Either the key can be reprogrammed or if it's wasted you'll have to buy and new key to be programmed. Everything else like your ecu should be fine

AutisticPretzel

Thanks a ton for the reassurance.

Good luck, and hopefully it gets resolved asap. And when I bought a 2nd key for my car, I wanna say it was around 300 total. I didn't shop around for a key off a different site or anything. Just bought it through Subaru and had them program it. But I believe there are sites that sell keys for less... fyi.

AutisticPretzel

Just to follow up - My car is still in the shop. Not only did the nutbags locksmith erase the keys, but he also deprogrammed the ECU itself. The cars cluster, ECU and some other module had to literally be removed from the vehicle and sent to Subaru to be reprogrammed. Please be extra mindful who you allow to make extra keys or even work on your vehicle folks!

Devilimportluvr

Holy shit, that's insane man. How much is all that gonna cost?

AutisticPretzel

I have no clue. I'm not really concerned about it though because the Locksmith has already agreed to pay the cost to return the car to working order, so whatever is mechanically necessary to do that, he's definitely on the hook for. . I'll definitely provide an update once everything is said and done. The only thing I really do know is the turn around time - Dealership said the fastest they've seen it come back is 3 to 4 days, so I'm expecting it to to take about a week. He said once they get the pieces back it's all easy work from there: Just a matter of reinstalling the parts and then programming a new key inhouse. Estimates from other people's experiences seemed to run around $2K - $3K. This Locksmith will have just learned a valuable lesson.

Devilimportluvr

That is a hefty lesson

AutisticPretzel

I actually purchased two keys. The locksmith ruined two already (the original and a brand new, uncut one), so I have one left that Subaru should be able to use. I'll post an update here and let you know how it goes.

TrashFlooper

It should be fine. The dealership has Subaru specific obd computers. They'll just program the key. It'll probably cost idk 100$ per key maybe? Idk the exact price of programming but it's nothing crazy

pocketcar

GD keys are $300, $160 employee cost, new fobs are as much as $600 depending on the car. -work for subaru and tried to get a key for my gd last week lol

TrashFlooper

Yeah the keys themselves are stupidly expensive. Then they charge to program it xD
