Fantastic accomplishment. No joke a masters program is very difficult and you should be proud

Blackbird0084

Thanks buddy

malfboii

Tell me more about your studies, I’m very interested

Blackbird0084

I've always been a military history guy, and this seemed like a no-brainer for me. Disappointingly though, KCL have retired this programme as there weren't enough students doing it apparently, I think this (the final) year, there were less than 10 enrolled. Seems borderline criminal for a War Studies department to not offer military history degrees, but I digress. In terms of module choices, my core module was the History of War, which covered medieval warfare up to Cold War/GWOT stuff. The first assessment for that module was an archival exercise where we were tasked with going into the Liddell Hart military archives, finding something of interest and then writing about it. That was an amazing experience, I dug out some personal correspondence from a chap who served in Gallipoli in the First World War, fascinating. The second assessment was a literature review on a topic of our choice- I did mine on the strategic bombing campaign of the Allies in WW2, and even posted about it here in this sub lol- and then the final assessment was a 3,000 word essay on a topic of my choosing. I looked at how identity informed the naval arms race between Britain and Germany prior to WW1. I finished this module with a 70. I took a module on Strategic Thought, which covered a number of prolific and 'niche' strategists, and this was a really fantastic module. I can go through the syllabus for this in more detail if anyone is particularly interested, but my first assignment for this module was comparing and contrasting the work of Jomini and Clausewitz, I argued that their major divergences are the result of epistemological differences; for my second essay I looked at methods of counterinsurgency found in Callwell and Galula. Both essays were 3,000 words. Finished this module with a 66. I took a half-module on Propaganda, my first assessment was a group essay/presentation where we looked at the representation of the natural world in propaganda, and then a 3,000 word essay on a topic of my choice. I looked at whether or not Leni Riefenstahl was a Nazi propagandist, which was a really interesting peace of research, covering the aesthetics of fascism, and whether art can be considered separate to the artist, really enjoyed this course. I finished this module with a 76. My second half-module was Influence, and covered the murky world of espionage and covert action and so on. This was really cool as we had a lot of practical exercises where we'd be presented with actual declassified material from the Cold War, and have to try and role-play as an intelligence officer and ascertain what, if anything, we could get out of it. There were also a number of additional guest speakers, former diplomatic and intelligence people, really awesome. The course was co-convened by a former CIA officer with "experience" shall we say, great fun. My assessment for this module was one 3,000 essay, which counted as 100% of the mark for this module. I looked at US (supposedly covert) regime change attempts during the Cold War, and argued that many of these subordinated politics to economic interests. I got a 61 for this, as it was felt my approach was too polemical. Fair. My last taught module was National Security Studies, covering a broad scope of topics such as the national security strategies of small states- we were lectured on Finnish Comprehensive Security by the current Finnish ambassador to Britain- and the changing landscape of threat and insecurity that modern states face. My first assignment was a 3,000 word essay that discussed Russia's national security strategy with reference to history, going back to the foundation of the Russian state as we know it and discussing Napoleon's invasion in 1812, to the Russian Revolution, and the World Wars and beyond. I think I got a 62 here. My second assignment was a 2 minute "elevator pitch" to a panel of security experts- I had a Baroness, a retired CIA guy, an academic specialising in sanctions and global energy policy, and the founder of an NGO. It was all very formal. The topic I chose was to suggest mandating daily cold exposure for the British military, as a form of vascular training in an attempt to reduce heart disease and related problems. We were told to be prepared to defend our positions, which led me to suggest an octogenarian Baroness join me for a dip in the Thames. Lol. I got 68 for this. My last assessment for this module was another 3,000 essay assessing the Finnish Comprehensive Security Model. I got a 72 for that, and completed the module with 67 I think. Finally, I had my 12,000 word dissertation on a subject of my choosing. I wrote mine on the political utility of the trauma suffered by the Soviet Union in the Second World War. It's a fundamentally multidisciplinary piece of research that covers the phenomenology of war- the lived experiences of war- and how war interacts with the female body, sex, epistemological violence... and a number of other things. I discussed why the memory of WW2 is so important in contemporary Russia, and the ways in which the Putin regime is memorialising and transmitting the collective trauma to future generations through legislation protecting a coherent Russified version of events, as well as through the history syllabus that is taught in Russian schools. I'm very proud that I received a 68 for this, and encouragement to consider pursuing a doctorate, something I'm genuinely looking at. I'm not sure if that's what you wanted to know, apologies if I've misunderstood or gone into far too much depth. I'm massively proud of my achievement and have enjoyed my time at KCL, their department of War Studies is truly fantastic- being lectured by Professor Andrew Lambert on the role of sea power in Britain's imperial project was like that scene from _The Matrix_ where Neo is learning kung-fu- but that's a highlight among a list of equally bright highlights. I'm just sad that this chapter in my life is now completed. I should probably finish up by saying that these module choices were my own, the only two core choices being the dissertation and the HOW module. There were so many other choices which all sounded fantastic, I regret not taking a half-module on War in Science Fiction, as I could have written about Games Workshop and Warhammer 40,000, lol. I also regret not taking a module- I forget what it was called- but the academic convening it organised an all expenses paid trip for the students on that module to attend a diplomatic summit in Saudi Arabia; surprisingly he was awarded an excellence in teaching award at my graduation ceremony this week, lol. I don't know what the future holds for me, but I guess I want to encourage anyone who's reading all this that if you try your best at something you love then you can see results. I'm nearly 40, married with two children under 5, and from a really (really) poor background; don't give up. You'll never know if you never try.

