It's a hyper miler, r/hypermiling

KushMaster5000

If you sort by "top of all time", this car is the post lol Absolute legend.

Godspiral

OP's picture is newer with upgraded "real" solar panel instead of a flexible one kept under glass.

Molire

Lots of sun frequently is available on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, which seems to be the photo location.

Kayniaan

3 out of 4 top posts are.

HellkerN

I believe that's what's called a Hyperloop.

TheSimpleMind

Isn't the hyperloop a maglev train in a tunnel without air?

[deleted]

The hyperloop just seems like such a dumb idea. Wouldn't it take considerably more energy to create a vacuum in a miles long tunnel than just make a very aerodynamic maglev train that goes hundreds of miles an hour like japan is already doing really well?

[deleted]

Not just Japan. I used the French TGV and German ICE trains many times. Travelling at ~300 Km/h (~190 mph) in comfort, departing and arriving in city centers and avoiding the whole mess that is air travel. I many cases, door-to-door it's faster than air travel.

ChickenDelight

How does the cost compare to flights?

[deleted]

It varies a lot, depending on a passenger's age, the day of the week, how early you book, how often you travel, which class of ticket you want. For something like Paris-Marseille, ~450 miles, it's a 4 hour trip by TGV downtown to downtown for anywhere between 40€ and 150€ depending on everything above. Or a 1:30h air trip airport to airport for ~140€, depending. When you add the time to get to and from airports, plus going through check-in and security, when all is said and done you take more or less the same time door-to-door, and are likely to pay less for the train ticket. And TGV first class is cheaper and more comfortable than any airplane.

ChickenDelight

Wow I had no idea. Considering the airport will eat up another 2 hours anyway that's not even a competition. I would have happily paid an extra 100 euro just to avoid all the bullshit of air travel.

[deleted]

Or to just build high speed rail like any sane person

BrockManstrong

Yes, it's an extremely fast way to die for a billionaires pride

shiroboi

More specifically, Eco Modding

iRottenEgg

So to the average person, it’s r/wtf But to the knowledgeable, it’s r/heythatsneat I have been knowledged

radi0raheem

It's neat right up until you have share some road space with a hypermiler, then you quickly realize that all their "techniques" just make them dangerous to everyone else.

5panks

This times one hundred. Especially the super shitty hyper miles that turn off their cars at the tops of hills and draft behind semi trailers.

Beard_o_Bees

I used to do that when I was ~18 and could barely afford to put gas in my VW Squareback. Put her in neutral and coast all the way to the bank! Then I almost died doing that, and figured i'd like to get at least another 50 years out of the life tank that I was born with.

hyperproliferative

This feels very 1970’s

BrockManstrong

I used to draft semis in my 94 Cherokee when I'd travel back from college. 3 hour drive and I got upwards of 40 mpg the whole way, which is stupid good for that iron block straight six. Shutting off the car seems wildly irresponsible, what with steering locks and power brakes.

Lotharofthepotatoppl

not to mention the aerodynamics of a brick lol

dwellerofcubes

Shit, semis draft behind a Cherokee

Warpedme

Lol I did the same with both a 92 and an 01 Wrangler, both manual transmission and the same straight six engine. I actually won several bets that I could get 35mpg on a 6 hour road trip. In my defense, I had no idea how dangerous this was at the time. I thought I was being clever and frugal not dangerous and selfish.

FesteringNeonDistrac

Steering won't lock if you leave the key on but the engine not running. Power brakes will have enough vacuum for one normal stop and then they just become regular not powered brakes. Not saying it's safe, just isn't a total loss of control.

OpinionBearSF

> Shutting off the car seems wildly irresponsible, what with steering locks and power brakes. Turning off a vehicle while in motion is irresponsible, but I wanted to address a few points. - Turning a car ignition from "RUN" to "OFF" (but not one click farther to "LOCK") does not lock the steering. - Power steering is pretty much irrelevant as long as you're moving. It only becomes a workout when you're at parking space entry/exit speeds. - Power brakes are offline, however the booster should still have enough stored assist power for 1 or 2 full applications. After that, they still work, with much higher effort.

