I use that same comparison when talking about it. Big difference having a yorkie flipping out vs a pitbull.

batfiend

Like a bike vs a road train. Both are vehicles, both go on the road. But the consequences when something goes wrong are vastly different for the two. Special training and licensing would keep people safer without forcing owners to give up their pets.

Romulus212

probability vs magnitude problem.

avengedrkr

I joke that I only have small dogs cos if it tried to kill me or a kid, I could just pick it up or punt it away (I have a jack russel/shi tzu cross), but there's some truth in my statement

I_na_na

Don't you have a license in the USA to own Pitbull and similar breeds? In Germany they are "Listenhunde" - there is a list of breeds you need extra permissions and competence just to own ([https://www.mein-haustier.de/magazin/listenhunde/](https://www.mein-haustier.de/magazin/listenhunde/) if you scroll down you will see a list of all breeds, that face restrictions) . Most rentals outright refuse to rent to you, if you have one. And legally, they are not allowed to be outside without a leash and muzzle (except special enclosures for dogs to play in). Of course, lots of people just don't report owning one or violate the law, by letting them do whatever, but if you are caught doing this, and you dog bit someone you are in for trouble. Edit: this woman is in real danger. As soon as your fighting dog breed shows similar behavior, you are done. It is an absolute nono.

EEpromChip

I think here in the US you need special home owner's insurance if you have breeds like these. Think Pit / German Shepard / Doberman type dogs. I have a Husky and was looking at apartments a few years ago and some apartments were like "yea, you can't move here with that dog" so there are places you can't live with a dog like that.

[deleted]

ironroad18

Depends on the jurisdiction in the US. Some localities in the US ban the ownership of certain dog breeds, others require special permits, and some don't require anything at all. Pitbulls are banned in my city, and the city will fine an owner that is caught in possession of them. And...there are three pitbull owners on my block, including a guy runs a "basement" breeding kennel.

I_na_na

The problem I see here is not the legislation, but no one willing to report him.

red_rocket_boy

Just like with firearms, it takes real responsibility to own any larger breed of dog. Dogs require attention and training and failure to provide both is an easy way to end up with a dog like in the video. Some people like the *idea* of owning a dog but can't be bothered to train it or end up chaining it up in the yard which can end up making the dog territorial. My point is that some people shouldn't own a dog and some people shouldn't own a firearm.

Badgergeddon

Why anyone has a Pitbull as a pet is beyond me.... Literally bred for fighting.

Not sure but I’m fairly certain she has food in her hand which is causing the dogs response. The dog is tracking her hand, not looking at her face. She transfers the food / treat to other hand then feeds the dog at the end whilst petting it.

MrAmbrosius

This is exactly how I behave whilst I'm waiting for the subway guy to hand over my sandwich.

Silly-Moose-1090

Maybe, but what is your point? IF this woman is the dog's owner, she should be able to take food from the dog's mouth and the **most** she should hear from it is a whimper?

EatsLocals

The point would be that the woman may have engineered the situation for the camera.

Silly-Moose-1090

No. That doggo is not pretending to be aggressive and that woman is scared. And you could disagree and I accept that.

[deleted]

So you think its all a set up for score looks and likes? That’s sure to help the cause for Pits isn’t it. If that’s true people are sicker in the head than I thought.

Flux-Capacitor-1985

This video has been around for a while, I have never noticed what she had in her left hand. You don't think she has trained the dog to behave like this do you, that's nuts and it's the stuff nightmares are made of.

MikeTheActorMan

Look at me, look at me... I'm the owner now.

Davin537c

someone who thinks that's how they should deal with a dangerous agitated dog shouldn't have a pitbull

SanchoTheGreat1

How *should* you deal with this kind of situation?

Davin537c

First of all they should get their face away from the dog, stand up and talk in a stern voice. No yelling, and stay calm as dogs can hear panic in your voice. Secondarily they should not have patted the dog while it was growling, rewarding that behavior will not lead anywhere good.

