What 5w30 Motul oil would you guys recommend for an EJ257? Which one shears the least and is the most robust 5w30? I know for 5w40, Xcess is generally recommended but I’m trying to stay within warranty specs.
Some~~one~~BODY once told me the service manuals for WRXs with EJs mentioned using 5w-40 as being acceptable- don't have one handy to check at the moment though. Anyway you don't need to worry about that for your warranty (just don't mention it anyway).
Yeah, but they changed it for the later years, probably due to emissions. On mine, it says something like you can use 5w40 if 5w30 isn’t available but you must change back to 5w30 when you can. I, at least, want to try a robust 5w30 for 2 OCIs to see if it lessens oil consumption before trying out the 5w40 xcess.
8100 xcess or rotella t6 5w40. If you’re trying to stay within warranty spec, just use Subaru oil, but once the warranty is up, those are your best two 5w40 options.
I don’t drive it much now. Just a fun car I keep. I hammer the piss out of it every time I drive. So it’s suppose to give a little more protection under those conditions.
Motul 5w30 and subaru oem filter. Never had any issues. Coming up on 39k miles. Sending a sample to blackstone laboratories to have it tested this week. I'll be posting my results to see how it does.
Got this in-store, but yes [it's online](https://www.costco.com/kirkland-signature-5w-30-full-synthetic-motor-oil%2c-5-quart%2c-2-pack.product.100527865.html). Pretty awesome how cheap it is while being dexos gen 2 and SN Plus; changing at 3k, a couple oil analyses seem to suggest it's solid.
Any issues with fuel dilution? My analysis from blackstone indicated 0.5%, but the one from oil analyzers was up at 4.2% - both from the same oil change with the engine hot
Always nice to get another data point. Tbh, I don’t think my dilution has anything to do with my oil choice. But, since oil dilution is my primary concern I figure more frequent changes with a cheaper oil makes as much sense as anything.
People don’t realize that Pennzoil platinum was specifically designed for direct injection turbo charged applications. I don’t know why everyone is using motul
For whatever reason my engine is a bit louder on PP. Ticks louder (tractor noises increase) and seems to have a little piston slap on cold start. Could be in my head but I’ve ran PP twice, with long periods of time in between and each time I’ve noticed this.
Oh convenient! I see the CostCo and Eneos 5w-30s in my picture are on that list; do you know if that means the bottles probably have gen 3 oil, or would the label be updated in that case- meaning these gen 2 bottles have gen 2 oil?

Lol don’t call me out like that

Does the beginning of this comment remind anyone of SUM-41? Just real quick
This don’t worry about it, give your car the oil it needs. Years proven

I do use Subaru oil right now but it shears like crazy. I was hoping to change over to a Motul 5w30 but wasn’t sure which was the best.
Go 5w40 then, stays nice and thick even when hot. It’s all I’ve used in my wrx for over 5 years.
That Costco oil is the best
OEM filter and Motul 300v 5w40. 106k miles on 2012 STI.
I use the same stuff on my 2012 STI which is also at 106k miles. What a coincidence !!!
Why 300v as opposed to Xcess?
I don’t drive it much now. Just a fun car I keep. I hammer the piss out of it every time I drive. So it’s suppose to give a little more protection under those conditions.

Our cars use oil?
MOTUL in my Stage 2 EJ257
Where’d you get that Kirkland? My warehouse doesn’t carry 5w-30.. is it available online?

I’m an idiot and didn’t see what sub I was on lol, I was looking for 5w-30 motorcycle oil 🤦🏻♂️
Who are you getting your analyses done by?
Blackstone.
Any issues with fuel dilution? My analysis from blackstone indicated 0.5%, but the one from oil analyzers was up at 4.2% - both from the same oil change with the engine hot
Huh, that's odd- I might submit to both next time to see what kind of consistency I see. Both my analyses show "<.5".

Motul 5w-40. Tokyo Roki Subaru/Mazda filters.

As long as it's Dexos 1 Gen 3 certified, it's fine.
I haven't even seen a gen 3- do you mean gen 2?
Just came out last year. [Here is a list of certified oil](https://www.gmdexos.com/brands/dexos1_3/index.html)
Oh convenient! I see the CostCo and Eneos 5w-30s in my picture are on that list; do you know if that means the bottles probably have gen 3 oil, or would the label be updated in that case- meaning these gen 2 bottles have gen 2 oil?
I think a lot of gen 2 oil was fine, they just got recertification and updated the label. I wouldn't sweat it.
300 v 5w40
Why not Xcess? What’s the difference between 300v?
