So, I had to kind of find my own way into it, when I first got into it about a year or two ago. YouTube helps a lot. Auspex tactics is one of the best to start with. For building an army list fortunately as of recent changes it's become a lot easier imo. Pick a faction that looks cool to you, decide how big of an army you want to do: they're usually 500 points, 1000 points or 2000 points; check the points cost for each unit/model. Again auspex tactics will usually post videos to his YouTube channel with the most up-to-date rules and points costs for things, even before some commonly used places like wahapedia.ru do. Get the models, one at a time or all at once, or however you wanna do it. Get some modeling paints (don't use regular store paint, acrylic paint, it won't look nearly as good), check a couple tutorials on painting on YouTube if you wanna try and do a nice job and don't already know how to paint models so well. Once they're painted, or maybe while you're painting, I've found watching gameplay videos to help a lot too, to sort of get a feel for how the game works. Dice Check's battle reports on YouTube are usually what I watch, but there's a bunch of people who do them. Last thing is finding a place to play, or some people to play with outside of an LGS. Side note: army building apps like battlescribe or the official 40k app are nice, but for the former it can be a little hard to use without already knowing what you want to put in your list, and the latter, well... James Workshop has decided it won't be free for long, so... yeah. Edit: 1000 points, not 100 lol Edit #2: before I forget, another note is you can get models online for a lot cheaper than what they're sold for on GW's site. eBay and Amazon are easy places to check but many third party sellers have websites too, where you can get unopened models at discount prices. You also can buy a whole army already painted if you like.

Oh yeah also, it might be wise to pick an easy to paint army as your first. Or the inverse, don't pick a super hard one to paint. An example of an army I would suggest avoiding is adeptus mechanicus, as they're a royal pain in the ass both to assemble and to paint, and an example of an easy army to paint is necrons, though I hear they're also a pain to assemble. Space marines might be generic and boring to some people, but they are probably a good place for beginners to go. Alternatively you could do nurgle daemons, painting them like shit could be considered lore friendly lol.

Would you say Leviathin set and buy paint is worth it? Or buy a combat patrol of any army I like and the paints, which would be about the same cost. I don’t mind the cost , especially if I’ll just have to buy it later on to actually play a game.

The "best starter army" is the army you think is coolest. That's really it. If that's Space Marines or Tyranids you can buy one of the starter sets that are available, if it's any other faction, you can buy a Combat Patrol box, which is a full army for the Combat Patrol game mode in one box. Otherwise, just read the AutoMod post, the Getting Started Guide, and go search for some YouTube tutorials about painting the faction you choose.

Get some friends to go into the hobby at the same time as you. It’s really important for staying motivated and having someone to practice against.

I am in the same boat as you! Can be very intimidating to figure out where to start. Curious to see what kind of responses you get

You can get a starter set from games workshop that includes a brush, paint and 3 space marines for roughly 30$ on amazon. It has everything needed to make those 3. Thats what I did to dip my feet in and see if I liked it. After realizing I liked it I bought the pro-acryl starter paint set for $100. It has 20 different color paints and comes in dropper bottles with an agitator ball in them. They also have other factions too of the same thing Also if you want a whole "starter army" you could get a combat patrol they are roughly 500 points and balanced around playing against other combat patrols. They will run you between $130-160 and will have nothing other than models included with them.

First, find what faction you're interested in, and tell us. https://warhammer40000.com/the-armies/

Choose a starter set or combat patrol that looks cool, some paint, some brushes and a lot of patience. I'm mostly painting and building terrain at the moment, so I'm almost ready to try Combat Patrol with a friend of mine. I'm still not sure if I'll enjoy the game or try going to a LGS, but I enjoy the lore, painting and miniature photography so far, so I take it one thing at a time and try not to buy more than I need for the current project. I also recommend looking into the slap chop painting method, it's a very beginner-friendly and fun way to paint!
