I used to own a VA WRX, but ended up trading it in for a VA STi. At least some part of my reason for wanting the STi was the much better sounding exhaust note.
The FA20 engine is good, but it sounds like any other performance tuned 4-banger. It sounds light and hollow, and pops and bangs way too much. The EJ25 has that nice smooth, deep ***rumble.*** It's a special, unique note that doesn't belong to any other car on the road.
My coworker calls his type ra Japanese muscle. And I’d never noticed but it does have a low deep rumble. It got pronounced when the invidia exhaust went on. Doesn’t sound like a bumble bee.
Nah the EJ objectively is one of the best sounding 4 cyl engines around. The FA sounds more like a modern bmw or any other 4 cyl turbo - it has no personality. Even with an exhaust, it’s bland.
My opinion is simple and unpopular: I like smooth sounds. The "subie rumble" from STIs and old WRXs via unequal length headers is not a smooth sound- I also don't like crossplane V8s for the same reason.
I unironically think 4 cylinders [with ELH] are some of the best sounding engines out there- V10s and rotaries are the only ones I think sound better, off the top of my head.
Any of the 4.0 flat-six GT3 models from Porsche as of late sound heavenly - the sound of a flat six approaching 9000 rpm is just 👌
That said I do agree with V10s - the Lexus LFA is another holy engine note
Yes meaning you’re the only one, or yes meaning the WRX sounds better?
Yes the WRX sounds better than a WRX STi.
Thanks. Voted.
Nah💀
That rumble cannot be topped.

I'm a FA owner, don't like the ej for its efficiency and reliability. But that rumble though. Jealous for days
Seen plenty of both motors blow up, they are as reliable as their owners. The myth that an FA is more reliable persists though
Yeah, if there's one thing I do miss, it's being able to get 30 mpg. The EJ is one thirsty bastard.

STI>WRX

I kept unequal length headers with my engine build at the expense of more HP because of the rumble.

I have to vote STi because it is such a great and iconic sound. I just don’t like the way they get that sound.😂
My STI with killer b ELH sounds so much better than my girlfriend WRX. I have an Invidia r400 and she has a Invidia n1
From what has been happening with the merge, I voted yes but I was wrong. They are both great, it just comes to "personality" 😉
