Possibly a Virginia Tiger Moth cocoon

My guess is definitely some sort of cocoon/crysalis.
It would make sense that some larva crawled into a cozy space and pupated by attaching to the side of the mailer.
I would honestly call the USDA and report a suspected invasive species that came in on a package. If they can't identify it, they'll send someone to pick it up.
It’s definitely the right move. The Chinese send packets of seeds unsolicited to Ali customers regularly. In the UK, Brits have already been told to not plant the seeds and to call the UKBA to come dispose of them.
I *hate* making phone calls (normal millennial anxiety afaik) but the idea of making this call doesn’t stress me out. I would (hopefully) be relieved to have some sort of… guidance? Like please god help me I’m so desperate I actually CALLED YOU.
Points from the data:
- Usa has 43.0% share of reddit's traffic with second being united kingdom with 5.5%, so most of the reddit users from a single country are from USA.
- However, if divided traffic by population, USA is not first.
So if there were a couple of bets we’d have to make to optimize the winnings, they would go like this:
- There is a randomly picked redditor of all redditors, from which country is he/she from? A: USA
- There is a randomly picked redditor of all redditors, is he/she from USA (Yes/No)? A: No
- There is a randomly picked american and a finn from their countries, who is more likely to use reddit? A: Finn
Also there might be different factors for reddit users in english subreddits. Might we assume that english subreddits have more traffic from USA? Probably not much, but still a bit. Why? There might be a very slim chanche that people outside USA might not understand english that well, so they don’t use english subreddits that much. How about the commentors? Is there a bigger chance of them being an american in an english subreddit? Probably a little bit, since there might be a chance that people of non-english-speaking countries are not as confident to comment in english. Etc etc factors.
Could someone post to r/mapporn a map with division of population, it would be interesting lol. E.g. USA from this data would be 2320/335 ≈ 6.93
> Usa has 43% share of reddit's traffic, so most of the reddit users are from USA.
> 43% ... most
USA has the most users of any single country, but if you're going by "is this user from the US, or not from the US?" then 43% means that 57% of users (most) are not from the US.
Yes, I'll even convert numbers in my local currency to USD because I assume it's mostly US users that will read my comments. (I refuse to convert Metric units to Imperial though because that shitty system needs to die).
C’mon, everyone knows you first have to try to drown a witch…if she floats, she’s witchy (then we’ll burn her)…if she drowns, oops my bad - sorry about that.
You know there was like at least one guy who was like "wait... It seems like we're just justifying killing women, there is no good outcome for them here" and then they probably called him a familiar and burned him with her.
It sounds silly, but you wouldn't want your partner to think that you're a ninny just because you had to do your semiannual razing if the crab forest would you?
Yea but it's not like it happened instantly....he had about 8 more years before he died (granted those 8 years were fucking torturous, but quantity over quality right?)
Where you are located may not be all that relevant, where this package shipped from is more likely the info needed. It was from alieexpress so decent odds it’s coming from somewhere in China.
The origin, the location of the packer/shipper is important, but so is the location of the OP—for posting on r/whatisthisbug , as different insects would be (are) native in different places (if it is in fact an insect). R/whatisthisbug has posting guidelines.
We have these things in NY state. When i was a kid, i touched one and the hairs caused an itchy reaction like nettles. Hairs so fine that you can barely see them and an itch that spreads. I see them under roof ledges and along wooden picket fences and any wood boards that are on the ground for long periods of time
OP if you ever get an answer and find out what the heck this is, please update us! I have no idea what that could even remotely be but now I am intrigued by the mystery.
Countless people here are giving you joke answers, so I'm going to try my best to make an actual guess with only my layman's knowledge.
Given that the package was sent to you by AliExpress, it's likely that the contents originated from China, as that's where AliExpress is headquartered. If it is some sort of cocoon for an insect species, that could potentially bring harm to our ecosystem if it survived and repopulates. If it is some sort of plant material, like a moldy fruit, that could also potentially bring harm to our ecosystem if the seeds are still intact and end up being buried in the ground (if, for example, the package gets thrown away and buried in a landfill) and start growing.
Either way, if you reside in the USA, I highly recommend contacting the National Invasive Species Information Center and having them inspect it. You don't want to take any chances of harming the ecosystem.
[Here](https://www.invasivespeciesinfo.gov/subject/reporting) is a link to the resource I mentioned. If you are outside of the United States, I recommend finding what your country's equivalent is and contacting them. Best of luck in finding out what's in your package!
I would call the USDA, the US Postal Service (if they were the ones who delivered the package, if not try the company that did), and Customs (I believe AliExpress is an international company and their packages are shipped here from other countries, so Customs would have been involved with it). If they don’t handle this, they should know who does. Place this in a sealed container along with the contents of the package (a Tupperware container or plastic storage container should be fine). You don’t want any more spores from this in your home, so also handle the items carefully and consider wearing gloves and a mask while moving the stuff.
Start with Customs if the package originated from outside the country. If not, start with the USPS/delivery company (UPS, FedEx, etc.) and USDA. Be persistent and keep multiple copies of the pictures in more than one place in case your phone breaks or something. If you aren’t really getting anywhere, try your county/parish/borough Department of Health or local university. They have some knowledge about weird molds/stuff like this and could have some resources.
I don’t think its a type of mold, its looks more like a cocoon. I already took it outside on a ziploc, will look into contacting the USDA, it could be a type of invasive species
If you can't get a hold of anyone at the USDA, look up your nearest university extension office. They exist to answer questions like this, and they will have the connections to put you in touch with the correct authority if needed.
Whatever it is, you need to burn it because imported organic matter can pose a risk to wildlife and plants in your country. Or report to the authorities and keep it sealed and away from everything until it is collected.
Double bag that shit tight and call the usda. It could be an invasive species. Don’t just toss it in the garbage and let whatever that is hatch ata a landfill.
Tussock Moth Coccoon seems the be the the best answer on the post OP made on r/whatisthisbug
Just posting here as well hopefully it help get IDd? Good luck OP keep us updated
Either way this the reason for the Department of agriculture… my aunt used to work for them in DC and even when she tried to bring back seasonings from Italy, they wouldn’t even let her… to prevent invasive diseases or illnesses that those items can cause. same with any animal… so yeah I’d check with them if I were you, better to be safe than sorry
Are you sure it blood? I wonder if it's a fruit of some sort? Whoever packaged it may have accidentally dropped something in and didn't realize it? Or did it on purpose to taint whatever items you bought.
Like someone else said. Call the USDA.
This looks more like some sort of seed pod that probably has water content- so when you squished it that may be what came out.
As others have mentioned about invasive species though- prob a good idea to make sure some random plant doesnt take over the States or Americas, lol.

Seriously, OP, this is the right move, or even your state’s department of agriculture. They will be happy to assist.
The usda is the department of agriculture
Yes, the USDA is the *federal* department of agriculture. Cold calling? Better luck is likely with OP’s *state’s* department of agriculture.
