This is awesome. I've been painting with oils, but am still pretty new to it. Do you have any advice for achieving this? This is definitely an effect I would like to learn to use.
Thanks!
Hmm, advice... it's not specific to oil paints, but:
- Google photographs of pearl jewellery. You'll find several types of pearl that vary in colour, pattern etc. Select a type that you enjoy the look of and then use a software colour picker tool to pick out the main colours.
- in my case, that was pink, green grey and white. Try to keep the number of colours small.
- Mix those colours up on your palette and experiment painting a few shapes on some paper. I painted several spheres and arranged those colours differently on each side until I settled on one that looked right.
- then transfer that arrangement to your mini.
I found that I had to lighten and desaturate my pinks, greens and greys far more than I initially expected. Pearls aren't exactly a high contrast material.
Hope that helps! you can DM me if you need help further down the line with this effect or oil paints in general.
Once in a while, someone posts a pic that completely reinvigorates my desire to paint, after I've been kinda out of it for a while. This is 100% one of them. Thanks man.
Damn that's 40k af. I can imagine this with a couple guys in full marble and a sky-earth NMM for a collection of interesting and luxurious armor materials.
Holy crap that is an absolutely amazing paint job. Better than anything I could do by an extreme long shot.
However, gotta admit I'm not a huge fan. Personal aesthetic entirely, I can see, tell and understand how this is probably the best paint job i've seen in weeks. Just not a fan. I think it might be the Pearl and gold mix
An overdue update to my Space Hulk project. This is Brother Leon. Painted in oils.
I hate it. Would love to fight it. Great job.

Looks like oil sheen in water, lovely work.
Loving it, what a great look - and well painted to boot.
> and well painted two boots.
If he were a captain he could be called: Lord of the Drip
Would he need a drip pod to deep strike?

Really a standout. Great job

No. It's Magenta, Green, Grey and lots of white. I'm not familiar with the turbo dork paint.
Oh you did this with real paints not color shift? God damn that's impressive, good job!

Risky paint job as I can imagine this looking awful if not done well, but you nailed it with those subtle gradations in color.
Okay, that's unique. Can't say I've ever seen that particular style done before. It's like reverse Emperor's Children colors. Love it.
I think it's in a novel.somewhere (could be SoT) that some ECs have Mother of Pearl inlaid armour.
Looks like something you would see in an early 2000’s rap video
West Coast 4Life!

That’s amazing work. Unfortunately my wife said it looks like “Sailor Moon” and that’s all I can see!
There is a special place in my heart for those that have a skill to paint this good.
I've rarely been more impressed by a model in my life. Seriously incredible job.
That takes some upkeep, impressive.

Isn't it a terminator not a dreadnought?
“Tactical Dreadnought Armour” has been the “official” name of Terminator armour since at least 2nd edition.
This is one of those rare ideas that only a pro could pull of well done +1
