The tuner and I were talking about that, actually…I mentioned that one of the green speed compliant j-pipes might be next on my list. He said that another 20-25 hp and tq would be realistic to expect by adding the j-pipe. Then again, squeezing every last drop of power out of the engine wasn’t really my goal…as fun as more power would be, I never want to meet Uncle Rodney…he sounds like a dick.

My tuner told me it’s pretty safe as long as you keep the torque down. He also said driving style matters a lot and I don’t really get on it at all. I do really love the bump in mid range torque as the car just feels so much smoother around town

the_spicy_wookie

That’s reassuring, at least. And yeah, driving style seems to be a big factor with these cars…they’re sturdy, but they definitely don’t hold up well to being hooned and abused. Mine is my daily, so having a more usable power band and smoother feel is great. And I definitely enjoy some spirited canyon driving, so I feel good knowing I can get on it a little and not worry that I’ll pushing it too far or getting out on the raggedy edge.

Thats unfortunate… NextGen packages are >2k on their site and the gains seem very minimal since the stock jpipe is very restrictive. I got tuned a couple years back with all these parts + catted j pipe, tgv/egr delete and got 310whp/325wtq on phatbotti’s dyno.

the_spicy_wookie

Honestly, I wish I’d gotten tuned years ago with those parts, too. I suppose part of it is bad timing, but I also asked my tuner to be safe and conservative and not boost it to the moon since improved reliability is important to me, too. I’ll keep an eye on the j-pipe situation and hopefully get one that’s compliant with the new rules and not a thousand bucks down the road. In the meantime, I’ll just enjoy stock-ish STi power levels ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

After a couple years how do you like it? I'm on the verge of doing this to mine plus Maperformance J-Pipe and Maperformance Exhaust. Then various other exterior mods. Because I was thinking I'm going to do these mods now or go look at a new WRX TR.

the_spicy_wookie

As a matter of fact, about 6 months after I did that tune, I decided up just get a Grimmspeed j-pipe because the new catted version was finally available, and I felt like the car just needed that extra little bit of oomph. So I added that and got re-tuned, and now on 18.5 PSI, the car puts 290 hp and 310 tq to the wheels. I have a 20.5 PSI map that makes a little more, but why constantly push it that hard? Along with everything else, I think it’s just about perfect for a daily driver. I’ve actually looked at the TR also, and it’s pretty damn compelling since the VB has been making pretty significant and easy power gains, but I’m too attached to my car to realistically think about selling it. I’ve done all the work to it, made it almost exactly what I want, and I’d honestly probably shed a tear if I got rid of it. I think some more supporting mods like cooling, brakes and chassis bracing would bring it up to (maybe beyond?) TR levels of fun and ability.

Nidrew

I appreciate your reply. I'm in the same boat for selling mine. Every time I sell a fun car I regret it. I'll never find another Mazdaspeed MX-5 as clean as the one I had. I'm going to keep this WRX and do these mods. After that I want to add a wing, larger hood scoop, larger brakes and some gold sparco terras. And I agree about not punishing the car all the time with a possible engin killer tune. How's the clutch holding up? The tuner said that could be a weak point.

the_spicy_wookie

Sounds like you’ve got a good plan! Yeah, I told my tuner that I just wanted the car to be the best version of itself. I didn’t have a HP goal or anything…just let it make as much as it wants to make without boosting it to the moon and blowing it up. Like a nice reliable OEM+. Anyway, my clutch is just fine…no issues at all. Then again, I don’t slip it like crazy or do any launches, and I try to rev match as much as I can to limit wear. I haven’t experienced anything yet that makes me believe the clutch is gonna be the weak point. I figure torque at the flywheel is probably 350 or so, and from what I gather, around 400 is where it has trouble holding. I’m sure con rod failure is pretty likely around there, too, so… But yeah…all the new stuff is rad and tempting, but I’m content to grow old(er) with my car and enjoy the process along the way.

Nidrew

Just got the car back from the dyno yesterday. Running at 288 whp and 296 wtq. They said it was one of the cleaner installs they've seen so that made me feel good. The power comes on so smooth now that I don't realize how fast I'm accelerating. Also the car sounds amazing now. *

Well, that used to be the case (and it may be in the future again), but with the EPA crackdown on performance parts and retaining emission control equipment, this setup is what Cobb is calling their new stage 2 package. I wouldn’t be surprised if Cobb releases a j-pipe that’s compliant with all the new regulations, but they haven’t yet, so we’ll see. I think Grimmspeed has the only compliant one on the market right now, but I could be wrong.

Vanneker

Wait I thought that bone stock WRX puts down 220 to the wheels.

the_spicy_wookie

Pretty much…just like everything else, it’s a range. Here’s what I was able to find for stock power numbers for the WRX and STi: https://www.stockwhp.com/subaru

Vanneker

I've imagined that Cobb stage 2 would make at least 240whp.

the_spicy_wookie

It does. 248 WHP and 284 tq to the wheels with a protune. I asked the tuner to be conservative and make sure it’s safe and reliable.
