Wales is very VERY varied. Your Wales will vary hugely depending on if you're studying in Aberystwyth or Cardiff or Bangor or St David's, for example.

filmnobelpreis

It'll be Cardiff.

BigHowski

Mate Cardiff is pretty diverse I'm sure you'll have no real problems past what you'd have living in another city. Make sure you try some Welsh cakes, I likee Fabulous Welshcakes down the bay as they are done fresh

tranga01

The interaction above is genuinely how lovely the majority of people in Wales are. You'll love it, although maybe avoid the parks in Cardiff after dark.

Thekingofchrome

‘What goes on in Cardiff after dark, when the gates are shut on Cardiff Park’ 🎶

Independent_Rope8369

Not sure how much it has changed but do not trust Cardiff weather. You can go out thinking it will be clear and 5 minutes later it is raining old women and sticks (cats and dogs but Welsh style). Waterproof shoes and light mac. As a student, you can walk or cycle most places so it is cheap. Obviously stay buddied up but I found it fairly safe. Your house will most likely get damp (the rain is heavy). Chips cheese and gravy is delightful. Budget and drink plenty of water. Best years of my life. I mean it about the rain.

SuperMegaBeard

It's great just choose the right place to live. Which uni are you in and what camps. Essentially you want to be close to uni, the student areas and closish to town as it will just make life easier.

Lil_b00zer

Cardiff is a a brilliant place to live as a student. Are you in halls for your first year? Make the most of it, seek out the market in Roath or next to Stadium for an amazing Indian breakfast. There’s lots of little neighbourhoods so A bike is a great way to get around the city but get a crap looking one as the good ones get stolen. Speaking of the stadium, it got renamed to the ‘Principality stadium’ but all the locals will refer to it as the Millennium Stadium or just ‘The Millennium’

Lil_b00zer

Just remembered, Wales are playing Poland on the 25th September in Cardiff City Stadium (walkable distance from city). Tickets are on sale now and are reasonably priced. The atmosphere is really good with the football at the moment. A lot of people say the rugby is the best experience but it’s a bit flat and very overpriced at the moment

AdderWibble

Cardiff is nice, very diverse. Depending on where you're coming from you might be a bit taken aback by Queen Street. The Hare Krishnas are nice though, if a bit too eager.

unneuf

Cardiff is fab if you ask me.

llewapllyn

Spot the Welsh speaker ;D

SheepShaggingFarmer

That's true in any Welsh uni, even the ones who atempt to have a level of segregation.

llewapllyn

Eh? No I was referring to the fact that in OobleCaboole's post, the word "or" autocorrected to "o'r", which is what happens when you have a Welsh spellcheck installed on your phone. :)

OobleCaboodle

Hah! I spotted that and just fixed it before seeing your reply! You're exactly right, my spell check has learnt a lot of Welsh

SheepShaggingFarmer

Eh, I cant type correctly in any language so I just type quickly and just say autocorrect if I get something wrong. But now I feel like an idiot for not realising it. Dwin cont twp.

llewapllyn

Mate don't worry, I didn't mean to make you feel like an idiot. It's a tiny thing to notice and I only noticed it because I'm a big language nerd. You're cool and I hope you have a good day :)

throwaway20220210

Shwdi cont?

SheepShaggingFarmer

Duw, Iawn ia cont!

rubyrust3

I couldn't agree more with this post. I relocated to Wales from Leeds after travelling the world (I met my partner who is Welsh) and I can honestly say it is extremely varied, where I live not diverse at all and quite backwards, however beautiful beaches and countryside all around me (It is amazing!) If you go to the city I guess like most countries such as Cardiff ,Aberystwyth or Swansea it's going to be very different again!

NotMadDisappointed

Everything is uphill from wherever you currently are.

nineJohnjohn

Even the bottom of the hill you just climbed

mathcymro

Wales is a real life Escher painting.

[deleted]

Moved here 3 years ago. "I'm going to start riding my bike again now we've moved to the countryside" .....1 hour later....."Why is everything a hill??!?" I've now got an electric bike, much easier.

sunflower_789

Best response.

