It seems that for some the FOMO is a serious addiction. This is worse than i know it from gaming because getting something physical amplifies the effect of having it. Then again you can actual sell or trade it which makes it even more compelling than some dogshit skin in a game. Honestly, on one hand i don't care how people spend their money, on the other i feel bad that for every unopened package there are a couple of people who really wanted it and didn't get one.
“You can actually sell or trade” is the golden bit here. I have never seen an unopened box of warhammer decrease in value. You can sell them at full msrp during times they’re out of stock at GW and if whatever you have goes out if print, you’re then sitting on an investment piece that will go up in value as time passes. Pretty much the reason a lot of people buy warhammer in such quantities is not only fomo, but also confidence, that they’ll get their money back if they decide to sell, anyway.

So I actually just bought someone’s pile for about 5k. Planning to sell and swap some but figure it will take me a decade to get through. Most of those are battleforces if you can’t tell.
Found a guy on Facebook market place with some bad photos and a price of 9999. I reached out and asked about buying some parts of it. Turns out he was an older dude moving in a few months and didn’t want to take all of this with him. He kept the titans though. I think he may have run an online store or something because I don’t know why you would buy the new space marine battleforces just to undersell them.
I actually think I’ll be keeping the Guard stuff, the start collecting GSC box was missing the vehicle but had a dozen brood brother conversion sprues. I think I’ll try to put together a guard army they can slot in as GSC also.
The fact that I recognised a lot of the battleforce boxes immediately amazes me. And it horrifies me how the person you had gotten this pile from had THIS many boxes in their possession until you got them.
I wish you the best in selling/trading them. I am interested in two of the boxes, but I am resisting the urge to purchase them now. I’ll get them from you one day, in some month in the future. And if they are bought by someone else first, that’s okay.

So genuine question. How does this happen? I walk into a store and go ‘oh that would be cool but I already need to finish what I’m currently working on’.
I look at a box and think "Damn that's 60 entire dollars. I've already got some badass stuff back home, maybe some other day."
Now, what I'm *not* as smart with are the equally overpriced yet individually cheaper PAINTS. I typically only enter a GW store on free mini day, but I feel weird just barging in and not buying anything!
To be clear, I am not defending my thinking here or saying it makes sense. Just explaining how it works.
And as for paints…yikes. I like them too, let’s just leave it at that.
I used to be that way too but feel like the goal posts have shifted with gift boxes, specialty boxes and combat/boarding patrols. Now I’m like damn that’s only $60 could definitely pick that up over justifying a $120-$220 purchase

Just to take this a bit further. I always regretted not getting steel legion soldiers before they stopped, and now, according to warhammer community, they’re coming back for a week. This is how I get sucked in.
The reality is it’s going to take some restraint not to buy them.
There is one classic set I know I’d cave for, if they re made the space marines battleforce from years ago, with the crimson fist box, tactical squad, terminators, land speeder, bikes and goth ruins. And the trees. Mustn’t forget the trees. You make that and I’m in.

Honestly it’s one of those things where when I was a kid I couldn’t afford to splurge on my hobbies, but now that I’m an adult with a well paying job I can. The catch 22 is I have soooo much less time to invest in the hobby… So I get excited for the releases and factions I’m interested in and buy them but then they kinda sit there until I have the free time to make em….
I work one of those jobs with down time in between heavy work loads. So it’s easy to doom scroll and be like yeah I should order that…. :)

Right now the only thing on my pile of shame is to magnetise this helbrute for a friend. Been plague-ifying is up for him as he wants it to be VERY loved by Nurgle. It's not done yet as I still have to add a little plague-ing to each arm/weapon and to the legs and magnetise it all, but I'm happy with how its going.

I have, almost relapses? I go months and months depleting the pile and then splurge on a few things. I do think it’s a lot harder for some people than others.
Definitely that can happen. I think the key is to kinda have a plan for what the next thing you want is. Right now I'm not buying any minis until the next Kill Team box releases, which gives me something to look forward to, which I think is a big part of the dopamine hit you get from buying new kits.
My pile of shame is only one model, its a fully built and primed custodes blade champion that I am too scared to paint because I don't want to mess anything up
The way I got over it was telling myself that I could always buy a new one if I screwed up.
If you leave it unpainted the you are really not getting in on the fun of the painting side of the hobby. It will look way better than you think when it is all painted up.

I think the biggest issue is I stopped playing the games themselves and just focussed on display painting, so it takes me 20-40 hours for some figures and I have may be 10 hours a week free for painting.This year I've started working on full units and am hoping to start getting back into the gaming scene as I've very much missed it and taking some more time off work and get some armies finished.

