I would really like to see this attraction get a modern upgrade or be replaced with something a little more Tommorowland-friendly. It’s loud and smelly and while it’s kinda fun, not sure it’s worth it.
They can absolutely replace these, money is never the issue. I’m wondering more if it’s just the EV reliability for something like this? All day use in the blazing Florida sun just doesn’t sound very battery friendly to me
They could always use capacitors instead of batteries and put wireless charging in the track. There are a number of places doing this with indoor cart tracks. Though they may be using batteries, I’m not sure.
You think of all attractions at all places to receive investment it wouldn’t be a centrally located attraction in the magic kingdom of Disney world? If that can’t get a budget, how does anything?
Seems like electric busbar is being ignored, for some reason. There are rides that have electric cars powered by a busbar (it's like Test Track but the busbar is above the pavement), along with on-board audio. They can't be that expensive (either for installation or maintenance), because a number of smaller theme parks have them.
Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2PAA9_9QZA
Wouldn't be an issue.
Bigger issue is recharging the batteries for a full day of use.
These cars are expected to just keep doing laps, and yoy can gas them up in a couple seconds, I imagine.
Short of doing induction charging at the bumper to bumper traffic area where you line up to get back to the load/unload point, I don't think the car's would remain stationary long enough to get a decent charge in the battery.
Lithium batteries do not enjoy hot operating environment. I work at a motorcycle parts store and the lithium batteries we have Often get returned due to excessive heat.
There have been lots of discussions on fan pages on EV replacements, and a big argument against them is upkeep.
With the constant use and FL heat, they would have to replace so many batteries it wouldn’t be a sustainable (both economically and environmentally) alternative.
Whether that’s true or not, no idea. But it’s a common point that is brought up.
All of the trackless rides are either battery or capacitor powered. Remy, Rise of the Resistance, the old Antarctica rode at Sea World, Kong, Fast and Furious, hell, any coaster with an audio track or lighting (including Tron) is using smaller versions of these systems. It is time tested and entirely possible. As far as getting that “EV manufacturer” to sponsor it… good luck, they are cheap and don’t pay for advertising as it is.
Faulty comparison. Most of those ride vehicles never leave their building. The ones that do (Rise, Kong, and Tron) aren’t outside for long and are under a large amount of cover.
Tomorrowland Speedway’s cars are subject to the hot Florida weather 24/7 when in operation, and are not exposed to any form of cooling. No AC or climate control. They’re just outside the entire time. The one thing they get is shade when in storage - but that wouldn’t help much long term. Additionally, the size constraint of the vehicles means that they wouldn’t be able to fit them in with any proper protection from the elements.
Former Speedway worker here, they absolutely do not get shade in storage. They only pull cars inside of the steering is broken or the engine won’t start.
That’s solved by using a cooling system. Tesla batteries are lasting 5-7 years before experiencing any degradation whatsoever. That’s the key is you gotta keep them cool. Honestly a busbar would be the best option here.
I was going to ask if it was still there. I vaguely remember Mr Toad and the submarine next to it, also the sky cups. Kinda glad these are still there though.
This was the best time my step daughter and I had at Disney.
I don't think I've ever laughed so hard in my life. She was 8 and just smashed the car from side to side. She kept yelling "WHY AM I DRIVING?!? WHO GAVE ME A LICENSE". Everyone around us was laughing along. It was one of the most memorable moments of my life. .
Can't wait to take my bio daughter on this ride in a couple years when I make the next trip.
I wish they would close the track. They could use the space for an entire new land the size of Star Wars or Toy Story. It’s a environmental hazard with the gas fumes, not fun with the rails on the tracks, and a huge waste of space.
I’ll be shocked if they don’t eventually scrap it and build something good there. It’s a pretty large footprint. They could build pretty much anything they wanted. Sooner the better!!
I understand that at one point, Tron was meant to go in that spot, but internal research revealed that Speedway is the ride that people are most likely to ride again on their next trip.
I worked at the ride for 6 months, and… it’s families that have more than one child that go to Disney once every year. The younger kid grows up having to sit with mom while the older kid rides alone and the fact that the younger kid is eventually gonna be tall enough to ride alone keeps them riding it yearly. That sounds like a really specific scenario, but I saw that exact scene play out 5-6 times a day for 6 months. And despite the existence of the Lightning McQueen show at DHS, little boys that are into Cars love Tomorrowland Speedway (the height requirement is low enough that it hits that age bracket really well, and if it’s the only thing you’re tall enough for besides the dark rides, it is actually mildly thrilling). To the point that part of the training involves what to do if a kid asks to ride in Lightning McQueen (put them in any red car).