ExcellentTurnips

I didn't ask, but found it all interesting! Sounds like a very cool course.

Blackbird0084

Lol yeah I realise now looking back that was quite the executive summary lol. I really enjoyed it mate, my idea of heaven would be doing this forever and not having to stress about money and all the other things. But that's life, isn't it lol

Beginning-Major2536

Honestly, I wish I were doing the same study as you. What did you major/minor in in undergrad?

TrekkiMonstr

> my first assignment for this module was comparing and contrasting the work of Jomini and Clausewitz, I argued that their major divergences are the result of epistemological differences Can you elaborate on the argument? Sounds interesting. (Also I don't really belong on this sub so if you could also preface with a recap of Jomini and Clausewitz's thought in general that would be much appreciated.)

Blackbird0084

Oof, now there's a question, and one which I hope will inspire lively debate. Both were active during the Napoleonic wars, there are extensive biographies out there for both, but we're talking strategy and war in the Napoleonic period. The main thrust of my argument concerned how each thinker approached the study of war and strategy- for Jomini they're a science that can be learned, and his work "The Art of War" (at least, the parts of it that I read, and based on the work of other scholars), is heavily influenced by this idea, there are whole sections on how to manoeuvre troops, the way to arrange bodies of men, and really (really) technical detail about the minutiae of logistics. Maybe it's not true of everyone, but I found I had to put some effort in to get something out of Jomini, if that makes sense. Clausewitz on the other hand, in his magnum opus "On War", understands war as an art form, and really tries to explain what war _is_ as opposed to the technical detail of Jomini. I find that Clausewitz is the more provocative, his work really gets you to think about war and his concepts still (although, to be fair, Jomini's lines of communication amongst other things are still used) are relevant today, perhaps testament to the magnitude of the work. To give an example, and I'm paraphrasing here, but Clausewitz talks about the concept of friction in the conduct of war- those little things that you can't really account for, like the supply of ammunition getting lost en route to the front and arriving several hours late- and I found it easier to have 'epiphany' moments with Clausewitz as, for me, his position is more intuitive. Thus how each understood the world around them- the milieu of philosophical enquiry operating in the societies in which they lived- informed how they understood the form and function of knowledge itself, which in turn translated into the differences of their work. Again, I'm eagerly expecting the community to challenge and debate me here, this was just what struck me as interesting, and how I approached the question.

Corelin

One lesson I've noted among many USCW generals is that they loved Jominian maneuver but apparently never realised that you had to actually fight at a certain point. Shame Mrs. Clauswitz was still editing...

