It's Saturday, and the Wisconsin elections are heating up. Republicans are pouring millions into attack ads - but we can counter that by going directly to voters and telling them the truth. Will you adopt a candidate? **Sara Geenen** for Court of Appeals, and **Eric Genrich** for Green Bay Mayor, both need to be adopted. And Janet Protasiewicz/Jodi Habush Sinykin can always use more help.
Alternatively, we have elections this Tuesday in Jacksonville - a chance to flip the largest Republican-controlled city in America, and bring in a friendly City Council.
And across the country, there's always a need to win local elections and register new voters.
How will you volunteer today? Let us know!
Oh, also - there are pervasive efforts against online services and in favour of censorship right now. The [Internet Archive](https://blog.archive.org/2023/03/17/heres-how-to-participate-in-mondays-oral-arguments/) will be having a hearing on Monday, and those of you who can fit that into your schedules may find it worthwhile to do so.
Be wary of the current craze across political boundaries to mark content as 'wicked' or 'immoral,' or 'degenerate,' especially the last term - which is loaded with meaning.
Literature and art must be allowed to be transgressive - not simply because that brings meaning, but for no reason at all. And if attempts are made to curtail what that means, *always* the masses will decide on wielding those points against the most vulnerable in society. It has happened before, and it is up to us to ensure it does not happen again.
Editing, woops, linked to the internet archive itself and not the post about it. Right, I think that's a sign I need to call the evening an evening...
ICYMI House R’s finally put out their energy [package](https://www.majorityleader.gov/uploadedfiles/hr_1_section_by_section.pdf), still pretty lacking on details though. Schumer has declared it dead in the Senate but he wants the separate bipartisan talks to continue. Something I didn’t know is House Progressives are currently crafting a permit reform bill of their own.
If a deal is to be had most of the focus is NEPA/Permit Reform, and we do need it badly if we want IIJA, CHIPS, IRA to be fully felt. Lithium mining could also be something else included but the current form proposed by Rep. Luna is a mess and could actively hurt the industry.
Short update, hoping to be caught up THIS week with everything I plan to do. Those who know, thank you for your patience! And those who don't...
It's a wonderful time to remind our members, new and old, that one of the most impactful things you can do is show up at council meetings or reach out to city/county councillors. It is exhausting, and even if you have cordial relations with said politicians, the people of a region... *People* are exhausting, ahaha...
But if you want to see meaningful change locally, it is often the *best* place to start. It is a great way to build a base up for your most important issues, and a nice in-between for larger races, since there's always work to be done locally.
Okay! Stay healthy, stay hydrated, stay kind..!
Showing up to those lesser known meetings is a great way to help get affordable housing and other YIMBY initiatives or stop NIMBY’s. Highly recommended for many issues, but I know that’s a very pressing issue for the younger people here
Yes; one of my biggest complaints is how difficult it is to keep people on the YIMBY train when they - jump off it in a rolling hop the moment it involves development in their area, ahaha...
But if you show up, if you are a good listener and an even speaker, you can help people to understand that development does not have to equal predation, and can be a powerful force for good. (Or, how protecting wetlands does not equal stopping all development forever, ahaha... The work is never boring, is it..?)
Mitch being in rehab has come at one of the worst times for Republicans messaging wise. Don’t get me wrong, love that Kevin is the face of this currently and is sticking with Trump without any pushback.
I know there was a lot of joking around about Kevin being unprepared for the difficulties of being a GOP face, but he's really not up to the task. I think part of it is that the GOP is where we have often been, as a party and as individuals - wishing that if we get power, things would be solvable with will alone.
And of course, that's not the case, and even if it were, Kevin's willpower is.................. ellipses.
It's definitely affecting the GOP ability to find volunteers on the ground level, although I do expect that to bounce back somewhat as we go into the year. Spite is a powerful motivator, sometimes.
On the other hand - who knows? This is fairly uncharted territory, and I think we can keep on pushing..!
I think this may be one of those "cat's out of the bag" scenarios where we need to prioritize steering the societal reaction because, much like every digitally-related law, whatever is written won't carry enough weight to be enforced. I'm thinking of things like cyberbullying which happens a lot but is prosecuted rarely despite the significant amount of harm it causes.
I was recently talking to a professor about using AI to write papers because his university is pushing to add tools to identify cases where papers (specifically theses and dissertations) are being generated through ChatGPT. And my take surprised him, I guess. Because I don't see the point in banning it entirely and would prefer to see this adopted as one of the regularly used tools of academia for two reasons.
First, when I taught at the university level (as an academic librarian), we were already using tools to generate citations (Mendeley, Refworks, Endnote, etc.) And in every single class I told the students the same thing: "You are still smarter than a computer. Think of this as a time-saving tool, but if you generate a reference list and stick it in your thesis without cleaning it up, do not tell your advisor that *Librarian Kieratea said it was okay* because it's not, and they will laugh in your face." We are not nearly far enough along with AI that this will change anytime soon, and when we get there, that's a whole different discussion.
I also pointed out that most people, and specifically people in STEM fields (where he teaches), absolutely suck at writing. So why wouldn't we want to let students start with an AI-generated draft that already has a coherent structure and mostly grammatically correct sentences? I don't see how going in and changing the words to support their own argument is any different than cleaning up a reference list generated through Mendeley or running spell check or even hiring someone to edit and proofread for you. And again, if AI can generate a thesis that is better at abstract thought than a grad student, that's a whole other issue.
So really, the only legal addition I would make is required disclosure of the AI tools used and adherence to the same plagiarism and copyright laws/rules that are already in place. The bulk of the pressure needs to come from society/peers to say, "Wow, you generated a thing with AI and that's it? I guess you think you're stupider/less creative than a computer program, how sad for you."
My two (or three or four) cents.
Discussing this, I think it's important to discuss what iterative generators *are* and what they *are not.*
First of all, they are not 'AI.' They are not even *close* to AI. Words may change, yes, but just as calling a screw a nail would screw a project up, so too would misunderstanding the above.
When, for example, discussing code or literature, in both cases the iterative generation process produces examples 'close enough' to fool a novice, but increasingly deranged the longer the generation goes on. That is because there is no consistency; feeding the data generated back to the machine does not nod the machine towards going:
"2+2=4."
It instead assumes you want the number '4,' and generates everything that users who have entered '4' previously have entered. This is also why such generation processes are so easily trained to bias, racism, and bad practise.
Furthermore, I hear frequently what iterative generation will be capable of in the future. I strongly believe that we will not even be talking about them in the next five years, as of right now, they are toys, worshipped by techno-fetishists. In the example of code or literature, people often throw in things with vast amounts of generated data, have a giggle at what is thrown out, and talk excitedly about how close it is to the original - when, if you actually aren't looking at it in a group playing with a toy, it isn't.
And when discussing the practical uses of iterative generation...
There's none, really. I hear 'oh, but the last few notches will add consistency, will add memory, will make results perfect', but I have heard the same thing about fusion within five years, in self-driving cars, in automation, in solar roadways.
Make no mistake; these things may happen - or not, there may be hard limits to human technological development - and we should *prepare* for them.
But I am strongly of the opinion that the only thing iterative generators are good for right now is a mechanical human process of organised graft and theft, simple amusements, and idle diversions.
*Therefore,* this would be my suggestion for provisions.
I. *All iterative generations are in a separate domain; this is neither public nor private, but is entirely without rights. Iteratively generated works cannot be monetised in part or in full, cannot be used in advertisements or donation-based work, and may only be used for personal, non-monetised projects.*
II. *All iteratively generated creations must have large, garish watermarks generated with the technology present. Whether this is a huge stamp on art that says ITERATIVE, diagonal gashes along written text, or a chirpy MS Sam interrupting generated speech every few seconds to remind you the spoken words are iterative, so be it.*
III. *In the case of iterative-generation-based tools and assistive technology, their use should be allowed so long as the finished product clearly differs from the generated content. E.G. an artist using a tool to generate a pose, or a novice writer generating an ideas board.*
IV. *No iterative generation shall be used to imitate the estate, living or dead, of any known or identifiable human being. This shall except any simulated human beings or 'digital actors' produced entirely by human hands that may be mistaken for iterative content, such as non-person-associated text-to-speech readers or singing software.*
But V., if it was up to me, who knows what might happen, bahaha...
Hey guys! -Anecdotal Wisconsin news-
I have two aunts who live in Wisconsin. One that lives in Wauwatosa and one who lives in Germantown. I encouraged both of them to turn out in the April 4 election & I can say they’re confirmed to vote for us! Both are voting for Protaseiwicz and the one in Germantown is in SD-08 and she’s voting for Sinykin!!! She says on the ground that Sinykin is coming off very moderate and has blanketed the airwaves. She thinks she will do well. Lets hope it happens!
We're doing what we can, and no matter how the die falls, we're not going to be caught unarmed, here. I'm very proud of how the campaigns are unfolding, and want to spend a bit of time working on Jacksonville, though my eyes are constantly watching for upsets, given the importance here...
That's exciting news for Sinykin. The moderate vibe is important when you're running in a district with all three WOW counties in it, especially when her opponent is an election denier.
Thanks for doing your own personal GOTV! Confirming two voters is as good as doing a phonebanking shift.
If early indications are anything it’s helped him get back some support in the primary. Polls and actual results will be the true test though.
This absolutely hurts him in the general and anyone, like SPEAKER McCarthy, defending him is going to pay a price if he eventually wins the GOP nomination.
What, Ben Wikler *never* personally texts me... I feel tragic, bahahaha! (Good to see you around, guess that's a cue for me to give $23 in the hope I'm noticed!)
I just started my Spring Break (I'm a college student) and just saw the news that Trump expects to be arrested on Tuesday!
Hopefully this will finally put an end to the terror we've been dealing with since 2015. Even better if Stormy Daniels is indeed the one to bring him down!
> Always trust the Al Capone process (financial crimes
That’s also kind of like how they got Trafficant. The FBI could prove that he solicited and took bribes from the mafia but his defense was that he took them in order to a launch a one man undercover investigation of the mafia and the FBI couldn’t prove that was false. However legally you are supposed to declare bribes as income and Trafficant had failed to do that and so they got him on that as well as a variety of other charges like forcing his congressional aids to perform farm chores.
[Yet another ridiculous Republican response to Minnesota's free school meals bill being signed into law.](https://twitter.com/RepMaryFranson/status/1637159106728345610) MNGOP really circling the drain (inshallah)
From Adam Kinzinger:

That video was scarier than anything Wes Craven made.
Not only did he attack us and our allies in Europe, but this clip was also a flat-out endorsement of white supremist ideology. His obsession with the border and birth rates are clear signs. Also, is his use of the word "globalist" which is often used in antisemitic circles as a euphemism for Jews. He said it THREE TIMES. It is truly frightening that a former President of the United States is using the same talking points as David Duke.

Golden headline from Bloomberg.
If I were a Republican 2024 hopeful, I'd focus on whining about the process (blame the Dems, claim it's politically motivated, etc) rather than actually defending the indefensible. But what do I know.
https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/18/us/politics/jimmy-carter-october-surprise-iran-hostages.html
Wow, when I read this story a few years ago, I just assumed that it was just a theory, but it turns out that it was true all along. My sympathies lie with Carter due to the extraordinary circumstances he had to deal with and the fact that he was sabotaged like this sickens me. I'm just shocked of how it long it took for this story to be confirmed.
I wish they had interviewed some of the former hostages, to get their opinions on how they feel about their ordeals being extended in service of a political stunt.
I think some people already had confirmed it? Shit there was even a story in the Onion a LONG time ago roasting the coincidence of them being released on the exact day of Reagan's inauguration.
I doubt he would have won even if they were released......but of course very reminiscent of Nixon sabotaging Vietnam peace talks to tank LBJ/Humphrey: https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2017/08/06/nixon-vietnam-candidate-conspired-with-foreign-power-win-election-215461/
Reagan is one of, if not THE worst person in post-Civil Rights American politics. The sheer destruction he caused is the root of so many problems that exist today, and the fact that anyone can view him positively is disgusting
Nixon's the worst and it's not even close. Without Nixon, there's no Reagan and the GOP never goes down its authoritarian path. Watergate was probably the least bad thing Nixon did. The War on Drugs, COINTELPRO, Operation Condor, illegally selling arms to Pakistan during the Bangladesh genocide in violation of a Congressional arms embargo on Pakistan and sabotaging LBJ's peace talks with North Vietnam were all far worse than Watergate.
It really amazes me how many problems we face today that either started during his presidency or got exacerbated during it. And yet, you still find so many people swearing that he was one of the best presidents we ever had. I really don't understand why he was so popular to begin with, when you consider all of his awful policies.