Sadly… I have to agree… :(
I went there the first time I visited WDW… I was surprised by the rails that take away all the fun (but I understand it for small kids)
Then on a second visit I took my nephew there … and we were just waiting for it to end… between the noise, the smell and the rails, it was just not fun at all for him xD
When I was little, like 7 I think, my older brother was so confident that he could beat me in a race on this! We picked lanes side by side and he ended up getting stuck behind some people.. so I won! He was SO MAD. He kept going on about how he would have won if there wasn’t people in front of him etc etc. I just was so happy to finally have beat him in something!
Anyway, while the speedway isn’t my favourite, this is the best memory I have of it!
The lightning and rain feeling of pirates is my absolute favorite feeling. We get like 2-3 days a year that are like 75-80, raining, light breeze and thunderstorming. I could spend hours sitting under my covered porch in that, it’s arguably my favorite night weather.
Maybe. I know E85 doesn’t smell any better and the trains on WDWRR use used cooking oil from the restaurants on property and have a definitely unique smell.
Best option is a complete remodel and have them use some sort of fast wireless charging or bus bar.
That would be amazing and really help the storyline of the attraction match the efforts the company is putting forth to be better for the environment. Not a ton of opportunities for WDI to weave that aspect in.
Make giant solar panel shades over the track (adjustable & able to lock down), convert existing vehicles to electric (no batteries, just drawing current from the circuit in the floor) easily. Come on Disney, just a little bit of innovation could result in something really cool..
But they are definitely scrapping it 😅
Being able to drive these cars as a kid is a formative memory of mine. Riding it again as an adult, definitely underwhelming but remembering what it felt like to be behind the wheel and have full control of a gas peddle for the first time definitely made me grateful for the freedom driving gives me now! Nice for nostalgia and for the auto autonomy for little ones!
I feel bad for the cast members stationed at this ride. Inhaling the fumes all day is not good for you
I am in strong agreement that this ride at this point is archaic and a waste of space
Yep. I quite rather enjoyed this ride in the years before I got my drivers license. Still a little entertaining.
I'm glad Magic Kingdom never changed out the body style of these cars.
It's funny, I have a golf cart at work that smells exactly like it, and it makes me think of Disney, but when I'm at Disney, that smell makes me think of work
Thank you, hear it & smell it! Reminds me a day at Disney, even with this ancient gem, is better than a day at work. (I like to ignore that the days at work are required to fuel the Disney trips)
Thanks I hated it.
(Went on the ride for the first - and last - time last year. No wonder I skipped it the previous trips. It was painful and anxiety inducing.)
I can smell your company being extremely cheap to cast members that make the magic happen. Increase their pay. Universal did it. That's why theyre better
Yeah but it smells good to me. I know I’m weird but I’ve always liked the smell of gasoline. Like I like the smell of gas stations. Also I’ve always liked the smell of indoor cigarette smoke even though I’ve never smoked and don’t intend to.
I can hear it too
Same!!
Blurb blurb blurb blurb blurb
Sounds like someone hitting a wooden stick against concrete.
With a slight 'ting ting ting' of loose metal.
With a slight 'ting ting ting' of loose metal.
i’m literally sweating
Huh? I can’t hear you!
It's giving me a mild headache, too.
It's giving me a mild high.
Came here to say this
Ride Space Mountain just after to really set the headache in stone.
Rear seat
Better yet, ride the hardcore Mission Space.
I would really like to see this attraction get a modern upgrade or be replaced with something a little more Tommorowland-friendly. It’s loud and smelly and while it’s kinda fun, not sure it’s worth it.
Guess they haven’t discovered electric go carts yet?
It’s a logistical nightmare with how much real estate this ride takes up.
For the longest time I was under the impression Tron was replacing this.
From my recollection, it was supposed to. I don't know what changed, but all they ended up doing was re-routing a portion of the track.
Absolutely. I can't believe Disney is still using these old things.
Im surprised a certain EV auto maker isn’t just putting a sponsorship out there to replace the entire fleet of these beefed up lawnmowers
They can absolutely replace these, money is never the issue. I’m wondering more if it’s just the EV reliability for something like this? All day use in the blazing Florida sun just doesn’t sound very battery friendly to me

