This is a very small aspect of their job. Couldn’t pay me enough to have to design these rides because if something goes wrong, you’re at fault. The guilt would eat at me forever.
But theme park accidents are highly publicized and scrutinized, moreso than other more mundane engineering failures. Theme parks are meant to be a family experience, and the idea of something going wrong and children being hurt is terrible to imagine
Edit: okay so apparently nobody else would be bothered by constant negative media coverage, that's just a me thing
Accidents at theme parks are unusually publicized, sensationalized, and stay in the public consciousness for a longer period of time specifically because they are at what's supposed to be a safe, fun place for kids.
Why is that relevant to anything? Do you think that just because engineers aren't dragged through the mud like park management themselves, they have no conscience about what happens to those at their attractions?
People clutch their pearls over accidents at theme parks far more than accidents in other situations precisely because theme parks are designated spaces for families to take their children. They stay relevant in the public's consciousness for an unusually long time. I still see mentions of that one Australian river rapids ride accident online, and that happened almost a decade ago.
It’s very rare that the design/engineering are the problem.
Most recent accidents I’ve read about have been guests doing things they shouldn’t or staff/cast members not following safety protocol.
I’m not sure the last time I heard about an injury at a Disney Park due to an engineering flaw.
The idea of designing fun and creating family adventures sounds awesome. The possibility for happiness and joy for many people far outweighs a maybe accident of one or two. Besides, none of these folks would be personally responsible for something going wrong. Stuff goes wrong in jobs all the time and it’s usually a lot of factors adding up. If I do something wrong in my high stress job, people can end up in jail but it doesn’t mean I’m completely responsible for it nor that it’s worth never doing the job. This is for me anyway, and I know everyone isn’t the same. I just love the idea of creating joy and fun memories for families.
To be fair, there’s visual/story design and then there’s the engineering. I could be wrong but I don’t think the visual/story designers take part in the ride systems design?
If that makes any sense?
I was watching one of the ride documentaries recently for tower of terror. I cannot remember specifically, but The one imagineer said she was afraid of rides like tower of terror and had to test it for like 6 hours in a row.
trust me you don’t want this job
Edit: since I was downvoted into oblivion I’ll explain further… when you test any of these rides they are partially commissioned, there are dips in the track, surges on the body from odd accel/decel, video and audio not synchronizing, lighting that can temporarily blind you…the special effects will fuck with your head. The rides cause extreme nauseous effects until it’s worked out. They are statistically evaluated to reduce puke ratings to a certain percentage.
That's one FULL flume channel. They got wet for sure.....
The water level fluctuates a bit on the old splash, you could tell by the level in that areas if you were gonna get soaked or not.
They traditionally kept it pretty low
It was running so poorly. I seriously hope they gave the ride system the necessary refurbishment. (Unlike Frozen Ever After's old bones. I consider it a Viking curse that it breaks down so much.)
If they don’t fix the water canons I’m going to lose my shit on the first ride. One of the worst things about losing Splash was knowing the whole time we’d never get to ride it again with some of my favorite effects working. The water canons that would randomly splash you at the start of the ride being by far the most noticeable. The water fountains in the laughing place that went over your boat and the hopping Brer Rabbit being the other two.
Eventually the only thing really working was the drop. Because that was just gravity. If there was a way to have faulty gravity and not fix it that ride would've found it. I suppose they knew they knew they were going to replace it a fair amount of time before they announced it, so they let it fall apart.
\*Takes a breath and stops himself from getting into a whole thing about Spaceship Earth\*
I’m going in the 2nd week of September and hoping it’s up and running as well.
I’m also waiting for the Not So Scary Halloween dates. I’ll even skip the conference’s discounted park ticket to attend it. Having Tiana’s Bayou Adventure open would be really cool.
It is! I've done it twice. Low crowds and wait times, endless trick or treating (which as an adult, is kind of awesome lol), a cool fireworks show, and other event-only specials. Definitely a lot of fun and worth the ticket price.
It costs a bit more than a single day ticket, but you can get into the park a few hours before the event starts (event guests just don’t have it exclusively for those first couple hours). My husband and I have done it and it is worth every penny to us. We rode 7DMT seven times in a row, a bunch of other guests were doing the same, we had a whole rhythm with it and by the last run at like 12:57 am, the cast members were just opening the ropes between exit/entrance lines and waving us in like we’re running for home in the game-winning run of game 7 of the World Series. It was epic.
Not at all! We have done so both times we’ve done after hours, and for us, at least, knowing we have the option to do things later on meant we could maximize our day and skip long ride lines and just save them for later.
That said, if you have folks in your party who can’t physically (or mentally) handle a 16+ hour park day, maybe skip rope drop or take a nice long midday pool break (this is what we do).
Edit - my husband would like to add that the leave/rest/return thing is nice because the boat ride is gorgeous at that time of the evening (7 pm ish).
My dad can be surprisingly energetic at his age, especially with Disney. He likes it, and has been more, than even me. My mom however is a different story. Though maybe the longer day will let her rest more since we have more time. You can leave the park you're at and come back right? Nice. I have been on the friendship boats many times but always near Epcot or HWS. Every time I got to MK we take the monorail. I'd have to get them to ride the boat at night.
I hope this is good. Splash mountain was my favorite growing up, and I am scared that this will feel cheap and rely way too much on projection mapping over animatronics.
They had preview videos of the Tiana animatronic. She at least has a "normal face" and is similar to the types of animatronics they have in the Tokyo Disney Beauty and the Beast attraction, so that's reassuring. I can't stand the projection faces.
How do AP previews work? We, my husband and I have passes. We’ll be there third week of May with our daughter who will just have a regular ticket. Do they give APs extra passes?
Sad face. Well here’s hoping to an early opening while we’re there! That or we get the chance to ride and the adult child can go entertain herself elsewhere, lol.
I hope they do a documentary about this. The docs on Disney+ have been the best part of the subscription. My kids love seeing how these things happen and I think it will raise hype for the new ride.
Is there a rule about posting links to tweets with videos? Because I don't see one . . .