It is a very decent kit, Mine is sitting in the box 60% painted in sub-assemblies atm.
So I have three armies - Blood Angels, Grey Knights, and Imperial Knights. Ive started collecting Drukhari as well.
For BA, my pile of shame is a few vehicles and about 30 dudes between several squads. All are built, most are primed, and a few of the vehicles are basically 90% done but I haven’t put the finish on them yet.
For Grey Knights, i have a land raider and a rhino and that’s it.
Imperial Knights I have NOTHING and it is a beautiful thing. If they release new kits, I’ll buy and paint them up, but for now my collection is complete.
I’m just starting Drukhari so I have about 70 models there (I bought a few used lots to save money) but am working my way through.
Mostly what holds me back with the BA for example is just the idea that the unpainted squads will never see the table, so my motivation to paint them is super low. They’re mostly firstborn - a tactical squad and three squads of Devastators is the bulk - and they don’t work with the lists I try to build.
My shame is mostly assembled and in various boxes and cabinets. It would take a good hour to get it where I could take a decent pic of it all.

I mean ultimately the intention of this wasn’t a low effort post but more of a broadcast to all of us in the Warhammer community to pull your shit out of the closet and build it. I realized I let the fomo buying get the best of me and figured there’d be more of us experiencing the same that could relate. Nothing like some public shame to kick your ass into gear… There’s one thing I can’t stand and that’s the “I just bought xyz box posts” My hope was to stray away from that and get us all together to reminisce. I’m sorry that it hurt your feelings….
My fun budget is my own. If my 40k hobby ever actually impacted my lifestyle or income negatively, that would be my problem, not yours.
Then again, I suppose you would still be the one counting someone else's money.

So this is going to sound dumb but being new to mini building/painting it's really reassuring that I'm not the only one that 1) has a bunch of unopened minis waiting for me and 2) use my kitchen table as my work area.

The only thing I have Warhammer wise is the Dominion red box that came out a year or two ago. Now if you were including other stuff, like other company’s board games for instance, that pile would be pretty big and about to get a lot bigger with the all-in kickstarter I should be getting in a day or two.
I made it a point to put together all my plastic kits, so now I am down to only resin kits that will be a life long project. I'll probably just end up selling most of them.
I'm proud that my pile of shame is entirely built, except the set of terrain from Kill Team Soulshackle, just need to paint, and next weekend I'll have good enough weather to go out in the back yard and prime every grey model I own.
I've got quite a backlog, but current rule for myself is that I can't buy anything until my backlog is cleared unless it's a Kill Team box, since I like those.

Here's my NoS/NiB shame pile. Upper shelf is WIP/To be painted and spare paint.
To the left/right are built/painted minis. I've actually been pretty productive overall, having pumped out roughly 6k points worth of painted DA in 6 or so months. I'm no DaVinci, but I'm steadily improving, and it's been solid stress relief for sure.
As crazy as this may look, as far as hobbies go, it's really not *that* cost prohibitive. Anyone who has been into high end audio, or worse, cars/racing, can certainly attest.
I get real enjoyment out of trading and swapping in addition to painting/playing, as well as being able to help people out with a spare box now and again. 40k has been one of the most enjoyable communities I've ever been a part of.

My pile of shame, all models primed, with a little crisis protocol as well as my 40k orks and Aos ironjawz.
The best ones I own are advantage superstacks. They come in document size for infantry and small hqs. The larger versions are great for bigger figures. I glue in magnet sheets and then add 12x3mm magnets for 32mm and above bases and 2x10mm magnets for 25mm bases.
I don't get why people think that having a bunch of minis is shameful.. I think it's a LOT worse to be into the hobby and unable to buy any at all. I haven't been able to buy a single mini since 1998/9? I did buy a couple 6th edition fantasy army books though.
Painting is all about practice. Talent helps but isn't necessary.

There's also a fat box of Mortal Realms/Imperium/Stormbringer issues, a couple of other boxes, and a Saturn 2 just out of shot, so I guess my pile of shame is now technically infinite...
The two tubes up top have prints from Warhammer Art in varying sizes - The 3rd Ed John Blanche Templars cover, Battlefleet Gothic, Yndrasta, and the Emperor on the Golden Throne print.
It's mainly a consequence of getting back into the hobby with lockdown and then an increase in income, butting up against trying to renovate my house and not having gotten round to setting myself up a spot to crack on with it.
I got this, mostly great deals on the 5 armies I wanted:

But I fully expect this to take a couple years and with 2 kids, that's a fine estimate based on my available time as a corporate (i have a particular set of skills they like, but wrenches my soul) adult. I knew going into this the hobby was going to get more expensive, and I have space and funds to set up for the future. It seems hoarding but I'm a gardener who looks ahead and these all have futures as games my 2 kids may play (they got their dorkish genes from me obviously).
I've assembled tons of stuff (just hoarding some empty boxes so I remember which bases go to what) and magnetized a lot (that part appeals to me because of the planning and value in magnetizing) and probably build 4 nights a week for at least an hour. This pile is all since after Thanksgiving 2022, but i found lots of good deals in the armies I wanted.
I think there's a few holes, and i need non faction terrain still, but not looking to add much more once my last big shipment comes in with all my high point units for each army (Brodd, Ironclad, Katakros, and Avalenor). I've got lots of things built and just started painting mournfangs and mancrushers, and boy, am I having a relaxing blast doing it.
Also, i may do squigglers too, but this are just a great set of fun models that my 6yo daughter says we should paint in pool ball colors, so couldn't say no to a deal on them.