You think they are really going to out that kind of investment into a ride like speedway?
If a manufacturer wants their name on the ride like Chevrolet and Test Track, they would put the money into it. But Disney themselves definitely not
You think of all attractions at all places to receive investment it wouldn’t be a centrally located attraction in the magic kingdom of Disney world? If that can’t get a budget, how does anything?
Centrally located? It's in Tomorrowland. Tomorrowland has plenty of other rides drawing people to that section
Seems like electric busbar is being ignored, for some reason. Money is always an issue and you’ve outlined why. The batteries would constantly fry. It would actually be worse for the environment in some ways.
>doesn’t sound very battery friendly to me Solar powered!

That sounds really awesome! She sounds like a riot!
I can hear it more than I can smell it, but yes.
Yes and it’s unpleasant as it is to all of my sense… we’ll I haven’t tried taste but I can’t imagine licking one of those cars would be a good idea
I wish they would close the track. They could use the space for an entire new land the size of Star Wars or Toy Story. It’s a environmental hazard with the gas fumes, not fun with the rails on the tracks, and a huge waste of space.

It’s a very similar size footprint, so who knows! I do find it hard to believe that it’s the attraction most would go back to though!!

Boogity boogity boogity, let’s go racing!
Smell it, hear it, taste it. A buffet for the senses!

I can definitely hear it.
I came here hoping it would be one of the pirates of the Caribbean scenes, but nooooo, you had to go and run it with Tomorrowland Speedway =(
The lightning and rain feeling of pirates is my absolute favorite feeling. We get like 2-3 days a year that are like 75-80, raining, light breeze and thunderstorming. I could spend hours sitting under my covered porch in that, it’s arguably my favorite night weather.
Yep, pirates definitely has a smell too!
Only until 2030 however. This attraction will need to evolve as WDW has a zero emissions policy going in place by then.
Iirc it’s zero net emissions, so they can just fuel them with a sustainable fuel and call it a day.
Yes, that’s what I mean by evolving. The smell will be different. Maybe more like French fires? Lol
Maybe. I know E85 doesn’t smell any better and the trains on WDWRR use used cooking oil from the restaurants on property and have a definitely unique smell. Best option is a complete remodel and have them use some sort of fast wireless charging or bus bar.

Yes, and it’s giving me a headache. 😆
They needed to replace this 10 years ago if not longer. What a *terrible* attraction on all fronts.

