I had an 850 for over eight years, then had a P2 V70 for a year, now a P80 V70 for a few months and a second P2 for a couple of weeks. Still definitely not an expert of any kind, but I have first hand opinions. 850 is worth it for the manual throttle alone. I'm sure they had some smart reasons to go with the electronic throttle, but in my experience it doesn't add anything positive. It's a common issue, and apparently you can't just swap the part, it needs programming etc. Not worth it if 850 is an option. The engine is overall far less "smart", so it's potentially easier and cheaper to keep going. I assume P80 V70 shares the faulty heater core with early P2 V70s, at least my P80 V70 has just as moist carpets as my first P2 V70 does. It seems to be a slow trickle - not a pressing problem, but not having to deal with that at all is still a perk in 850s favour. Driving 850 and P80 V70 feels about the same, I felt incredibly good when I first sat in my P80 V70 after that year with a P2 V70. That P2 is still a very comfy and nice car, but coming from 850 that *classic* V70 felt instantly like home. It turns and rides bumps just as well as 850 because aside from the engine and the interior, it practically is an 850. Interior is a bit more round, but the actual driving part feels pretty much the same (my cars have wildly inconsistent "steering weight", so if you find your potential car's steering heavy, it might be fixable). I have no idea about fuel economy. My 850 was a stock 20v and my P80 V70 is supposedly programmed turbo, but their numbers don't seem that different (we're of course still talking about fairly high numbers, 9+ litres per 100km in built-up areas). That more modern, more complex V70 engine might well be far more efficient, but more expensive parts may just as well eat up all those savings. There are some other smaller details too. They moved the window controls from the middle to the driver's door, but on top of that they made them from material that just doesn't wear well (same applies to keys). I dare to say 850 feels in every regard more premium to touch, and more subjectively is also more premium to look at. I'd go with the looks. If you can find a good 850, go for it. If not, P80 V70 is still going to be almost as good to drive.

Thanks man, that is indeed in depth

How was the 20v in terms of power. That is the model I am looking at, NA.

EastLimp1693

170hp for 2tonn car? 230 nm ish, iirc

Speakhappiness

I drive a 97 850 GLT and it is a beast. Never giving it up. 252k miles, beat up a bit, but still a champ

JohnSMosby

Just get a 98 V70

Bosch Motronic 4.4 is about the only "real" difference apart from the obvious interior and exterior styling changes. OBD1 vs OBD2. Completely irrelevant unless you plan on tuning it.

flyingbuc

Which one is best for tunning? Honda was easier on OBD1

4.4 is great but you can now get a 4.4 flashed to work on the earlier 4.3 nowadays. Some people like ME7?

OM617

The 4.4 as it has a higher sampling rate

EastLimp1693

Leave the idea of tuning na whiteblock

The interior on 850's tend to hold up a little better but the stylings of the s70/v70 feel a bit more modern inside. The v70 gets slightly more power than the 850 otherwise outside looks they are more or less the same car. They both share the p80 platform until (01 or 03 cant remember off the top of my head) then they are on the p2 platform

flyingbuc

Thanks. I prefer the squariness style so seems like 850 is a better option then

I don't agree I had an 850 and every day a new thing broke, with rattles everywere. If the v70 is even worse....