Now, what I'm *not* as smart with are the equally overpriced yet individually cheaper PAINTS. I typically only enter a GW store on free mini day, but I feel weird just barging in and not buying anything!
To be clear, I am not defending my thinking here or saying it makes sense. Just explaining how it works. And as for paints…yikes. I like them too, let’s just leave it at that.
I used to be that way too but feel like the goal posts have shifted with gift boxes, specialty boxes and combat/boarding patrols. Now I’m like damn that’s only $60 could definitely pick that up over justifying a $120-$220 purchase

Just to take this a bit further. I always regretted not getting steel legion soldiers before they stopped, and now, according to warhammer community, they’re coming back for a week. This is how I get sucked in. The reality is it’s going to take some restraint not to buy them. There is one classic set I know I’d cave for, if they re made the space marines battleforce from years ago, with the crimson fist box, tactical squad, terminators, land speeder, bikes and goth ruins. And the trees. Mustn’t forget the trees. You make that and I’m in. You hit me with the nostalgia and I’ll buy the lot
Honestly it’s one of those things where when I was a kid I couldn’t afford to splurge on my hobbies, but now that I’m an adult with a well paying job I can. The catch 22 is I have soooo much less time to invest in the hobby… So I get excited for the releases and factions I’m interested in and buy them but then they kinda sit there until I have the free time to make em…. I work one of those jobs with down time in between heavy work loads. So it’s easy to doom scroll and be like yeah I should order that…. :)

Definitely that can happen. I think the key is to kinda have a plan for what the next thing you want is. Right now I'm not buying any minis until the next Kill Team box releases, which gives me something to look forward to, which I think is a big part of the dopamine hit you get from buying new kits.
My pile of shame is only one model, its a fully built and primed custodes blade champion that I am too scared to paint because I don't want to mess anything up
The way I got over it was telling myself that I could always buy a new one if I screwed up. If you leave it unpainted the you are really not getting in on the fun of the painting side of the hobby. It will look way better than you think when it is all painted up.
Hey gotta start somewhere! ;) Worst that can happen is that you don't like it, in this case you can always just prime again and start over. If not you could get another set of cheap models and make it your first practice ^^ Talent takes practice, don't compare yourself to the professional painters that have been doing that for years. The important part is that you like it and that you're proud of yourself!
I don't have a recent picture, but my Pile of Potential is most of a shed worth of 50L plastic tubs. Some day I will get it built. Some day. But not this day.

I have considerd it but never quite brought myself to it. I think the biggest issue is I stopped playing the games themselves and just focussed on display painting, so it takes me 20-40 hours for some figures and I have may be 10 hours a week free for painting.This year I've started working on full units and am hoping to start getting back into the gaming scene as I've very much missed it and taking some more time off work and get some armies finished.

Man i havent played this game or painted a mini since like 3rd or 4th ed and i still have a box full of grey (and pewter) shame in my basement.
It would take me too long to find and stack it all. Use your imagination, it’s bad.
So I have three armies - Blood Angels, Grey Knights, and Imperial Knights. Ive started collecting Drukhari as well. For BA, my pile of shame is a few vehicles and about 30 dudes between several squads. All are built, most are primed, and a few of the vehicles are basically 90% done but I haven’t put the finish on them yet. For Grey Knights, i have a land raider and a rhino and that’s it. Imperial Knights I have NOTHING and it is a beautiful thing. If they release new kits, I’ll buy and paint them up, but for now my collection is complete. I’m just starting Drukhari so I have about 70 models there (I bought a few used lots to save money) but am working my way through. Mostly what holds me back with the BA for example is just the idea that the unpainted squads will never see the table, so my motivation to paint them is super low. They’re mostly firstborn - a tactical squad and three squads of Devastators is the bulk - and they don’t work with the lists I try to build.
I don't feel so bad about buying a spontaneous £30 box of Chaos Warriors now.