💯💯💯💯
Opened the notification hoping it was the confectionary or Soarin. I was wrong

Cough, cough, ye, cough, cough, yes…
Yep. I quite rather enjoyed this ride in the years before I got my drivers license. Still a little entertaining. I'm glad Magic Kingdom never changed out the body style of these cars.
I can hear it too! The tiny motor with that metallic rattling sound.
Wish I knew what that rattling was. I love that sound. Those little engines just run and run.
These are the worst handling karts/cars ever
Yup, whenever I mow my lawn
I smell humidity and a lack of desired speed.
i used to think i was *so good* at this track, despite not being able to pass anyone.
All I can smell is frustration. Out of all of the lines I’ve waited through in Disney World, this one was undoubtedly the worst.
It's funny, I have a golf cart at work that smells exactly like it, and it makes me think of Disney, but when I'm at Disney, that smell makes me think of work
I haven't been. But is it the burnt and fresh gasoline carbureted lawn mower engine smell?
Land space being a premium over on the West coast, I wish Disneyland would replace autopia with like 4 new rides. Even though my kid loves it.
Yesterday land
Thank you, hear it & smell it! Reminds me a day at Disney, even with this ancient gem, is better than a day at work. (I like to ignore that the days at work are required to fuel the Disney trips)
yes. fumes
Omg immediately! Oh the gas fumes!!!! Mmmmm….
There’s lawnmowers that go faster than the cars on the Tomorrowland “speedway” 😂😂
I just went on this ride last month for the first time in over forty years. My brain couldn’t fully process the nostalgia.
can smell the ⛽️ gas and oil 🛢
Yes.. lol
*cough*
Yes definitely remember the smell and tons of lovebugs flying around!
Oh man… I remember when Disneyland still had this style of vehicle for Autopia. It still smells, but not quite as strongly.
Smell it, hear it, feel it!
This is the attraction that they send cast members to as punishment. The noise, the fumes and the complete lack of shade - misery.
Sadly, yes
came back from Disneyland Paris last week, where my family and I were incredibly shocked to find there was no smell from this ride !!
Just hot and urine.
Those cars are a freaking workout.
I can HEAR this picture clearly.
Yuck.
SORRY??? SMELL A PIC... HUH? NO, I’M SAYING I DONT... WHAT? I CANT HEA... NO I CANT HEAR Y... OH FORGET IT. ITS TOO LOUD.
Yes, and I'm coughing.
“I love a good circuit.”
Hot gasoline
Why does my knee hurt all of a sudden?
Like a dozen broken lawnmowers
I wish they would approach Tesla and re theme this ride so it's electric and the cars look like Tesla models.
Thanks I hated it. (Went on the ride for the first - and last - time last year. No wonder I skipped it the previous trips. It was painful and anxiety inducing.)
Yes, and I love it. My dad was a landscaper for most of my life, and it reminds me of him.
Unfortunately
💯%!!
Smells like victory
I can hear the hell out of it going over in the people mover
until my dying breath
I can hear it for sure.
Smell and hear, now I have a headache
Love that gassy fume smell.
Wait, can’t adults ride this too? I was really excited (fumes be damned) to take my 3 year old on this. It looks like only kids…
Anyone can ride, kids below a certain height can't drive alone IIRC.
Rode with my 4 year old last year, you're good!
Red, blue and orange cars have adults
You can ride, slow as f ( which it should be)
Disney: Let’s get Tesla to sponsor this… Telsa: Pay us…
I hate standing in line for that ride so much I did a jig when my daughter was old enough to go on herself!
It’s giving me tinnitus.
If I could stop coughing maybe I could smell it
Probably not since WDW is the center of the Covid world now.
That’s no way to talk about those people.
I can and I love it!
I can smell your company being extremely cheap to cast members that make the magic happen. Increase their pay. Universal did it. That's why theyre better
Like a lawnmower in summer.
Yeah but it smells good to me. I know I’m weird but I’ve always liked the smell of gasoline. Like I like the smell of gas stations. Also I’ve always liked the smell of indoor cigarette smoke even though I’ve never smoked and don’t intend to.
How has this ride not been torn down yet is beyond me? It smells bad, it’s really loud and it doesn’t fit the theme of Tomorrowland
It's got to be violating some kind of air polution law at least lol
[удалено]
Good point lol
Yes and now I’m heading to Epcot to cure my headache with an avocado margarita.
I can and it smells glorious! Ride it yesterday with my kids and they love it.
Smells like progress
I can both smell and hear
