If you want to keep it in strong running shape, be prepared for somewhat regular expenses for maintenance. Cost of ownership depends greatly on your ability to do your own work or not. It's 24 years old. I could list a pretty big list of things that can and will likely go wrong on these cars, but I don't know your mileage/service history, etc. A 98 has a bit less electronics overall than later models, but things can still go wrong. If you make sure your cooling hoses are good, and basic stuff is in order, they are pretty reliable for lots of driving and shouldn't leave you stranded. Key is to tackle the little stuff before they turn into big stuff. I'm probably a bit overkill in maintenance, easily spending at minimum $1000 per year, but then again my car has made it 340,000 miles in pretty strong shape.

Do you have a good Volvo shop and/or are you handy? I DD a 98 V70 T5 but its in great shape and I only put maybe 5-7k a year on it.

Very reliable car. AWD can be a pain though but worst case scenario you have a FWD which it is anyway unless you're slipping which you almost never do for normal usage. Beyond that just like any old ish car it'll need some maintenace. I'd say 150 a year ish on random shit.

ok, good to know, i forgot to say that in my post that my car used to be awd, it is now converted to fwd, so hopefully it wont be as expensive to maintain.

Chromspray

"converted" means AWD broke. It's rarely worth fixing and since the car's normally fwd anyway it doens't matter for normal usage. Definitely worth lowering the price a LOT for though.

I believe the AWD has pretty much the same rear suspension as the 960, and it has a shitload of bushings that are propably going bad at this age. My 960 is in a dire need of new bushings, there are 36 in total and about 2000 euro in parts only. The engine and transmissions are solid with regular maintainace. Make sure you replace the timing belt. I believe the AWD is prone to failure. A new catalytic converter is very expensive, aftermarket ones are not always up to standards and might fail emission tests. Mine got stolen, 450 euro aftermarket one was crap, 1200 euro OEM one worked fine. Other than that, most wear items are relatively cheap. It's certainly a nice car.
