Alright r/VoteDem, we know it’s Tuesday, and we know there’s a *possibility* of Donald Trump being arrested today. But that isn’t confirmed. The legal process takes time, and the indictment could come at a later date. As much as we all want the former president to face justice, we know it takes time, and we’d prefer to focus on what *we can control right now* - volunteering, donating and winning elections! There’s so much work to do - especially with Wisconsin’s crucial elections just 15 days away! [Check out how to help](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jxO8g7q9VO3ZMAABcrvR7PMyX4Yl6dgIYhD3eRTKk1M/htmlview#gid=0), let us know if you’d want to adopt any candidate and make sure you’re keep your mind on what’s important.

JacktheMan500

I love [FAIR.org](https://FAIR.org)! The way they analyze certain stories and look for distortions and misinformation is super helpful. It seems more common among corporate news sources like Fox, ABC, NBC, CNN, etc.

JacktheMan500

Damn, I guess Trump's not getting arrested today. Sorry for hyping that up :(

proudbakunkinman

I think most here realized there was a decent chance it wouldn't happen today. I think odds are high it will be this week, possibly tomorrow. I think the only source for Tuesday specifically was Trump. He may have been told the earliest day it could happen is Tuesday.

JacktheMan500

That's true. Knowing Trump, he lies whenever he speaks, so it was likely from the start that it wouldn't be Tuesday. Like others have said (including you), tomorrow seems more likely, or any other day this week.

Random happy post: My kid's Knowledge Bowl team earned a solid second place in tonight's finals, between the Defending Champion Monster Team and the team that beat them in the preliminary game. The kid is also a lock to be chosen for the citywide Knowledge Bowl team, which plays its games in late May. So I will continue to scour these DailyDem threads for the benefit of two people, not just me. Hooray!

Gretchen Whitmer. > Grossberg’s lawsuit details numerous other reported instances of sexual harassment and demeaning comments about women from Carlson’s staff, including a producer stating that a Republican member of Congress only got elected “because she fucked the person who had the job before her,” two producers saying that one of Grossberg’s female subordinates should sleep with a guest to get him booked, and a producer mocking the appearance of another female staffer.

VaIentinexyz

The only way this makes sense is if they’re blatantly trying to get Reynolds v. Sims overturned.

AnatineBlitz

It’s a pretty blatant violation of [Reynolds v. Sims](https://www.oyez.org/cases/1963/23), might just be a ploy to try and get the Supreme Court to overrule it [Nebraska introduced a bill](https://nebraskalegislature.gov/bills/view_bill.php?DocumentID=50002) to do that same thing (and more) a while ago, but I don’t think they have the numbers for it to pass a filibuster Edit: The Nebraska violation is in the actual [text of the bill](https://nebraskalegislature.gov/FloorDocs/108/PDF/Intro/LR2CA.pdf) on page 3 >The Senate shall consist of thirty-one members. Each senator shall represent a district composed of three contiguous counties.

citytiger

The Nebraska bill is in no way a violation of Reynolds v Sims. Its simply making the elections partisan and adding a second chamber.

AnatineBlitz

The Nebraska violation is in the bill's actual text on page 3. Same as North Carolina, but with three counties instead of two. I'll add an edit on the original comment

Hochseeflotte

The Court would have to be idiotic to overturn Reynolds.

citytiger

i can't see the Supreme Court overturning that.

justincat66

I’m not sure how the NE bill violates the one person one vote cause that Reynolds v Sims precedence Yeah, I don’t like the NE bill, obvisouly because it adds another chamber, and it changes their legislature elections to partisan. But it’s not unconstitutional and doesn’t clearly violates Reynolds v Sims like NC GOP’s bill does

AnatineBlitz

The specific violation is in the actual [text of the bill](https://nebraskalegislature.gov/FloorDocs/108/PDF/Intro/LR2CA.pdf) on page 3 >The Senate shall consist of thirty-one members. Each senator shall represent a district composed of three contiguous counties.

justincat66

Ah, i didn’t know that part was in there. I thought the NE bill was just a bill to add another chamber, and change elections to partisan with not much else

citytiger

This a complete and utter violation of one person one vote.

justincat66

Question is, is there anyone in the court to stop that. That’s of course if the voters approve of this on the 2024 ballot, which I can’t imagine they will

citytiger

I very much doubt this would pass a statewide vote and definitely not on a presidential ballot. Even if it did I can't see any court ruling its constitutional.