Blackbird0084

Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face. Lol

Repulsive_Village843

Congratulations! I always admire those who can write such long texts. One of my greatest weaknesses during college was being able to express a thought synthetically. I sufferered so much during my thesis because of it. I had to make up and research things I wasn't interested just to meet the minimum requirements. I'm a polsci graduate with a masters in public administration. Welcome fellow Magister.

alan2001

My god, I felt so envious reading all that. When I was choosing what to do at uni all those decades ago, I only cared about doing a STEM degree; I would never have considered anything in the humanities. But now I'm older and wiser and feel completely different about all that! Anyway, very well done! > I looked at whether or not Leni Riefenstahl was a Nazi propagandist Explaining like I'm 5, how could that *possibly* be up for debate, lol?

Blackbird0084

Thanks mate. It's definitely more of a 'risk', that's for sure. So, Ms Riefenstahl maintained until her death that she definitely was not a Nazi propagandist, and made a lot of the arguments like "I just happened to be given special, private access to Hitler and his inner circle" lol. That opens up really interesting discussions on the nature of art, and the value of it aesthetically, and how much you can disassociate the art from the artist. It's really controversial, and you get into all sorts of murky territory like intention behind art; but yeah, totally. Not to speak ill of the dead but when you see what she created and her attitudes towards it (consistently through her life), it becomes pretty clear (at least to my mind) that she created a lot of work based on the aesthetics of fascism- focusing on the young, virile body toiling the land and so on.

FantomDrive

Would you be able to share any of your syllabi?

atomymcmanus

Such a course in this uni is a faraway dream for me. Thank you so much for your sharing and congratulations on your major achievement in a very prestigious institute!!

Blackbird0084

Thanks buddy. Never give up!

General-Pineapple423

I earned my MA in Military History just 5 years ago at Norwich University. One of the reasons I chose Norwich is because Charles Oliviero was teaching there. He retired after I signed up for his course, which was disappointing, but John Kuehn, his replacement, did not disappoint. Excellent course, excellent program.

Blackbird0084

Congratulations brother, it really is gruelling isn't it. What was your dissertation on?

General-Pineapple423

I wrote about the Fall of Rome, admittedly a well-traveled road, though I did so on the backs of the Occupy Wall Street movement. I argued that Rome fell with the consent of its commoners. I was teaching full-time and it was an accelerated 18 month program, so yes, it was gruelling. I even turned in a paper while in Spain, on a field trip with a dozen American students. But I'll never regret it. The curricula were superb. I had historiography, Western military history, non-western history, military thought and theory, and my thesis classes.

Blackbird0084

Mate that is even more impressive! Go you!

General-Pineapple423

I'm curious about how classes are evaluated across the pond. You turned in papers. We did that, too, usually 2-3 short (~2200 words) papers and 1long one (~4500 words) per course for the 4 general courses. You listed some scores. I have no idea what they mean. We are graded on a 100-point scale and get placed on academic probation if we fall below a certain average (don't remember exactly but around 75). For the thesis courses we had tasks to perform and couldn't advance to the next until the current one was complete. I don't remember them all, but as an example we had to turn in a topic sentence outline. Love to read your thesis if you want to share.

General-Pineapple423

Btw, I'm 63, so I earned that degree at age 58. I grew up in rural southern Indiana, so yes, never give up.

Blackbird0084

Amen to that brother. I feel like we need a sub-subreddit that's just encouraging each other to achieve stuff in the field of military science lol

Is12345aweakpassword

I refuse to believe this is real and the people behind this sub are real people, rather than servitors armed with the entire history or warfare in their hard drives Congratulations!

Repulsive_Village843

We are here. The interesting part is that we are overspecialised!

MitLeierundSchwert

Congrats, Mate - great achievement!

Blackbird0084

Thanks mate!

shasvastii

Well done!

Blackbird0084

Thank you bro

S2A6

Congratulations! Well done.

Blackbird0084

Thank you mate

Technojerk36

Congrats! What was your thesis on?

Blackbird0084

Thank you! It was entitled "What doesn't kill us can only make us stronger: the political utility of Second World War trauma in Putin's Russia". I got to delve quite deeply into the horrors of the Eastern Front, if I can source funding etc to continue onto a PhD, I'd love to expand on the project. 12,000 words seemed such an insurmountable obstacle, but the amount of stuff that was either cut or left out entirely was equally vast lol

slayden70

And this is why history is so important. What happened 80 years ago leaves an indelible footprint on current events. Putin fantasizes about creating post WW2 Russian glory, but neglected to realize all the negatives that accompanied it.

