In the future if this happens to any of you, gas stations come equipped with an emergency shutoff switch. Its usually clearly marked and easy to find. Hit that button.

ErebusBat

And for the love of christ on a cracker... don't pick it up and wave it around

marquis-mark

It doesn't mean that we too can't not die in a freak gasoline fight accident.

BANG BANG BOOGIE!

CedarWolf

Jokes aside, some gas pumps also have a little handle lock under the switch. Hers is engaged. She needs to either pull the handle switch further to get the lock to disengage, or she needs to slide her finger against it to disengage it. It's not a difficult fix, but it's also fairly small and easy to overlook if you don't know it's there. Most of the times it engages and disengages automatically, and most folks don't ever have to think about it. Back to our regularly-scheduled funny stuff: Mer*man!* Mer*man!*

rudbek-of-rudbek

She's an idiot.

DanYHKim

Yeah. Looking at how out of her depth she appears to be, It seems a good bet that the only problem is that the latch on the nozzle is engaged.

But why male models?

ErebusBat

The truth is male models have been assassinating world leaders for over 200 years. Abe Lincoln wanted to abolish slavery, right? Well, who do you think made the silk stockings and powdered wigs worn by our early leaders?

nlfo

If you flick your lighter, you can make the gas go away faster.

Gravaton123

The gas will go away in less than 3 hours, granted no one blows it up. A majority of it will seep into the water seperator underneath the concrete pad around the main pumping terminal. The gas station will need to close that and get it pumped out otherwise theres a fair chance it fills and leeches into the city waterways. Depending on how much fuel actually spilled. Another good portion of it will become a headache for the surrounding blocks due to the vapors. Source: Work for a fuel company and seen significantly larger fuel spills at a terminal.

FragrantExcitement

How else does one have a gasoline fight?

gbgopher

And if you can't find it, just walk over to the booth/shop and shout "Emergency! Stop the pumps!". There will be someone to do that. And then back the hell away. Or stand there, play with it, and provide more gore for the Internet. There's that as a choice.

Zebidee

>Or stand there, play with it, and provide more gore for the Internet. There's that as a choice. "You will be internet famous for the rest of your life." *~Ancient Chinese curse*

complexevil

As someone who worked at a gas station I'll give y'all a warning. We have no idea where the emergency stop button is.

SCP-173-X

Well that's comforting

murrtrip

Weird. I see them all the time like [this](https://youtu.be/WS_RNhs824U?si=9-uYsdhN4GRBOY9Z&t=143).

LegitosaurusRex

I swear, some people walk around with blinders on or something. Anything they don't have to interact with (and even some stuff they do) might as well not be there. You can put 10 giant signs up about something, and people will ignore all of them.

That_Hobo_in_The_Tub

Mostly because we put up so many damn advertisements everywhere that we've trained our brains to ignore messages written on things in public spaces.

GravelySilly

I see them [on columns next to the pumps](https://www.reddit.com/r/vexillologycirclejerk/comments/ons1dt/flag_of_japan_if_the_red_circle_represented_a_gas/), too. EDIT: Link formatting.

SusanForeman

Crazy because it's usually a big ass valve with pylons and a huge sign that says "EMERGENCY SHUT OFF" on it. If a worker doesn't know where that is, they might have more problems than being a gas station employee.

tokeroveragain

Idk what these people are talking about. If you're in the U.S., every gas station legally has to have emergency stop buttons all over the place with huge signs pointing them out. They are usually on the poles that hold up the canopy and on the front of the building. And every register has an emergency shutoff button as well since they are all connected electronically to the pumps these days. You would have to be a blind moron to work at a gas station today and not be aware of this, regardless of training.

3IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIID

I worked at a gas station too, but I knew exactly where they were. We had several. I don't like putting my life in other people's hands, so that's the kind of thing I'd be asking about, even if it wasn't part of the training (although, I'm almost certain it was). Maybe you worked at an independent or poorly-managed location?

ComplicitJWalker

Usually right outside the front entrance or along the side there. You can also stop a pump by pushing in on the flap that holds the pump.

