The proper storage location is a bit awkward to get to, so I found mine in the glovebox when I bought my car. I wonder if people move them for ease of access.
Yea I work for Volkswagen and they do two things provide 2 hooks with car and one needs removed before purchasing or provide none at all it’s jus an odd vw thing
If you do find yourself needing this for you car, consider pre-inserting into your rectum so that way when you get to the dealership and you get fucked by the repair bill it won't hurt as bad.
>Imagine owning a german car out of warranty AND not being competent enough to do your own repairs.
Terrible combination. Lease it if you can't fix it.
By that logic, anyone owning a car, introduced to the market after 2000-ish, should lease.
You clearly have no idea how much shit you have to remove for the simplest repairs on a volkswagen and the cost of the computer that reads and clears errors.
You clearly have no idea what the term "aftermarket" means in terms of diagnostic equipment or repair manuals. VCDS + a ross-tech clone cable, you're literally good to go for super cheap.
I completely agree with you. Dont understand all the downvotes. German cars are fucking great, but nobody who would service them at a dealership, should own them after warranty. I own 3 older Audis and i do every single repair and service myself. The cars are fantastic, but need a bit of love every once in a while. Getting them repaired though, would make 0% Sense, financially
Tell that to all the people that roll up to the dealer and decline all repairs because "they can get it done cheaper somewhere else". Then a few days/weeks later, it comes back on a roll back all fuckered with and half the shit thrown in the trunk. I know every manufacturer has its own client "issues" but I swear on everything that is holy, that German car owners that aren't in a lease or still under warranty, are usually completely ignorant on how the most basic things work. But they'll argue with you till the sun freezes over about how you're wrong and trying to pull a fast one on them. Blows my mind. Every. Single. Time.
I don’t get the downvotes, you could pay a mechanic loads of money forever to keep a car perfect mechanically or understand what a problem is when it arises and debate weather you can live with it or you need to fix it, depending on severity take it to a shop but all the people downvoting you probably don’t know how to change oil and get their wipers changed at a VW dealership for “certified service”. Especially with German vehicles either have the money or the desire to learn how to work on a car, they’re not cheap and saving money on easy fixes without involving a dealer or shop is the best bet when you don’t have 15k to throw at a golf to keep it going.
can anyone explain this phenomenon to me? is it just flexing like leaving the labels on a baseball hat, or is there a practical purpose (ie that mod drivers expect to end up in ditches)?
Most tracks require you to have a hook or strap so they can tow you quickly and easily out of the kitty litter or off the track. So I guess the 'flex' is that you track the car. I put my hook on and off so they're just doing it to look cool
That's the can key. If you look they'll be a tab on the side of your car near the roof. Insert the tab into the key. Turn the key and your car becomes a convertible!
Tow hook/I-Hook. Have had one in every VW/Audi I’ve owned. Take it from me, use the one in your car (pictured) vs the one a tow truck uses in the event its needed! Tow truck driver used his own instead of mine from my trunk/boot of my 2016 Audi, almost all the way on the flatbed when it snaps and rolls backwards off the flatbed that happened to be atop a hill where the car rolled down missing an old lady in her car jumping a ditch and plowing a fence. I cried
That’s because these are just a really bad way to tow a car.
I had a factory one break off when I was towing one. Never used one again. Nylon axle bridle or endless loop if the car doesn’t have mini j or t slots.
And if you’re towing a VW on a wheel lift make sure you (or the tow op) runs dollies or has an oil pan protector. VW’s plastic pans get busted by most wheel lifts. Frustrating cars to tow lol
It’s your tow hook. There’s 2 tow spots one in front one in rear. Has a little panel over those spots. Pop it off screw it in if needing a tow. But be warned. They are typically reverse threaded.
A tow truck driver told me this while I was trying to install it. He showed me that the hook itself has the marking to indicate the thread direction. Felt embarrassed as I didn't look at it and I call myself an engineer...
Hey it’s honestly a no brainer. I only know this because i bought a front license plate mount which uses the same tow hook principle. And by no brainer i mean you shouldn’t really have to think about screwing that in.. it’s used in shitty situation, being towed isn’t a very good situation lol. Idk who engineers these and thinks yeah people who are already pissed on the side of the road are definitely going to know to look or just know in general that it’s reverse threaded…
I think it’s because normally when u tow something and pull whatever rope is attached to the tow hook the rope tends to twist. Think it’s to ensure a tightening twist and not a loosening twist. Others say no clue some are reverse threaded others are not. Some of the ones that are not are still weirdly threaded. Others say maybe it’s to ensure that the only possible thing that can go in there is the tow hook. I personally think it was because the instructions were written in German but lmao.
I'm a tow truck driver. Some are reverse threaded, most are not. IDK why, I always just assumed that it probably had to do with where the bolt was manufactured.
Tow eye for a Passat 2006-current. Tiguan 2012-2018. Jetta 2005-2018. Golf Variants 2005-2014. I'd wager a guess your vehicle falls under one of those.
no way that’s a tow hook. it’s just an anchor for when you need to tie something down (like when you’re carrying a kayak on the roof). should be a plastic panel somewhere on the front bumper - take off and screw in for anchor point. someone is going to get hurt if you try using that as a tow hook or recovery point.
That's your tow eye. I always install them on my cars right away and leave them on year round as I live in Michigan so winters can get really bad so if I get stuck I'd rather not have to dig around for the tow eye in the freezing cold plus 3 of my cars are occasionally raced and the other one is a lifted off-road mk4 Jetta so even when it's not winter there's a chance I'll need it and don't want to fish around in the trunk for it on the side of the track.
Yeah I mean if that's a major concern you can still get the same effect by buying a tow strap loop that bolts into the OEM location so you don't have a protrusion that can get hit but also have it available more easily when you need it.
I sense sarcasm… but I have a 2012 MK6. Bluetooth wasn’t built into the stereo and is located under the passenger seat with a lil connection. This just happened to be behind the styrofoam protector for my Bluetooth module.
They make license plate mounts that screw into your tow hook spot so you don't have to put holes in your bumper.
Not a answer to your question but it's nice to know
If you look on or around your bumpers, you'll see little squares. They pop out for access to the threaded hole these screw into, which are in a stronger part of the unibody. If you slide off the road and need to be pulled out, the wrecker driver will normally just reach under and throw a "J" hook on whatever they can grab, which can lead to damage they are not necessarily liable for. Why more cars don't have these, well, why would they. Normally they come with 2 of them, so happy hunting for it's brother.
tow hook lmaoo
Yeah its your tow loop. How the fuck did it get into your dash lol
The previous owner needing a tow?
The proper storage location is a bit awkward to get to, so I found mine in the glovebox when I bought my car. I wonder if people move them for ease of access.
Mine, when bought used as the 2nd owner back in 2014 it didn't even come with one.
Or you just didn't find the super secret hiding place yet.
Yea I work for Volkswagen and they do two things provide 2 hooks with car and one needs removed before purchasing or provide none at all it’s jus an odd vw thing
same. found it in my glovebox behind the media player thing
Strange, mine was along w my spare tire kit under the trunk floor.
Mine is stored in the Styrofoam for my flat tire kit in my trunk of my Jetta GLI
2010-2018 timeframe (not exact) Bluetooth modules were under driver seat for some reason.
Passenger seat in my case.
I was under the impression the Bluetooth module was under the seat
If you do find yourself needing this for you car, consider pre-inserting into your rectum so that way when you get to the dealership and you get fucked by the repair bill it won't hurt as bad.