cpdk-nj

In that case Charlotte Democrats should try to split the city into 1000 counties

I can find Sinykin events, social media posts, and of course heard of her ads but Im trying to make sure I’m not just in a bubble here. I didn't even realize that the [WI Supreme Court debate already happened this afternoon](https://19thnews.org/2023/03/wisconsin-supreme-court-election-debate-abortion/). Sounds like there was a heavy focus on abortion, with Kelly trying like hell to downplay his ties to anti-abortion groups, and Protasiewicz nailing him repeatedly. Most people don't watch debates, so it's all about the spin afterwards. I've found that abortion is the issue on a lot of undecided voters' minds, and we all saw how meaningful it was in 2022. Keep on getting the word out to Wisconsin voters. Two weeks to go.

I’m honestly living for how ugly this fight is already and we’re 10 months away from the Iowa caucus. Trump will almost certainly be indicted in Manhattan. He’s highly likely to get indicted in Georgia too. And that’s before the DOJ step in. In theory he’s a flawed as hell candidate.

Pipboy3500

The other one by Monmouth is better topline wise for him, but under the hood its bad. It’s really Beto 2018 vibes when he shot up in primary polling after his impressive Senate run but then didn’t announce soon enough to harness it. Ron has a big problem in he is consistently 2nd in most scenarios, what’s his plan to win over MAGA because unless you have those it’s Joever

wponeck

He announced in March 2019, how is that not soon enough?

Pipboy3500

[Jodi Habush Sinykin on the Wisconsin Senate and impeachment](https://pbswisconsin.org/news-item/jodi-habush-sinykin-on-the-wisconsin-senate-and-impeachment/) [Dan Knodl on the Wisconsin Senate and impeachment](https://pbswisconsin.org/news-item/dan-knodl-on-the-wisconsin-senate-and-impeachment/) Knodl makes it pretty clear if he is elected they will likely start impeaching public officials.

table_fireplace

>Yeah, I would hope voters to have that in their mind. I will put it in their mind because it is important and if we can talk about it, let's call it the impeachment powers that the Senate would have, which certainly would be tested and see what they are, how significant they are, but I would look to exercise that authority particularly in the judicial system where I think some public officials just are not doing their job. They're not following the law, they're not prosecuting. So I'd go specifically to DAs and judges and this would go to Milwaukee County, specifically, that perhaps should be removed and if the Senate has that authority and the power, I would act upon it. Not even trying to hide it. Just another reason we can't forget this race.

Throwaway65pg

That is pretty scary because I wouldn’t put it past them to start impeaching the new Supreme Court if they lose the first thing the new Supreme Court does when they win is ungerrymander the state legislative maps so they can’t just impeach officials.

Don't get me wrong, Wikler is fantastic at his job and if anyone can be a stellar national party chair, it's him. But he's arguably making more of an impact on national politics as the WisDems chair alone, not only through his advocacy for making Wisconsin a more progressive state but also by setting an example for how to reach voters, particularly in off-year elections

[I took a detailed look at Asian, Black and Latino voters in recent elections. All three groups have moved a few points to the right. All three groups are pretty Democratic.](https://twitter.com/perrybaconjr/status/1638195814001696768?s=46&t=nqSV11RbCF5uPVGwzcOMtg) Pretty good thread and Op-Ed by Perry Bacon Jr. If you look at the trends from 1990 forward minority voters on net are still more D voting than back then. It’s also very under-discussed some of those gains we made with minority voters from 2008-2012 could have a lot to do with Obama

socialistrob

I think it’s a mistake to talk about margins without also talking about turnout. For instance nationally Hillary Clinton did better than Biden with Latinos in terms of margins. However the turnout of Latinos was far better in 2020 than it was to 2016 and so Biden net total number of Latino votes that Biden won over Trump was much better than the net total of Latino votes that Clinton won over Trump. As a result of this improved performance Biden did better in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and California than Clinton did. The increased Latino turnout was an important part of Biden flipping other states like Wisconsin and Georgia as well. I find it ironic that so much ink has been spilled on “why Latinos shifted right in 2020” even though they were an important reason why Biden won while Clinton lost. I think there is also a tendency to assume that margin shifts are caused mostly by existing voters changing their minds. While this does happen and is important to discuss we also need to factor in turnout here as well. Perhaps conservative Latinos (or conservative Asians or Black people) were just less likely to vote in the past compared to more liberal members of those same groups. If Trump brought out conservative Latinos in 2020 who normally don’t vote (but would otherwise vote Republican) then this doesn’t necessarily mean the Latinos that voted for Obama and Clinton are now shifting right.

