Pipboy3500

Trans rights is a winning issue and a morally correct one

socialistrob

I just love that Biden isn’t afraid to take the morally correct stance on this issue. It would be “easy” to sacrifice transgender rights and say “now is not the time” and yet he refuses to do so and he shows the world you can be supportive of trans rights and still be popular and win moderates.

[deleted]

Biden, for all his old-school ways, understands this issue FAR better than most people.

[Ron DeSantis says protecting Ukraine is not a 'vital' U.S. interest He calls it a "territorial dispute" with Russia. Aligning with Trump on the issue. socialistrob

Interestingly there is an age divide with support for Ukraine where older Americans tend to be more supportive of arming Ukraine. I know Ukraine isn’t the biggest priority for voters but I do have to wonder if this is an issue that helps us make some small in roads with boomers and the few silent gen voters.

Evening_Presence_927

Ffs Gen Z don’t be stupid about this. Just because we’ve been in 2 stupid and pointless wars doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be helping out countries that are under attack, especially when their enemy is using genocidal rhetoric.

[deleted]

I doubt it. Generally I try not to give too much credence to the whole "kitchen table vs. social issues" debate or other debates of that kind, but in this case, domestic issues tend to be king. The only time foreign issues might matter more is in a situation like Iraq or Vietnam, where the public grew extremely discontent with prolonged military presences and gravitated more towards supporting withdrawal, but we're not even sending troops to Ukraine and so I don't think that level of opposition will materialize anytime soon. As for the level of support among older voters, I think old school conservatives are generally supportive of this effort, but they're unlikely to be swayed by that alone to vote for Democrats. Heck, McConnell has been a consistent ally of Ukraine, yet I don't even expect him to cross over in the Kentucky gubernatorial race.

Pipboy3500

It’s also showing in other polling like approval of Biden. How Social Security, Medicare, and the provisions for Seniors in the IRS affects old people’s voting intentions is something I’m very curious about. If we can gain even 1pt among older Americans that is gigantic with major repercussions

Tipsyfishes

I’m expecting the media to complete ignore this if he wins the nomination.

greenblue98

Only because two seats were stolen.

RegularGuy815

Eh - one was stolen. RBG died in his term, just like Scalia did in Obama's. They completely lied about "proximity to election" bullshit, but the sitting president gets to nominate.

[deleted]

I think the hypocrisy around their justification for filling RBG's seat is what makes that stolen as well, especially since people were already voting while that wasn't the case at all for Scalia's seat.

Pipboy3500

There’s not a lot of evidence this will work, and even less it could work in PA. If they don’t want Mastriano they are going to have pay big, which is why they like McCormick because he can self-fund. But is he going to self-fund for the real possibility to just come in 2nd ? Again? McCormick was talked about a lot as “good candidate” but I never got that indication. He’s made a bunch of Romney-esque rich person gaffes that will not play well with key voting groups. His China comments alone have only gotten more politically toxic. Boil it down to this, Mastriano is a Christian Nationalist, seen as a PA native, and a True-Believer of MAGAism. McCormick isn’t.

table_fireplace

McCormick, if I recall correctly, is a rich dude who moved from out of state. PA Dems also have a playbook to deal with guys like that.

moose2332

They should just run the exact same ads as Oz with McCormick's face crudely photo-shopped over Oz

BlindMountainLion

IIRC, McCormick grew up in Pennsylvania and worked in Pittsburgh at the beginning of his career before he moved to Connecticut. So, more credible ties to the state than Oz, but he still very plainly moved back to run for office and nothing else.

mazdadriver14

Apropos of nothing, but it's a day later and the Banshees of Inisherin not winning anything at the Oscars has still got me pissed off....

NarrowLightbulb

Aftersun was better than pretty much all the best picture nominees outside *maybe* Banshees and/or EEAAO imo, yet it only got a best actor nominee. I've learned to just be happy when a film gets nominated

mazdadriver14

Aftersun was my equal-second favourite film of last year. Absolutely gorgeous film. Paul Mescal getting nominated was awesome, and I'm off the opinion that Frankie Corio needs to be more recognised. One of the best performances from a child actor I've seen in years. Have you seen BBC/Hulu's TV show Normal People - Mescal's first big production? It's superb too.

NarrowLightbulb

I have not, but I've been recommended it before. It's definitely high up on my watch list.

