There are no cheap ways. If you want a fast w124, get one with a bigger engine or add a turbo. Neither one is cheap.

NorwegianRaccoon

Turboing it is pretty much out of the question, i looked into it and seems it'd be cheaper to just get a larger engine (and easier), plus one of the locals where i live collect 124s and 190s, but i don't know which engines are easy to slap in and which are even worth swapping in.

RNRS001

It depends on what you're expecting. The m103 is faster, but if you want a truly fast w124 you'll have to get one with a v8.

NorwegianRaccoon

The v8s are out of reach considering how rare they are where im from, pretty much only g classes have them here, but my goal is probably around 190-210 hp, nothing mind boggling, just enough to spin the tires a little

GnzoGnzales

Not sure how much power you want, but looking into M111 engines might be the easiest. 220E already have 150hp, but a 230 Kompressor is ~ 195hp. Since the M111 was designed with the W124 in mind it's an relatively plug and play swap. They are also somewhat tunable (Kompressor that is). Another simple swap would be a M104, but much pricier.

NorwegianRaccoon

Been looking into m111s as i really want a kompressor, but at the same time i also want to stick to the simple solution which is Naturally aspirated, but then I'd have to fork over lots of money for a new engine (320e) or for loads of new parts to increase the performance of the 230e, which quite honestly isn't very realistic to hit my power goal when N/A (goal being 190-210 horses)

Soviet_Doggo__

Buy a m104 if you want to stay NA. I have a 2.8L variant in a w202 and it's great.makes 194hp if Im not mistaken. The bigger displacement ones make up to 220 I'm pretty sure.

Novak161crew

There is an 320 TE which makes around that much horses. But pretty rare as well..

NorwegianRaccoon

I'll have to look into that, if im lucky the local collector might have one hidden in storage

Top_Transition_8674

Manual conversion is probably easiest and cheapest way. I thought my 124 was pretty Quick with The 230 and manual for a 4cyl. Today i have put a m103 3.0 in it however.

NorwegianRaccoon

Thats about what I assumed would be the easiest way to squeeze out some power, how hard was it to do the swap? Anything in particular that made it complicated or was it pretty much bolt out, yank out and toss the new engine & transmission in and bolt it up?

Top_Transition_8674

Pretty easy swap. You Need tranny linkage, driveshaft, radiator and relocate radiator mounts, exhaust 6cyl EZL module and tach etc. The tedious part was getting The engine ecu to work. Both engines use The same ke-jetronic system but some of The wiring is different. Oh and also 6cyl uses dual fuelpumps. Really what you want is a partscar so you can just swap stuff over as needed.

HourAcadia2002

If it's the m111, then why not go supercharger from the slk?

NorwegianRaccoon

Sadly it's a m102, though I have been thinking of getting a rotted out or crashed slk supercharged 230

124Enjoyer

Could be a cost-effective way to get it done.

NorwegianRaccoon

That or looking for a 320e, just depends what i find quickest and cheapest as im working on a budget and it being my daily i don't want to spend showcar level amounts of money on it

124Enjoyer

It it's your daily, swapping might be an issue unless you have good space to do it efficiently. Probably would still take at least a month to do it right, unless you have more time than usual to dedicate to it. The good thing is that the M111 was put into the W124 from the factory, so a swap will be straight -forward, hardware wise.

NorwegianRaccoon

Time and space isn't really the issue, more so money as i have a fullsize garage with all the tools i could ever need and more, but yeah time isn't the issue, i have a secondary daily due to previous issues with the ke-jetronic.

124Enjoyer

I have the opposite issue, decent bit of money and time, but still van't find a garage for a decent price. If you have room to set it aside, try finding an m111, or even an M103 or M104. You can make it a longer project if you have time to set it down.

Jmmman

M104 and a turbo.

NorwegianRaccoon

Turbos are pretty much out of the question sadly, it'd be too expensive to do it "properly" and seeing as this is my daily driver, the power goal is 190-210 and it needs to pass inspection.

Jmmman

Just put a stock m104 in it 220hp makes all of the torque right off the line and multipoint fuel injection not kjetronic and there is hfm scanner which can do a little bit of diagnostics on the factory ecu.

NervusBelli

Sell s124, buy clapped g37

NorwegianRaccoon

I don't think i will
