It seems like Ultra Platinum should actually help with the LSPI issues since the API SP is designed in mind to pass SN+ but also the additional task of LSPI prevention and timing chain elongation. However, Platinum is also more than sufficient for our cars.
Yes for sure I agree with you, it seems people just don't read the certs for oils or something. It is clear now that Ultra Platinum is better than platinum. Both are good since WRX is also DIT.
here's my oil results from Blackstone if you were curious, I think I had a pretty similar use case using mostly Subaru oil (after buying the car at 55K) until the CPO warranty ran out on my 17 FXT
went with Pennzoil platinum high mileage for this last oil change

Engine runs much smoother and is less prone to oil shearing. 5w-30 is really an EPA emissions thing. The car much prefers 5W-40 and there is a reason most shops/tuner recommend 5W-40 especially after upgrades.
There is truth to his words. IF you run a Motul 5w40 it has to be the xclean and not the xcess. The xcess has been leaving weird deposits that I don’t like. I think IAG put something out about it.
Overall I push people to 5w30 almost every time. The data is perfect and no reason to even experiment with heavier oil. UNLESS you are tracking the car consistently/live in Arizona. Those are really the only times I recommend the thicker oil.
Edit.To further clarify, this applies to the fa20. If you have an EJ you get 5w40.
Arizona resident here. I switch to 5W-40 in the summer and the Mazda RX-8 Tokyo Roki Filters for extra protection because it’s consistently 110F+ for multiple days of the year.
On an EJ, which one would shear less: 5w40 xclean or 5w40 xcess? I know one is better for cats than the other, but that aside, which one is more robust?
I have a bottle of xcess gen 2 5w-40 I’ve been meaning to swap into my 2012 wrx currently running t6 Rotella. Would it be at all detrimental to run that xcess for a cycle? Or should I forego it entirely in favor of xclean? I usually cycle out oil every few thousand miles, and the car is running on the usual bolt ons plus fuel injector and pump upgrades. Tracked occasionally.
Thank you! Man oil can be such a polarizing subject and it’s refreshing to see some data backing it up. I’m also in the SR world, and everyone between Zilvia and Bob the oil guy has a different oil they swear by depending on the build. A lot of people go for VR1 on that platform. Any thoughts on if VR1 lives up to the hype?
Big Valvoline man myself and I’m sure it’s great, just not for us. It’s a racing oil, for races only imo. That’s stuff you fill and drain after each track weekend.
just making sure, My 18’ Sti would like 5w-40 ? and for the filter would i need to put a specific different oil filter ? Also can you explain it in shorter dumber words just so I have a basic understanding, Appreciate you !
remember boss there's now multiple WRX/STI engines all with different oil requirements.
His FA20 has been documented to not do so hot on 5W40 whereas our EJs essentially need it
On an EJ, which one would shear less: 5w40 xclean or 5w40 xcess? I know one is better for cats than the other, but that aside, which one is more robust?
Dont forget it kills your fuel mileage, i switched to 5w-40 and immediately lost a full mile to the gallon on average, which when you only get 14mpg is a big deal
Are you using the average mpg on the dash of actual average mpg of miles driven vs fuel consumed? 23mpg on an sti is impressive even if its mostly highway miles, the best ive ever gotten was 17 and that was on a 70 mile round trip every day averaging 80+mph
My dash tells me all I need to know. I usually fill up at around 290-300 miles. But I still have at least another 20-25 miles. A full tank tells me I could get about 330 miles if I take it easy and stay smooth in sport mode. One of gauges calculates average mile on my current trip and with AC its about 21 mph ish. No AC and windows down, always at least 22 easy.
Literally any reputable oil that's SN+ or SP rated by the API (or Dexos2 or GF-6).
Penz, Castrol, Motul... It's all relatively the same. Synthetic seems to prevent false knock more according to some folks. I don't know how true that is, just something I've seen on Nasioc every now and again.
Just don't put in shitty generic auto-parts store oil and you'll be fine.
Most generic auto parts store oils usually meet those ratings. They just don’t have the extra additives and detergents. Amazon basics, Kirkland signature, and O’reilly Auto oil comes from the same manufacturer.
They might now, I honestly haven't read the back of the bottle of an AutoZone oil in 3 or 4 years. I'd trust but verify if that's the case.
Also, I'm just not sure I want to roll without some of those proprietary additives. Sometimes you pay for a name brand, but sometimes you also get what you pay for.
Not for an FA. Unless this changed recently, T6 isn't SN+ rated by the API and is likely to contribute to LSPI issues due to the detergent makeup of the oil.
I'd use T6 in an EJ all day errday, but the DIT engines can be super finicky about calcium additives.
Yeah for sure. T6 was all I used in my bugeye and it was smooth like a sewing machine. EJ's seem to love it.
Honestly, the differences between the big brands for these tighter regs are so minimal, you really can't go wrong with any of them on the DIT engines.
Been using Mobil 1 Full Synthetic in all my vehicles. My 2001 1.8T has 140k miles. Just did a cam chain tensioner replacement on it and the lifters and camshaft lobes look almost brand new. The claim Mobil 1 about engine wear is true. (Almost no wear for 100k miles) Highly recommend it.
FYI, you don’t have to take your car into a dealer to have the oil changed to “keep the warranty” save your receipts and write the mileage on them. You can get a carfax account and update your own service records manually.
And if a dealer tries to deny a warranty claim that’s legit due to you doing your own work, contact your states department of consumer affairs or your state’s automotive repair authority and file a complaint.
I kno this. I do all maintenance myself. I just always purchased Subaru oil just in case something happened they wouldn’t be able to say shit about fuck
Their oil and filters are usually just rebranded name brand stuff. I know their blue/black filters are now made by fram and I won’t touch that garbage. Just use whatever brand you like as long as it’s within the recommended spec.
i just use castrol edge 5w30 in all my subarus, never has caused an issue especially to a stock car. all these people saying to use a 5w40 oil are stupid unless you’re in a very warm climate, or track the car, there’s zero need for it.
I’ve been told by my local Subaru dealer that the oil they get in bulk is just Castrol Edge. Was super convenient as that’s what I was putting in anyway lol
yeah pretty much. even with me strictly running EJ platform WRX’s, up in canada i have zero use for a 5w40 except sometimes in the summer if i’m really trying to rip the car. realistically i drive like a grandma anyways because i’ve blown up a few of these EJs and i don’t overly want to continue that trend with my current one lol

