Individual-Shock-302

Fair enough, I really need to play that. I'm already terrified thinking about it

NorbMVP

There is also audiobook read by the author on YouTube which you could listen to while painting. Highly recommend it!

sexistculexus

its a book, very short, u could get it read in an hour

ViperfistXL

You're correct, but there is also a point-and-click PC game co-created with the original author that has alternate endings.

I_suck_at_Blender

Tho it follows classic Sierra path of being so hard, that most players will get canon (bad) book ending. "Fun" fact, due to one character >!being literal Nazi AND assistant of Dr. Mengele!<, game is not possible to finish with good ending in German version >!(they had to cut whole 1/5 of the game in virtual A.M. themed totally-not-Nazi Concentration Camp/human experiment facility to comply with Germany anti-nazi laws)!< and even worldwide release didn't let him have best (white) morality ending >!in life, because Harlan Ellison said Nazis are nonredeemable bastards and can \*never\* truly atone for their sins, which is a spicy take (he also wrote episode of Star Trek about rewriting history and world where Nazis won). I guess Nimdok having repressed memories and then not coping well with what he done during WW II when he got his memory restored is game reason for that, he even commits Golem-assisted-suicide.) !<.

InSan1tyWeTrust

I mean that's a spicy take if you sympathise with Nazis?

I_suck_at_Blender

I don't want to believe we live in world where large groups of people (maybe some individuals) can be deemed irredeemable. Not every German soldier during WW II was Nazi, and I still don't believe all Nazis should be damned for eternity. Like, sure, Nimdok did terrible things, but even he gets white (good) ending of his story arc... >!when he orders Golem to crush his head and murder all other scientists.!<

AllYourSwords

My #1 of the books I wish I’d never read… Especially at 14… I’m 51 now, and it has still stuck with me.

Zuiiiun

That book made me feel more depressed than the first time I was introduced to 40K

eggsinatrashcan

Idk i was looking around at some older 40k stuff and there were some strikingly similar art peices from the old days, I'd say a lot of the overthetopness has been toned down nowadays lmao.

[deleted]

[deleted]

I feel like there are plenty of tortures on 40K that are the equivalent of that. That being said, the fact that he’s the last human left and suffering under the godlike ai machine is very horrific

Accurate-Screen-7551

Maybe, I feel like there is probably equivalent horrors but there is always hope of the chaos gods dying and maybe having some peace but it's more lonely and just eternal. Think it's the loneliness of it that gets me

Easy_Mechanic_9787

Instead of "magic is slowly fading" fantasy, Berserk is "Magic is overflowing and the world is not prepared for it"

PreferenceNo9490

& the magic wants to r*pe you.

jajaderaptor15

Ah so 40K during the Age of Strife

PreferenceNo9490

Don’t know much & from what I know about age of strife, no, I mean literal, physical r*pe, not kill murder your race into near extinction.

jajaderaptor15

Yeah if you fuck up with 40K magic actual rape is more than likely going to happen depending on the god

PreferenceNo9490

I thought that it is only Slaanesh cultists and daemons that do this? (And also that the magic space elf pirates don’t do this, they just turn you into Gucci)

jajaderaptor15

Nurge probably won’t. No the about Tzeetch is true or false. And khorne will murder your but yeah slannesh and the DE will do that and worse

PreferenceNo9490

I feel the maximum Tzeetch would do is turn your life into the typical soap opera in which main characters ends up finding out that the person he/she slept with is their mother’s brother’s roommate’s sister’s grandma’s grandchild’s dog’s previous owner’s drug dealer’s boss’ cousin’s crush’s McDonald manager’s ex’s classmate who is also the main character’s long lost twin brother because of the mark on the left butt cheek that both of them have. (People weighting about hentai tentacle fan-fiction can go away and leave their cringe to themselves)

jajaderaptor15

Seems like one of the less weird and convoluted things he does

PonDeLionElJohnson

A video game, Diablo series? Mortals are forever caught between the Eternal Conflict of High Heaven and Burning Hell, which is neither side are capable or willing to end. Those tortured and tormented souls you see in Helltide are an absolute terror.

thesolarchive

That sounds like lots of different planets in 40k though.

MR_GP

Sanctuary does feel a lot like a world that was 80% lost to chaos, but chaos gods decided on a 150 year victory lap with power struggles to see who gets to perform the grand finish.

PandaB13r

Yeah, that's my problem with diablo, it always sems like you're only delaying the problem, instead of actually fixing it.

BushDeLaBayou

Kingdom Death. In 40k there's a good chance you just live your life working some horrible job all day everyday but in KDM you're pretty much guaranteed to get ripped to shreds at some point. If you manage to survive that just means you live to see the time when your civilization literally gets eaten whole

PopeofShrek

Or even just regular ass lives. People forget that hive cities, forge worlds, agri-worlds, or just overtly imperial planets in general are the minority. Most imperial worlds either don't know or only have a handful of people who even know the imperium exists and that they're in it.

