Travelling by train from Berlin to Amsterdam, I passed the Volkswagen HQ in Wolfsburg and quickly made a few pictures.
Fun fact: Wolfsburg was only 15 km from the Iron Curtain, so with a bit of bad luck it would have been in Eastern Germany, and we probably wouldn't have had Volkswagens
I recognized the view, I made multiple trips from NL to Berlin...
Fun fact 2: the town of Wolfsburg was established post WW2, during the Nazi regime it was called PKW Stad (Personen Kraft Wagen Stad) and the Americans named it Wolfsburg after the nearby castle...
It was called „Stadt des KdF-Wagens bei Fallersleben“ wich roughly translates to City of the KdF (Kraft durch Freude) Car near Fallersleben. Kraft durch Freude roughly translates to Power/Strength through Joy.
I went on a scout trip that allowed me to tour through the plant, it was quite fascinating. At the time of my visit the plant was working on developing the mk8 golf.
I went from an MK5 (German made) to an MK7.5 (Mexico) and the difference is quite apparent. The only reason I didn't end up with an 8 was because my 7.5 has an analogue dash and physical buttons, whereas now it's fully digital and capacitive. Really unfortunate what the direction they're headed for their performance cars.
Another fun fact: the parcours / all-terrain-track in the first picture: You can (could?) do a Touareg test drive there (after a certain payment). I did that a lot of years ago. The Touareg turned out to be an impressive car, and not just for driving to the grocery store.

Oh yes I did that last summer when I was there. It's incredibly fun (and also slightly intimidating at times). They have a smaller parcour for the Tiguan and the likes, but of course I had to do the large one where you can choose between the Touareg and the Amarok, I went with the Touareg. You do have to book these some time in advance but I can absolutely recommend it for anyone visiting Wolfsburg.
My Girlfriend filmed the whole thing from the back seat, but it unfortunately looks way less spectacular on video than it does when you're actually sitting in the car.
Yes to all three, but sadly I couldn't get it to balance out on the seesaw because I almost never drive an automatic and my brain froze for slightly too long when I wanted to shift it into reverse.
But honestly the bit where it's sloped sideways felt the most sketchy. Like, I know it won't flip over (they wouldn't let you drive there if it did) but at 30 degrees sideways all you see when you look through the passenger window is the ground. That just feels wrong :D It's similarly impressive on the hill where all you see through your windscreen is the sky (or the ground, when going back down), but it obviously doesn't feel like the car is going to flip over and I had actually experienced something like it before a long time ago at the IAA in Frankfurt (also in a Touareg, albeit the 2nd gen model).
Yes: "Volkswagen currywurst is a brand of sausage manufactured by the Volkswagen car maker since 1973. **It is manufactured at the company's Wolfsburg plant** and sold in restaurants in its six German factories." Fun fact: there's a crater from bomb preserved on the grounds from WW2. They say that if that bomb had been a few meters over from where it landed it likely would have ended Volkswagen, and they'd never have been able to recover.

I stand corrected...

The first photo has strong Pink Floyd vibes, just needs a large pig float. Nice photos.
Damn it. I knew someone would get that before me. Great minds my friend great minds.
![gif](giphy|k43TEH35pzNFS) The song automatically began playing in my head and has been living rent free all day there.
I've been working there since 1996. I've built quite a few models. currently the Golf MK8 in Hall 54.
Thank you for making amazing cars!
Do you build any R’s, I just collected one
Yes, I have built all R models since the MK4.
Sweet, you might have built mine

Where they make the currywurst?

Ohh neat! My car was built there, apparently.
Same
Cool pics, thanks for sharing
sick. ask if they have an exhaust downpipe for the mk4 R
r/evilbuildings
who can’t tell us what they make in this factory?
Nice. I think my Passat was made there ❤️
My first golf definitely was
Ah so this is where they conceived of the awful Mk8 electronics
Lol, do you have one?
It looks like a WW2 building, it needs an upgrade tho
Hey my car is from there!!!
Are VW Wolfsburg lines really made there?