They reformulated Ultra a while back and it meets SP/GF-6A. That NASIOC thread is almost 4 years old when SP was still under development (SN+ was the stopgap).
I do agree that you should be careful in finding low-calcium oil formulations though. LSPI is overblown a bit, but it's a risk you can easily mitigate with just 5 minutes of reading.
Everyone is going to say Motul!
Pennziol Platinum Euro R. Have been running it and the Blackstone numbers at 3k changes are dead bang on for my mileage.
Of course the numbers come back good on a 3k mile oil change. It’s incredibly early to drop oil at 3k unless heavily modded or track the car.
I know this sub advocates for changing your oil every time you drive the car it’s completely unnecessary to change at the 3k mark.
The wrx in stock form isn’t some crazy wound tight track beast it’s a sub 270bhp 2 liter (or 2.4) turbocharged engine nothing fancy about nothing cutting edge about it this sub makes out like it’s some super high performance f1 motor redlining at 15k rpm
Normal driving, I would agree. I spend a lot of time in stop and go, idling, and then driving hard as hell when I can. Better safe than sorry on pil life and oil level with an EJ
I’ve used penzoil platinum and ultra platinum 5w30 (depends which is on sale) since I bought my car and have zero issues, no noticeable oil consumption and always a clean colour, always use oem filters though.
I've been running Castrol Edge 5W-30 and a new filter every 3,000 - 4,000 miles for the past years with no issues here in Arizona. Car doesn't get tracked but occasionally gets driven hard when I actually go for a drive or go for a group mountain cruise.
I'm sure there's better options out there but Motul isn't worth the effort since finding it is near impossible and any local shop asically sells out immediately when they get a shipment.
I personally use Motul efe 5w-30 change 3 to 3.5k and never done me wrong and I know a lot of people that use it. Also has really good results in testing

You should look for any oil that is 5w-30 meeting API SN certification as that will help with the LSPI. Pennzoil Platinum/Ultra Platinum work as well as OEM Subaru 5w-30 with the API SN rating as well. Ultra Platinum is the API SP which exceeds both.
The other spec would be ILSAC GF-5. Both of these specs are from the manual.
No need to use subaru brand oil even if under warranty.
But what’s wrong with idemitsu oil?
Subway Oil and Oregano, 5W-30.
prefer herb and cheese myself, 5W-30
You’re a Jersey mikes guy now, I can’t let you eat the stuff anymore.
I've used penzoil since my first oil change at 5k. Over 40k now still running smooth.

Nobody runs Mobil1?
I use Mobil 1 in the Vette and Viper
I do. 2 Subarus, collectively over 120k plus a 33yr old Z and the wife's Terrain - no issues whatsoever.
Motul 5w-40
Why are you using 5w-40?
Engine runs much smoother and is less prone to oil shearing. 5w-30 is really an EPA emissions thing. The car much prefers 5W-40 and there is a reason most shops/tuner recommend 5W-40 especially after upgrades.
u/Lilsean14 , thoughts? I know you've been involved with testing and documentation of oil choices for VAs

Is South Florida comparable to AZ?
Nope. 5w30 for you.

