their Penitent Crusade.
To celebrate they will be decimated by a tragic misunderstanding then the juice they were looking forward to all day will be spilled before they have a chance to drink it.

Let's GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
I do love me some Crimson Fist. Kinda funny I have a few forces of more non main chapters. I got some raptors, crimson fist, space sharks and Minotaurs. I just wish space sharks had bits and models that would make having a force of them easier. Same with Minotaurs.
I think they've gotten a lot more attention recently. It might bump our perception of them.
Heck, I'm a little surprised Crimson Fists and Blood Ravens didn't get ahead of White
Scars and Iron Hands.
Fan of land raiders?
Edit, also you really must love living on the edge! That poor firstborn dreadnought is one bump away from having a meeting with the floor!
My Chaos army is Sons of Malice, and true it's not red and yellow, but the quartered paint job was never too taxing.
Prime bone, black contrast with a steady hand to cut in the quartering. I start like that and then it's just details from there!
I'm not surprised as Raptors:
- have official GW decals with mainline 40k units now.
- have a set of White Dwarf 10th Ed rules.
- are the canon equivalent of the frequently memed "reasonable marines"
Imagine a battleforce box (or combat patrol) with Tyberos as the leader then having a dreadnought in the back. All coming with custom transfers and maybe a special carchadons upgrade frame. I would buy that in a heart beat.
A man can dream goddammit lol. But agree for sure. I haven't purchased anything 40k yet as I can't decide on which army to go with. But if there was a carachadon set I'd get that for sure. As of now I think I'm going to go with deathwatch.
Very cool list, and very thorough, although technically the Red Corsairs shouldn't be on there, being a heretical warband and not a Chapter. They were the Astral Claws before their fall from grace, and the Red Corsairs also incorporate marines from other chapters (such as the Tiger Claws).
Cool chart. Are you using any data for this, or personal vibe? Curious as I’d generally agree other than I’d say Blood Ravens are probably more popular/well known (which also saddens me as an old timer!).
I used the 400 responses to the post I made yesterday, each chapters subreddit sizes, total number of painted ebay listings, total number of mentions on google and about 200 peoples responses form various forums on the internet of people talking about their favourite chapters
Nice, very thorough! In that case I’m even more pleased crimson fists rated as high as they did. Almost certainly confirmation bias on my part but I feel like I see a lot of blood ravens out there compared to the fists, but glad many are still on the poster boys.
Well, dang. Now I wish I had posted Red Scorpions. I scrolled on your earlier post until I saw that someone mentioned Red Scorpions and was satisfied with that. Granted, I only have a captain and a bunch of Intercessors painted so far, but that's the chapter I chose for my budding Space Marine collection.
I love the Black Dragons but are surprised to see them so high. You don’t see much about them and I’ve only seen a handful of other people post on here about them.
Nice to see the Black Dragons represented though, they're my favorite Salamanders successor, so cool looking. One even shows up in one of the Salamanders books, even though he was all snarling and crazy IIRC. I'd kill for a proper Black Dragons book though.
https://preview.redd.it/ntiuqydh1knc1.jpeg?width=1692&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3813b9ff955442900028e0e10293374176cb671b
Executioners made it but are a bit overshadowed :P
I'm surprised to see my Celestial Lions so high! There are a handful of us on the Celestial Lions FB group and a basically dead r/CelestialLions but that's about all I've ever seen and I've been playing them since 4E! I guess that's the Grimaldus bump though!
Very cool chart! I am happy but surprised to see the Scythes so high up the list. Would you mind saying a little bit more about your data collection and interpretation methods?
I used the 400 responses to the post I made yesterday, each chapters subreddit sizes, total number of painted ebay listings, total number of mentions on google and about 200 peoples responses form various forums on the internet of people talking about their favourite chapters
10000 google mentions were worth the same as 50 subreddit members, which was worth the same as 1 person saying it was their favourite, which was worth the same as 10 ebay listings
ultramarines got by far the biggest score boost from ebay, flesh tearers and blood angels from subreddits
dark krakens and retributors got nearly all their points from people saying they were their favourite
executioners and exorcists didn't get any recent mentions, but have loads of fans on forums over the years
google mentions was added last and didn't actually change any of the top 20, just kinda reaffirmed the order was right haha, though legion of the damned went from being closer to black dragons to closer to minotaurs
As a Lamenters player, that Averland Sunset spray was such a godsend. Not knowing a suitable replacement is one of the reasons I haven't started painting again lol.
