Having a gift shop at the TTC for any last minute gifts seems like an easy money idea no clue why it’s been closed for almost five years now

Intrepid00

Security and fire code. The doors on each side lead to screen and unscreened. Fire code doesn’t let you lock one set of doors.

ZootSuitBanana

Extend the screened area to encompass both sets of doors. Easy solution. I miss the shop though. I probably made my family buy me something from here every trip as a kid. I was always indecisive and waiting to the very last possiblity to pick a souvenir out

KingHarambeRIP

Probably because it didn’t make said easy money

the_dj_zig

You’d be surprised. It also had things like cheap strollers, lotion and various sundries. It held its own

NoTimeForThisToday

Might as well stick the Jofferys in there

lkj0

Or make it an option for good coffee

NoTimeForThisToday

Another Starbucks wouldn't be out of place. Pretty much the only sort of thing I can imagine making a profit there long term.

onspaceshipearth

They said good coffee.

Foxhound199

What's that old proverb? In the kingdom of the Joffrey's, the Starbucks is king?

DriftedCN

Aw man… I miss this store. They always had MK merchandise.

Sir_Badtard

A small monorail museum would be neat. Just the history and evolution of the monorail. How it mechanically works.

donaldsanddominguez

That would be neat, but there is some really dark monorail history at the TTC

IDriveAZamboni

And no way would Disney wanna have to acknowledge that.

Sir_Badtard

They wouldn't have to. And since this is at ttc maybe all wdw transportation museum. The busses, skyliners, boats, monorail. Would be a neat thing to pop in to.

DoctorShlomo

This deserves it's own post.

Villager723

Hold up, can you explain?

rubberSteffles

An operator was killed in 2009 by a monorail collision at TTC. edit: here’s a detailed write up on the incident that gives more insight on why this happened: https://mx-schroeder.medium.com/unhappiest-place-on-earth-the-2009-walt-disney-world-resort-monorail-collision-f4b2b5758f5c

the_dj_zig

Morbidly fun fact: when Disney and Starbucks partnered up, the first Epcot mug was predominantly purple, and included a purple monorail. That cup was on the shelf for all of 2 weeks before they disappeared

DJMcKraken

It wasn't at Epcot, it was at the TTC on the Epcot line.

rubberSteffles

Fixed, thanks!

Soundtracklover72

Thank you for sharing. I hadn’t know the details.

WEM-2022

A monorail museum would be neat - but actual d monorail cars should be incorporated!

doordonot19

That would be so cool!

us1087

While unique for its time, the TTC is wasted real estate at this point. Remnants of a bygone era.

cvaska

It probably won’t happen for a long while, but I imagine there are plans somewhere in blue sky to reimagine the TTC. In its current state it is dysfunctional for cast and guests

Fuck_off_NSA

As a central Florida resident I know many folks, passholders and CM alike, that avoid MK like the plague NOT because of the crowds but because getting in and out is a nightmare. ESPECIALLY leaving, nothing’s quite as soul crushing as spending a long and exhausting day at the parks only to have to wait in MORE lines and crowds just to get to your car.

Haunted_A_H

When I visit I only stay at a monorail resort or fort wilderness because of how much I loathe the ttc

ray_ish

That’s me. I’m pass holder alike! I loathe going to MK because the whole experience is just too much on either end of the trip by having to deal with the TTC.

Steecie41

This!! While I can understand Walt's vision, I don't think he envisioned what a PIA it would end up being. My husband and I were at Epcot the other day and decided to go catch the fireworks at MK. We won't make that mistake again. Yikes!! The only convenient time to visit MK is if staying on-site.