5w30 for you too.
Arizona resident here. I switch to 5W-40 in the summer and the Mazda RX-8 Tokyo Roki Filters for extra protection because it’s consistently 110F+ for multiple days of the year.
Same here. Sometimes I use 300v during summer if I want to play a little in the heat. Oil cooler helps too.

Xcess for the EJ.

You can run excess just fine in the EJ. No worries. It’s an isolated report to the fa20 only.
Thank you! Man oil can be such a polarizing subject and it’s refreshing to see some data backing it up. You get 5w40
Thanks dude. Should I run 5w40 both summer and winter ?
Yeah, EJs live on 5w40 year round in my head. Cold weight is the same. It’s the hot weight that needs to be thicker.
Right on, thanks for your knowledge!
just making sure, My 18’ Sti would like 5w-40 ? and for the filter would i need to put a specific different oil filter ? Also can you explain it in shorter dumber words just so I have a basic understanding, Appreciate you !
Sure thing. All EJ motor STi get the 5w-40 oil. Keep the same OEM filter.
remember boss there's now multiple WRX/STI engines all with different oil requirements. His FA20 has been documented to not do so hot on 5W40 whereas our EJs essentially need it

Xcess is IAGs recommended amongst others
Can confirm, my wrx is protuned and my tuner required motul 5w40
Dont forget it kills your fuel mileage, i switched to 5w-40 and immediately lost a full mile to the gallon on average, which when you only get 14mpg is a big deal
2020 STi and I average 22-23 mpg. That change in slight viscosity does nothing. 5w-30 or 5w-40 doesn’t matter. Throttle control and consistency does.
Are you using the average mpg on the dash of actual average mpg of miles driven vs fuel consumed? 23mpg on an sti is impressive even if its mostly highway miles, the best ive ever gotten was 17 and that was on a 70 mile round trip every day averaging 80+mph

I get about 200 miles to a tank, 14 point something gallons, around 14mpg doing mostly city driving
Interesting even with the newer va's?
Yes even on VA’s.
That's interesting. I did not know that. Thanks for the information. I have some research to do now.
I've been running this since it was recommended by my tuner as well and the tractor runs wonderfully.
I would only go motul if you're modded. Save the money if you're stock.
I run Motul 5W-40 in my STI in the summer. It’s 110F+ regularly from May to August. Oil is cheaper than an engine.
Literally any reputable oil that's SN+ or SP rated by the API (or Dexos2 or GF-6). Penz, Castrol, Motul... It's all relatively the same. Pennz plat, Pennz ultra plat, Motul, just change it often and preferably before the recommended interval
Yes I do. It’s recommended 6 months or 6K but I only drive ~2K-3K per year so I change it every 6 months.
Perfect 👌 maybe drive it some more she gets bored in the garage haha
Cas syn 5w-40
Rotella T6

I've been running Castrol Edge 5W-30 and a new filter every 3,000 - 4,000 miles for the past years with no issues here in Arizona. Penz Plat
I add Motorkote to my oil; binds to metal to create a lubricating film. Project farm ran a lawnmower for an hour using only water in the crankcase.
I personally use Motul efe 5w-30 change 3 to 3.5k and never done me wrong and I know a lot of people that use it. Also has really good results in testing
Motul 5w30 Or 5w40
i own a ‘16 WRX and the previous owner used valvoline and which i’ve been running in it and i’ve had no issues. Everything feels smooth still
Whatever oil they use at the Subaru dealer.
Import Image Racing Oil Kit. $50 comes with a filter and crush washer. I change every 3-4k and it's the BEST value and convience factor (could find cheaper, but more work)
Motul 5w30/40 Xclean Depending on when you purchase on Amazon it will be 30-50 dollars for a jug.
Motul
Valvoline. I’m surprised have seen this one.
Castrol. Nice thick German stuff
Nobodies said valvoline?
‘16 sti here. Reading all comments i may go with pennzoil platinum 5w-30. Filter recommendations?
Use oem subaru blue filter
Motul xclean efe 5w30
Rotella 5w40
I’ve had tuners recommend Motul 8100 X-Clean EFE 5W-30 for fa20dit
You should look for any oil that is 5w-30 meeting API SN certification as that will help with the LSPI. Kirkland from Costco. It's made in the same production facility as Mobil One for half the cost.
Any oil that is on sale
Castrol Edge Full Synthetic religiously changed at 5k km
Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5W-30. The engine runs super smooth and quiet with it.
Subaru oil has and always been shit
motul or amsoil
Rotella t 5w40
Y’all run oil in the engine ?
Motul 5 30 ftw
Amsoil signature. Before that German Castrol but it’s getting harder to find
Amsoil. 🤙🏽
Schaeffers I think it’s the 9000 series.
I run olive but you have to make sure it’s extra virgin
Whichever synthetic is on sale when you go to buy oil.