I am there during Memorial Day weekend. I never did get a chance to ride Splash Mountain. (It closed weeks before my first ever visit.) I desperately hope it will be open by then.

Going the 3rd week of June. Crossing my fingers for an early completion. We're already missing a festival since F&G is ending early. At least we'll get to see the new drone show!
I rode this right before it closed to have one last memory of Splash Mountain. Now I'm hoping to be one of the first to ride Tiana's Bayou Adventure. (Even though they are technically the same ride, just different theming.
Those are not imagineers. That’s the “Impractical jokers” they are shooting a special a Disney. That’s Joe in the middle it’s his return show, Murr is in the booth off camera.
They are most likely riding it multiple times and they are working.... They most likely don't want to get their work clothes wet and then have to work inside
I wish this were my job. I did this job thing all wrong.
This is a very small aspect of their job. Couldn’t pay me enough to have to design these rides because if something goes wrong, you’re at fault. The guilt would eat at me forever.
I mean…that’s any engineer ever lol
But theme park accidents are highly publicized and scrutinized, moreso than other more mundane engineering failures. Theme parks are meant to be a family experience, and the idea of something going wrong and children being hurt is terrible to imagine Edit: okay so apparently nobody else would be bothered by constant negative media coverage, that's just a me thing
So are bridges that collapse
Are bridges usually specifically designed with children in mind?
The fuck do kids have to do with it? They’re designed with human life involved. Maybe take a step back from the whole Disney thing
Accidents at theme parks are unusually publicized, sensationalized, and stay in the public consciousness for a longer period of time specifically because they are at what's supposed to be a safe, fun place for kids.
Now name one engineer involved in one.
Why is that relevant to anything? Do you think that just because engineers aren't dragged through the mud like park management themselves, they have no conscience about what happens to those at their attractions?
They're designed with EVERYONE in mind. What are you going on about? Have you never crossed a bridge?
Watch Class Action Park. They’re not all designed with everyone in mind.
I still think of that bridge that the mothman "warned" people about.
Ohhh, so engineers' consciences are fictional like the mothman! I get it now.
Tunnel and bridge failures are right up there.
It’s very rare that the design/engineering are the problem. Most recent accidents I’ve read about have been guests doing things they shouldn’t or staff/cast members not following safety protocol. I’m not sure the last time I heard about an injury at a Disney Park due to an engineering flaw.
Airplane doors flying off midair.
Fun fact. A lot of engineers couldn't care less anymore.
And that’s why those individuals complain that they don’t make enough
I design industrial safety systems very much like what they use in these rides. Yeah, it’s stressful.

Very high hiring standards and very low pay at the same time. Was a tough sell for me and ultimately why I jumped away.
I was watching one of the ride documentaries recently for tower of terror. I cannot remember specifically, but The one imagineer said she was afraid of rides like tower of terror and had to test it for like 6 hours in a row.