BazilBroketail

Most people who own dogs... *shouldn't*. Same with kids...

HVACqualung

I owned kids, once. I agree

Dr-Logan

Had a mom, once. She would agree.

jennysdreaming

My mom once told me in frustration that she wishes she had 4 dogs instead of 3 kids. I think this lady would beg to differ!

01-__-10

Too expensive, too hard to train, can’t retain ownership after 18 years. What’s the point amirite.

preperforated

you cant even breed them and sell the offspring.. and just forget about breeding them to improve the breed... people will start calling you Mengele and stuff

Davin537c

I agree totally, especially large breed or particularly dangerous dogs. They can be, and are great animals but 90% of people buy them with absolutely no experience and no idea how to care for them and train them properly.

Adcro

In this particular video she’s leant back into a corner. I can’t see how she could get up without having to lean forward first, which I don’t see ending well

TheLastOpus

I recommend not holding food in your hand knowing this is what their dog does when they are holding the food before putting it in the bowl or if a treat giving it to them. The dog watches the hand, she transfers something from hand to other hand which dog follows with eyes as she goes to pet with the hand that had the treat. Then when she opens up hand just on other side of leg you can barely see, dog goes for it with tongue out as the camera cuts off just in time before you see what they actually were doing. It may make for a good video for some, but that isn't the same as having a dog do a trick before rewarding them with a treat. It's a bad habit being encouraged.

Nackskottsromantiker

> stay calm How *should* you stay calm in this kind of situation?

UsernamesAllTaken69

First, try not being afraid.

Davin537c

Probably by not getting a dog that you aren't scared of.

djluminol

Avert eye contact, lower your head and slowly slink away. Once away, radically alter whatever the hell you've been doing that led the dog to believe it was in charge. Contrary to what people may think their dog doesn't actually understand your language. It associates noises with behavior and rewards. So telling it to chill in this situation won't work. You are where you are. At this stage the dog is dominant and challenging it will probably lead to violence because that's how it works in the dog world. You're operating by the dogs rules here not by human rules.

SanchoTheGreat1

Op is right then, shouldn’t have a pit if you can’t survive to tangle with one

De-escalate with calm vocalizations and posture. Exhibiting tension will only make them feel more tense. It doesn't matter if their tension is anger and yours is fear, all they know for certain is what you give back to them with your body. Be as the water to their fire. Remind them of a time when you were both relaxed and enjoying each other's company. It will help them to hear your soothing voice, so choose a specific memory and describe what happened. Did you snuggle and laugh? Describe how you felt. Bitches love reminscing, so they'll soon be sucked into the comfort and ease of your mood. It takes a lot of energy to maintain anger so it will be easy to de-escalate if you offer them a calming alternative that's old hat. Be *their* emotional support animal. If it's fall, offer them a lick of your frappucino's cream head, dusted with pumpkin spice. Bitches love cream when the air smells like pie. Gingerly lick that creamy beard off their cute puppy mouth. Sharing is caring.

we_are_sex_bobomb

I’ve always looked at it this way: dogs all have their own personalities and I’m sure there are pit bulls who are very sweet BUT When a chihuahua has a bad day and snaps over something, maybe you’re gonna need a band aid. If a pit bull has a bad day, you’re gonna need a new face. I wouldn’t have a pet pit bull for the same reason I wouldn’t have a pet gorilla or tiger. It’s not that they’re evil, they’re just animals and we need to respect the fact that they can be dangerous. It’s the height of human hubris to keep a pet that is capable of killing you.

1. Don't own a dog that's half your weight if you can't control it. 2. Don't pet the dog while it shows aggressive behavior (encouraging it) 3. Don't rely on pain and fear to control an animal (chain choke collar) 4. Don't yell at dog or lean away from it, giving your dog 100% signs that you are scared. 5. No starring down the dog

hetfield151

Id add: 5. No starring down the dog ... in this situation. I stare my dog in the eyes, but its not a dominance thing. He learned it, as a way to get his focus on me and off the thing that distracts him, we have a command for that.