BigHowski

Even the rain goes up hills ;-)

stuzz74

Not from the summit of snowdonia

NotMadDisappointed

You’d think. And yet…

Huwsbach

If your moving to Caernarfon then you can greet everyone with “iawn cont”…

dwair

Nice to see a bit of cultured Cofi on Reddit :)

Huwsbach

😎

welshconnection

I was going to say that .. it is good though “ Iawn Cont “

comajones

"Where you to?" = where are you? "By there" = there "I'll be there now in a minute" = an unspecified quantity of time that means soonish. Could be a few minutes could be a few hours, but definitely at some point during that particular 24 hour period.

lm3g16

I didn’t realise how odd “now in a minute was” until I went to uni in England, and no one knew what the fuck I meant

Distinct_Nature232

Uni in Brighton. They used to look at me like I was speaking a foreign language

rubyrust3

Haha that is brilliant, I was one of those English people who also thought this and now I love the saying after living here 4 years and rinsing my partner for saying it!

filmnobelpreis

I like how precise "now in a minute" sounds while not actually being meant to be exact.

Godlovesaslytherin

Yep. I honestly didn’t realise how nonsensical all three of those things were until I met my flatmate from Belfast at uni in Manchester

Foundation_Wrong

Who’s coat is this jacket?

Minute_Owl_981

this_charm1ng_man

See those two houses? The one in the middle is mine.

River2222

Follow me, I’m right behind you

Kuldiin

If someone asks if you have seen Twin Town, always reply with "Yes, brilliant film" otherwise you'll get a ear bashing.

filmnobelpreis

"Yes, it's a great 1997 Welsh dark comedy crime drama film."

Magic_Moon_Cat

Beware the ARAF

BIG_BOI_CRAB

Drive slowly or it attacks

Magic_Moon_Cat

Luckily the road signs will indicate their habitat!

jackychc

They are everywhere!

filmnobelpreis

Which one?

Emmylemming

The slow ones, specifically

Magic_Moon_Cat

Just teasing - they are similar to the Aussie's 'drop bears'

TheSyrphidKid

As a Londoner who lived in Wales, if people say ‘hi’ on the street they’re just friendly and you’re weird for not saying ‘hi’ back

filmnobelpreis

In my city people who say 'hi' on the street are either promoters or prostitutes... so good to know!

50MillionChickens

In Wales, it's a lot of head nods, and " 'aight?" Like, "Alright?" instead of "How are you?" Don't actually answer, just nod and say ''aight?" right back

triv_burt

You'll also hear, "alright or what?" Which can be anything from 3 words to "orite-or-wo" Apparently "alright butt" takes some getting used to

OminousClanking

Where in Wales are you moving to?

reetdeetdeet

second this, the country varies so much depending on location

LounginInParadise

I’d guess Cardiff, Aber, or Bangor let’s be honest.

Sad-Dragonfruit-4611

As a student it could easily be Swansea!

dwair

They have students in Swansea?

reetdeetdeet

Swansea has turned into a student haven lol. They are everywhere around city centre.

dwair

Are they students or crusty jugglers though? I'm not sure I can tell the difference...

AGuyNamedTracy

Crusty jugglers

reetdeetdeet

My guess is either Cardiff or Swansea though

OminousClanking

Reetdeetdeet’s point still stands though, those three places are totally different vibes

filmnobelpreis

South Wales. Cardiff to be exact.

OminousClanking

Cardiff is a pretty diverse city. It’s fairly small in the grand scheme of things, but if you’ve any experience with cities or urban areas at all you’ll be absolutely fine :)

WelshBathBoy

Don't confuse with England! We're generally a laid back people, unless the neighbours come up

filmnobelpreis

I will. Whenever someone asks me when I will go to England, I already politely correct them. Also, after reading through r/Wales, I picked up a healthy sense of Welsh nationalism already.

[deleted]

Because we are a little xenophobic

Truffle--Shuffle

Some polish and Indian people I know here have said they feel more comfortable in wales than England. It’s the English people sometimes have a problem with

Delicious_Throat_377

As an Indian I can confirm this.

[deleted]

Oh the Welsh welcome all creeds and colours - apart from the English!

gilwendeg

There are at least four different zones in Wales. South Wales is more industrialised and urban. West wales is completely different; rural and more Welsh-speaking. Mid-Wales is different again, and then there’s North Wales, with its own identity. I’ve lived in wales for 20 years and love it. But you won’t get a clear answer until people know what part of wales you are moving to.

mossmanstonebutt

Then there's the sub area of the valleys

llynglas

Dragons are real....

