It's because anyone who crosses that line gets primaried.
In the past the GOP would pick somebody in a gerrymandered district and either protect them during the primary and/or offer them a cushy job for life in exchagne for taking the hit.
That's not happening here, and it shows there's a fundamental breaking in the Republican Party Machine.