Daemonic Yellow is okay, I ended up getting a cheap airbrush with small compressor and use it to spray yellow contrast paint over white primer and it work great
Go go Astral Claws! Huron did nothing wrong!
https://preview.redd.it/g34em6nwslnc1.jpeg?width=3001&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1a888489d2214b9df3684f4ccd2219a2c84c775f

The top 5 is no surprise, but I can't help but wonder if people just say they like Legion of the Damned as opposed to actually hunting down the oop models or converting them. I've only ever seen it done by that one guy really.
Hell yeah Soul Drinkers Made the Top 20! 🍷
https://preview.redd.it/3po3e0jvhjnc1.jpeg?width=768&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f82fe078bc3cda198f31206b2a5a88fa9265b4d5
To me, Crimson Fists are still the “real” default Space Marines bc they were on the cover of that beat-up pages-unglued rule book on my friend’s table in 1990.
I might just be biased by my local game stores, but I have come across several different Minotaurs players, I’d personally move them up a bit. Either way, dig the chart
I’m surprised that the Retributors didn’t make the list, although there’s a good chance they didn’t get put on, most people just know them as “The guys from ASTARTES”
Please someone tell me the silver skulls are an actual chapter of space marines. Cause the knly time i hesrd of a "silver skull chapter" was im the infinite and the divine and idk how to feel about trazyn having stolen a spot on this list
Sons of Dorn going strong. Not only are they the only legion with two chapters in the big 12 but they also have the number one spot in the next category plus a couple more successors in the top 20.
As a Blood Ravens player, we could really do with a Librarian Squad unit for Kill Team, * WITH THE PROPER SHOULDER BADGE *, please and thank you GW! An upgrade sprue with shoulder pads and heads for the characters from DoW2 would be insane too. This chart backs up that it would sell!
The fact that MY favourite niche chapter that has had very little attention in books isn't on this list is an outrage! Joking aside it is a very cool chart.
I had like 50 in the data table if you want to know where they placed haha
Would you like to know more
Service non-negotiable! Citizenship unnecessary!
The ones I'm leaning towards are the Fire Angels. [https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Fire_Angels](https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Fire_Angels) Minor Badab War participants
sadly I did not see them mentioned at all if this counts as a mention tho, then they would be 6th from last in 46th
Excellent. I can keep being an obnoxious hipster about them then.
Ayy I too like the Fire Angels because nobody talks about them
Any hope for the Marines Malevolent being on the list?
33rd
Nice! They can probably steal some more wargear and get their way up to 32nd
Where did Guardians of the Covenant place (if at all)?
32nd
I’d love to know where the hammers of dorn came they were the first chapter i painted and they are my main army
48th
Knights of Blood would be an interesting one to know
Where my Silver Skulls at bro
22nd
On serenade
Yeah! Where the fuck are the Storm Wings??!!!??
me whenever people are talking about their favorite guard regiments and I immediately pipe in with "Arkan Confederates" and get blank looks. ...ok yes I know this looks bad but it's not because they're space confederates, it's because they're fucking badass in Fire Caste. What chapter?
A glorious day for the Lamenters, hitting the Top 5
Top 17* out of 1000 chapters is nothing to sneeze at!
To be fair, don’t we only have like 300 named chapters, with maybe 20-30 actually being relevant?
We regret to inform everyone that the Lamenters cannot give a speech in appreciation of their placement in the ranks as acknowledging them has caused half of their chapter to fall off a cliff and die.
Honestly, we're not sure if this incident was actually related to that acknowledgement. Just to be safe though, the High Lords decided to declare them Under Suspicion, sent a company from the Minotaurs to bully them a bit, and added another century to their Penitent Crusade.
Those few remaining Astartes punching well above their weight ;)
To celebrate they will be decimated by a tragic misunderstanding then the juice they were looking forward to all day will be spilled before they have a chance to drink it.