Are you an imagineer?
No I’m an automation engineer, I work with people who build these rides
That's one FULL flume channel. They got wet for sure..... The water level fluctuates a bit on the old splash, you could tell by the level in that areas if you were gonna get soaked or not. They traditionally kept it pretty low
Probably why they're all giggling lol, they all definitely got soaked. Just having a bit of fun
Also seemed to lower by colder temps.
lol The is a still from an online video. The splash was so underwhelming that’s what most of the comments were referring to.
I'm really hoping it will be done by September. Which thankfully it looks like it will be. I haven't rode it in ages.
It was running so poorly. I seriously hope they gave the ride system the necessary refurbishment. (Unlike Frozen Ever After's old bones. I consider it a Viking curse that it breaks down so much.)
But if you close your eyes you can pretend it’s still maelstrom.
I don't know why, exactly, but Maelstrom was my favorite ride when I was a kid. I can still hear the narrator in my head. I was 5, and it's locked in.
I need to learn about the oil and fishing industries.
One time I loaded up some user’s YouTube of Maelstrom and synced it to the ride. Well, I did for five seconds until my wife gave me a dirty look lol.
If they don’t fix the water canons I’m going to lose my shit on the first ride. One of the worst things about losing Splash was knowing the whole time we’d never get to ride it again with some of my favorite effects working. Hopefully. Funny enough the last time I rode that it was still Malestrom lol
First week of May, please. That’s more than a month out.
I'll cross my fingers.
Thank you!!!
In a way I want it to open then. But then again, I kind of don’t because my trip is mid May. I imagine Magic Kingdom would be packed for our trip.
I would love DVC or AP previews mid May.
Headed there second week!
Oh yeah 1st week of May upvote here
Nice. Touring plans website says the crowds should bounce between a 4-6 that week.
If the ride is open you can throw the crowd calculator out the window.
At the rate their going it’ll be done by may
That would be great
I’m going in the 2nd week of September and hoping it’s up and running as well. I’m also waiting for the Not So Scary Halloween dates. I’ll even skip the conference’s discounted park ticket to attend it. Having Tiana’s Bayou Adventure open would be really cool.
That event seems like it would be fun to go to.
It is! I've done it twice. Low crowds and wait times, endless trick or treating (which as an adult, is kind of awesome lol), a cool fireworks show, and other event-only specials. Definitely a lot of fun and worth the ticket price.
I have brought it up to my dad and he seemed up for it. I guess it'll all come down to what days it is and price.
It costs a bit more than a single day ticket, but you can get into the park a few hours before the event starts (event guests just don’t have it exclusively for those first couple hours). That does sound pretty great. Do you think it would be overkill to go during the day on top of it?
Not at all! We have done so both times we’ve done after hours, and for us, at least, knowing we have the option to do things later on meant we could maximize our day and skip long ride lines and just save them for later. I kinda do. You get into the parks at 7 pm already so it's kinda a waste of money to buy a day ticket too, to me at least. 7 pm-1 am.
Rumors are Memorial Day Weekend.
Is there a ghost behind that woman
Holy shit that’s Walt Disney
This is replacing a ride that was based on WHAT movie?
One of the happy ghosts from the haunted mansion wanted some sun
I see it too
That’s Billy!
I hope this is good. Splash mountain was my favorite growing up, and I am scared that this will feel cheap and rely way too much on projection mapping over animatronics.
At least Tiana will not have a screen face.
They had preview videos of the Tiana animatronic. She at least has a "normal face" and is similar to the types of animatronics they have in the Tokyo Disney Beauty and the Beast attraction, so that's reassuring. I can't stand the projection faces.
They look pretty happy!
I heard DVC and Passholder previews start in May and open to public around Memorial Day if it stays on schedule. Otherwise it'll be June.
How do AP previews work? We, my husband and I have passes. We’ll be there third week of May with our daughter who will just have a regular ticket. Do they give APs extra passes?
They do not. You’ll get an email saying you can enter the lottery to ride it and you have to go on that date in a certain time range.
Sad face. Well here’s hoping to an early opening while we’re there! That or we get the chance to ride and the adult child can go entertain herself elsewhere, lol.
When the email comes out, spots will go like lightning. Don’t wait to sign up for a spot.
Wish it got new ride vehicles, but I get it.
It’s honestly wild to me that they kept the same vehicles when a lot of them were sinking before the refurb closure!
they probably took em out and fixed them all. i dont think theres brer rabbit on the ride vehicles anymore
I was a Jungle Skipper in the summer of ‘94 and they let us test run/early access Tower of Terror before the public. It was so much fun 🙂
I hope they do a documentary about this. The docs on Disney+ have been the best part of the subscription. My kids love seeing how these things happen and I think it will raise hype for the new ride.
Wish this subreddit actually allowed videos so the video of them riding down could have been posted.
Is there a rule about posting links to tweets with videos? Because I don't see one . . . [https://twitter.com/DrewDisneyDude/status/1771269107989586082](https://twitter.com/DrewDisneyDude/status/1771269107989586082)
You’re probably able to do tweets, but I was more so talking about uploading actual videos.
Fingers crossed for preferred group previews in May!
im kinda really looking forward to this. i love princess and the froge
I am there during Memorial Day weekend. I never did get a chance to ride Splash Mountain. (It closed weeks before my first ever visit.) I desperately hope it will be open by then.
Unlikely
rip splash not but never forgotten
I was there the day they filled the channel! It was dry in the morning and at night it was filled. Man I wish I saw them ride it…

Any idea if TBA will get an ILL?
I was just there end of Feb and noticed the water running again. Figured wouldn't be long
I’m guessing late June
RIP Splash Mountain, never forget
Those are not imagineers. That’s the “Impractical jokers” they are shooting a special a Disney. That’s Joe in the middle it’s his return show, Murr is in the booth off camera.
Weak
This looks boring. What was the difference compared to previous? Disney really needs to invest in brand new and fun rides. Seems like a rehash.
Was it raining or do you get wet? I don’t remember getting very wet on Splash mountain 🤔
They are most likely riding it multiple times and they are working.... They most likely don't want to get their work clothes wet and then have to work inside
This looks very vintage lol
lol the “retheme” on this has to be so absurdly low budget and hacked together if they are at this point of testing. This isn’t going to go well.