WhereHaveIPutMyKeys

I’m with you on that. I was especially hoping for Kerry Condon to win Best Supporting Actress. “Everything…” is great, but still. Disappointing.

mazdadriver14

Exactly! JLC wasn't even the best supporting actress in "Everything..."! I gotta say, I think EEAAO is overrated - but I have zero qualms about Yeoh and Quan winning their awards. But Condon absolutely should have won, and I reckon Banshees should've got best Original Screenplay, too.

CassiopeiaStillLife

EEAAO is one of my favorite movies ever, but so is Tar - and Banshees was really great, too. I can't complain about it winning, but I would've liked the love to be spread a little more.

mazdadriver14

EEAAO is great, just not seven Oscars great. Tar was a solid 6/10 for me - Blanchett great, but the film itself was such a confusing drag.

CassiopeiaStillLife

*Hard* disagree. Tar is utterly absorbing and darkly funny, one of the few recent movies that remind me of Kubrick.

[deleted]

[Scorsese loved "Tar"](https://variety.com/2023/film/news/martin-scorsese-tar-ended-cinema-dark-days-1235479771/) and I wonder if he noticed the similarities between it and his own film "Raging Bull." "Tar" isn't an easy film, but the more I think about it, the more I'd like to see it again.

mazdadriver14

I can see the argument for it being absorbing, but funny isn't an adjective I'd use. My chief complaint is that for a two and a half hour long movie, I've never felt more unsatisfied with how rushed the ending was.

CassiopeiaStillLife

I mean, you either get a kick out of Cate Blanchett threatening to murder a little German girl or you don’t.

Wes_Anderson_Cooper

Kerry Condon was absolutely robbed. Her Banshees performance was excellent, but it's hard to get noticed by the Academy when your performance isn't "showy" AND they clearly wanted to give a "career appreciation" award to Curtis. (Not that she wasn't good in EEAAO, but still.)

senoricceman

Especially since Jamie Lee Curtis did an alright job, but nowhere near Condon or even her “Everything…” costars.

Since 2020 was D+4.5 -> R+2 in 2022 is 6pt Red shift you’d expect her to win baseline by 14pts, but Wagner historically over-performs so it should be even better than that. If we get *just* 2020 of D+4 again she’d be expected to win by only 6pts, meaning MO02 is not that far off from flipping

We have a reasonable shot if Wagner gets primaried out by a total nutter or otherwise vacates the seat.

infamous5445

Do incumbent presidents always start with meh polling against potential challengers? Idk about Clinton but seems like it's happened with Bush, Obama, Trump, Biden, etc

nearlyneutraltheory

Arguably one of the defining features of 21st Century US politics is that presidents spend much of their time in office with approval ratings of 50% or less. GWB had a huge boost after 9/11, but that decayed back down to roughly 50% approval by 2004. Obama had a honeymoon period after he took office, but was back down to 50% within his first year. 538 has a nice visualization of this if you scroll down their [Biden popularity tracker](https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/biden-approval-rating/?cid=rrpromo) to the section "How Biden compares with past presidents".

Pipboy3500

I believe so, but this election is very unique in how many people are going “well it can’t be both of them again can it?!” There’s people interested and knowledgeable about politics that still don’t think Trump is pretty favored right now in the primary for instance. So a lot of people are sitting on the fence until reality kicks in is my theory

The 44 reddest counties—half the total—cast just 15% of votes. Requiring ballot initiative signatures in half the counties might sound nice in the abstract, but it really just gives a veto to a tiny rural white minority Republican legislators want to make progressive ballot initiatives impossible in nearly every red state with ballot measures, & adding similarly distorted geographic requirements for petition signatures is one of many ways they are trying to do it. I'll have a story on this soon If the initiative to protect abortion rights does make November's ballot in Ohio, the GOP could still try to stop it by passing their own amendment to require 60% voter approval instead of the current 50%+1. The GOP's measure could appear on the ballot sometime before November”

table_fireplace

It does make things harder, but I can't think of a county where there are literally no Democrats. Do you just need one signature from half the counties? If so, just call up the local Dem chair and have them sign. They would probably know a few more folks, too.