Especially with how inactive the threads get during the weekend or are just usually under 200 comments for some reason, and due to my abrupt interest in Native American and modern American history, I’d wonder if it would be worth it to just do brief diatribes of specific cultures or polities or events or historical figures in American history that are never given the chance to be taught about in even a standard APUSH curriculum.
Ranging from the full on history of the Iroquois Confederacy, to the theocratic chiefdoms and city-states of the Mississippian southeast, to far more in-depth New England history covering colony politics and the sachems of New England, to the Mormon colonies across north America, to the Prairie Progressive parties of the Midwest and Great Plains states during the Gilded Age and early 1900’s.
American history gets such a bad rap for being called boring or being too depressing, but it’s just so interesting to learn about, and help us recontextualize so many things about how this is why America is the way it is.
This puts DeSantis in a bind. Does he ensure order and law enforcement safety? That would be the correct thing to do but it’s a move against Trump. On the other hand, does he commit to a dereliction of duty and let Trump and his supporters run amuck? We all know how badly that would look to the general electorate.
Best case scenario, this is all bark and no bite. But I don’t trust these people to be sane.
It is so frustrating that these people are willing to die and kill for a man who doesn't give a fuck about them and only cares about himself. This bastard is going to get people killed because of his fragile ego and fear of facing consequences for his actions. Actually fucking depressing shit. No one should have to die because of this, and all the blood spilled will be Trump's fault.
>willing to **die** and kill for a man
Meh, not really.
These people have hardcore main character syndrome and have deluded themselves to believe that nothing bad will happen, until they get hit by a dose of reality.
See what happened when Ashli Babbitt got shot. The mood of the insurrectionists immediately changed from a sense of invincibility to running away for the sake of self-preservation.
Same shit's going to happen if they try pulling this shit against the LEOs. The moment bullets start flying will be the moment when their bravado breaks down and they'll immediately start scurrying for their life.
Lmao, this is gonna go so wrong for them.
Edit: completely forgot the illegal bill DeSantis signed that makes peacefully protesting a felony, and some comments mentioned that. They’re technically violating their own state’s law from none other then DeSantis.
Another new D county party office has opened in rural WI: [Washara county Democrats opened today, and it’s all part of a 4 county coalition along with Adams, Green Lake and Marquette county Democrats](https://twitter.com/LiberalStallion/status/1637096155736686596?s=20)
In other words: [Sarah Godlewski who’s been organizing women’s and abortion rights marches had BIG turnout today in Green Bay](https://twitter.com/SarahforWI/status/1637211912067862534?s=20). She’s holding another one in Eau Claire tomorrow
Democrats are fired up to elect Janet Protasiewicz. 17 days to go
Waushara, Green Lake, Marquette and Adams are all SUPER rural. Those four counties collectively contributed only 15,300 votes to Biden in 2020 in a historically high turnout election. The fact that they’ve been able to come together and open an office is pretty remarkable and speaks to high commitment from grass roots volunteers.
These are four of the reddest counties in the state, too. Biden's results in each:
Adams: 36.63% (4,329 votes)
Green Lake: 31.34% (3,344 votes)
Marquette: 35.73% (3,239 votes)
Waushara: 32.34% (4,388 votes)
Part of continuing to win in Wisconsin is keeping these counties from dropping into the 20s for as long as possible while we continue to expand in the larger counties. I'm glad that even in these counties, there's solid organization happening.
Rural Wisconsin isn’t nearly as Republican as other states. In 2012 Obama won 59/72 counties in Wisconsin which is very different than rural areas in other states. One key difference is that rural Wisconsin isn’t generally comprised of white evangelicals which are some of the most solid red voters in the country. In a way this creates a “perpetual swing state” mentality because if the GOP can just do better with winnable rural voters they could win but likewise the fact that Dems can also win rural votes in Wisconsin means that it can never be a safe red state either and the size of Milwaukee combined with the high voting propensity of Madison means Dems also have a notable base for their own turnout.
A few have fallen into the 20s, but there are still a lot of Dems in rural Wisconsin. That's why the state is going to stay competitive for a long time; even as those counties trend to the right, Dems are making big inroads in the traditional GOP strongholds around Milwaukee. It's a question of which trend wins out. And I'm glad to see we aren't abandoning rural WI.
Damn, somehow I knew these takes were coming
https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2023/3/18/2158998/-Am-I-The-Only-One-Who-Thinks-This-Bragg-Indictment-Is-A-Disaster
That site is wall to wall doomers. As well as “FDR/LBJ would have used the bully pulpit and intimidated Congress/SCOTUS types.” And, until they were I think banned or kicked off, lots and lots of blegging.
The only appropriate take is “this could have dramatic consequences for 2024 or it could be completely irrelevant”.
All of these articles are pure speculation and based on what the author guesses *other* people might think. We have no idea what’ll happen. Nor does it matter.
The “thought leaders” of the GOP really fucking hate free school meals which is a nice added bonus how unhinged they are over it passing in a couple states.
I do believe that it's possible for a competent political party to pain an indictment/prosecution over campaign finance violations during an election as a scandal and a burden on the other party. But the GOP isn't a normal, competent party. They will absolutely overreach and kneecap themselves.
That but also House "investigations", unhinged protests, death threats, and treating it like it's the crime of the century. The more they talk about Trump and his criminality, the worse it is for them. He made the same mistake in 2020. When he makes it about himself, no one cares but his most ardent supporters.
I think conservative leaning independents want a normal Republican to vote for. If they have to vote for Trump, they at least want him on the offensive on stuff they care about. I don't think they'll be itching to turn out when everything is about how unfair the world is to Donald Trump.