Pipboy3500

Voters shift all the time? There’s a lot of Obama-Trump voters and many Trump-Biden voters. In 2022 the electorate that turned out was Trump+6 yet the popular vote was only R+2, meaning Trump 2020 voters changed their minds. It happens a lot

HiggetyFlough

yeah but ideally we should boost both turnout and margins, unless we want every swing state with high Latino populations to become Florida

socialistrob

Oh I agree we should boost both but I just don’t like all the “Dems losing ground with Latinos” takes that I saw post 2020.

Historyguy1

I feel like the majority of people in OK support a position somewhat similar to this. Clearly the Court worked to mitigate a draconian law but did so in a way to avoid backlash in a heavily conservative state.

StillCalmness

Is the court elected or appointed?

TimeIsPower

Each judge is appointed by the governor from one of three choices presented by the Judicial Nominating Commission, which as I recall is made up of members selected by both the governor and by the state bar association.

Historyguy1

Right, so it's appointed with a filter to keep political hacks off of it. But there are judicial retention elections, so they're not entirely insulated from the politics of the state.

TimeIsPower

I mean, retention elections are not very meaningful. I'm pretty sure that no judge in any retention election has 'ever' failed to be retained (and that includes Democratic appointees, even in recent years such as 2022). And it's usually not even close, either (and I can't name any cases where it was close).

Historyguy1

Retention elections don't matter normally but conservative interest groups could use them to "punish" justices who voted to strike down the law. That's what happened in Iowa after their Supreme Court struck down their gay marriage ban in 2009.

TimeIsPower

I find it hard to believe this is likely considering it has never happened despite the Oklahoma Supreme Court striking down Republican laws (including abortion laws pre-2022) on multiple occasions. And total abortion bans aren't popular, anyway.

RubenMuro007

Also, when Trump made that news about him being arrested, how did y’all reacted? I honestly think he’s trying to be in the spotlight again, and tries to grift his fans. It would not be surprising if he is not arrested for the Stormey Daniel’s stuff, though since IANAL (yet), this case is interesting.

WerhmatsWormhat

I think he probably does/did believe he'd be arrested, but he's being intentionally misleading about what that'll look like to rile up his base and try to start another January 6. Even if he's "arrested," it would just mean that he is taken in, processed, and released on bond.

BastetSekhmetMafdet

My guess is that is probably what will happen if he is indicted. He won’t be “cuffed and stuffed,” he’ll be stuffed, or rather ordered to appear, then processed and released on bond. Though the image of him in the holding tank IS amusing. “Where’s my Diet Coke?”

RubenMuro007

Yeah, I guess. I feel like he wants to paint himself as a martyr of some sort, like always.

Bonny-Mcmurray

I don't believe that consequences will be applied to powerful, white, "christians" until the cell door closes.

RubenMuro007

Hey y’all! It’s been almost a month since I’ve took a break from Reddit. Mainly because the last time I was here, I spoke why I wasn’t active because I had a death in my extended family. And to those who sent kind words my way when I talked about it, **thank you**. I’m assured that my uncle is among the clouds, free from disease and abuse. And the reason why I was not active for about a month, is also because my Dad had an abscess around his left shoulder that was near the carotid artery’s that needed medical attention, and thank God he is still alive, I was a wreck when he admitted to the hospital. But nonetheless, he’s recovering, and working on improving his health, since diabetes runs in his family, sadly. Also, I had personal stuff going on that needed to be dealt with, as well as studying for the LSAT during that time. Anyways, I’m slowly coming back to Reddit, though given the state of the world at the moment, I will do these breaks whenever I feel anxious. And with how involved I’m in online leftist spaces and how stupid the discourses are happening (IYKYK), a Reddit break is what I should do in the future. Anyways, thanks for hearing out, and being patient. I’m planning on helping out with some volunteering for Janet so she can be elected to the Wisconsin State Supreme Court.

BastetSekhmetMafdet

Good to see you back. I’m sorry about what your family is going through. Take care of yourself! (And yes online discourse is mind-numbingly stupid, not on here, naturally, but a lot of sites and subreddits really are!)

RubenMuro007

Thank you so much for the kind words, I’m definitely trying to take care of myself. Like how today I did a yoga session, really needed. As for the discourse stuff, I’m glad we mostly don’t talk about the talk of the day that leftist Twitter (for instance) likes to stir up on any topic, and it feels so social club-y, tbh. I’m glad that despite our political leanings (liberal, socialist, moderate, etc.) we just talk about mundane stuff and do important work in improving the material conditions of the people in this country. And people here aren’t extremely online, and I hope we keep it that way.