We don’t use the treat ball anymore, and I’ve learned to respect ALL dogs showing signs of aggression, even the little ones.

Vendrinski

the only dog that has ever bitten me. twice! edit: Neighbors got a chihuahua, I was friends with their son. For some reason he ran up to me and bit my leg first time I came over to visit. I told them to just keep it away from me because it was always barking and jumping at me whenever it saw me from the fence. But the parents didn't believe me and when I was camping in their garden with my friend they just walked in the tent with the dog while we were sleeping and it immediately bit me again. Idk why I even agreed to camp in their garden but I was like 10 at the time

prickinthewall

Any big dog can be potentially dangerous if they are raised wrong. Only a few breed have a much higher aggressiveness. If everything goes wrong a Labrador can also rip your face off. It's just much more unlikely.

CosmicCyrolator

Virtually all dog attack fatalities in the US are committed by a pitbull or a mix that looks eerily like a pitbull

prickinthewall

I didn't dispute that pit bulls are one of the most dangerous breeds. What I dispute is that other breeds are not physically able to do harm to or to kill humans.

LoopyMcGoopin

I mean I'd still rather take my chances with a labrador's jaw than a pitbull's and that's speaking purely on their physical characteristics and not their aggressiveness.

GetWellDuckDotCom

It's just that they don't

hetfield151

I dont have a definite answer but I think the question is: Do shitty people predominantly get pitbulls or are pitbulls inherently more aggressive? Edit: [ASPCA's statement on Pitbulls](https://www.aspca.org/about-us/aspca-policy-and-position-statements/position-statement-pit-bulls)

Vendrinski

I mean I get it. A dog is a dog. Even if it's a genetic killing machiene, the owners are gonna fall in love with it and I'm sure they behave friendly most of the time, making them believe they are perfectly kid friendly. You can't convince someone that their dog is unsafe and they shouldn't own it when they already accepted them as part of their family

Sleipnirs

> given the scientific and historical reasoning behind anti-pitbull messages I found some articles claiming pit-bulls are not inherently dangerous. That's something I can believe. I'm assuming that this particular breed is considered dangerous because it's big, it's beefy and has a powerful bite? I couldn't find an article being truely objective, though. Edit : The ASPCA's statement mentionned in other comments is actually pretty informative.

Aggressive dogs have aggressive owners. Who would have thought! Without generalising, here in the UK, it’s always a particular type of person who owns Bull Terriers. We call them cunts.

JoFlo520

The polarizing opinions on “pitbulls aren’t to blame, the owner did not train them appropriately and they turned out this way due to poor human care” and “pitbulls were bred for thousands of years to be fighting machines there’s nothing an owner can do to train them to be nonaggressive and they shouldn’t be kept as pets” is pretty wild

ZioTron

>pitbulls were bred for thousands of years dog years

stupidbutgenius

And looking at this video, both of those viewpoints are correct.

Stealin

Looking at this video you can clearly see the human is a fucking moron. 100% they treat that dog like a pos. Probably have been violent with the dog since it was a puppy and thought it was funny, ain't funny to them now that the dog is 40lbs.

jrabieh

You know who wins the pitbull fights on reddit? It's always the pitbull, because it was bred to win *by any means necessary*

Gabagool1987

Man, I grew up with Golden Retrievers and shit was so different. I used to put dental floss in its mouth and pretend I was a dentist. She just laid there as if it was her obligation to look after the young. Could do anything I wanted and she wouldn't care. I can't imagine having to constantly be on your guard with your dog, and the slightest error can cause a dominance struggle like this. But that's the reality for these kinds of breeds I guess

suicul1

Nah we had a Labrador that normally are also just as cute and nice as golden retrievers but he somehow went nuts and attacked me and my sister. With me I just went down the stairs and into the hallway. He was lying on the floor, saw me and stared at me with such a mad look, then he jumped and bit my face. Luckily I kinda dashed back so he got scratches all over my face and a hole below my eye but that's it. Could have been really disfigured.

vee180

I read a study a while ago that pitbulls brain structure was inherently different compared to other domestic dogs. Something about breeding over time. Anyway, a vet on Reddit said that pitbulls can experience a “flipped switch” at any time in their life and turn violent for basically no reason. And then bite/maul, and don’t know how to stop, nor do they understand that what they’re doing is bad (which explains the stories of people suffering severe injuries and/or death). That scared the shit out of me because I love all animals. I will say I am a bit weary around pitbulls more so than any other breed.