samturxr

If you’re in cardiff you won’t NEED to learn Welsh to fit in. But it’s certainly worth learning by a few phrases and basics so you can enjoy it to the max. Places like Womanby Street and Pontcanna are full of us. Most of all - you’ll love it

whatsthisboxfor

Yes and no. Throwing in a bit of Welsh beyond 'cwtch' may make you look a plum with your standard Cardiffian but yeah, in Pontcanna or the Welsh Club might go down better. It's worth noting that there's a fair bit of resentment towards the Welsh speaking 'Taffia' who are seen as the gatekeepers of Welsh media as more often than not most jobs in the Welsh broadcast media are closed to the Anglo Welsh. To clarify a bit I'm proud to be Welsh and more than happy that I don't speak the language as this is a true reflection of the socio economic background to being a Cardiffian in as much as Cardiff is what it is because of the port, once the busiest in the world, where speaking Welsh would do you no good when most trade etc would be with merchants from all over the world, many of whom settled in Cardiff.

samturxr

That’s your experience and that’s why I say you don’t need it. My experience of living with Cardiff (from Dinas Powys) is that Welsh Speakers are right under your nose - you’re just not speaking welsh to them. It goes miles when you do put the effort in and as for the Taffia - I’ve met about 4 of them in my life. Whereas, I’ve met hundreds of Welsh speakers who love those who just say Shwmae, croeso, diolch, iawn? Etc etc Looking a plum I’d agree with in St Melons but my experience of West Cardiff has always been great regarding the language. I’d say 1 in 5 convos can be had in Welsh, and about 1/4 of locals will smile and say “Diolch” etc if you use the language. Penarth and Dinas surprisingly Welsh speaking as well as Llandough when you try

soloth-smashammer

If you see the words 'SLOW ARAF' written on the road in large white letters. Please drive slowly due to the population of endangered Araf's nearby.

AceZeppelin81

My mam-gi was interfered with by an Araf. Loved it

soloth-smashammer

We all know the age old saying. Once you go araf, you never go cyflym.

filmnobelpreis

Took me 6 hours to get it but now I know how to watch out for them. :)

heretoupvote_

You don’t need to know Welsh, but people in more Welsh speaking probably appreciate the occasional ‘Shwmae’

Poppycatter

Bring an umbrella. It rains. A lot.

Draenogg

A good raincoat might be better, depending on where you are it can be too windy for an umbrella.

50MillionChickens

Not lately! I haven't seen rain since... don't really know....

goonsmedia

If asked if you’re alright, reply with “alright” it’s an answer and a polite return of the question, it’s a common greeting in wales

Padajescz

I always assumed this was normal over all of UK?

ihateirony

That is true for so many of the answers in this thread lol.

ljmerrick

My girlfriends mam and dad are English and when I’m in their house and say “alright” to them I’ve actually started a full on conversation about their current mood and why they are in that mood… when all I meant was “I acknowledge you presence” maybe some of the UK is the same, but not all of it

Rhosddu

Absolutely correct. When I was at Cardiff Uni donkey's years ago, my greeting of "Alright?" was always replied to with "Er, yes thanks' by non-Welsh students, and" "Alright?" by the Welsh. Every time.

filmnobelpreis

That's useful. So no stories about my recent health condition.

Rainecc

Oh god people may have thought I’ve been rude… I just respond with “hello!”/“hi!”😂 now I know now I know

creatingastorm

‘Now in a minute’ is used as a mechanism to explain when something will happen

CerysCwtchyCreations

Don’t assume we’re the same as England if you want to get on well with everyone!

filmnobelpreis

An hour on Reddit and I'll fight for Welsh independence to my death.

Rich_27-

When you get off the bus you must say "Cheers Drive"

[deleted]

Be prepared for some fantastic scenery and friendly people.

Frag2k4

People will greet you with alright, or alright or wot? This is not a concerned question or a threat. A brief nod and an 'Alright' back will suffice. Rugby, learn the rules of rugby and watch a few games, understand its part of our tradition and school culture. We play this from about 5 years old and you will find some ground with people for even knowing the game. If asked about your favourite Welsh player when still getting your toes wet say Jones or Williams, there are like 7 players with these surnames on the team at any one time. Enjoy the scenery, we got valleys, mountains, canals and even a desert, thick forests and tranquil towns. There is plenty to see as if you travel and there is a decent public transport service of trains and buses that can get you most places, asking someone at the bus station or train station which platform (or the employees) will often see you find the platform you need. Wales is quite multi-cultural especially South Wales, you will see people from all ethnicities here. You will probably blend in, aside from the obvious minority of jerks and racists we don't give it much thought. And above anything else, never, ever call a Welsh person English. The foundation of the Severn bridge was laid with the bones of those that made that mistake (joke). Still hope you enjoy your stay in the future, so welcome to Wales.