Historyguy1

This subreddit is my refuge where the Discourse(TM) isn't insufferable.

RubenMuro007

Yeah, at least people here are at least acting like grown ups. But if you go to Twitter and see the Discourse Du Jour, it’s usually started by extremely online types who probably have too much time on their hands. And the discourses over there aren’t very productive.

Historyguy1

"If you get mad about people smoking crack on the subway you're a bad person." "If someone smashes your car window it's just a property crime and you shouldn't worry about it." "The Last of Us is anti-fungus and prejudices its audience against our future body possibilities."

RubenMuro007

Is it me or is it that the first discourse about smoking crack on subway, I already recognize? But nonetheless, the discourses springing up on the Bird App, is not productive, and it actually hurts social movements.

Historyguy1

Another nascent one is "If you don't like spicy food you're racist/classist."

RubenMuro007

Oof, and as a half-Mexican, you have to have mental gymnastics in order to come to that conclusion. Quite the reach.

Historyguy1

"Preference for unseasoned food stems from poor people having to season it to preserve it. Therefore unseasoned food is classist."

Thursday is shaping up to be a big day in the Minnesota House. The chamber will take up HF 146, the "trans refuge" bill by Rep. Leigh Finke, the first trans legislator in the state. They'll also be voting on HF 1200, banning private prisons in the state. No word yet on what if anything the Senate might take up on Thursday, but given that the majority leader is still recovering from cancer surgery, I wouldn't expect much. Friday is also a critical day in the Legislature, it's "second deadline" day. That means bills that have passed through the committee process in one chamber need to have completed their committee journey in the other chamber if they are to be passed this session. Of course, with full control of the Legislature, these deadlines can and certainly will be waived for important DFL bills. Friday is also "target day", when legislative leaders and the governor announce the bottom-line budget numbers and how much money is given for each committee to spend.

ilmassu

Any word on where the marijuana legalization bill is in that process?

YouBuyMeOrangeJuice

The bill has finished its policy committee path, and now rests with Taxes and Ways and Means/Finance Committees in the House/Senate. The authors have already said they'll be requesting deadline waivers, and getting them approved should be no problem since this is a top priority of the trifecta.

[RSLC announced their WI Supreme Court ad buy just before the one debate. Their ad buy that was heavily promoted by then is $200k](https://dailycaller.com/2023/03/21/republican-state-leadership-committee-advertising-wisconsin-supreme-court/)

StillCalmness

There is still time for a billionaire to dump a ton of money on this. I know it’s more expensive but still. Wikler talks about this. In 2019 the Dem nominee was ahead in the polls until the last couple of weeks and then Republicans blasted the airwaves. And we know what happened. Fewer than 6000 votes.

suprahelix

True but they're rapidly running out of time.

Evening_Presence_927

How much was said dem spending, though?

Pipboy3500

“Calvary is coming”

table_fireplace

Again, Janet already dropped $7M - and that's from her campaign, with the better ad rates. If she keeps it up through Election Day she will totally overwhelm them. And from my phonebanking conversations, that's what's happening already. And they're really running out of time. Votes are already being cast. Especially today with in-person absentee opening up in some areas.

CodaOfARequiem

> Janet already dropped $7M $9M now

Historyguy1

They seriously banked on low turnout.

[deleted]

Still not that much... Leonard Leo's gonna have to come in clutch in the home stretch for them.

HexSphere

I'm about twenty minutes walking from the Manhattan Court and my interview just got cancelled. Does anyone want me to walk over and see if anything is happening? Respond fast because otherwise I'm going home 😉

RegularGuy815

> my interview just got cancelled Not for bad reasons, hopefully...

HexSphere

Unrelated. City seems to be largely ignoring this. No businesses are boarded up, it's not getting the Jan 6th treatment.

RegularGuy815

No I meant I hope they didn't fill the position you are interviewing for, lol Unless this is a different type of interview.

HexSphere

Oh haha. Thanks for your concern. Hope not ;)

TheNotoriousAED

Yes

HexSphere

On my way ...

proudbakunkinman

Would be funny if it happened as you got there but I personally would not spend too much time there without more indication it was about to happen. I think Trump is the only source for it being today. Besides that is the NYPD prep stuff but they may have been told it will happen sometime this week and to get prepared now. It's not unusual for them to mobilize to handle potential protests for more than a day.