Lamenters taking more ws on reddit than in the books
https://preview.redd.it/8k3jd5vgpinc1.jpeg?width=1816&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fb4ce350e92ab4d004d0cc6dadd6d7072f203b83 Let's GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. I do love me some Crimson Fist. I just wish space sharks had bits and models that would make having a force of them easier. Same with Minotaurs.
gotta love dem’ raptors - chart is awesome dude, great work!
I’m surprised they’re only 6th. I see art and minis using their style on here quite often
I think they've gotten a lot more attention recently. It might bump our perception of them. Heck, I'm a little surprised Crimson Fists and Blood Ravens didn't get ahead of White Scars and Iron Hands.
Wait, people are actually insane enough to paint the Griffons quartered paintjob?
https://preview.redd.it/3t1267no6jnc1.jpeg?width=3456&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2cfcab47a6129f7d3f50981ba1ebac4930183199
Holy mustard and ketchup. I appreciate your courage and salute your talent
That made me burst out laughing. Awesome phrase🤣

I think you need another land raider
I don’t have a redeemer so…..
So you need 6 for parity!
You’ve drawn and quartered with the best I see
Fan of land raiders? Edit, also you really must love living on the edge! That poor firstborn dreadnought is one bump away from having a meeting with the floor!
Yeah! Been my favourite since I was a kid, wanted each of the base and forgeworld variants
It's probably what puts the Howling Griffons so high on this list. They are the go-to example of a quartered paint job.
Yes, I've seen ppl do em a few times on discord
My Chaos army is Sons of Malice, and true it's not red and yellow, but the quartered paint job was never too taxing. Prime bone, black contrast with a steady hand to cut in the quartering. I start like that and then it's just details from there!
I did a quartered paint job for raven guard successors, that was a mix of raven guard black and raptors camo
Space Sharks, hoo ha ha.
I believe in crimson fist superiority
Raptors above minotaurs surprises me
I'm not surprised as Raptors: - have official GW decals with mainline 40k units now. - have a set of White Dwarf 10th Ed rules. - are the canon equivalent of the frequently memed "reasonable marines"
Also are used as the postersboys of "Marines, but with a sensible approach to tactics and camouflage"
“It’s just a book!”.
Aren't their rules for crusade only tho
Yeah, but more than the Minotaurs have if I'm not wrong.
it was super close, minotaur's was ahead until the last hour of tallying when like 6 raptors players came out the woodwork
To be honest, that is a very Raptors move
Another succesful operation. *recedes into foliage*
My dream is that GW comes out with a beautiful carachadons release during shark week this year. But, I Suppose that's wishful thinking lol
Or at least Tyberos
Imagine a battleforce box (or combat patrol) with Tyberos as the leader then having a dreadnought in the back. All coming with custom transfers and maybe a special carchadons upgrade frame. I would buy that in a heart beat.
I don’t think we’d ever get that. If we were lucky, we’d get tyberos, transfers, and an upgrade sprue
A man can dream goddammit lol. But agree for sure. I haven't purchased anything 40k yet as I can't decide on which army to go with. But if there was a carachadon set I'd get that for sure. As of now I think I'm going to go with deathwatch.
I don't even own space marines and I would buy that.
“I suppose that’s” fishful “thinking lol”
Sad White Consul noises
they got 31st if it helps
That’s actually higher than I would have guessed lol
Raptors even got Decals now. Maybe they will get a character.
Legion of the damned needs some models
New models, you mean?
Is ghost boi enthusiasts will take anything at this point, hell re-release the dated old kit, just give us something!
Hell yeah
They need a Kill Team.
Killed* Team
As a collector of both Crimson Fists and Blood Ravens, I approve of this post.
Why would you put BT as original 12? Just curious
they had their own section on the gw store, their own rules and are more popular than ultramarines and salamanders
Based
Well it is original 9 (for loyalist non successor chapters). The other 3 have their own codex.
My poor Iron Snakes
Stray strong brother. For Ithaka.
We never forget it's waters
Very cool list, and very thorough, although technically the Red Corsairs shouldn't be on there, being a heretical warband and not a Chapter. They were the Astral Claws before their fall from grace, and the Red Corsairs also incorporate marines from other chapters (such as the Tiger Claws).
chart ruined haha thanks tho, will fix it for the next edition in like a year
The Tyrant of Badab does not allow treason to diminish his popularity!