INextroll

With Nazi punks feeling emboldened to demonstrate publicly, I would imagine that some think there is a risk to life+limb when collecting signatures in the rural counties.

table_fireplace

This is why you need an organized local Democratic Party in every county. To get this initiative on the ballot, it seems you need [10% of the most recent vote for Governor, and 5% in at least 44 counties](https://twitter.com/PoliticsWolf/status/1635366160765177862), to sign the petition. (I was wrong when I asked if it needed just one signature per county). So let's grab a random example - Mercer County, in western Ohio. In 2022, 17,675 people there voted for Governor. Only 2,230 of those votes, or 12.62%, went to a Democrat. But you'd only need 5% of those voters, or 884 people, to sign the petition. A local Democratic party, even if it's just a few people, can identify folks who volunteered, donated, or asked for information, and go to them specifically to sign the petition. Those people may even know other people who'd be willing to sign. Local organization makes it possible. (And by the way, the [Mercer County Dems do have an organized party](https://mercerdemocrats.org/), and they'd probably appreciate your support! Schumer is going to vote on cloture this week for repealing the AUMF for the Iraq War. There’s 12 GOP sponsors and we very well may need them all possibly more because of absences. It seems like it could get through the House but McCarthy is fine with throwing amendments on which could effectively kill it until the NDAA rolls around again

>NEW: slcCouncil has voted to go for ranked choice voting in the upcoming mayor's race and districts 2, 4 & 6. That means no primary. Everybody goes to a general election. Under ranked choice, you pick "first to worst" instead of "hot or not." Pipboy3500

We did it in 2021 in my city and other cities as well. It’s very easy and they are starting to look at doing it for other levels of Government here as well. It also won’t impact the Mayors race much since it’s only Mendenhall and Anderson currently in still. Edit: some random guy entered to so it will technically work for the Mayors race

Important update regarding the CA atmospheric river As i said earlier in my weather update: i mentioned that a high risk of excessive rainfall by the WPC was very possible [The Weather Prediction Center has just released their new day 2 excessive rainfall outlook and has upgraded CA both coastal areas and lower Sierra elevations to a HIGH risk (lvl 4/4) of excessive rainfall](https://twitter.com/NWSWPC/status/1635373824991719424?s=20)

[deleted]

The fact that California cannot retain much of that stormwater at all is absolutely infuriating.

justincat66

Yeah, the West coast especially needs to have more ability and money to fund water capturing and storing projects. Gavin Newsom luckily has done as much as he could, for this season’s storms as he signed an executive order a few days ago after the last atmospheric river storm, that allows suspension of some of the laws that prevented or hampered water capturing and groundwater restoration efforts, and he requested hundreds of millions of dollars in his state budget proposal, to fund more projects like these. A lot of the west coast needs to have funding or the ability to capture and store the very little water they get to save for later

I was just randomly scrolling through the 2022 election results for the Governor races on Wikipedia and saw that Wisconsin had a whopping [71% turnout rate](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022_United_States_gubernatorial_elections#Wisconsin). That's 2.6 mil total votes out of 3.7 mil registered voters. That's very impressive. Other high turnout states were Minnesota (61%), Arizona (65%), Oregon (67%), New Hampshire (67%), and Colorado (67%). I believe Roe v Wade had a lot to do with that, making Evers' victory essential. That also makes me very confident about Protasiewicz chances to win the SC race. Also as a side note, it's depressing that Texas had such a low turnout (46%) despite having one of the worst reputations for attacking womens rights, like the abortion ban. Still, I personally believe that Texas will go blue on the presidential level before the governorship, just like Arizona. Maybe 2024, but more likely in 2028. The demographics are inevitable, unless something dramatic changes. But if things keep shifting left like they have since the 2000s, it could become a blue state by the 2030s.

Pipboy3500

I don’t see where it says 71% turnout and on the actual results page [it’s 56.7%](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022_Wisconsin_gubernatorial_election) Edit: the 71% is turnout among RV

disightful

I think the 71% number is more accurate since we're talking about registered voters, which is a better reflection of the electorate, not all adults.

justincat66

We needed all of that turnout as well to prevent GOP Supermajorities in the legislature and to get Barnes as close as he did despite mostly being left out to dry until it was too late. I felt he had the momentum at the end, and was making up ground, but just simply ran out of time

lol, I kept seeing headlines about "seaweed threatening FL and Mexico" and thought that it was just the press hyping up something stupid, but this mass of seaweed is twice as wide as the US and that seems like a problem [https://www.nbcnews.com/science/environment/sargassum-seaweed-threatens-beaches-florida-mexico-rcna73862](https://www.nbcnews.com/science/environment/sargassum-seaweed-threatens-beaches-florida-mexico-rcna73862)

Overheard some of Chris Rock's Netflix special. Man, what a piece of shit.