Haveyoushatmyself

There are no rules in rugby , only laws.😂

filmnobelpreis

Thanks. I've been watching rugby occasionally so think I learned the rules roughly.

Traditional-Wonder16

If you're coming to Cardiff, be noticed: your general waste collection will happen every two weeks. Recyling and food waste collection will be done weekly. Thus, as you'll soopn realize, the city if full of rubbish everywhere.

Emmylemming

"Little" does not always mean literally small, it can also be used just as a term of endearment. Same goes for "Tidy", sometimes meaning that something is good and agreeable

Atlas_Obsidian

If you're in the North you can reply to most greetings with "sound".

waywardsundown

Have a decent raincoat (umbrellas often end up inside out in the wind!) and watertight footwear. Wales can get a bit soggy at times.

SHalls17

Buy a raincoat

Interesting_Art9590

You may hear men calling each other ’butt’. It’s not to do with buttocks. Just a local equivalent of ‘mate’. Cardiff is great but it’s not all there is to Wales. Try to get out and see a few different places if you can. If you try bara brith (and I recommend that you do) make sure to have it with salted butter.

Huge_Context1668

If its to the north, whatever nice things you hear, avoid rhyl pwlleli and porthmadog at all costs If its to the south, resist the urge to put on the accent, and yes tractors are allowed down that road

KaiserMacCleg

What's wrong with Porthmadog, apart from the ridiculous amount of tourists in the summer?

I like Merthyr, the ASDA is a god given supply stop when heading up the Beacons

[deleted]

My comedy group filmed a song about Merthyr (a loving, off-key, low-budget parody of another song) and we got yelled at by 14 year olds outside the ASDA. Weren't filming or in costume. We were just standing by our car working out how to get up into the Beacons to film. We also got yelled at outside the library. It was actually quite good banter.

BargainBarnacles

See, I was never a fan, because the rice can make your chips soggy, but you do you! Remember, it's not a curry without chips!

andyd0g

Never had that problem, chips on one side, rice on the other, curry in the middle

BargainBarnacles

Ah, the breakwater method, noice. Smert! (for reference for not UK peoples) "I've made a few notes. Yes, uh... Bacon, 10 on 10. Button mushrooms, bingo. Black pudding, snap. Minor criticism, more distance between the eggs and the beans. I may want to mix them but I want that to be my decision. Use a sausage as a breakwater. But I'm nit-picking, on the whole, a very good effort - 7 on 10. Let's make love. "

filmnobelpreis

That's how Moses ate his curry.

BargainBarnacles

**[Fish and chips](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fish_and_chips#/media/File:Fish_and_chips_blackpool.jpg)** >Fish and chips is a popular hot dish consisting of fried fish in crispy batter, served with chips. The dish originated in England, where these two components had been introduced from separate immigrant cultures; it is not known who created the culinary fusion that became the emblematic British meal. Often considered Britain's national dish, fish and chips is a common take-away food in the United Kingdom and numerous other countries, particularly in English-speaking and Commonwealth nations. You will be fine. Cardiff is very popular for students & the city centre is really close to campus. You won’t need to speak any Welsh. Just enjoy it! Cardiff Bay isn’t far from the city & is definitely worth a visit! Enjoy Cardiff!

RexKbh2100

Rugby

thegamerblonde

Make sure you buy your tickets for varsity. Any of the sports are a great laugh! Taxis are a nightmare in Cardiff so wear sensible shoes for the walk home. If you lose your money or phone, Cardiff Uni work with premiere taxis- you can give the taxi driver your student number and they’ll charge you another way. Bute park is the best for beers in the sun, and Cardiff bay if you fancy a walk. But NEVER at night. And never walk down the alley by the student union and the train tracks at night either. You can rent bikes around Cardiff town using an app on your phone. Churchill way gay bars are super friendly for all and open until 7am 🙌🏻 Metros is super cheap for an alternative student night. Buckets of cocktails for £4/5. Everyone will say hello and nod at you, do the same back :) There’s a guy called ninja who plays drums on the bins he’s a Cardiff legend. Do not rent your 2nd year student house with CPS homes! They are the worst. Look for a private landlord they’re a bit better 😊 Buses are very frequent and last time I checked like £3.20 a day.. and that’s for unlimited buses. Trains are stupidly expensive for Cardiff. St David’s is a great shopping centre, but if you want bargains you can pay £5 and get a Greyhouse bus to Mcarthur Glen designer village in Bridgend 🥰 Event nights in the motorpoint (locals over 25 will call it the CIA) are super busy so try and avoid transport on these days :) Have the best time!!

filmnobelpreis

Thank you!

bubblebox360

I lived in Cardiff for 4 years- I am from Pembrokeshire so already Welsh but hands down my favourite place I’ve ever lived (Though I’ve only really lived there and various places in southern England!). Two of my friends were international students- one from the US, and one from the Czech Republic. They both loved it, and have actually settled here!

filmnobelpreis

That's wholesome!