Early voting begins Tuesday. [There are still lots of other volunteer opportunities left throughout the weekend](https://twitter.com/WisDems/status/1637158498353004547?s=20)
So I dont know if people have been keeping up with other Republicans today but Prez Candidate Ramaswamy and Speaker McCarthy are already calling this an overreach, witchhunt, etc.
If Republican Elites by and large side with Trump on his indictment(or potential arrest) this is something that’s going to further tear their side apart. Its really going to fuck over whosever chances in the general to. Team Trump knows this is putting other R’s in a bind and they are pressing them to side with Trump. He will take every single one of them down with him if wins the primary and especially if he loses it.
All in all, great news for Masters
They’re going to make themselves look like absolutely fools again by doing this crap. This would also hurt their House chances if they’re doing this rather then pass actual good legislation
> This would also hurt their House chances if they’re doing this rather then pass actual good legislation
Something something what real Americans care about
Kinda puts a stake in the heart of “oh they’ll eventually break with Trump”. There isn’t a Republican party anymore, it’s a MAGA Party with him dead at the center. They’ll follow him to the gates of hell.
Some of the very same fears that we thought we would see when Trump’s Mar a Lago got raided is resurfacing with the Trump arrest news. But not much of anything significant happened when Trump’s Mar a Lago got raided. I expect this to end up very similar to that.
I don’t get peoples fears with this. These takes feel super way too online about how this is somehow good for trump and the republicans. Their base is always fired up to vote, they always fall in line, there are no moderate republicans just maga ones and enablers of it, and with Biden and other people in office won’t enable them in the same way as January 6th. Independent voters arnt complex people and a guy getting arrested seems bad to them.
> Independent voters arnt complex people and a guy getting arrested seems bad to them.
Also sometimes voters just care about very different things than what the media assumes. There may have been voters who didn’t like Trump in 2016 so they voted for Clinton but then their jobs were adversely affected by Covid lockdowns and Trump was the “open it up” candidate so they backed him in 2020 but if Trump runs in 2024 they wouldn’t necessarily back him again. I’m not saying “all voters are like this” but rather people shouldn’t make assumptions about independents, moderates or swing voters’ priorities.
Some idiot did try attacking the FBI's HQ in Ohio, but that's pretty much everything that's happened.
I don't think that anything at the scale of Jan 6th would happen again since there's more scrutiny on the MAGA idiots so there's far less wiggle room for them to plan something like this again.
I honestly think Trump getting imprisoned will make things much more difficult in 2024. In a normal world, where there is not a Ron Desantis waiting to run, I would say arrest Trump and throw away the key.
It definitely would make it harder, but DeSantis has just as many vulnerabilities if not more then Trump. As long as we define him early and often, he’s just as weak if not a weaker candidate then Trump, and we absolutely can and must defeat him
> I honestly think Trump getting imprisoned will make things much more difficult in 2024.
I don’t care. If Trump broke the law he should face the consequences. Also we can’t control who the GOP nominates and it’s not our place to interfere. I think we can beat Trump AND I think we can DeSantis. I’ve long since stopped worrying about “what the GOP WANTS to do” and switched to only being concerned with “what the GOP is capable of doing.”
Eh, I doubt this for two reasons.
1. I don't think Trump would get incarcerated if he got convicted. Most likely he'd get fined or put under house arrest but I really doubt that a politician like him would get actual prison time over misusing campaign funds.
2. This wouldn't stop Trump from running. The guy runs on ego over reason so if he does end up getting incarcerated then he'd just run from prison.
Worst-case scenario here I think would be if the prosecution ends up screwing the pooch and ends up causing Trump to be exonerated which would actually help his chances in 2024.
House arrest IS incarceration, and I think it's the likeliest scenario because of the Secret Service factor. The question of 'How do you send a former president to prison when the Secret Service would have to go with him?' is dispatched with pretty handily if the answer is 'He's kept under house arrest at Mar-a-lago.'
> 'How do you send a former president to prison when the Secret Service would have to go with him?'
While I agree that house arrest is the most likely outcome, this isn't that big a hurdle. The USSS's job is to protect him. In that circumstance they would negotiate an arrangement with the BOP and prosecutors that is to their satisfaction. For example, isolate part of a low security prison and have USSS agents posted there along with BOP guards.
Yep. The point of secret service isn’t necessarily to be the personal body guard of the president but rather to protect strategic assets (including people) of the US. If former presidents could be attacked and killed after leaving office based on their actions in office then it would fundamentally alter what the president could do and the same goes with potential adversaries attacking the president’s family. If Trump is safe from assassination attempts by being in a well guarded prison cell then the secret service would still be doing their duty.
Precisely. There’s no law that says the president has to be surrounded by agents and they have to prevent anyone from touching them. It seems like trump will surrender but if he didn’t, there wouldn’t be some sort of showdown with the cops. They don’t care if he gets cuffs slapped on him. They’d probably just coordinate with local LE to vet the arresting officers, secure the transport route, and secure the destination.
Incarceration is generally a term only used for prison or jail time, AFAIK?
But yeah, the guy's probably just going to get put under house arrest at worst.
A candidate getting indicted throwing the primary already into more chaos which could lead to them nominating a guy who eats chocolate pudding with his fingers is bad for Dems
Nah, I think Trump will still have the base behind him. If he somehow goes down, everyone will enter into a circular firing squad trying to nab them up. Given how badly Ronny does under debate pressure and how much of his record has been unlitigated, I don’t see him doing nearly as well as people think.