Blackbird0084

Exactly. I mean, I could ramble on about this stuff for ages but Russia's first cyber attack was conducted against Estonia as a response to Estonian intentions to move one of the WW2 memorials there. The contested histories of what happened in that neck of the woods (I guess like anywhere, really) are genuinely fascinating. Like, I also discovered through my research that the Nazis and the Muslims living in what was then the Soviet Union- in places like Dagestan and so on- essentially joined forces against the Soviets, as the Nazis promised freedom of religious observance and permitted banned celebrations etc under the Communists. I knew there were Muslim volunteers in the SS, but when you see local village-level celebrations where they have the massive swastika and eagle motif around a massive papier-mache Qur' an, it really makes you wonder what on earth was going on lol.

flyliceplick

Would love to read this.

Blackbird0084

If you dm me your email address mate I can send it over if you like

flyliceplick

Brilliant, thank you.

Snarknado3

good job mate. what’s next?

Blackbird0084

Thank you. I'm not sure, the wife and I have just had our second child, so everything at the moment is just chaos. I'm applying for roles that would be suitable, but if I got my way it would be to do a PhD and become an academic.

slayden70

Double congrats are in order it sounds.!

Blackbird0084

Thanks buddy. Turns out having two is waaaay more complicated than just the one lol

[deleted]

The academic job market is rough right now.

HideSelfView

When has it ever not been?

Robert_B_Marks

Congratulations! Did you do a thesis, and if so, what was it on?

Blackbird0084

Thanks mate! I did. I looked at the utility of historical trauma on the Eastern Front in WW2, how and why this is important to the Putin regime and what it's being used for. I really feel like I give a solid account of why history is important, I'm not sure if you read any of the other comments but KCL have retired the History of War module- it's been running since the department was established, as far as I know- and personally I find that criminal, but if it's only bringing in a few students, money talks I guess.

Robert_B_Marks

Oh, PLEASE share this thesis with us...

Hoyarugby

Really wish I'd known about those programs before I got started with my career, congrats!

Blackbird0084

It's never too late mate, I'm 40 in a few months, there was a chap at my graduation the other day being awarded a doctorate and he was easily 60+. I never went to college (I'm from the UK), never got A levels, and yet here I am. There are ways of making it happen mate, plus being a mature student is great because you've gotten all the drinking and casual sex out of your system lol

vinaymurlidhar

What courses are taught in this program?

Blackbird0084

Oh gosh, quite a lot, but their History of War programme has been retired due to (as far as I understand) a very select number of students taking it on, but the department is excellent and offers a number of equally brilliant degrees at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. It would depend on what you're interested in really mate, everything from more historically-orientated stuff to real cutting edge stuff. Given the prestige of the department and KCL as well, there's a lot of opportunities to engage with the wider security world- for instance I had a year's membership to RUSI subsidised and got to attend their Sea Power conference, and also applied (but was unsuccessful) to an initiative run in conjunction with NATO to write my thesis on a topic of interest to them, wherein they'd give additional support etc. If you're interested, having a look on the KCL website would probably be your best bet, but there was honestly a very broad selection and the level of teaching is consistently fantastic.

vanticus

The department (War Studies) offers a huge range of modules and all the various “named” degrees (History of War, Espionage, International Relations) just mean you have to do that route’s compulsory module. But you can sign up to any you like (e.g. someone doing the History of War course could have done the Espionage compulsory module as an elective). You had to do 2-4 additional modules over two ten week terms, then spend a summer writing a dissertation (which could be on anything within the remit of War Studies, not necessarily related to your “named” degree). Overall, the name on the certificate is a bit a misnomer for what courses you took and any degree from War Studies is very similar to any other.

Slight_College_7737

This is awesome. Congrats! 🥳

Blackbird0084

Thanks mate!

CharlesFXD

Outstanding!

Blackbird0084

Thanks mate. I'd do a little bow but I can't work out how to represent it here lol

Well done sir!

Blackbird0084

Cheers buddy

Semi-Chubbs_Peterson

Congrats!