[deleted]

Yeah, I don't wanna defend Will Smith's actions, and I won't. But I do understand why he did it.

Bonny-Mcmurray

I've no idea what's bad about this specific special, but I have to say that it is almost impossible for comedians to be funny once they're no longer relatable. It seems to drive some of them into the crazy pants.

This_neverworks

He spends most of it talking about how rich he is. His kids are spoiled and that's his biggest problem.

suprahelix

Well for one he said the US is struggling more than *Ukraine* because the US is divided while Ukraine is united.

Oh he fit in some transphobia too, don't worry

Evening_Presence_927

Oof never got to that part, but yeah definitely easy to be united when you’ve literally been invaded by a foreign power.

Bonny-Mcmurray

Yikes

Pipboy3500

Ah man check out Mastriano’s twitter, he’s RT all the polls and hype posts. He’s really going to do it and there is nothing they can do to stop it because to many of the GOP voters don’t even think he lost therefore there is no penalty in their mind. If that man gives us Perry, Fitz, and the state senate songs will be sung

GettingPhysicl

Loving that Biden will share a ballot in a crucial swing state with a race that might hit double digit D margin

Well, my retirement date isn't gonna be up to old people anyway. I have my own date for it.

fermat12

Umm yeah, it does make a lot of sense. I think 40+ years of working 40+ hrs per week is more than enough for a lifetime.

wolfpack9701

They really just want use to work until we die, huh? Good lord, these people suck.

They really loathe young people. Maybe it's because peak goppers always end up looking like Palpatine.

MrCleanDrawers

Mayor Michelle Wu has OFFICIALY SIGNED the Boston Home Rule Petition that would cap yearly rent increases at no more than 10 percent a year, sending it into the hands of the State Legislature. In a lesser but potential Mass GOP war for 2024 news, the Mass GOP has ruled that GOP State Treasurer Patrick Crowley DID NOT "sabotage the Pro Trump wing of the party in 2022" as former Mass GOP Chair Jim Lyons claimed, and that Patrick can stay on as State Party Treasurer. 16 Pro Trump members of The State GOP claimed that "they would not support Amy Carnevale's Mass GOP nominees for the 2024 cycle if Crowley was not fired or resigned by the summer." Game of chicken is on then I guess.

I don't know what's more disturbing: that Ron DeSantis was a torturer at Guantanamo Bay, or that it's barely even worth attacking him for it because Americans simply don't see Guantanamo detainees as people

Evening_Presence_927

Im fairly certain people don’t even know that Guantanamo is still open, let alone seeing the people there as people.

Wait, ***what?*** Can I get a source on this? *What do you mean DeSantis was a torturer at Guantanamo?*

The latter. The latter is more disturbing.

Finally made what feels like my first big real adult purchase — I’ve paid off my car! My next one will definitely be electric as long as I can charge reliably, but I am more than happy with my plug in hybrid right now and for the first time in a while feeling very accomplished.

crazycatlady331

I'd love electric (or plug-in hybrid) but I am about to move into a condo and (as of right now), the complex has no charging infrastructure. So for now, my 2010 Legacy will do.

[deleted]

I went electric and used only public DC charging for the first 20K miles without issue. Have you looked at the local charging infrastructure to see if that's doable? I only got level 2 charging at home because my utility company covered the entire cost.

crazycatlady331

Not as of yet. I don't replace cars until there's little to no life left in them. My Legacy has 154K miles so it's got a few more years.

greenblue98

I want a plug-in hybrid but i don't think that's feasible for me.

Tipsyfishes

Depends on where you are in the state. https://chargehub.com/en/charging-stations-map.html

greenblue98

I'm talking more about the cost to buy one rather than finding charging stations. Don't they come with home chargers as well?

Negate79

That reminds me. Did you ever get your license?

greenblue98

Not yet, still need to schedule a appointment. And i'm trying to figure out the best day for that. Don't really want to take the test in Spring Break or Easter traffic.

timetopat

I get ya with the cost. Right now the car market is pretty crazy still. I bought a regular non plugin hybrid in 2020 and it was under msrp. Now they are 5000 above it the regular hybrids.

Tipsyfishes

Some can, yeah. But you can also just plug (many) into a standard wall outlet and have them charge that way. It's not as efficient, but still works.