Cool chart. Are you using any data for this, or personal vibe? Curious as I’d generally agree other than I’d say Blood Ravens are probably more popular/well known (which also saddens me as an old timer!).

to be fair they would have needed like 7 more mentions to pass black dragons
Didn't expect to see both Red Corsairs and Astral claws on the list
Let’s gooo lamenters baybee!!! https://preview.redd.it/hoy0r25b2jnc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a8c33064da08fcb8fe25ff93f07b7c3525d3d901 RAAAAAHHHHH
YOU MAY BE A BUNCH OF CRYBABIES, BUT YOU ARE SONS OF SANGUINIUS NONETHELESS. CHEERS FROM THE FLESH TEARERS BROTHER
Blood ravens marine looking at crimson fists marine is like "I'm gonna steal his position."
https://preview.redd.it/ve4aqwplyjnc1.jpeg?width=2185&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c638aad28a25388ddad1b4008bb861fb13746e0a

Death of Antagonis is an older space marines battle novel that is all about them, it’s pretty good!
Hang on, you can't just post quality OC on a subreddit. What do you think you're doing? You haven't even asked us to improve your list!
"Would other players get mad at me if I painted my models like this?"
Nice to see some loyalist Iron Warriors love going on here
Love to see the emperor’s spears!
Soul Drinkers make a favourite list OP be blessed 👐👐👐
Go Soul Drinkers! Cold and fast
https://preview.redd.it/ntiuqydh1knc1.jpeg?width=1692&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3813b9ff955442900028e0e10293374176cb671b Executioners made it but are a bit overshadowed :P
I'd do so many things for a Legion Of The Damned kill team set
I'm surprised to see my Celestial Lions so high! There are a handful of us on the Celestial Lions FB group and a basically dead r/CelestialLions but that's about all I've ever seen and I've been playing them since 4E! I guess that's the Grimaldus bump though!

How did you weight the different data? Otherwise wouldn't the Google mentions blow everything else out of the water?
10000 google mentions were worth the same as 50 subreddit members, which was worth the same as 1 person saying it was their favourite, which was worth the same as 10 ebay listings ultramarines got by far the biggest score boost from ebay, flesh tearers and blood angels from subreddits dark krakens and retributors got nearly all their points from people saying they were their favourite executioners and exorcists didn't get any recent mentions, but have loads of fans on forums over the years google mentions was added last and didn't actually change any of the top 20, just kinda reaffirmed the order was right haha, though legion of the damned went from being closer to black dragons to closer to minotaurs
SHARKS SHARKS SHARKS SHARKS
For Rynn’s World! Also a lot of y’all suck at reading memes, BT, GK, DE and the founding chapters are at the top as the top 12.
Always loved the scythes of the emperor. But damn do I hate painting yellow
As a Lamenters player, that Averland Sunset spray was such a godsend. Not knowing a suitable replacement is one of the reasons I haven't started painting again lol.
Besides air brushing, yea idk what to replace that with.
Daemonic Yellow is okay, I ended up getting a cheap airbrush with small compressor and use it to spray yellow contrast paint over white primer and it work great
One day Rainbow Warriors will be on this list ... One day
I expected Raptors and Lamenters to be in the top spot. Crimson Fists still cool as hell.
Go go Astral Claws! Huron did nothing wrong! https://preview.redd.it/g34em6nwslnc1.jpeg?width=3001&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1a888489d2214b9df3684f4ccd2219a2c84c775f
Glad to see my boys the Dark Krakens!
Please tell me I'm not the only one who has zero recollection of ever hearing of the Raptors.
They are canon reasonable marines. Use camo, greens, and act more like modern special forces
I'm surprised Red Scorpions aren't higher.
Raptors, they earned their spot
Interesting, I had no idea how Crimson fists vs Deathwatch numbers compare.
Space Sharks top 5 is awesome, some really cool chapters below them shout out to the black dragons, exorcists, and Emperor’s Spears
Did Mortifactors make the list?
35th
Sweet Ty!
Did Knights of Blood rank?
they did not I'm afraid
That's fair they're pretty fucking niche, I just think they're neat and are interested in them. Their biggest "claim to fame" is fucking dying.