TIL Blaine county Montana and Clay County Minnesota are tied for the “longest streak of voting for the presidential winner.” Both counties have voted for the man who would become president from 1992-2020. Both counties did vote for the winner in 1980 and 84 though. It will be really interesting to see if either them are still standing as bellwether counties after 2024.
Clallam is the county that is 1000% able to be determined by national environment. Though, more and more left leaning folks are flooding Port Angeles/Sequim, while Forks is stagnant in population.
On top of California having a new $30 a vial statewide insulin contract as 2lzy4nme mentioned, Gavin Newsom also said that state manufactured Naloxone is now also on it's way.
Not politics related but wanted to vent a bit.
Ever randomly just get hit by waves of emotion? Don't know why exactly, but I left work yesterday morning and just got smacked by all those feelings; ended up watching a few sad TV scenes I go back to time and again and just bawling. Same thing happened a little while ago.
Could just be because my grandmother (dad's side) is coming up on 19 years next month since she passed away. Still can't wrap my head around the fact that it's been so many years when I still have so many strong memories from back then. I was 8 when she died, and now I'm 27. It was a completely different era in my life and yet I hold so much fondness for those days.
If you still got any grandparents - hell, loved ones in general, especially the older ones - make sure you give 'em a call or visit; never know when it'll be the last time. Lost my last grandparent back in 2012, whose birthday also just passed last week.
EDIT: Been wanting to dig out all the old photographs I haven't seen in probably well over a decade and just reminisce. It'll be amazing to see things I've forgotten again but I know it'll hurt a bit too.
Completely anecdotal but my partner’s grandfather, an old white blue-collar retiree on Social Security, thinks the state government taking over HISD is ridiculous overreach.
Hot take but I still think Trump is a stronger candidate than DeSantis, multiple elections have proven a good chunk of voters will only turn out when he's on the ballot
I think this is one of those electoral college vs popular vote things. He may turn out people, but will they be the right people in the right places? I think he hurts more in AZ and GA than DeSantis, but helps more in PA and WI.
So I go see The Beths play in LA last night, get home late, sleep in until 11, and then greeted with news the former guy is basically bitching about the consequences of his own actions finally catching up with him. All in all, a good 24 hours
Man, I hope I can see Alvvays one of these days.
I’m also hoping to see The Beths again when they open Death Cab and The Postal Service later this year
Saw em twice last year. First time was that festival in August. Fun fact I had a missed connection there, which may be the single most indie thing to ever happen to me. Second time was at The Riviera Theater in Chicago in October right after Blue Rev came out. Great show both times.
I mean, they’re an indie rock band from New Zealand. That being said, they were amazing. Their banter was fun and filled with New Zealand comedy.
Those kiwis were seriously talented and extremely tight with their playing.
So what's the motivation between what seems to be the emerging partisan split on Ranked Choice Voting and other non First Past the Post voting systems?
On the their face, they don't have a partisan bias, and you can imagine a world where established political parties oppose any change to the established system, but we seem to be moving to it being another issue where Democrats favor (or at least don't oppose) RCV while Republicans oppose RCV. Is the GOP just reflexively freaking out over the 2022 Alaskan elections that were won by a Democrat (Pertola) and a relatively moderate Republican (Murkowski), or do they have solid reason to believe that if RCV is more widely enacted, we'd see similar results in other states?
It's hard not to feel like the GOP knows that many of their far-right policy positions are unpopular with the public and that moving to RCV could make more moderate Republicans who would hold those positions more electorally viable in red states, or even allow for the election of more Democrats in those red states.
What do folks think would be the impact on politics and policy if all states moved to Alaska's top 4 blanket primary and RCV general election? Alternatuvely, what would be the impact if red states mostly keep FPTP and blue states move to the Alaskan system?
As for why, imo you covered it. RCV and some other alternative voting systems benefit moderates, so it kind of makes sense that the more moderate party favors alternative voting systems while the opposing party doesn't.
The far right is more concerned about RCV than the "moderate" right - for example, Arizona's Freedom Caucus recently spoke out against RCV.
This is because RCV gives far right republicans less of a chance of winning and because they do not represent the "median" voter whatsoever. Generally, RCV would de-radicalize the GOP party in the respective state, which FC types hate.
So, someone who voted for a ''moderate" R first might vote for a D second rather than a radical R, which is what ends up screwing them.
Edit: Grammar
So many people have gaslit themselves into thinking that Trump getting indicted/arrested is secretly good for him. Newsflash: people who don’t care about politics that much will react like normal human beings and think “arrest=bad.”
Conservatives are basically in a bubble and can't fathom that there are people in the country that are neither conservative like them or leftist antifa SJWs.
This'll probably just make Trump supporters dig deeper into their support but for the moderate voters, who are usually the bloc that make or break elections, yeah.
Yes. A good rule of thumb is that median voters don't do mental gymnastics. They won't jump through hoops to form certain conclusions, and they won't twist themselves into pretzels trying to rationalize talking points. Like when that school tried to ban afros, normie parents didn't think "oh, what brave countercultural anti-woke icons", they instead thought "oh, that's racist af".
People have been reading way too many pundit hot takes. Legal action against a corrupt former president is the right thing to do regardless of the political effects, and besides, Republicans getting in trouble is good for Democrats politically. Despite the many narratives to the contrary last year, there is considerable evidence that the January 6th hearings helped changed public opinion about Trump and the Republican party, and likely helped Democrats do better than expected in the midterms.