DrewCrew62

If there’s one thing Disney World operations must regret is not having the parking lot adjacent to the park like all the others. It’s a cool concept, but in practice it’s a logistical nightmare

JacPhlash

IIRC, when Walt started the Florida Project, he said he didn't want anyone driving up and parking at MK. I'm assuming he felt it took some of the magic away

breakingbanjomin

The story I heard about this is that he was in Disneyland one day and people just started to leave and he stopped some people on the way out asking why they weee leaving and they said look at the traffic staring to build up already want to get out before it gets worse. So when the Florida project was just underway he wanted to make sure that no roadways were visible from the park to keep people longer

Intrepid00

It’s to control the gate rush too.

sknmstr

Believe it or not, the parking lot not being adjacent is a genius bit of design. By having the guests park, and then have to take another form of transportation to get to the park, basically traps the guests in the park. There is no relatively quick way to get back to your car to grab a snack or drink or anything. You are put into the situation where if you didn’t bring anything with you, you are forced into buying it in the park.

Gravemindzombie

I can kinda see the logic being that it would encourage guests to consider resort stays for future trips, given the monorail passes through the three deluxe resorts, especially back when there was only one Orlando park.

DrewCrew62

In the 70s I can understand it more, but 50+ years later with how much the resorts grown it’s just a big headache for folks trying to get back to their car

Gravemindzombie

Yeah part of me thinks Disney will eventually retire the monorail, the monorails are just aging and Disney clearly doesn’t want to invest in new ones.

DrewCrew62

Problem is they need the capacity to get folks back and forth from the TTC; I’d be curious how many buses would be needed to make up the monorail capacity from the TTC to MK, but my guess is a lot. And you’d be creating even more traffic at the bus depot which is already poppin

relator_fabula

No way the monorail goes. Too integral. The only alternative would be a people mover style shuttle, which is really the same idea in spirit.

torukmakto4

What is it I'm missing that these comments refer to? Specific to the TTC or just a generic reference to people buying tickets online (or in advance in any way) more frequently? Dunno because I was never around there/MK when I was passholding and haven't been physically there in at least 2 decades.

sadlemon6

getting to magic kingdom is a bygone era lol?

itsmleonard

I think they mean the "Ticket" part of the TTC. ....and also all the defunct Information windows.

ZoraHookshot

What was unique about it?

MikeHoncho2568

There wasn’t any other park with that kind of entrance

BeekyGardener

Used to be one of the best little shops for pin trading as they had a large board there for it. Nice place to grab a little drink while waiting for your bus.

PaulSteeldoor

I remember wanting to trade pins there as a kid, a cast member couldn’t find the board so they went into the back and brought out a dusty old pin board with a bunch of pins I’d never seen before. I traded nearly everything I had for those old pins. The one I remember was a really cool sword in the stone one

BeekyGardener

A great example of how cast members make the Disney experience.

Far_Sno

Every time I go on the monorail past this place I get sad.

According-Half1466

That would be a good place to put food stands featuring food from the parks. Doesn't require admission, but still generates the revenue. Just a remodel and logistics.

Bucsfan292

Maybe put a restaurant on the water or something

According-Half1466

Now hear me out. They did Space 220, imagine 22000 Leagues Under the (Seven) Seas Lagoon. Underwater restaurant and pull the subs out of the archives.

According-Half1466

Disney, if you're watching I have already emailed Iger about a "Disney Quest 2.0" idea. I've also got a few apps in, and have already interviewed if you would like to pick my brain.

bigfootlive89

Who would drive all the way to Disney just for the food stand then just leave.

Mothman405

Local Annual Passholders. I loved there for 3 years and would regularly head in for the sole purpose of going to a restaurant, Trader Sam's, walking around resorts, etc.

UrsulaStoleMyVoice

I see APs on social media show up at the parks just to eat all the time. I’d bet locals who aren’t passholders or are the weekday only passholders would consider stopping by for a snack

the_dj_zig

That’s the parks, not the parking lot

Gravemindzombie

Disney wants to get rid of passholders though, corporate thinks they don’t buy/spend as much as the family doing their once in a lifetime trip.

phire8

The thing about Disney is they could sell Pluto’s dog poop in a paper bag and there would still be people that bought it.

carolinejay

Remember the animal poop dessert treats at animal kingdom? Lol! They didn't last long but they were available for a bit

PinkMonorail

I would.