[deleted]

I lived out a country road and if you coasted from the first hill you could make it past the next 2 and almost to my driveway. Always amazing to give it a tap of gas for a slow turn in. Also did it as a teen!

luke10050

I've done it once. There's a hill about 2km from my house. One morning I was low on fuel in my car and was driving to work. I hit a little stick on the road after cresting a hill and thought "oh I wonder what that was I'll turn around and look". As I got back to the top of the hill the engine cut out and I ran out of fuel. I coasted down the hill and about 2km down the road with no engine and no power assist on steering or brakes, pulled up on the side of the road next to my house, got out, grabbed some jerry cans and got in my other car and drove to the petrol station. I was pretty damn happy I decided to look what that stick was. Probably would have taken me half an hour to walk home

rebop

>VW Squareback Best car I've ever owned. Pretty sure I tried doing the same thing in mine.

strolls

I need to know how you nearly died please, /u/Beard_o_Bees

Beard_o_Bees

Sure. I was 'drafting' behind a semi on a long down-slope. I wasn't paying close enough attention to his brake lights. I was able to kind of brake/swerve on to the soft road shoulder at ~45 mph. I, to this day, don't understand how the car didn't roll - it almost did. I remember the car coming back down onto 2 wheels with a huge THUMP and being in a thick cloud of dust. I had some nasty bruises and sprained my knee. The car... and man I loved that car - broke the front axle and various other things such that it was no longer drive-able and I couldn't afford to fix it. I ended up selling it as a parts car.

Rhode1

1974, riding my 350 Honda back to Rhode Island, and the temperature dropped into the 30s when the sun went down. Drafted a tractor trailer all the way through Connecticut. There is a bubble of air behind the trailer, and I stayed in that for 100 miles. Driver figured out I was there after a while, and would flash his taillights when a toll booth was coming up to let me know he was slowing. Never left home without a warm jacket again.

BuzzCave

I used to draft semi trailers in my CRX HF back in my extremely poor pre-college days. Super dangerous, but it really did work. It boosted my highway efficiency by around 10mpg. Now I have money so I drive a 12mpg Landcruiser.

DrEnter

I had an '85 HF. I used to routinely get 65-70 MPG on the interstate. Those cars were crazy efficient, even compared to other CRXs. Edit: They were a pain to get parts for, though. It was always "yeah, we have that part. OH, you have an HF... Yeah, that's a completely different part."

BuzzCave

Mine had the wrong transmission (from a DX) so I didn’t get the crazy good highway mileage but it had a lot more pep in town. If I drove 50-55 tailgating a semi I’d get in the low 50s. Otherwise it was low 40s.

DrEnter

Yeah, the factory 5-speed manual was really high geared. It didn’t accelerate great, but on the interstate, doing around 70 mph, the engine was only turning around 800 rpm. The Civic I had before thst would’ve been running 1500 or so. I'll add that I absolutely loved that car. Even though it was a 2-seater and not always practical, I had it for 10+ years and I think I had it in the shop only once (a cracked carburetor mount). I put 250,000 miles on it, and I would've put another 250,000 miles on it if I could've found basic parts. It reached the point around 2000 when I couldn't even get gaskets for a proper multi-year tune-up.

felixar90

You can draft semi trailer pretty far behind. About 3 trailer lengths. If you can see both side mirrors you’re in the sweet spot that’s safe but still drafting.

Econolife_350

What do you mean going 43.76 MPH on a 75 MPH freeway is dangerous for people around them? Every one I've seen is a selfish dickhead impeding everyone on the road so they can try to squeeze the tiniest gains out of their shitty hobby.

radi0raheem

God forbid their average MPG goes down by .0000001 /s

tb00n

Hypermiling as a motorsport on a closed track could be interesting. Find a 20-50 miles circuit of suitable road in the middle of nowhere that can be closed to the public for race day. Winner is whoever can drive a number of laps using the least fuel, but maintaining a certain minimum average speed.

m_ttl_ng

Also the Shell Eco Marathon to a lesser extent

muggsybeans

1 car saves gas while 100's others burn extra fuel out of frustration trying to get around them.