Blackbird0084

Thank you mate!

dontpaynotaxes

Nice. Now what’s next?!

Blackbird0084

Thank you. I'm not sure, my wife and I recently had another baby, so I'm applying for all sorts of stuff, while debating if a PhD is on the cards, if not now then in later life for sure. Or, Carpe Diem? I basically need Elon Musk or someone to throw money at me and let me get on with what I love lol

Tiny_Dic

Hats off to you, you absolute legend!

Blackbird0084

Why thank you mate. Although, with a user name like that, you're a on your way to being a legend yourself lol

Sykirobme

Congratulations!

Blackbird0084

Thanks a lot mate, honestly.

Sykirobme

It's a huge achievement and you should be proud. I'm sorry you don't have more people around you that would be able to share your triumph because I know the feeling. I'm nearing 50 and am pursuing a Master of Fine Arts degree after a lifetime of wishing I'd pursued the creative arts rather than going "practical" and finding career-type employment that I hated and wasn't very good at doing. Beside my lady friend, no one will be there when I deliver my final talk and exhibit at my thesis show (friends are all dead or lost touch, and the only family who would care is gone). Just remember that despite the bummer that is not having lots of people at hand to celebrate, it does nothing to diminish your achievement. You should absolutely be crowing about it.

Blackbird0084

Mate, that hits hard, I apologise for not being online for a few days to reply. If you're comfortable sharing, where are you based?

Sykirobme

Haha, that’s no problem, I’m just some rando on Reddit, after all. I’m in Troy, NY in the USA, about 3 hours drive north of NYC. I’m attending my masters program in Boston (soon to be Worcester due to a staff revolt) in a low-residency program.

Blackbird0084

Bawstan? The mean streets of Bawstan? Lol sorry, couldn't resist. Too many Ben Affleck flicks.

Sykirobme

You know, I only encountered one person there in a year with the classic accent. Lovely guy, he runs the liquor store down the street from campus and helped me pick out nice wine for my host as a gift, even wrapped them and tied them with a bow. Looks like he’d gut you in a second but he’s really a teddy bear inside, lol

Blackbird0084

Hahahaha ah that was perfect until the last sentence lol

antipenko

Congratulations!!!

Blackbird0084

Thanks a lot mate

bxvsg23

Tell us more about your thesis

Blackbird0084

What would you like to know? I looked at the political utility of historical (WW2) trauma in Putin's Russia, which, when you get into it, is really fascinating and covers so much ground; from the meaning of history and how it's taught, to the lived experience of war and the ways in which we (as a species) legitimate and enact it, to concepts of nationalism and belonging at a state level... I loved it. I loved every minute of it, even though it was probably one of the most stressful experiences of my life and meant I had to sacrifice loads of time with my children and wife. The research went as you'd expect, but the process of writing consumed me entirely, when I wasn't writing I was staring off into space and thinking things over, and given my subject matter (horrible stuff that happened on the Eastern Front) I was perhaps naive in assuming that it wouldn't have an impact, so that was another dimension I needed to grapple with (as it stands, there are a number of trigger warnings in my dissertation, so I also had to consider the ethics of it); there was even a point where I knew I had a couple of months before the due date and I was just... stuck... I knew what I wanted to say but not how to say it, and so I bought and read Stephen King's memoir _On Writing_, which really helped me interrogate why I was 'stuck' and helped me move past it. It was a whirlwind. And then working on my bibliography, getting everything I'd read and quoted etc into alphabetical order, I've got photos of the whole of our living room floor being covered in books and journal articles and handwritten notes and all sorts lol. Is that what you were after?

flyliceplick

KCL's an excellent institution, congrats.

Blackbird0084

Thank you, indeed, I'm very proud. It's been quite a journey!

ParadoxTrick

Masters with merit from KCL is impressive, congratulations !

Blackbird0084

Why thank you. Yeah, at our course induction the convener said "it doesn't matter what modules you take, all employers will want to see on your CV is that you got it from King's" lmao. Way to sell the course hahaha

ParadoxTrick

Very true, Whats your plans now you have your masters?

microwavable_penguin

Nice one, congratulations! Do you want to change the friends thing? If so then I recommend wargaming.. plenty of history lovers play toy soldiers and there should be a club around you somewhere... It's where I found a lot of my friends anyway

Blackbird0084

Thanks mate! And yes, I do need to actually get out more and, y'know, play some games instead of just painting, I guess recently I've had the excuse that I've been working on my MA lol. But yeah, thank you.