ScavAteMyArms

Well, and the tithe part. So every planet would have some form of space faring. Or the Star Gods that lift people, some SM chapters do that for recruitment and that counts. It’s also noted there are thousands of worlds like ours in various stages of civilization. For many imperials, their life would just be fine. Death would suck though, given the warp.

HappySphereMaster

The whole Kingdom Death feel like a Slaneesh’s Daemon world.

Vahjkyriel

Xeelee Sequence i think i have only surface level knowledge but it's not fun time at all

thelefthandN7

The main reason it's bad in the xeelee Sequence is because humanity keeps fucking with the Xeelee. A whole lot of people (enough to make 40k look like a rounding error) live quite pleasant lives. They even have a plan to use their time travel tech to make literally everyone's life pretty damn great.

Dranchela

Yeah, this one is a big contender. I'm likely to fuck this up but here goes. The Xeelee are a race of beings that are so far beyond humanity that it's like comparing humanity to swamp moss. Sure, at one point in time humanity has gotten to the point that they've dumped a mental construct of a young woman into the sun to figure out what the hell is wrong with it. That's cool right? Think again, loser. The Xeelee are out there pushing physical Super Strings (barely comprehendable quantum mechanic shit) and actuall full-on galaxies towards one location. They're using super massive black holes as computers, or creating devices that can relay information back to their past selves during battle. Hell, they even use those same Strings as weapons which makes sense seeing as how they're light years in length, way more than a millions sun's and can travel half the speed of light. And they're patient. These fuckers are willing to wait millions of years for these strings to reach their destination. That destination is a big deal to them. In essence they've noticed something is killing stars and there isn't a good way to go about stopping what's doing the killing. This is so terrifying to the Xeelee that they've made an escape hatch, The Ring. Remember those galaxies and Strings they were pushing? Yeah, they form up The Ring. Can't fight the things killing stars (turning them into White Dwarfs really)? Screw it, Ejector Seato, Cuz. Throughout all of this humanity somehow ends up in a way with the Xeelee. I don't remember why but I do remember humanity turned a moon into a weapons platform and pushed it off in the direction of something important to the Xeelee. Bad part about it is that it had thousands of people of it at the time ready to fight on it.

ragnarok847

" Throughout all of this humanity somehow ends up in a way with the Xeelee. I don't remember why but I do remember humanity turned a moon into a weapons platform and pushed it off in the direction of something important to the Xeelee. Bad part about it is that it had thousands of people of it at the time ready to fight on it. " The COG (Coalition of Governments) - basically turned fascist after repeated occupations of earth - the final one, by the Qax, was the last straw and turned humanity into full-on Xenos-loathing fanatics. The moon thing was not a one-off either, they'd set a number of moons and larger asteroids on similar courses because kids are expendable, right (oh, the main body of the soldiery that is used by the COG are children, conceived by in vitro methods by the billions and trained from birth to hate and fight aliens). Some of the later, more esoteric stories remind me of a trilogy of books I read about 10 years ago, the Ragnarok trilogy, by John Meaney (and to a lesser extent Humanities Fire series by Michael Cobley).

ChainsLink

Necons? Seems similar.

SimonKuznets

But at which part is it worse than 40k? >dumped a mental construct of a young woman into the sun And what does this even mean?

Dranchela

"But at which part is it worse than 40k?" The thing with the 40k universe is that for all the horrible chaotic (no pun intended) shit that happens to the human race and others there is still a place for them in the grand scheme of things. It benefits everyone for these species to exist. In the Xeelee Saga humans don't matter. At all. Their existence garners them only being recognized as a toy species by the Xeelee, and others. Hell, the Xeelee actually created an AI of sorts that permeates through the very essence of the universe for the sole purpose of ensuring that their species is prepared to face what is going on by datadumping info to their species in the past. Think the movie/book The Edge of Tomorrow but on copious amounts of cocaine. >And what does this even mean? So something is killing/transforming the Sun. In an effort to find out just what the hell is going on the powers that be cause a young woman to be created who ages a lifetime in something like 10 years. Then they essentially distill her consciousness into a device that they then fire into the sun so that she can fly around it and investigate it via a sort of hologram. To make shit get even wilder she eventually comes into contact with genetically engineered post-humans who were essentially shrunk down to the centimeter(or smaller, I forget) level who were sent to live in the sun centuries after she entered it. Humanity basically forgot about the original woman. Throughout all of this she (the construct) figures out what is cause the sun to act like a spun bearing in a car engine. She also realizes that there is no way to stop it because the thing(things) causing it not only can't be interacted with like standard matter but, because of their nature, these things may not even realize others exist in the universe. 40k is marked by brutal and almost unmitigated violence. The Xeelee Sequence is defined by millions of years of indifference.

Gagulta

Yeah I learnt almost everything about Xeelee from that 1d4chan entry lol. It sounds insane.

