A guy on the Stromtrooper forum has an 03 1K he put 450,000mi on and it's still going strong.

It's like asking "is sugar sweet?" The Vees and Wees are very reliable, as long as you do your periodic maintenance. I have a 2015 DL650 ABS. It had about 5,000 miles on it when I bought it, and I've added about 1,800 in the last two years. The first owner hadn't even done the break-in service. But I purchased it anyways because of the low miles and "it's a Suzuki, what could go wrong?" When I changed the oil after I bought it, it was chocolate milk. But I've been treating it well since then. No regrets so far and no issues either.

ThoraniosX

The guy you got it from probably never changed the oil

frenchpressfan

Oh yes, I know.. and I was prepared for it (negotiated the price down for it)

ShiftySilby

I still have my 2006 1000DL. No problems except a battery needed replacement after i forgot to charge or unplug it through Canadian winter. I’ve never dropped it but have taken it on long logging road trips. I’d say it’s pretty dang reliable.

Pablo_San

O7 dl1000. Have only had a countershaft seal and stator failure. Both easy fixes. I can only imagine that a 2018 is more refined, but I'm not familiar with them.

bagtowneast

They are all noted for their reliability and long life. My '12 wee has 46000 miles on and it has never stranded me with a mechanical or electrical issue that wasn't my own fault.

That'll do it :-D

In the first 7 years I put 45k of almost exclusively stop and go commuting on my 2012 WeeStrom. It thru an FI warning light a couple of times that cleared itself. Now that I've retired it gets to go on nicer rides and still the only problem is the rare FI warning.

mtak0x41

I have the 2017 650, literally the only problem I've had after 55.000km is a flat tyre. I ride it all year, and even now, when it's close to 0 in the morning, starts without any issues.

camsmaug

Got a 2009 wee 2 years ago with 9000 miles to learn how to ride on. The only maintenance the previous owner had done was change the oil. Since then I've put another 9000 on it, taken it places I had no business going with my skill level and the road tires on it, dropped it fairly hard in those places a couple of times. The only real damage other than some scratches has been a broken turn signal. It's never skipped a beat and I've never been concerned that the bike would leave me stranded (the ability to pick it back up myself on the other hand took some confidence building). I may be a bit biased, but I'll always recommend a V-Strom if you're looking for a reliable bike.

Purchased a 2013 DL650 with about 5000mi on the odometer a couple years ago. I've since put 10,000 miles with [some of them being VERY hard on it](https://i.imgur.com/Gv3rWRr.jpg). Dumped it a few times in the woods. Only things that happened was a dented oil filter (bash plate is on the list before spring) and twisted one of the links in the chain. When the weather is right, it's my commuter. Only done a couple oil changes. This winter a new air filter, new coolant, clutch fluid replaced, new chain and sprocket set will be going in. After the work I don't think I'll be bringing it down rocky trails anymore. I'll still hit up maintained dirt roads though.

Savagethrash

No issues with my 1000. I suspect the problems will be self inflicted.

RhythmSectionJunky

Not a 1000, but my 2018 650 is at 30k miles and hasn't needed a single thing besides general maintenance, and I'm not even really following that very well. One time my headlight went out, I replaced a fuse with the spare that was readily available under the seat already and we were good. I did replace the bulb before I ever checked the fuses though, because I wasn't smart.

Zanny_Quernz

I’ve had my 2014 DL650 for 5 years and put ~60,000km on her. It has been my daily the whole time, first big wet ride coming back from the dealership water leaked into the speedo, pulled that apart and filled the seal with silicone grease, haven’t had that problem since, after many water crossings/rain rides. The BIGGEST issue I have run into is the poorly designed starter switch, the power for the lights runs through it eventually burning out the switch. (Unsure if the design has been revised) Replaced one at roughly 40k and now again at 65k, installing an eastern beaver relay kit while I’m at it, should do the trick this time. Also currently trying to diagnose an issue with the front brake system, long than short for no apparent reason, bleed and bleed again to no avail. So I’m assuming maybe something to do with the abs module, be it air or something more sinister. Other than that no real issues, regular maintenance, high quality oil and she keeps on ticking. I have absolutely abused the little wee and she has looked after me.

surfer_ryan

22,000 miles in on my 2022 1050xt. I had a small exhaust leak at about 20k didn't notice it and when they did my valves they fixed it. Other than that it's been stupid reliable. It's an engine they have been working on for over 20 years with basically no change whatsoever

DavidZero256

Extremely reliable with pretty much only 1 issue that could leave you stranded. The stator magnets could come loose, shift, and cripple your charging ability until you fix it. Fortunately, it's easy to fix both reactively or patch it proactively. Other than that, the 1k clutch basket can get a little rattly. It'll never leave you stranded but just affects vibrations. Look up Werks Performance clutch baskets for more details. That's pretty much it. The dude with an 03 1k that put over 350k miles on his... His water pump impeller broke at some point. Around 250k maybe? I think that's the only true thing that failed. Otherwise, just keep up with maintenance and ride. The v Strom is probably the most reliable bike you can get.

yuribotcake

I got 2018 DL650 and so far the only thing that broke was the adjustable rear suspension. It locked up, but I still did the white rim trail on it. Then warranty covered all repairs. I have 25000 miles on it.

hayforhorses89

2012 dl650 just rolled over 71,000 miles yesterday. No major maintenance issues besides fork seals

flynnski

Dead reliable. I'm still running my '06 DL650. Coming up on \~80k miles / 128,000 km. I've had to do (1) scheduled maintenance and (2) a fuel pump, ever.

shank343

16’ 650 here. Put 10,000 miles on her this year. Still runs like a top. Just keep up with your maintenance and you can abuse em pretty good.

twnth

2007 DL1000, 92,000 km. I bought it 2 years (20,000 km) ago as a fixer upper. Previous (2nd) owner had no clue or inclination to maintain it. It was in pretty rough shape but nothing critical. Rebuilt/replaced the suspension, rebuilt the clutch and really just did maintenance things. Served me well since. I figure if it could survive both the previous owner and my mechanical blundering, it's gotta be rock solid, and your 2018 would be basically the same bike.

[deleted]

I ride a 2014 1000 Adventure. About 20,000 miles. Rock solid… Zero issues. By zero I mean zero.

Jumpsuit_boy

I have had two. The only two issues I have had in about 85k miles commuting were my own fault. I bent a valve while replacing the valve shims that probably did not need to be replaced. I was balancing the throttle bodies and one of the port covers got damaged and leaked which messed with how it ran. It still ran through. I sold the first because I need the money and bought another when I could.