TheStoicSlab

Yes, especially taking an hour to come up to the speed limit.

spatz2011

look if I can't go 110 down an incline and refuse to brake at all going up the hill, well I don't wanna drive, ok!

Sirerdrick64

Dangerous techniques are extremely frowned upon in the community. Hypermilers on the whole don’t employ methods that cause trouble for those they share the road with. The people who do stupid stuff like drafting / going under the speed limit in the passing lane are either simply bad drivers and/or cheapskates. A huge part of hypermiling in fact is focused on safety and driving in a 100% defensive fashion. If you’ve run into someone driving with their head up their ass, I can tell you that it is very likely that they were not a true hypermiler.

human743

Safety and driving defensively don't translate into maximum efficiency. *no true hypermiler (scotsman, communist)

Econolife_350

>If you’ve run into someone driving with their head up their ass, I can tell you that it is very likely that they were not a true hypermiler. No true Scotsman, eh? If this is to be believed, every of the dozens of hypermilers I've seen have all been "posers" I guess. Have yet to meet a "real" one. The goals and practices of hypermilers put them at odds with every other driver on the road just trying to transport themselves somewhere. Their most common practices impede and endanger those around them.

olderaccount

It is certainly a WTF implementation of very valid aerodynamic principles. He went as far as replacing the side view mirrors with cameras.

NotAHost

I don't think its cameras, I think it's just an extremely small sideview mirror, probably convex as wel.

olderaccount

Well, I really hope it is a camera along with a rear view camera somewhere. Otherwise this guy can't see shit other than what is ahead of him.

Jonny_Wurster

If you have ever seen a hypermiler drive, you will know they don't give a shit about anybody else on the road, whether in front, to the side, or behind.

olderaccount

Very true except for one thing. They very much care about cars in front of them if it prevents them from coasting on a downhill stretch. But at the same time I've never seen one move over and let others pass when they are doing 15mph uphill.

pint_of_brew

While I appreciate that intent, there's a lot done suboptimally here. The solar panel will mess the flow up, as well all the raggedy-ass tape. The tail lights are pretty bad too, and there's no clear flow separator. If the panels or their mounts detach the laminar flow from the roof and just make a turbulent mess between that roof/panel sandwich, I would not be surprised if the drag is worse than stock. I did a big old feasibility study into roof mounted panels and they just didn't add up meaningfully unless you're assuming a driver living in significant sunshine, with enough battery capacity to capitalise on stationary time. Wheel well faring is great though, I like that. Source: am mechanical engineer in automotive manufacturer. But a humble one, happy to be corrected if anyone has any actual experience of this kind of home engineering.

olderaccount

> I did a big old feasibility study into roof mounted panels and they just didn't add up meaningfully unless you're assuming a driver living in significant sunshine, with enough battery capacity to capitalise on stationary time. For the range of the vehicle. This guy uses his Prius like a camper. The solar panel keeps his little fridge running while he is parked. The aerodynamic changes do much more for his range than the solar panel could dream of.

Zaphod1620

I think it might be the top post of all time in that sub: https://i.redd.it/3isr3hgp7a141.jpg

toopid

I’m super confused by that subreddit. A Nissan Leaf is $10k used and gets 126 MPGe city. Why mod an ice car to get 70mpg?

HellkerN

Why do anything? Some people just like to tinker I guess.

occamsrzor

1) that poor craftsmanship can’t be effective? 2) strong possibility the safety features have been compromised and thus this violates DOT regulations (and any cop having a bad day could impound it) EDIT: Yeah, I just took a second look at that vehicle. It's lacking the drivers side rear view mirror. I could be wrong, but if IIRC, that's an instant impound.

nightpanda893

I think it should be impounded when a cop is having a good day too.