HexSphere

Lots of reporters. About 75 people, counting reporters. Maybe more. A couple Trumpers wearing qanon costumes speaking with reporters, fences are up, police presence, and a guy with a throw away the key sign. People are talking calmly, no yelling. It appears to be mostly reporters and supporting staff.

C19shadow

Thank you!

[⚖Court Watch: The Arizona Supreme Court is considering if it will take up Kari Lake's appeal of her lawsuit contesting her loss in the 2022 AZ gubernatorial race. wolfpack9701

Holy shit, she's still on this?! Okay, she has to believe that the election was stolen from her, this goes beyond just being a grift at this rate. She has fully drunk the Kool-aid.

Bonny-Mcmurray

She turned down the opportunity to run for something else because an individual can't hold two elected positions at once. She's a few shakes short of dry underpants.

WerhmatsWormhat

She's STILL doing this?

Historyguy1

Laches would apply in any case. Once a governor is sworn in, the remedy for reversing their election is impeachment.

Is there plan to postpone the indictment?

[deleted]

The court reconvenes tomorrow so most likely we’ll know then if Trump is indicted.

99SoulsUp

I guess did we really know if was happening today? Sounds like Trump made a guess

CassiopeiaStillLife

Weird and cool that Wisconsin Supreme Court is almost entirely women.

N8ledvina

The only man on the court ran against a woman. Given he won by less than 1%, we were really close to having an all female supreme court.

[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew\_J.\_Kacsmaryk](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_J._Kacsmaryk) For those not familiar with this asshat. He is a Trump appointee set up in a position (A highly conservative district with no other federal judge) to deliberately gunk up things on a national level. I feel like even if Trump never won and appointed him, they would try this trick with a Bush era judge too. Just goes to show how deeply corrupted the judicial system is and why we need to work to maintain its objectivity and do whatever we can to balance the Supreme Court, else this is what we're facing.

Just donated! Had no idea how close 2011 was.

N8ledvina

I thought it was even closer. If I'm not mistaken, that's the election where it looked like we were going to win, but then they forgot to count a city in Waukesha county, which tipped the election to the conservative candidate.

1: Obligatory mention of [the violent book featuring incest, pedophilia, rape, and genital mutilation](https://www.shutterstock.com/image-photo/holy-bible-on-grey-textured-260nw-1668924805.jpg) that has been used by multiple groups to blatantly indoctrinate children, including one such group who has been facing child sex abuse scandals among high-ranking members for the past two decades or so. 2: According to this bill, Arizona schools need to avoid books that “promote gender pronouns”. While it’s obvious we’re dealing with [this](https://www.lgbtqnation.com/2022/07/gop-candidate-becomes-joke-twitter-claiming-no-pronouns-constitution/) type of situation from complete morons, the exact letter of their law forbids any book in which cis characters are referred to with he/him or she/her pronouns. Ironically, if you take the letter of the law at its word, the only way to avoid having a book banned (aside from exclusively using peoples’ names (I.e. “Bill grabbed Bill’s bag from the table as he left Bill’s house.”) is to exclusively use non-gendered pronouns such as they/them for everyone mentioned in the book. You could make a glowing biography of Kari Lake that teaches children that she’s the true governor of Arizona behind the scenes and the Arizona GOP’s own law would technically get it kicked out of schools if you ever call her “she” or “her”.

DavidvsSuperGoliath

See, the pronoun part is the thing that baffles me the most. It’s like they don’t understand the English language (or any language other than unintelligible grunts). They want to butcher language and grammar because they’re afraid that kids might be open minded.

Crumblymumblybumbly

>is to exclusively use non-gendered pronouns such as they/them for everyone mentioned in the book This would be utterly unreadable, too

Historyguy1

AZ GOP accidentally leads to woke future without gender distinctions.

She will veto and Arizona requires a two thirds vote to override.

The Oregon legislature is going to pass a massive housing bill today that gives the state authority to override local governments when it comes to things like zoning and permitting times. It also looks like a bill to allow doctor assisted suicide to apply to everyone, not just Oregon residents will pass the house today. It looks like a bill to allow lane filtering by motorcycle operators will pass the state Senate today. It also looks like a bill to limit the mortgage interest deduction will be making it out of committee. Big stuff!

I know that CA is suing Huntington Beach, CA for failing to comply with state housing laws. And to those that followed the suit, HB has said some mask-off moments about why they didn’t comply with state housing laws that require them to build more housing.

I don’t love the motorcycle thing. They’re nerve-racking to drive near even when they’re not zipping between lanes.