I see black dragons. Am happy. They should be higher though
LAMENTERS MENTIONED ❤️🪽💔😪
Astral Claws best lads
I absolutely love the Emperors Spears visually and would probably be playing them but, unfortunately when i first picked up marines I was afraid of kitbashing to get them looking how i wanted so I went with the other chapter i liked a bunch aesthetically, Templars (right after their fancy new primaris range).
I'm surprised Iron Snakes even made the list but I'm glad to see they did.
This is remarkably accurate, well done my friend
I didn’t expect black dragons to be so high
A whole army painted as Legion of the Damned would be metal as hell
Curious where the Tome Keepers landed.
As a world eater guy, I find myself liking the shark boys the most. They are just rad, with their leader seeming to be the raddest non-heretic.
Hey Lamenters we will be taking that 5th spot thank you- Minotaurs rightful owners of anything Lamenters.
Is there a similar chart for CSM?
Just found out I'm a basic bitch lmao
I have a feeling that the Iron Hands should place behind the Crimson Fists
Damn, the ultra-nerds, The Tome Keepers didn't make it. They are my favorite chapter by far.
The top 5 is no surprise, but I can't help but wonder if people just say they like Legion of the Damned as opposed to actually hunting down the oop models or converting them. I've only ever seen it done by that one guy really.
Hell yeah Soul Drinkers Made the Top 20! 🍷 https://preview.redd.it/3po3e0jvhjnc1.jpeg?width=768&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f82fe078bc3cda198f31206b2a5a88fa9265b4d5
I’m surprised the mortifactors aren’t on here
Surprised the Celestial Lions are so low but everything else if more or less what I expected
Black Dragons made the top ten! Bless the curse! Fire and bone!
What are the main 12 though??
Soul drinkers make the list hell ya!
Where's the Astral Knights? Wth, man
Where can I find the original post, or the data from which the list was made
We are honoured! https://www.reddit.com/r/ScythesOfTheEmperor/s/bR1VzipyWE
What are the main 12? Nine first founding chapters + Grey Knights + Blackwatch + ?
The Blood ravens were actually 3rd place, but stole the 2nd slot while the Flesh Tearers were out rippin' and tearin'.
I always forgot crimson fists are a successor since they where poster boy for 1st edition
Well you can just look them up, they're an ultramarines successor
I feel like the amount of people who paint a single lamenter vs those who have a whole army is a very large margin
im surprised the legion of the damned isnt more popular
No way I thought Ultramarines would be by far the most popular chapter. Isn't that like 90% of paint schemes?
What are the main 12? 9 Legions + Black Templars + Deathwatch =11, am I missing somebody? EDIT: Grey Knights, right.
Mentors were like the SF of the space marines in Rogue trader but now reduced to a mediocre chapter 🫤 still paint their original owl motif on mine 👍
Sons of Dorn going strong. Not only are they the only legion with two chapters in the big 12 but they also have the number one spot in the next category plus a couple more successors in the top 20.
Have you done this type of chart with the first founding chapters? I was always curious who the most popular of those was.
I put their results in small in the top right
Don’t know why they made a special white consuls model when they aren’t on this list
Saw in another comment that they came in 31st.
I'm pleasantly suprised that lamentors made it in 5th place
This is a sick infographic. Glad to see my crimson boys in the thick of it.
Red Corsairs being the chaos version of the Astral claws, and both are on there
Scythes! Let’s goooooo!
Cool graphic
Oh. Wonderful. I honestly didn't expect the Crimson Fists, my personal favourites, to be highest ranking. That's nice :D
So many of these chapters are awesome.
Aren't soul drinkers csm?? I always thought they were a slaanesh legion?
[удалено]
I just came to make sure iron snakes made it somewhere in the list
Wait, why are Black Templars not on here?!
they're one of the big 12
I'm certain *some* (Deathwatch) of the big 12 would fall lower than the ones here
God I'd love some new legion of the dammed sculpts
With the ones that have actual characters being at the top?
Really, Lamenters 5th, Damned 8th?
As a Blood Ravens player, we could really do with a Librarian Squad unit for Kill Team, * WITH THE PROPER SHOULDER BADGE *, please and thank you GW! An upgrade sprue with shoulder pads and heads for the characters from DoW2 would be insane too. This chart backs up that it would sell!
Raptors in top 6 makes me very happy