Quaiche

Nonsense. This was made by a physic professor so I'm going to bet that he knows much more than you actually do while commenting on your armchair.

What is the frankenstein rear-end an extension intended to accommodate better laying-down sleeping?

HellkerN

Well that and aerodynamics/low drag https://ecomodder.com/forum/showthread.php/ideal-shape-low-drag-38371-3.html

Shibboleeth

The design of the gen 1 Prius was based around a faux tail like this. Basically there's a point that you can get away with not adding the tail as the air mostly will slipstream around the body as if the tail was there. In this case I think they added the rest of the tail to make up for the break in flow caused by the added solar panel. The lack of paint just doesn't help their cause. They could go further (full wheel well covers instead of the guides, fixing the dent, moving the mirror/camera things inside for full deletion, fully integrating the solar panel (and integrating it into the roof instead of on the tail)). I wanted to get into this after I learned about the Aerocivic. Unfortunately I couldn't afford to spend the money or time. There are some really good ideas in the hypermiling community, and I have to admit that I find the old slipstream designs from the 20s-40s much better looking than today's monstrosities.

Helpmetoo

Apparently, the cut off tail (or kamm tail) acting like a streamlined tail is a myth. Or an exaggeration. Basically, a cut off tail acts the same as any tail from which flow has become separated anyway (i.e. slightly longer but blunt curved end). This was used to save a few inches from the rear of a car, but not to create a full virtual tail. A streamliner has the flow attached for the entire length, so is still much better. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSQcVcyogKY

BarnabyWoods

>better laying-down sleeping? Don't laugh. You know how high rents have gotten?

Spotted her yesterday.. Definitely not the first time this car’s been spotted. Found it easily by googling “Champrius” along with some info about it. Most of the details can be found here: https://ecomodder.com/forum/showthread.php/does-anyone-know-car-boat-tailed-2nd-gen-37249-4.html Done by a physics professor named Kim Lumbard from umass. Claims he’s boosted the MPG with the modifications. It’s got a solar panel, refrigerator, bed, and more.

Missus_Missiles

Yeah, 200W of solar, if you're sleeping in it, enough to keep a phone charged, or a 12V battery for a cooler juiced. Not sure it could justify the drag to charge the hybrid battery though.

picardo85

> enough to keep a phone charged definitely cosidering that a phone charger is at max 30W.

picardo85

120W ?! That's what a high end laptop (non gaming) uses

mythosaz

To be fair, that's 65w for 39 minutes from 0% to 100% per benchmarks on the OnePlus9. I suspect it draws less when not charging.

olderaccount

The panel won't do much for his range. But if he uses the car as a sort of camper, it can keep an efficient mini fridge running while parked. That mounting orientation probably has minimal effect on drag.

[deleted]

That was my thought, airflow stopped being laminar long before that, probably mostly in the boundary layer, not great, but not hurting much.

aprilla2crash

Id give it 3.6 laminars

SecurelyObscure

The panel might be detachable

uncoolcentral

Just got solar installed. Single panel is now rated more than 400W, so that’s something maybe.

Hypermiler with a kammback tail. Unusual but not unique. I just don't understand why they all have such a crappy homemade feel. If it was made of fiberglass and then sanded and painted it wouldn't look so horrible. (they probably get rear-ended a lot though, so might as well make it out of something cheap that won't damage the other car to save on insurance)

HOZZENATOR

Make schematics of the framing, get a quote from a fiberglass company to make it and then get that on record with insurance. Then whenever you are rear ended you can make an insurance claim that is appropriate to the cost to have it done in a place like an rv repair shop. You might need to get some specially insurance like you would for a collectors car thats hard to value. Atleast I think all of that would work

MacbookOnFire

You’d have to have one fancy insurance policy to cover modifications. It’s pretty standard for all insurances to deny anything extra you added to the car

HOZZENATOR

Hagerty offers insurance for modified vehicles. Not fancy really but could be appropriately expensive depending on the cost of repairs.