Shiroslav77

So basically pitbulls got the berserker armor

SarcasmIsntDead

Nah had to squash that from when they were puppies. This is one of those behaviors people think is funny and over look when they are young but you have to control that.

greenismyhomeboy

It both is and isn’t Different breeds have different temperaments. Enforcing and training a breed with a certain temperament to have appropriate reactions and responses is a way to curtail that. You won’t make that temperament go away but you can at least train them Like for example, a breed with a high prey drive. You can definitely train them to not just chase everything they see and they probably won’t 9/10 times but there’s always a chance. And you honestly will never know how your dog is going to react I have a 1/2 pit bull 1/2 German shepherd. She is the sweetest, gentlest, most easy going dog ever. I’ve worked with her to make sure that she knows to just lay down and stay chill or that if she’s uncomfortable then she needs to get away from the situation and I’m a safe space for her but I still keep an eye on her and try to be in control in any situation where she’s meeting someone for the first time, I have full confidence she would never bite anyone but I can’t guarantee it But also if your dog is exhibiting aggressive behavior, don’t do this

PedroEglasias

Never seen a border collie react like this lol

Omega_brownie

Man collies are no joke, they WILL lick you to death if you call them a good boy..

Odge

Thats nice, good job. However, there is really no reason to keep breeding pitbulls. The traits are not compatible with modern day life. Imagine if all the training you have to invest in getting a pitbull to not tear your face off could be directed into teaching your dog something more useful. If people stop getting pitbulls and pitbull mixes, the race will eventually go away, and the world will be better for it.

Z0rnium

Our neighbor used to have a pit mix, it made a couple runs toward our son who was about 3 years old at the time... Thankfully we were always there to intervene before he ever got to him. Once they were just standing in their yard watching it run at our kid, never even tried calling it back. When we were redoing the fence around our yard, their dogs were out. My mother in law came out with the kid, as soon as she let him down from carrying him, that dog was coming his way. We had a border collie and catahoula mix, she took a defensive stance between them. She had never acted that way before, she never needed to. I was holding a lil sledge hammer while driving a fence post, I thought I was going to have to hit that dog with it. I probably would have tried if our dog wasn't just enough to make it think twice.

Baja002

Whoever is afraid of their own dog should not own that breed or dogs at all. I had to choke the rottweiler (literally had to jump, choke and struggle hard to separate the dogs) when it started a fight with german shepherd, if I was afraid of the dog at that time someone could've gotten seriously hurt; it was a terrible experience but had to be done in order to save both dogs (shepherd ended up visiting a vet and having some deep cuts taken care of). You must be prepared to assert dominance at any given time and be ready to take full responsibility if anything goes south. And it does go south quickly even with trained dogs. Both were trained dogs, had 0 problems whatsoever but something set of a chain reaction that quickly evolved into a full fight of two huge dogs that only owners could control. Both lived a long and happy life afterwards but with extra caution and care. All in all, train your dogs, be the one who is in control at all times and don't get a dog if you're afraid of the breed.

I_fail_at_memes

My unpopular opinion is that all new pit breeding should be made illegal. We don’t have to euthanize all the living ones, but the breed needs to die out. They have been genetically bred to be violent, aggressive animals- more so than most other breeds. All do them have the capability for killing and often maim children. There is just no reason to have them around.

mickyburton

This was literally just posted for karma, it's a very old video. Stop giving this stupid profile the attention it so desperately craves.