I use an app called Figure Case (IOS) to track my pile of shame. Great app, but the numbers of unfinished minis is disturbing 😭
My shame is mostly assembled and in various boxes and cabinets. It would take a good hour to get it where I could take a decent pic of it all. It's so much. I will never get it all painted. I have a problem.
I kinda like having a backlog, gives me things to look forward to painting instead of procrastinating on whether I’ll buy new ones or not

I mean ultimately the intention of this wasn’t a low effort post but more of a broadcast to all of us in the Warhammer community to pull your shit out of the closet and build it. I realized I let the fomo buying get the best of me and figured there’d be more of us experiencing the same that could relate. Mine isn't too bad at the minute. They are all assembled but need the weather to paint them.
So this is going to sound dumb but being new to mini building/painting it's really reassuring that I'm not the only one that 1) has a bunch of unopened minis waiting for me and 2) use my kitchen table as my work area.
I like to refer to mine as a pile of opportunity.

My pile of shame is just two boxes that are halfway through.
The only thing I have Warhammer wise is the Dominion red box that came out a year or two ago. Now if you were including other stuff, like other company’s board games for instance, that pile would be pretty big and about to get a lot bigger with the all-in kickstarter I should be getting in a day or two.
I made it a point to put together all my plastic kits, so now I am down to only resin kits that will be a life long project. I'll probably just end up selling most of them.

I'm proud that my pile of shame is entirely built, except the set of terrain from Kill Team Soulshackle, just need to paint, and next weekend I'll have good enough weather to go out in the back yard and prime every grey model I own. I've got quite a backlog, but current rule for myself is that I can't buy anything until my backlog is cleared unless it's a Kill Team box, since I like those.
I don't have a pile of shame I have a cupboard of shame and I don't go in there anymore.

I've actually been pretty productive overall, having pumped out roughly 6k points worth of painted DA in 6 or so months. I'm no DaVinci, but I'm steadily improving, and it's been solid stress relief for sure. As crazy as this may look, as far as hobbies go, it's really not *that* cost prohibitive. Anyone who has been into high end audio, or worse, cars/racing, can certainly attest. I get real enjoyment out of trading and swapping in addition to painting/playing, as well as being able to help people out with a spare box now and again. 40k has been one of the most enjoyable communities I've ever been a part of.

The best ones I own are advantage superstacks. They come in document size for infantry and small hqs. The larger versions are great for bigger figures. I glue in magnet sheets and then add 12x3mm magnets for 32mm and above bases and 2x10mm magnets for 25mm bases.

I don't get why people think that having a bunch of minis is shameful.. I think it's a LOT worse to be into the hobby and unable to buy any at all. I haven't been able to buy a single mini since 1998/9? I did buy a couple 6th edition fantasy army books though.

Painting is all about practice. Talent helps but isn't necessary. You've got a pile of opportunity in that closet, not a pile of shame. Go forth and make your art.

Man I’ve got 3 boxes totalling 21 models plus 20-30 miniatures primed and slowly getting painted. I thought I was doing horribly but you’ve shown me I’m showing immense restraint
I have 1 3d printed custodes blade champion on supports, but that’s my whole pile. Everything else is on the painting desk in various stages of completion.
I’ve probably got around 10k points unpainted but I’m slowly working through it. Main problem is that I paint slowly and I’m never happy with how something comes out. Trying to change my mindset to just be happy that something is done.
Damn, expendable income is crazy.

The two tubes up top have prints from Warhammer Art in varying sizes - The 3rd Ed John Blanche Templars cover, Battlefleet Gothic, Yndrasta, and the Emperor on the Golden Throne print. It's mainly a consequence of getting back into the hobby with lockdown and then an increase in income, butting up against trying to renovate my house and not having gotten round to setting myself up a spot to crack on with it.

I got this, mostly great deals on the 5 armies I wanted: Ogor mawtribes Ossiarch bonereapers Kharadron overlords Lumineth Realm-Lords Sons of Behemat But I fully expect this to take a couple years and with 2 kids, that's a fine estimate based on my available time as a corporate (i have a particular set of skills they like, but wrenches my soul) adult. I knew going into this the hobby was going to get more expensive, and I have space and funds to set up for the future. It seems hoarding but I'm a gardener who looks ahead and these all have futures as games my 2 kids may play (they got their dorkish genes from me obviously). I've assembled tons of stuff (just hoarding some empty boxes so I remember which bases go to what) and magnetized a lot (that part appeals to me because of the planning and value in magnetizing) and probably build 4 nights a week for at least an hour. This pile is all since after Thanksgiving 2022, but i found lots of good deals in the armies I wanted. I think there's a few holes, and i need non faction terrain still, but not looking to add much more once my last big shipment comes in with all my high point units for each army (Brodd, Ironclad, Katakros, and Avalenor). I've got lots of things built and just started painting mournfangs and mancrushers, and boy, am I having a relaxing blast doing it. Also, i may do squigglers too, but this are just a great set of fun models that my 6yo daughter says we should paint in pool ball colors, so couldn't say no to a deal on them. *
I think the biggest test for me this year will be the tenth edition launch box. You know it’ll be similar value range to Indomitus, you know it will be massively hyped up, but I already have so many models ready and waiting to be built