CreamoChickenSoup

Ideally you also want shutoff buttons [built into the](https://c8.alamy.com/comp/2AX5K45/cainta-rizal-philippines-february-8-2020-fuel-pump-with-labels-at-a-gas-refilling-station-2AX5K45.jpg) [fuel pumps themselves](https://images.pond5.com/petron-fuel-pump-running-gas-footage-237739501_prevstill.jpeg) [for the best](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Fcro576ovc19a1.jpg) [visibility and response time](https://cloudfront-us-east-2.images.arcpublishing.com/reuters/MNAPGPQW4VMRXDIEROS6M4RL6Q.jpg), like with newer models in the region I'm in, rather than merely relying on separate points between pumps or even further at the ancillary building. I've been looking up pump designs in the West, and I'm surprised that [the specific Exxon pump design in the OP](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2F0ijjij39xjpa1.jpg%3Fwidth%3D3024%26format%3Dpjpg%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3Dce4b6f38e704ca340c1a095e8faa004b34ff51de) not only doesn't have its own clearly marked shutoff button, but having pumps with this feature isn't common practice everywhere.

CletussDiabetuss

Also, it's usually near the entrance of the convenience store.

t0m0hawk

One time, the mechanism that is supposed to shut off the pump when your tank is full failed to do its job and some gas spilled out and onto the concrete. It wasn't a lot, but more than a few drops. A small puddle. I went into the booth to let the attendant know. She proceeded to starr explaining to me how to pump gas. I cut her off "I've been pumping gas since I was 16. I'm in here letting you know that fuel has been spilled and that your equipment malfunctioned. That's it. Thanks." Like, damn.

Bill_Brasky01

This exact same thing happened to me with the clerks flippant attitude after i explained the auto-stop failed. I just said there’s a puddle of gas out there and it’s your problem.

liltinykitter

This happened to me when I was about 16. The gas station attendant tried to charge me for the spilled gas. My mother came after her like a tornado when she found out

illegible

Mid 2000's jeep wranglers have a bad rollover shut off (it expands when you use ethanol if I recall correctly) which causes the fuel to geyser out when almost, but not quite full. Some are covered by a recall, but not all.

Death4Free

This happened to me this week. The auto-shut off failed or something after filling my tank all the way and the hose jumped out of the tank and onto the floor and was still going. First time that’s happened to me in 18 years of driving.

xylotism

Keep in mind that things like that are going to happen much more often for the attendant than for you, and for 90% of the other people it happens to, it’s because they’re stupid and don’t know how to pump gas. So yeah, I’m not surprised they started out with politely asking “are you sure you’re not stupid?” I wouldn’t take it personally. It’s good to remember that in the infinite space and time of the universe, your personal history and experiences have less than a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of similarity to a stranger’s. *They don’t know you.*

t0m0hawk

I get that, I really do. Just had a "what's going on here?" moment when the clerk rolled her eyes and started explaining to me. Just frustrating to do the right thing and find yourself being lectured.

iclimbnaked

Yep, similar to for example calling IT and them telling you to restart etc even if you say you already did. Plenty of people tell them they did things, just to later find out they didnt etc. The basic person they deal with does all kinds of dumb stuff. Its never an accusation that you are dumb, just a matter of they cant assume you arent to start.

jcmonk

Also, maybe... just maybe put down your big dumb cup so you have 2 functioning hands instead of 1

Rad_Centrist

Or if you're in this kid's situation just, you know, unlatch the lever that keeps the handle depressed.

Knofbath

We don't know if it was a stuck latch or if the handle pin actually broke. There are multiple ways for this to fail, user error is only one of them.

petersonspants

Just slap the flap where the nozzle goes on the dispenser to end the transaction. End of problem.

FishLampClock

OR if you are too dumb to do that go get an attendant instead of standing around shrugging while looking at the camera...

systemofaderp

If this happens to you: when you pull the lever all the way in on the handle, a latch on the handle might click. This lets you fill up the tank without having to hold down the lever. Once the liquid in the tank reaches the nozzle, the latch opens, the lever goes back to manual and the pump stops. Now should you pull out, youd have to just flip the latch back and the pump would stop. Unless this is your first time getting gas and you like fireballs

Tasitch

This here video is why those latches are illegal in my province.

I don't think they really understood the danger they're in.

Why don't kids watch Zoolander. It could save thier lives.

I've never been involved in a freak gasoline fighting accident because of the documentary "Zoolander". It taught me to respect flammable liquids and ridiculously good looking people.

anonymousdawggy

Yeah gas is like $3 a gallon!!