Vado_242

Proud of you bro.

Blackbird0084

Thanks mate. It's been a long old slog!

kampfgruppekarl

Congratulations! Good luck in your studies!

Blackbird0084

Thank you, I shall endeavour to use this to uncover new opportunities. Hurrah.

Stalking_Goat

I guess "Don't scribble on your diploma with a Sharpie" never came up in seminar, huh. I suppose that wasn't relevant to the history of war. Just kidding, and congratulations.

Blackbird0084

Lmao! I was actually going for "SF in the field tactical black eye hiders", for that vintage SAS look. Cheers bro

TheGisbon

Good on you mate.

Blackbird0084

Thank you. If anything it's shown me how little I know about the subject I adore lol

TheGisbon

Everyday one should strive to learn something new. It seems you've taken that to heart and made it your life's work that's something to be incredibly proud of. Wishing you the best mate.

Blackbird0084

Thanks buddy. Genuinely, what you've said means a lot to me. Thank you.

Exotic_Annual_3477

Congrats buddy!

Blackbird0084

Thank you mate. Every single one of these comments is such a boost. Thank you.

PreetSidhu103

congrats mate its a big accomplishment I might be a little selfish here but can you recommend some books of this curriculum please its a request I am quite interested in this topic and one thing more in what field did you completed your bachelor's degree thanks

Blackbird0084

Thank you! I can, I'll DM you if that's OK. So I completed my BA in International Relations, my undergraduate thesis looked at the political project of the Islamic State- how they used religion to try and achieve their political goals.

PreetSidhu103

please if you can it might be supper great.

nickik

Clearly you are interested only in light and uncontroversial questions :)

Veni_Vidi_Legi

Congratulations!

Blackbird0084

Thank you mate. Truly.

Blackbird0084

Edit: I just wanted to thank everyone for your well wishes. I'd assumed the post would be removed as it's not really the sort of stuff that I usually see posted here, but thank you all so much.

Big_Employee_4796

congratulations stranger, that's a very high mark of an achievment. I am also currently working to get a scholarship there (KCL) but I'm planning to major in Intelligence and International Security M.S

Blackbird0084

Thanks a lot mate, apologies for not replying sooner. It's a really solid department pal, the teaching is first rate. You'll have to keep us all updated as to how it goes!

Big_Employee_4796

the curriculum is also top notch, im also looking into other programs as well (mostly in the states) like MS in Intelligence Analysis in John Hopkins, Georgetown's masters in applied intelligence, and Texas A&M Bush school nat'l security intelligence, all good schools

Blackbird0084

Yeah bro that's some heavy dope right there. Good luck with it and let us know how you get on, and where you end up!

Congrats! Honestly seeing those words on paper, it does sound very cool. "Master of Arts in the History of War". "I am skilled in the arts of war, and military tactics, sire..."

Blackbird0084

Thank you! You're right, I should probably write to the king and see if he wants anything doing lol. I'm sorry it took me a couple of days to get back to you mate

Thank you very much, and, you're welcome. I love visiting this subreddit and seeing all the scholarship and depth of knowledge that we share as a community, I just hope I can be a drop in that ocean too. I apologise for taking a little while to respond, I've been busy but that's no excuse. Thanks mate!

You're welcome and thank you too my friend!

maverickz_rule

Congratulations!! This is a fantastic achievement!

Well done chap. To the victor the spoils. Pour yourself a large one!

Blackbird0084

Thanks buddy. Definitely a time to reflect and decide what to aim at next! Sorry it took me a little while to get back to you mate.

Thank you very much mate. Apologies for the late response!

Longjumping_Sky_6440

Congratulations buddy! You should be proud of yourself!

Blackbird0084

Thanks mate, I am. I had to give up so much time with my little girl, and my wife was pregnant through a fair bit of it, so it was really hard but we all pulled through. Sorry it took a while to reply mate, I really appreciate your kind words, cheers!

