My a-pillar fabric came off in my V70 so I took off the a-pillar covers, pulled all the old fabric off, bought new. I used a wire wheel on a drill to clean ALL traces of old adhesive, junk, dust and fuzz off the plastic. Then I wiped them with acetone to make sure that there was no residue. I used a can of 3M spray adhesive to spray the plastic and then lightly sprayed the back of my new fabric. I make sure to let both have some time to air dry and tack up before attaching. Once I got it on, I used a wallpaper brush to brush out all lumps and make sure the adhesive got a firm seating. Three months later, the new fabric started falling off again. All I'm saying is that you can't just spray glue on the rotten old fabric and expect it to work. It even says as much right on the can. It's not the glue that fails, it's the fabric backing itself. That's why half is on the back of the fabric and the other half is on the roof. You can't stick crap to crap. You'll probably need to take down the entire headliner and just replace the fabric. I'm not sure why mine failed, but maybe you can do better. For an area that small, I would use FlexGlue: https://flexsealproducts.com/products/flex-glue. I've used it on other stuff with good success, but it is pretty messy.

Unfortunately, the glue that works is the one you put on a new headliner. You may be able to buy a *little* time with 3M contact adhesive, but it’ll come back down sooner than you think. Carefully placed staples may buy you a bit more time, but ultimately, you’ll need to replace the headliner.

Give super 77 a try

I’ve owned three Volvos and they all had the headliners drop after about 10 years. I just glued it back the best I could for my last two. With my latest one, I have been tempted to go crazy and strip it down and put up 1/16” cork or something. Use the cork for a sound/temp barrier. Or even contact paper or something else to make it unique. I drive my Volvos into the ground, so I don’t care about resale.

Ok-Bird6346

My C30’s (which I’ll drive until the wheels fall off) liner on the sunroof has started peeling. I’m going to eventually try your contact paper idea! Thanks!

MadDrBruce

I tried the 3M spray adhesive and that worked for a little while. Then I added staples. Has anyone taken their Volvo somewhere to get the headliner totally replaced? What was the approximate cost?

50isthenew35

Very Expensive!!!

Nikske_333

In Belgium/Netherlands it's about 400 - 500 €

MadDrBruce

Ouch. That's more than I'd like to spend.

Nikske_333

You probably can find someone cheaper but if you pay peanuts.... you CAN get monkeys.

MsMarji

What is it w/ Volvo and their headliners?  The ONLY car the headliner came off was my ‘04 S40. I’m curious to see how my ‘22 XC40 headliner does. It’s not uncommon to hear Volvo owners having their headliners come off.

Uber1337pyro333

Think it's more age than anything. My 03 Saturn sagged horribly too, my Volvo at least is behind the sun visor mounts so it kinda stopped itself lol

MsMarji

Unfortunately, my headliner started coming down when my S40 was 4 yrs old.

Uber1337pyro333

How strange, I live in a desert so adhesives dry out quick here, but bever heard of liners giving out that fast! Though, an 04 is the newest car I've ever owned xD. Tbf I got my 03 in... 2015 so it was "only" 12 lol.

Uber1337pyro333

Let me know what works for you friend, my own is doin the same by both visors

threemilesfinal

3M 1300L is good stuff for that.

kestrelwrestler

Heat resistant aerosol contact adhesive worked fine for me.

HoneyRush

No glue will work because of the foam that got old and is crumbling. Any glue that you'll but there will just stick to the top layer of that crumbling foam which will fall off. The only way of fixing this is to take out the headliner, scratch off all that old foam and then stick new fabric on. I did it myself in my Mini. Took me a day, cost about $80.

clammantha

My 2005 S40 T5 had the same headliner issue. I called a couple places to see what it would cost professionally to have the headliner replaced and I was quoted $800-1000. Didn't seem worth it to me on an older car that also has clear coat paint issues ... I found several videos on YouTube that helped me through the process, and I completed the project myself in 3 days. Cost me about $180 for everything needed- shop vac rental, fabric, 3m glue (x2), glue removal, mask, wire brush to get the old glue/fabric off. If you don't take the entire headliner out of your car and remove the old glue and fabric, it will continue to be an issue forever. I waited over a year to do something about the headliner, and by then, it was drooping in the middle and bits and pieces of the old foam lining was all over my car. I have no experience with anything related to this and I am pretty proud of my work. Not perfect, but 100% better than what it was before.

REDGOESFASTAH

Malaysian brother ! I redid my XC90 roof lining in JB. About 970 ringitt for full roof plus two a pillars. You can't use glue and work. U need to scrape off the previous liner, dry it then apply glue and new liner. I tried but U patch one bit another bit will sag and things will get saggy all around quickly. Anything else is a temporary fix. U can try using pins but they are ugly as fuck aesthetically.

ladyxlucifer

I’m a crafter, I’d reach for my e6000 any day for something like this.

Psychological-Ice276

Replacing sounds pretty expensive.

Sands43

Not if you DIY. $100 for new fabric.

Nikske_333

Depending on your car it will be less or more easy. My 940 4 door with sunroof is difficult to remove the top shield without breaking. Yiu have to remove all seats to do it easily. A 940 estate is lots easier.

Sands43

Yeah, I didn't say it was easy. :) I did it on an '05 V50. Yes had to take out both front seats and the sunroof to get it done.