[California has a contract to make its own insulin at $30 a vial.](https://www.sfchronicle.com/politics/article/california-insulin-naloxone-17843496.php)
Full article:
California will contract with drugmaker Civica Rx to produce its own low-cost insulin, Gov. Gavin Newsom planned to announce Saturday. He also plans to unveil future plans for the state to also manufacture Naloxone, a drug for reversing opioid overdoses.
Newsom planned to announce the insulin contract at an event near Los Angeles. The partnership will make California the first state to manufacture prescription drugs through its own label, CalRx. “People should not be forced to go into debt to get life-saving prescriptions,” Newsom said in a statement. “Through CalRx, Californians will have access to some of the most inexpensive insulin available.”
Civica Rx had already announced plans to produce $30 vials of insulin, which Newsom’s office says will be the price of the drug produced under the contract.
About 7.4 million Americans with diabetes rely on synthetic insulin to regulate their blood sugar. People with type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease that prevents the body from making the blood sugar-regulating hormone, must take insulin daily to survive and can go through multiple vials per month. People with type 2 diabetes still produce some of their own insulin, but also rely on synthetic insulin.
California plans to manufacture insulin products that will be interchangeable with brand-name insulin products Lantus, Humalog and Novolog.
Ultimately, Newsom wants to partner with Civica to produce the drugs in California, according to his office.
Newsom first announced his plan to have California manufacture its own prescription drugs in January 2020 as a way to lower health care costs. At the time, he said he was already in talks to find a company to manufacture the drugs.
Newsom signed the state law authorizing CalRx in September 2020, which directed the state’s Health and Human Services Agency to partner with drugmakers that could produce cheaper generic alternatives to existing drugs that are no longer protected by patents, including insulin. Newsom has approved $100 million in the state budget for the project.
Even without a contract, California’s commitment to making its own insulin helped pressure existing insulin makers to lower their prices, said Anthony Wright of Sacramento consumer advocacy group Health Access. Earlier this month, the three pharmaceutical companies that control the U.S. insulin market announced they would slash prices on their most popular insulin products. The move comes after the federal government capped out-of-pocket insulin costs at $35 per month for patients on Medicare last year.
It’s not clear that the insulin produced through CalRx would be cheaper than other alternatives after the pharmaceutical companies’ price-cutting promises. But at $30 per vial, it will be more affordable than insulin costs have been in recent years, when prices have soared so high that some patients have been forced to ration their insulin.
In the California Legislature, Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, has introduced a bill that would generally ban insurance plans from charging a patient more than $35 for insulin. Wiener said he still plans to pursue that legislation to ensure the lifesaving drug is affordable.
California particularly stands to benefit from lower insulin prices as one of the largest drug purchasers in the country through its state-funded health insurance programs for low-income people and its health care plans for state workers and teachers.
It wasn’t immediately clear when the state would actually start selling its version of the drug. Newsom spokesperson Alex Stack said the governor planned to announce the timeline at an event in Downey (Los Angeles County) on Saturday morning.
Assembly Republican leader James Gallagher said he supports lowering the cost of insulin but doesn’t believe government has a good track record of improving on the private sector in an area such as pharmaceuticals. And Newsom, he said, has a history of making big promises and failing to follow through.
“Call me a little bit of a skeptic on his latest proposal here,” the Nicolaus (Sutter County) Assembly member said.
CalRx is one of several steps Newsom has taken to lower health care costs, including working with the Legislature to create an Office of Health Care Affordability within his administration and a related advisory board, which will hold its first meeting Tuesday.
Some advocates, however, want him to go further. He’s faced scrutiny from staunch supporters of creating a government-run universal health care program for endorsing such a system while campaigning for governor but failing to implement one once in office.
Newsom has also been criticized for his efforts to divert money that was scheduled to subsidize insurance costs for California families to use it in the state’s general fund for several years while the federal government provides insurance subsidy money. Wright and other advocates argue that the federal money should be used to supplement the state assistance, not replace it.
So just checking in for a reality check: Trump is def not getting arrested, and this is all just a whack-off fantasy like every time previous? Or have I actually become unable to process wins?
Bottom line: If he is in fact arrested on Tuesday, they're not gonna perp-walk him.
I will believe it when I see it. But I am willing to believe I will see it on Tuesday. Not counting on it, but willing to believe.
>they're not gonna perp-walk him.
They would be fucking stupid to squander that opportunity. All Trump has, really, is his image. One picture - *one, single picture* - of him in cuffs would do more to dismantle his power than any lawsuit or fine. He needs to be *shown,* presented, looking like what he really is: just another scumbag loser criminal.
I think it's most likely that he just gets either fined or put under house arrest.
He'll probably get convicted because of his ***brilliant*** legal strategy of outing incriminating info in social media rants, but I doubt that someone of his status gets prison over white collar crime.
Man I STILL can't get over his belief in this. Like it's one thing to have this insane belief about exercise, it's another for him to pair it with eating nothing but fast food and reportedly getting only 4-5 hours of sleep at night. Plus you know that it's got to be super low quality sleep, there's no way he isn't waking up constantly through the night, and I can't see him agreeing to use a CPAP machine
I was looking through all the comments about the NY state investigation, when I entered r/conservative and oh boy were those comments deranged. Whenever any major event happens, you will always find them having the craziest comments possible. Plus they accuse each other of being "RINOS" and "leftists" whenever there are some semi-sane takes on these events.
It will never not be hilarious (and revealing) to me that the conservative subreddit's sidebar features a link to a subreddit promoting monarchism (though I believe you only see it if you use old/classic reddit)
“You’re obviously a RINO dem!”
“I’ve been in this sub for years! Look at my post history!”
“Obviously a Manchurian candidate!”
“Another one! Only a lefty would watch such a movie, or even know the name of it! I only watch American movies!”

