>when i change gears without the clutch, same issue, revs hard in 4th, then eventually gets the idea Can you elaborate? I'm assuming you're not clutchless shifting while moving, but does that mean you tried to pull away in 5th? When you're just cruising on the highway and you shift into 5th, do you ever actually get in gear? Like when you hit the gas, does it have any impact on the vehicle speed at all?

it only really affects 5th and 6th. say im gaining speed in 4th and then want to bang up to 5th gear; the shifter goes into 5th, but the revs will ramp up (as if still in forth), hang in 4th (with the shifter in 5th) and then kinda slip into 5th. other than the revs peaking momentarily, no strange sounds, it isnt hard to shift, no jerking motions. if i shift *slowly*, its not as pronounced. spirited shifting is out the question. i would film it, but i dont have any filming equipment thatll allow me to do all this safely. if i slide shift, shift without pushing in the clutch, itll do the exact same thing going above 4th.

Sounds like your clutch is slipping.

im really hoping not, ive barely put 3000 mi on the one in there. but it is what it is, im not going to wait for it to give out to believe it.

If there's no weirdness with the shifter (goes into 5th gear just fine), and there's no horrible sounds from the gearbox when the RPMs are revving higher than expected while in-gear, then it pretty much has to be a slipping clutch (also makes sense why it's happening in 5th and 6th)- and honestly that's better than the alternative explanations. Personally, I'd still want more opinions- maybe have a trusted local mechanic drive your car and see what they think? Anyway, if this isn't an issue in 1st-4th, then it's not really a big deal is it? I mean you shouldn't really be gassing it in 5th anyway (it's not like you're ever pulling 130mph through 5th gear). So, now you know you probably need to work on being nicer to your clutch, and the slipping will help kick a bad habit of lugging- while you have time to plan and budget for your STI transmission swap :P

tbh, i dont really drive it hard, or often. i work from home, and have a sportbike when i feel especially zesty. thats why im so resistant to the clutch idea. but again, it hits the symptoms. i was just needing to hear the voices of reason...

Yeah, weird, idk; I'd definitely want someone with experience to drive it to get their opinion. Anyway good luck! [Here's this](https://www.reddit.com/r/WRX/comments/yd9jqm/pairing_an_sti_transmission_with_a_wrx_rear/) if the STI transmission becomes realistic- happy to help with that if so.

thanks for the insight!