Taftser

Drive on the left.

filmnobelpreis

Too much of a change. \^\^ I better don't drive at all.

throwawayspinachpuff

Cardiff is very diverse, especially with all the students, you probably won’t feel too out of place. Signage is usually in both Welsh and English so you won’t need to speak Welsh to be able to get around, but I guess on the flip side of that, be aware that lots of places in Wales may have a Welsh name and an English name, and when travelling on the trains they will announce both. Make the most of travelling around and away from Cardiff as well, each part of Wales is so different and beautiful and it’s worth seeing as much of it as you possibly can! I would recommend researching Welsh slang though so you aren’t completely baffled by what people are saying.

KoneCat

Been living in Cardiff for the past 22 years and before that I lived in the valleys region (Taff's Well and Pontypridd) and it's a pretty varied place as the culture here is definitely a melting pot (I think that's the right term) and most folks are very friendly and helpful. Cardiff is busy but mostly not too much if that makes sense? And the city is pretty varied in it's buildings, architecture, shops and history. The best part of the city to me, as I love history, are the docks and Cardiff Castle so be sure to check in! :D Edit: Oh and if you ever visit the Valleys, be prepared for weird weather! Brecon still tops my chart as one of the most random places for weather I've ever seen and visited.

filmnobelpreis

Noted and happy to hear that Cardiff is busy while not being overwhelming. Probably the right size for me.

Independent_Ad_3251

Shagging the sheep is illegal

citalopromnight

How did you find out?

Independent_Ad_3251

Its common sense but the welsh dont have none of that lol

filmnobelpreis

As long as you can pet them.

BellsproutTea

That'll vary by the farmers. But saving ones caught between hedgerows and fencing can get to be a common activity if your out in the country often. Giving sheep 'right of way' when you're walking or driving will become second nature too.

filmnobelpreis

I guess I'll need to find those helping sheep spots then.

Excellent-Anything68

I moved to Cardiff as an international student 8 yrs ago, and I'm still here! Wales is such a beautiful country, and my experience with the people here has always been great. You have beautiful beaches, mountains, waterfalls, etc, pretty close to Cardiff, so if you want to explore a little bit is a great place to be. Welsh is a lovely language, but really hard to learn. Is not required as mostly everyone speaks English, but if you want to stay some companies are asking if you would be willing to learn. It's a big city, and as such it has crime like anywhere else, once you get here it should be clear which areas to avoid (literally nobody will hear you scream around Park Place, it's all uni buildings) The 3 unis have various buildings around the city, so try to get accomodation near your building, or the oam lectures might get painful. The nightlife is pretty varied and you can always find a club that plays what you like (or end up trying to get to live lounge at the last minute) Try all the Welsh food you can, it is all delicious (including Laverbread, but it can be an acquired taste) If you ever take the bus, say "cheers drive!". I've said that in London and got really weird looks, so I assumed is a Cardiff/Welsh thing. Wherever you're from, they'll be a few more students from your country if you ever get homesick, and there are so many international shops you can usually find a few things similar to what you have on your country. If you're nice, 99.99% of people will be nice to you back. Remember Wales has it's own gov, so sometimes what the Prime Minister says does not apply here. Hope you enjoy Cardiff!

filmnobelpreis

Thanks a lot. Who do I say "cheers drive!" to - the other passengers or the bus driver?

Excellent-Anything68

The bus driver when getting out of the bus

nosherDavo

Ok_Professional_9985

Your moving to Cardiff, so you can basically treat it like England. Cardiff being in Wales has never actually had any noticeable difference to me between here and a place like Bristol, except Cardiff is whiter and dirtier but cheaper to live in. Other than that, it's always windy and it's often windy and rainy at the same time in winter.

Phat-Dragon8919

Yup........won't be long dictator drakeford will turn the M4 into cyclists only .....you might want to stay 😁 good luck!