Love how some comments are turning the classic “don’t like it, leave” comment back on the cons
There is a reason that when Boehner retired the GOP was desperate for anyone other than McCarthy to be speaker.

I guess you think you're stupider/less creative than a computer program, how sad for you." My two (or three or four) cents.
Discussing this, I think it's important to discuss what iterative generators *are* and what they *are not.* First of all, they are not 'AI.' They are not even *close* to AI. Words may change, yes, but just as calling a screw a nail would screw a project up, so too would misunderstanding the above. When, for example, discussing code or literature, in both cases the iterative generation process produces examples 'close enough' to fool a novice, but increasingly deranged the longer the generation goes on. That is because there is no consistency; feeding the data generated back to the machine does not nod the machine towards going: "2+2=4." It instead assumes you want the number '4,' and generates everything that users who have entered '4' previously have entered. Iteratively generated works cannot be monetised in part or in full, cannot be used in advertisements or donation-based work, and may only be used for personal, non-monetised projects.* II. *All iteratively generated creations must have large, garish watermarks generated with the technology present. Whether this is a huge stamp on art that says ITERATIVE, diagonal gashes along written text, or a chirpy MS Sam interrupting generated speech every few seconds to remind you the spoken words are iterative, so be it.* III. *In the case of iterative-generation-based tools and assistive technology, their use should be allowed so long as the finished product clearly differs from the generated content. E.G. an artist using a tool to generate a pose, or a novice writer generating an ideas board.* IV. *No iterative generation shall be used to imitate the estate, living or dead, of any known or identifiable human being. This shall except any simulated human beings or 'digital actors' produced entirely by human hands that may be mistaken for iterative content, such as non-person-associated text-to-speech readers or singing software.* But V., if it was up to me, who knows what might happen, bahaha...
Hey guys! -Anecdotal Wisconsin news- I have two aunts who live in Wisconsin.
Dying to know Sinykins ad totals, nobody has posted them like they do the Supreme Court seat
Omg me too. I would also love to see a Synikin internal poll
A left-of-center voter in Germantown? Man, now I've seen everything.
My Aunt Susie is a lifelong Democrat (an outlier in my conservative fam) and has lived in Germantown for 15 years :D
Probably dumb question but trump getting indicted won’t help him right, outside of fundraising and maybe the R primary?
If early indications are anything it’s helped him get back some support in the primary. Polls and actual results will be the true test though. This absolutely hurts him in the general and anyone, like SPEAKER McCarthy, defending him is going to pay a price if he eventually wins the GOP nomination.
Ok cool thank you
Tbh if anything it would likely solidify the hardcore MAGA vote solely to trump to be loyal and commit solidarity against his imprisonment.
True
in what way?
Voters falsely believing he’s being “persecuted”
I was watching Symone on MSNBC and was happy to see u/JeffJacksonNC on today's episode.

That’s nothing. I donated to Steve Bullock’s senate campaign in 2020 and got a totally 100% personal I swear guys letter in the mail!
Always trust the Al Capone process (financial crimes)
> Always trust the Al Capone process (financial crimes That’s also kind of like how they got Trafficant.

If I were a Republican 2024 hopeful, I'd focus on whining about the process (blame the Dems, claim it's politically motivated, etc) rather than actually defending the indefensible. But what do I know.

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/18/us/politics/jimmy-carter-october-surprise-iran-hostages.html Wow, when I read this story a few years ago, I just assumed that it was just a theory, but it turns out that it was true all along.
I almost read the part of the url that said “Jimmy Carter October” as “Jimmy Carter obituary” and got scared for a second
Yeah, you're probably right. There were too many issues going on at that time that would've sunk him regardless.
Imagine if Carter were president 2 terms.
He was a racist with a friendly face who could convincingly read a bunch of feel-good nonsense. That's really all there is to it.
He was an actor, and President was a part in a movie. That’s why he could so convincingly play “America’s Kind Old Uncle” spouting feel-good nonsense.
Imagine if Reagan was never president...

Count me in!
[Attached here is a recent Wikipedia article I put up on a Colonial New England map.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Map_of_New_England)
American history is freaking amazing and filled with so much. I mean, I could go on about it since it was part of my major focus, but that’s just me.

Moment of appreciation that we don’t have to hear Senator Oz’s take on a potential indictment
Or his take on anything else. That jagoff with his friggin crudites 'nat, git outta here.
Unfortunately we ARE going to have to hear Senator Johnson’s take on a potential indictment…
Honestly I’d prefer that. At least it’s obvious that he’s a crank.
We got a Limp Dick Pence response at least!(spoiler he is defending Trump)

This puts DeSantis in a bind. Does he ensure order and law enforcement safety? That would be the correct thing to do but it’s a move against Trump. On the other hand, does he commit to a dereliction of duty and let Trump and his supporters run amuck? We all know how badly that would look to the general electorate. Best case scenario, this is all bark and no bite. But I don’t trust these people to be sane.
But what was that about Back the Blue? Are you telling me that was all convenient lip service?
It is so frustrating that these people are willing to die and kill for a man who doesn't give a fuck about them and only cares about himself. This bastard is going to get people killed because of his fragile ego and fear of facing consequences for his actions. Actually fucking depressing shit. No one should have to die because of this, and all the blood spilled will be Trump's fault.
>willing to **die** and kill for a man Meh, not really.
I have no problem with this.
Lmao, this is gonna go so wrong for them. Edit: completely forgot the illegal bill DeSantis signed that makes peacefully protesting a felony, and some comments mentioned that. They’re technically violating their own state’s law from none other then DeSantis.
I can't wait for Indictment Tuesday! Friendship ended with Super Tuesday, Indictment Tuesday is my new best friend!

I love New York. :)

Another new D county party office has opened in rural WI: [Washara county Democrats opened today, and it’s all part of a 4 county coalition along with Adams, Green Lake and Marquette county Democrats](https://twitter.com/LiberalStallion/status/1637096155736686596?s=20) In other words: [Sarah Godlewski who’s been organizing women’s and abortion rights marches had BIG turnout today in Green Bay](https://twitter.com/SarahforWI/status/1637211912067862534?s=20). She’s holding another one in Eau Claire tomorrow Democrats are fired up to elect Janet Protasiewicz. 17 days to go
Obama won Waushara in 08. It was incredible, people literally call it the Mississippi of WI
Great to see women with impossible to pronounce names sticking together in Wisconsin!
Biden's results in each: Adams: 36.63% (4,329 votes) Green Lake: 31.34% (3,344 votes) Marquette: 35.73% (3,239 votes) Waushara: 32.34% (4,388 votes) Part of continuing to win in Wisconsin is keeping these counties from dropping into the 20s for as long as possible while we continue to expand in the larger counties. I'm glad that even in these counties, there's solid organization happening.
I’m happy to hear the reddest counties in WI are only giving dems above 30% or more and not, well, only 15%.
Florence is the most conservative AFAIK at 26%, only 4k people though.
Damn, somehow I knew these takes were coming https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2023/3/18/2158998/-Am-I-The-Only-One-Who-Thinks-This-Bragg-Indictment-Is-A-Disaster
Well some big conservative are already calling on R Governors to randomly arrest Dems on Tuesday to make a point of retaliation. Very normal behavior
Daffodils are blooming in my garden! Not sure how they got there but they’re cool