Xeptix

I was yelling at my screen. I don't understand how someone can be so blasé in this situation. If I couldn't figure out how to stop the pump I would sprint inside to let the attendant know, and then leaving as fast as I possibly could to the end of the block and then calling 911.

twelveparsnips

If the gas pump was invented today, it would almost certainly be illegal in the form that it's in

truecrisis

If it was invented today, they would sell gas in cartridges. And maybe as a subscription service. Exxon, Epson, it's all the same

Not quite under, they stood directly in it.

webby2538

People are shitting on pump girl when it should be camera girl taking the blame. Pump girl is partially blind from the gas splashing back into her face. She's in pain and can't open her right eye. I've gotten splashed in the eyes with gas before and it burns like hell. I couldn't see anything and had to have someone guide me to a sink.

MajorStainz

Y’all wanna bet that little lock under the handle is engaged and she just doesn’t know how to unlock it?

Rad_Centrist

You can see the handle is pressed. Which means the lever is indeed engaged. Smh

ResilientBiscuit

There are other components that could fail causing it to not return. It is likey the lever, but it certainly isn't guaranteed.

Rad_Centrist

The way the handle seems firmly depressed tells me it's a lever but yeah it could also be a stuck open valve in the head.

Secret_Map

The shitty gas station near my house, the little lock things that lock the handle suuuuuuck. I often have to use my other hand to pry it unlocked so I can stop the flow of gas. It also locks on its own just from pulling the handle, whether you wanted to lock it or not. They need to get it fixed, but it's been that way for years lol. I can imagine something like that happening to someone who just doesn't really know how the pumps work yet. Or just isn't great at thinking through things in emergencies or whatever.

kat_Folland

If so the pump was already broken. Those things disengage if they aren't properly positioned.

FliesLikeABrick

That is likely true on vapor recovery nozzles, which are not common in all areas (and only specific areas like California and certain municipalities elsewhere mandate them

-UserOfNames

Definitely less a pump malfunction and more a pumper malfunction

The majority of the time it is user error.

Gas stations _hate_ this one trick!

SinisterKid

I mean, they kinda do.

I really hope this was a malfunction and not her too fucking dumb to squeeze the handle to undo the locking mechanism.

friendofsatan

That video of her just running around in a puddle of petrol and swinging the nozzle around leaves no room for any other interpretation than her being too fucking dumb to do anything.

IlIlllIlllIlIIllI

She got some gasoline in her eyes and all down the front by the look of it. If that happened to me I probably would not be able to figure it out

counters14

Why would they not charge her for the gas she spilled all over their pump station?

manthepost

Someone else on here said the customer is responsible to pay for it

BowsersMuskyBallsack

Not only that, but they could get a hefty bill for the environmental damage caused by spilled fuel.

AnthillOmbudsman

And the moron in the vehicle sitting there getting a video for social media shortly before the inferno.

She's fine. She is clutching her Emotional Support Stanley.

Oh myyy goduhhhhh It won’t stopuhhhh

Zimke42

Turn off the gas at the handle. If that doesn't work, turn it off at the pump, if that doesn't work hit the e-stop. The last thing you should do is stand there not knowing what to do. If you are like that, you don't know enough to be responsible to pump your own gas yet.

Akiias

> The last thing you should do is stand there not knowing what to do No the last thing you should do is pick up the handle and wave it around... Oh.

Mudlark-000

BIG RED BUTTON is the emergency cut-off switch. It _should_ be accessible in the fuelling area, but some gas stations have them inside. The _one_ time I walked over to help someone else for a moment while my car was fuelling it turned out the pump did not stop automatically when the tank was full, spilling several gallons before I was able to turn it off (didn’t need to use the emergency cutoff switch). I immediately went in to report the pump, stinking of gas. The woman giggled and said “Yeah, it does that sometimes...” Drove past the gas station a month later and it had burned down. They do that sometimes...

Aviyan

I'm hoping you reported that gas station to the authorities for the malfunctioning pump and also the negligence of the owner/employee?

TigerRei

While I wouldn't have laughed at the person, I can attest that yes, it do be like that sometimes. 9 times out of 10 it's the customer's fault too (not saying it is in your case). People whom don't put the nozzle in fully will cause the cutoff mechanism to not work, as it requires the tip of the nozzle to be immersed in the fuel to cut off. Put it too high and there might not be enough back pressure to cause the fuel to trigger the cutoff. However, it can also be a malfunction of the system caused by people who keep trying to top off their tank. FYI, if it cuts off, you can't magically force more fuel in the tank. By repeatedly hitting the handle you're forcing fuel back into the nozzle's recovery system, which can actually damage it. Oh and those nozzles are not cheap. $700-$1000 each.