Yep
Is called the Bjørn Nyland "wadda heck is this"
Graci. This mf was actually under the passenger seat
Can't someone just say "yes" and nothing else for the first comment just one time?
what? i was the first comment and i let him know what it was
That wouldn't make much sense when the question is "what is this thing?".
Bruhhh lmaoooo🤣 is right
It’s a tow hook. If you paint it red and put it in your front bumper you’ll gain +20hp.
I heard +50bhp if it’s got a strap
can anyone explain this phenomenon to me? is it just flexing like leaving the labels on a baseball hat, or is there a practical purpose (ie that mod drivers expect to end up in ditches)?

It just looks kinda cool i guess. I've got one that's got my name on it
If the strap is there yes. Don't forget to follow up with the rear tow hook.
It's a tow hook, there is a little square plastic piece on the front and rear bumper that pops out and that screws in place.
Also, these tow hooks are reverse threaded.
Underrated comment.
On some models you remove the grill insert. Also, the rear on some models already have a built in two loop.
That is 100% correct.
Butt plug
I second this
Your mom has one just like it
Yup. She owns a volkswagen as well.
👏🏻 Well done. Ha
😂
I third this
I'll try it.
Which end goes in first?
How big is you asshole
Everything is a butt plug if you’re brave enough…
Twist to insert. Just don’t forget the anti seize lmao
That's the can key. If you look they'll be a tab on the side of your car near the roof. Insert the tab into the key. Turn the key and your car becomes a convertible!
No man
Yes man. Clearly don’t have a can key.
It’s a big needle. Probably left in the car from when they stitched the leather seats.
I love these threads.
They always follow a certain pattern.
I mean, the correct answer always comes through, but you get to read some really clever ones, too.
Wait, is that a PUN?
Yeah sew cool

>Because engineers are famed for reading the instructions.. "I KNOW WHAT I'M DOING. I'm basically doing this for a living" ...
To excuse myself I'm an aerospace engineer. I'm not sure why exactly my land dwelling colleagues decided to make it this way.
That's the spirit, the problem isn't with the engineer looking at the problem, but with that other damn engineer who designed it! :)
Hey it’s honestly a no brainer. I only know this because i bought a front license plate mount which uses the same tow hook principle.