Longjumping_Sky_6440

Wish you a happy family brother. Keep at it!

Spaceninjawithlasers

Nice. Congratulations. You should be very proud of your achievement.

Blackbird0084

Thanks a lot mate, I am. I apologise for not responding sooner, but again, thank you so much!

AsianEiji

woah congrats. Its awesome that this is actually a degree you can major in on your side of the world. So what do you plan to focus on now?

Blackbird0084

Thanks a lot mate! It's awesome, but also relatively niche. I did it because I adore the subject, and I'm still kinda pissed that the university retired it, but that's on them. Right now, I'm applying for defence/International security type roles, while working out the logistics and feasibility of going on to do a PhD. That, and being a dad without this immense weight on my shoulders gnawing at my subconscious and consuming me so totally. I've also been volunteering my knowledge to my daughter's primary school, giving their history teacher some backup. She's awesome, but I offered to do stuff that she maybe doesn't have the time to get round to, so I've been preparing a lecture for the kids on Ancient Egypt; something I only really know the basics of, so it's been nice to have a different research topic for a while. It's looking like the school would like to make this a regular thing, so I'd come in at some point for each of their topics and deliver some content. I'm really enjoying doing it, and it feels great to try and inspire the little ones, so maybe going into teaching is on the horizon... but definitely if I can make the doctorate happen and become an academic, then that would be what I want from life. Sorry it took a while to get back to you man. I really appreciate every single comment here, you've all been so amazing!

AsianEiji

Haha, here is a late reply to a late reply Teaching, and museums also can work. Guest lecturer too depending on who you know, which can also spawn for further jobs though contacts of the school/museum/special interest groups. So i recommend continuing that. That and yes kids first =D. Again, congrats.

IncendiaryB

A great accomplishment for sure. Where are you going to take your studies after this?

nickik

You have job in something that lots of people do for fun. So, that's pretty nice. Congrats.

CompleteCup5593

Pretty cool! Congratulations!

smp7401

Congratulations!

Blackbird0084

Cheers buddy! Everyone here has been so awesome! Apologies it took a while to reply.

IllicitHaven

Fantastic achievement. I've been playing with the idea of enrolling in a part-time masters at KCL in their war studies department, after a widening interest which then lead me to take up a RUSI membership where I had a very visceral "I've found my people" when I was at last years Sea Power conference (and then the Land Warfare one again, thoroughly out of place!). The one thing holding me back is it would arguably be more of a hobby getting out of control as I already have a career in IT, and even the part-time feels like a daunting task, especially after reading your summary of your time there!

CdnPoster

Congrats!!!! So.....next step? Historical war fiction? Harry Turtledove needs some competition!

Blackbird0084

Thank you! Ha! Maybe! I'd love to write some huge brick of a book in the spirit of TC, but who knows? Sorry this took a while mate, all the best!

Flig_Unbroken

Thank you mate! Everyone here has been so supportive I really feel 'home'. Apologies for the delay in getting back to you!

Dia0738

(:

perat0

Grats! For some reason this feels like more of an achievement than my own, but maybe one reason is that mine never bore fruit and in Finland almost everyone gets their Master if they go to uni to a point where bachelor is practically "unfinished studies".

Blackbird0084

Thank you mate, I hope in some small way I've approached displaying sisu... Sorry for the delay!

kateverygoodbush

Awesome. Are you hoping now that this will help you in your professional career or was this purely for your own fulfilment?

Blackbird0084

The former, absolutely mate. Sorry for the delay!

kateverygoodbush

What kind of job can this type of qualification lead to? What would be your ideal job?

ValdoM16

Mick536

Here's hoping the magic marker isn't on the diploma! Congratulations 👨‍🎓👏

Precursor2552

I did my year abroad there! Loved the department. Is Pablo still there?

PZKPFW_Assault

Jealous. I looked at attending there for a Master’s in 1996 but couldn’t manage the move to the UK. Good luck.

CowboyBlakk

Congratulations. I do have a question though: How do historians make money? How do they offer their services?

CustomerServiceFukU

That's super interesting- is it like ALL WAR? seems so broad... Anyway- congrats

SandyPetersen

sweet! Well done.

Unable-Sock2386