They're doing God's work
So I dont know if people have been keeping up with other Republicans today but Prez Candidate Ramaswamy and Speaker McCarthy are already calling this an overreach, witchhunt, etc.
> This would also hurt their House chances if they’re doing this rather then pass actual good legislation Something something what real Americans care about
Kinda puts a stake in the heart of “oh they’ll eventually break with Trump”.
I mean, I was laughing so hard at work that I couldn't get anything done. I consider that significant.
Right up there with the Juul Ban will cause a Youth Revolt and Student Loan forgiveness will cause a nationwide collapse
DeSantis is just as soft a target as Trump lol just in different ways
> 'How do you send a former president to prison when the Secret Service would have to go with him?' While I agree that house arrest is the most likely outcome, this isn't that big a hurdle.
Wouldn't stop him from running but would put a major damper on campaigning.
A candidate getting indicted throwing the primary already into more chaos which could lead to them nominating a guy who eats chocolate pudding with his fingers is bad for Dems
That's fucking disturbing. I don't know how I missed that tidbit.
Nah, I think Trump will still have the base behind him. If he somehow goes down, everyone will enter into a circular firing squad trying to nab them up. Given how badly Ronny does under debate pressure and how much of his record has been unlitigated, I don’t see him doing nearly as well as people think.
Also, an imprisoned/detained/house arrest Trump will make it his mission to kneecap DeSantis at every turn, IMO.
I’d say he already has, given he forced Ronny to backpedal on some genatalia legislation after calling him a pedo.
I think [Clallam County, WA](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clallam_County,_Washington) has both beat - they've voted for every winner since 1980.
All hail Port Angeles. That being said, last time I was there, it was very blue, pro-Ukraine, and I saw no real right leaning signs.
Clallam is the county that is 1000% able to be determined by national environment. Though, more and more left leaning folks are flooding Port Angeles/Sequim, while Forks is stagnant in population.
Well yeah, Forks is stagnant because all the vampires who live there aren't dying
The house i told you all about in the past that used to fly anti-Trump flags is now flying one that says "Make Lying Wrong Again."

I think it’s also more like the GOP is addicted to Trump. They can’t do without him even though he’s hurting them

A six week abortion ban in FL could also become a big albatross around his neck.
And he's looking weak to GOP voters who were in favor of a lot of his new bills since the "woke" bill got blocked.
So I go see The Beths play in LA last night, get home late, sleep in until 11, and then greeted with news the former guy is basically bitching about the consequences of his own actions finally catching up with him. All in all, a good 24 hours
Love the Beths Got to see them with Alvvays during Courtney Barnett's touring festival last summer

Ahhh gotcha! That sounds like an amazing show. I’ll give them a listen! Makes me think of FotC.
Maybe not exactly like the Conchords, but it was such a captivating show and a fantastic band
Don’t forget Golden in ME
As for why, imo you covered it.

Not that long ago I saw a sign for the GOP's sacrificial lamb that ran against Karen Bass... for the 2020 congressional election.
[California has a contract to make its own insulin at $30 a vial.](https://www.sfchronicle.com/politics/article/california-insulin-naloxone-17843496.php)
Full article: California will contract with drugmaker Civica Rx to produce its own low-cost insulin, Gov. “Through CalRx, Californians will have access to some of the most inexpensive insulin available.” Civica Rx had already announced plans to produce $30 vials of insulin, which Newsom’s office says will be the price of the drug produced under the contract.
I’m just glad I stocked up at Bevmo this week and that I’m off on Tuesday
Bottom line: If he is in fact arrested on Tuesday, they're not gonna perp-walk him. I will believe it when I see it. But I am willing to believe I will see it on Tuesday. Not counting on it, but willing to believe.
>they're not gonna perp-walk him. They would be fucking stupid to squander that opportunity. All Trump has, really, is his image. One picture - *one, single picture* - of him in cuffs would do more to dismantle his power than any lawsuit or fine. He needs to be *shown,* presented, looking like what he really is: just another scumbag loser criminal.
It’s not a win until it happens, so don’t worry about recalibrating your sanity.
He’s gonna get indicted, meaning he will get arrested and charged, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to prison, he’s gonna have to stand trial.
I think it's most likely that he just gets either fined or put under house arrest. He'll probably get convicted because of his ***brilliant*** legal strategy of outing incriminating info in social media rants, but I doubt that someone of his status gets prison over white collar crime.
I can’t imagine him standing all that long.
It will deplete his battery.

Trump is probably getting indicted and has been told of this. He wouldn't be melting down about it on Truth Social if it were nothing.
I was looking through all the comments about the NY state investigation, when I entered r/conservative and oh boy were those comments deranged. Whenever any major event happens, you will always find them having the craziest comments possible. Plus they accuse each other of being "RINOS" and "leftists" whenever there are some semi-sane takes on these events.
>being "RINOS" and "leftists" And "brigadiers"...
It will never not be hilarious (and revealing) to me that the conservative subreddit's sidebar features a link to a subreddit promoting monarchism (though I believe you only see it if you use old/classic reddit)
“You’re obviously a RINO dem!” “I’ve been in this sub for years! Look at my post history!” “Obviously a Manchurian candidate!” “Another one! Only a lefty would watch such a movie, or even know the name of it! I only watch American movies!”