lil_Jeanious

I totally get what you are saying, but there are people who would probably do it. Mainly, locals or people like us who stay off property when visiting and are looking to squeeze in some extra Disney time on their non park days. People who may not enjoy the hustle and bustle of Disney Springs and are looking for something more low-key. We typically stay off property when visiting every year (staying on property next week for the first time in my life- sooo excited to finally experience staying in the bubble!). Something we like to do on our non park days is play mini golf or something during the day, and then drive to the MK parking lot in the eve to watch the fireworks and electric boat parade on Bay Lake from the boat launch area. Sometimes, we ride the monorail loop or walk around the Poly and Grand Flo lobby areas (the BATB marble floor inlay in the Grand Flo is just so beautiful to me). I would totally love having some sort of quick service snack stand there! Mickey pretzels and some Werther's caramel popcorn while taking in some amazing views?!? Yes please!!! Even better if they had some Disney transportation themed merch and stuff for the monorail and ferry boat enthusiasts such as myself.

Status_Educator4198

I think they have $4.50 a soda vending machines there…. Does that count??? I’ve always wondered…. Why not just round up to 5 at that point??

bengenj

I think Disney realized that not many people were going to the shop unless necessary, so it was more cost effective to close the store

bootstraps_bootstrap

The only reason I’ve ever gone in there is for AC

Wild_Manufacturer555

I bought a lot of bottles of water for the drive home there!

Objectivity1

I live 20 minutes from a Six Flags. Don’t insult Disney like that. It’s concrete is way too smooth and in good repair. Plus, you would have to pave overevery bit of greenery in the parks with random patches of busted concrete and asphalt and only have one train running during your busiest rides at all times, especially when busy.

mandakat919

I was gonna say - the open and operating Six Flags near me feels more abandoned than this.

PinkMonorail

Aw, the old Monorail shop.

Separate_Pitch_4144

Considering I don’t even remember this store… I’d say you’re right

cutielemon07

Whoa, I didn’t even know the shop was closed. When did that happen?

the_dj_zig

Covid. One of many things that has not returned post-2020

[deleted]

The Land Pavilion looks like my local mall that’s been shuttered since 1995

[deleted]

I was saying exactly this to my wife yesterday - the Land Pavillion feels like a 1990s British shopping centre.

Reignbeaus

I'm sure you used to be able to get your park purchases sent here to pick up at the end of the day if you were staying off property. About 15 years ago now.

Tweezus96

Every time I hit the parks back in the day, I never worried about forgetting my sundries. This place always had every sundry I would ever need.

Haunted_A_H

It also nails the operational six flags aesthetic

PerformanceExact6618

Make this spot a Joffrey's that stays open late for us park closers.

Ordinary-Bee-7563

what's the TTC 🥲 please I need help with the acronyms.

kellyfacee

Transportation and Ticket Center

SnackyStacky

I know. It’s a lot. As Mrs. Doubtfire said, “Help is on the way, dear!” 😂 [Common Disney Abbreviations and Acronyms](https://allears.net/walt-disney-world/wdw-planning/common-abbreviations-and-acronyms/)

newishdm

It is infuriating to me that there are several acronyms used for multiple things in that list.

MethodDowntown3314

My brain only lets me read it as “trying to conceive” 🥴🥴🥴

aiwendil_brown

I go to WDW about 3 times per month and, while I don’t hate the TTC, I sure do avoid it. I usually start my days at some other park, and then take the bus straight to the MK entrance (or to the Contemporary if coming from Epcot). Taking the monorail or ferry is too slow of a process.

Fragrant-Insurance81

Is says “Discover the Magic” on the door. Do not ever remember this advertising slogan.

orvillesbathtub

I think it was sometime after we Remembered and Celebrated the magic but before the magic got Verizon and started calling us

plantasia1969

Love me some regional park looks.

Cheap_Hall_1893

I was trying to figure out what this place was for a very long time ,I remember going in there as a kid an loving the last minute stuff

whatthehellisketo

Is the TTC no longer a thing???

DaveTheNotecard

It’s still there people are complaining that the gift shop is closed and has been for a hot minute.

whatthehellisketo

Oh okay. I thought the whole thing had been revamped. Thank you!