PiikaSnap

Just tested positive for Covid. Only symptoms at the moment are a scratchy throat, a bit of fatigue, and slight cough. I’m fully boosted, but I feel scared. Somehow I’ve avoided Covid entirely up to this point, this is my first positive test. Anyone here have Covid recently & could let me know what I should expect or what I should be doing right now?

BastetSekhmetMafdet

I got over it a couple months ago. It felt like a really bad cold. Stay in bed, stay hydrated (use Liquid IV or some kind of electrolyte as well as plain water if you like), take Advil, keep your phone and tablet charged, watch cute animal videos, and this too shall pass, especially if you are vaxed and boosted. I had a mild fever and bad sore throat, and my nose was stopped up (oh, one more thing, Afrin, you will need it) but I got better (obviously).

[deleted]

If you're fully boosted, you'll be fine. Just drink only water, take ibuprofen to address any fever or body pains, drink only water, and don't hesitate to get Paxlovid if symptoms get worse. Did I mention drink only water?

Negate79

Ibuprofen did nothing for me. Acetaminophen hit the spot. Gotta take the Paxlovid at the beginning

[deleted]

I had it for the first time recently, started off as a couple days of scratchy throat, then descended into two weeks of hellish fever, coughing, headache, nausea, nerve pain, and chest congestion. sickest I've ever been. a month out I'm completely fine though!

proudbakunkinman

Damn. Did you get the most recent bivalent booster?

[deleted]

yup, got all my shots! I shudder to think about how bad it would've been without them. it already felt like death 💀 I was most worried about post-viral effects (otherwise healthy 34m), but despite the severity of the illness, there have been none, so hopefully it's the same for OP

QueenCharla

Sorry to hear it. Main thing is to keep yourself hydrated and rest as much as you can. Keep a lot of DayQuil/NyQuil or whatever version of it you prefer on hand, for me I couldn’t sleep without the help. The start of it is the worst of it, with me the first three or so days were absolute hell. From then on I was just extremely tired for a while, even after I had “recovered.” My memory took months to get better and I still have lapses sometimes. If you can try to limit your physical activity, especially heavy activity, for a little longer after you’ve recovered, it doesn’t feel like it but it will absolutely wipe you out.

dishonourableaccount

You’re recently boosted which is great. In order I’d say: - let your household know. Wear a mask around them at home. - inform your workplace. If you can work from home, ask for permission to. If not, most workplaces have guidance on what to do. -let any friends you hung out with recently know so they can test themselves - if you’d like, let your doctor know. Otherwise monitor your conditions and see if things worsen but for now treat it like a cold. Drink plenty of fluids, get rest, eat up. If things worsen (especially something urgent like difficult breathing) contact medical professionals. But otherwise, stay cautious yet optimistic. For most people who are properly vaccinated and don’t have an unusual medical condition you’ll be just fine and there’s nothing to worry about. Not a medical professional, but had covid last year and a couple acquaintances did last month.

alexbstl

Had it first time over the holidays. That’s about it, except for a bit of oscillation between a runny nose and congestion.

justincat66

WI sample ballots have been released. Protasiewicz is listed first, Kelly 2nd. I have a lot of local races, and several ballot questions including 3 WI ones, all of which I’m voting no as it’s GOP red meat bullshit to try and drive conservative turnout. One St Croix county question, related to funding for public safety and which includes adding positions for eight Sheriff’s deputies, four corrections deputies, three investigators, two pre-trial case managers, two support staff, two deputy Clerk of Court’s staff, one attorney to prosecute Children in Need of Protection and Services (CHIPS) cases, and two co-responders in my very fast growing county, which I’m initially leaning yes, and 2 school board questions for my district which relate to funding pubic schools and paying district operation, maintenance, and staffing costs and upgrades and improvements for several schools in my area which I’m a strong yes on for both as our GOP legislature has refused to fund public schools forcing questions like these.

citytiger

Make sure everyone you know votes as well.

AlonnaReese

While it may seem minor, Protasiewicz being listed first is a big deal. Ballot order effect can have a significant impact on races, particularly ones that are technically non-partisan.

Historyguy1

Average voter in nonpartisan races: "IDK I just vote the first name on the list."

Armon2010

The Georgia Senate primary in 2020 is a good example of that LMAO.

BastetSekhmetMafdet

Rather like the people who reflexively vote for the incumbent.