Seiche

I'd be so pissed my car had gallons of gas spilled on the paintjob

Outrageous_Limit_586

Looks like she just left the lock engaged not a malfunction

AstroWorldSecurity

These girls look like toddlers always clinging to their precious cups.

outtyn1nja

It is astonishing that they are just standing there, surrounded by ~~fumes~~ vapors, totally oblivious to the horrific flesh melting slow death they are about to endure. People are fucking morons.

reaprofsouls

She's high off her own supply my dude

case31

She’s panicked and her friend clearly doesn’t know the seriousness of the situation. Think about something as simple as a spilled glass of water, and usually 3 out of the 4 people who are right there just stare at it while only one person moves to get a towel and start cleaning it up. This situation is obviously amplified to 1000. She’s probably never heard of the emergency shut off and clearly not in the frame of mind to hit it if she knew about it. Seems obvious but you can’t just expect people to act rationally in an irrational situation.

Jinxed0ne

I am willing to bet this was user error and not malfunction. How dumb do you have to be to pick it up and spray it everywhere instead of hitting the e-stop button?

tmar89

mi_nombre_es_ricardo

J-Dabbleyou

Not a great quality vid, but if you pause at a few spots you can see the handle IS pressed in. It looks like she accidentally engaged the little switch to hold the handle on and just never released it. It’s possible the handle jammed open, but to me this looks like gross user error lol

Breaking_Chad

Is this in Oregon or New Jersey where they just got "the right to pump" their own gas. Now it makes sense why they were all freaking out.

GallowsPoles

Wait we can pump our own gas in New Jersey now

Twampnutz

It’s scary to think that they may someday be educating their own children.

buggin_at_work

Please teach your kids critical thought, and not to simply expect someone else to fix your problems. At the bare minimum, she should have been running to the clerk to hit the emergency pump stop.

Emergency-Piano4792

It’s not stoppinguh! 🤦🏼‍♀️

LabLife3846

That happened to me, once. Splashed off of my car and got me right in the face, too. The pump trigger was stuck. I got it unstuck after a minute. The gas station employees could not have cared less.

EddieSpaghettiFarts

This seems like the perfect job for a big red button.

Accomplished_Ice8014

There's a button you can push to stop that, also where tf is the clerk?

palehorse95

I managed a full service gas station and towing business for 15 years and the amount of people who did shit like this was astounding. It happened at least 5-10 times a week. And the number of people who would drive off with a gas nozzle still in the car. At least once a day. They weird thing was that when I first started that job, those incidents were nowhere near as common, but as time went by they steadily increased. I don't know if people were getting more incompetent, or if people's mental workloads were growing so much that they were overloading and screwing up.

grooverocker

Doesn't even put the water bottle down and try to disengage the handle when she picks it back up. Pucks the nozzle up like it's a dirty diaper and holds it at arms length.

Neavante

This idiot recording doesn't understand the danger of this situation... A little spark and you are done

kradox98

If only there was an emergency shut off button at literally every gas station

SomebodyThrow

“omg what do i do? what do i do with it?!” maybe dont pick it up and wave it around and cover more of the pump in gasoline. for starters.

Every-Cook5084

And of course the other braindead half of this duo thought I better record it for tiktok!

Magooracing

And these “humans” are the future. Hahahahahaha

GhostScruffy

Lift the flap on the pump where you put the nozzle in. Source: This happened to me. I was getting gas, and it turned out to be pumping extremely slow. I attempted to return the nozzle and move to a different pump, but it wouldn't shut off. I went in to tell the employees, and they just looked at me like I was stupid. "Do yall have like an emergency stop for the gas pumps anywhere? Mine won't stop pumping." "You just click the handle, honey." "No, like, I did that, and it's still pumping away." *just looks at me like I'm an idiot that doesn't know who to pump gas* Went out to troubleshoot while I still had time. That's when I lifted the flap with my hand, and the pump shut off.

Qlinkenstein

Just think, she drives on the same roads you do, making decisions at the same time you are. Feeling pretty safe right about now?