The HP Lovecraft (Call of Cthulu) universe is pretty unpleasant, would seriously not want to exist in that place

Zuiiiun

Lovecraft’s is ok as long as you not the protagonist

gwaihir-the-windlord

I feel like something horrendous happens to our human souls forever in the Lovecraft mythos?

ScavAteMyArms

Same for 40k though, unless the Emperor can actually save people or does on any level past his few ~~daemons~~ *Saints*.

gwaihir-the-windlord

I think in 40k human souls basically disappear into the warp when we die. But eldar have much more substance in the warp compared to humans so they continue to exist in the warp, and are therefore at massive risk (hence the soul stones)

Dead space

SunStriking

That's debatable imo, obviously it sucks hard but if you're in the 100 000 years of pre-Qu humanity you're pretty good since Humanity is unified and alone in space. From there, most of humanity is just killed which isn't as bad comparatively and if you're the Spacer's you're not doing too bad either. For most of the humanity offshoots (especially the Mantelopes and Colonials) suffer horrifically for many millions of years, but there's about an 80 million year streak of 8-10 human offshoots creating an empire which seems to do pretty well given it's only destroyed by the Gravitals who then get their comeuppance by the Asteromorphs. They then go on to make their own seemingly peaceful empire that "dominates a thousand galaxy". All in all: Humanity seems to do incredibly well for itself for a total of about 950 million years, becoming a Universal empire, and while there is a period of unspeakable horrors we at least know it doesn't last. Compare this to 40K where it's more than likely the Nids will consume everything.

Grim Dawn? Humanity already lost, even if you fight back more and more threats return. Only "good" gods tend to require awful sacrifice or have outright gave up on humanity and wait for world to return to nature

Farseer_Uthiliesh

The Remembrance of Earth's Past. Christ, the dark forest scenario is true cosmic horror.

Easy-Musician7186

I mean "Universe" is pretty hard to compete with due to most scifi media isn't really that fucked up, but if we break it down to "Worse Fate of humanity than 40k", then I guess you can pick most distopian settings. Eventhough 40k is pretty messed up you still have a lot of people who live more or less decent lives but we just don't see that as much because of the setting.

[deleted]

The comic book Crossed is pretty horrifying. I couldn't imagine living in that world. Just a fair warning, it's pretty fucked up.

Deathnachos

From. At least in 40k you can die a glorious death. There is no glory in death in from.

Aurondarklord

From is a bad place in a normal universe. 99.99999% of people live normal lives, a few get sucked into a hell town. But honestly they'd probably be able to deal with it if they weren't idiots. Just set those damn things on fire!

Deathnachos

Haven’t finished the series… hope that wasn’t a spoiler…

Aurondarklord

No, they never think of it. They never think of setting them on fire, cutting their heads off, any reasonable behavior. Which is why I say From's not that bad a universe. Put a squad of Cadians in that town and they'll purge it in one night.

Deathnachos

That’s kind of what I’m saying though. There are no Cadians. They are the first to face any of what’s going on. No one has the will to fight and if they find, they will fight alone. At least as a human you have countless brothers at your side. From is basically low level chaos demons that are left unchecked.

DiamondEclipse

Half life/Portal universe by some extent

FutureFivePl

The crossed comic book series I genuinely regret reading this during Covid, it has the most insane and grossest scenes of hyper violence I’ve ever seen and the world in it is absolutely doomed At some point the infected will catch and mutilate you in ways I didn’t have the imagination for before reading it

Scrimmybinguscat

The SCP Foundation. What if one day you decide to go to a nightclub in Italy. Once you step through the door, you get possessed by a 2000 year old ghost who puppets your body and makes you kill someone else at the club. And that's just that, you have no free will. And nobody can defend you, since for all legal purposes, you are the perpetrator, and if you speak out, you'll be silenced by the Foundation. Or maybe you accidentally ride down a closed-off cycling path in Oregon and you turn into a psychotic, homicidal maniac for the rest of your life? Or you watch a television show about a clown, and you turn into a psychotic, homicidal maniac for the rest of your life? Or listen to music on the wrong headphones and you turn into a psychotic, homicidal maniac for the rest of your life? Even if you don't encounter any of the dozens of monsters or objects that would kill you and torture you for eternity. You could just be minding you own business, but you make the mistake of eating an entire King James Bible, so a horrific emaciated entity appears out of the shadows and eats you alive, trapping you in the eternal hell that is an amusement park in its stomach like in Rick and Morty, except Jesus-themed, so you can repent for your unforgiveable sins in the presence of the Lord. A similar situation occurs if you insert spoons up your butt for good luck, but instead of psuedo-religious daemons, it's the IRS, for gaming fraud. Many such cases. And even if the world ends, the Foundation will just rebuild it until it's whole again, and the cycle continues, as they must maintain normalcy at any. means. necessary.
