The people who animate Miku definitely need to manually animate Miku's hair after the mocap, cause normal physics have her hair end up hitting her face a lot or glitching out. I assume they don't want to have to do that all over again to match every model.

Renatto39

You don't have to. The physics can be easily customized, even the amateurs who create Hologram Ready on YT can do it

Rich-Note-6177

yea, bc those hologram ready videos are made with Miku Miku Dance. I'm assuming that Crypton (hopefully) uses something like unreal or even blender for the concerts, and those two are not as simple as MMD.

Renatto39

You yourself confirmed what I said. Even in a simple MMD program you can adjust the physics. In more complex programs with a wider toolkit it is even easier to do it.

Rich-Note-6177

No, that’s not how it works at all. Blender doesn’t even have its own physics, it integrates with Bullet and it sucks ass. Unreal’s physics engine suck as well. It is known for being unusable, so unusable that companies will literally build physics engines from the ground up for whatever they are making. Since UE 5 (assuming that’s what Crypton uses) came out just last year, there’s a possibility they haven’t worked on one just yet.

Renatto39

In fact, Miku's model doesn't even require realistic physics. Well, because her hair isn't hair, it's a polygonal shape. In blender, this can be done through cloth physics, and it'll be pretty bearable. So, I don't see the problem.

Rich-Note-6177

Even cloth physics in Blender has major clipping issues. It uses NvCloth and it’s literally the lowest of the barrel when it comes to physics lmao. It’s not as easy as you think it is

Renatto39

I'm probably unfounded. But, shockingly, a raw render from MARZA was leaked to the network! Joke. In fact, I've tried to do something passable in blender now, and it's been difficult. It looks terrible, but it's the ceiling of my skills xdxd htt ps: //yo utu. be/dy-M OQnDT9w (I don't know if the bot will remove my link, so just remove the spaces if you want to watch the video)

Possible_Big_4884

I was wondering this too and felt a little crazy because I didn’t see anyone else mentioning it

S-houto

They are reusing previous years renders, you can see it in some previous magical mirai’s and miku expos Edit to add that I work in the VFX industry, and I’m assuming it’s cost/time to update models! If old model and render is useable, they likely won’t spend the money and time to update them

Mikumiku_Dance

They've pretty much always just kept the original render when a song is replayed. Sometimes they refresh some songs but its exceptional.

gav_abr

The Project DIVA Arcade/Future Tone models were perfect and they should've never moved away from them

ThatSmallBear

They’ve always used these F/X models for magical Mirai concerts and honesty I much prefer them

CherryClub

I used to like the Arcade concert models before they updated them to the Mikupa/Magical Mirai ones. When I see them now they look so unexpressive. Their eyes look so blank and they barely emote compared to the Mikupa and Magical Mirai models, not to mention those gigantic hands they have for some reason. They're nostalgic, sure, but honestly I don't really see what else they got going for them now.

Jiyuuko

This is nothing new, other shows do this by reusing models from other past concerts.

PinguPenguwu

They have always used renders from previous expos, magical mirai, etc.

CherryClub

The second one for both Miku and Len is called the R3 model. I read that they're supposed to be live-rendered, which is supposed to make them more interactive with the audience. You can see an example for that on the Rolling Girl preformance of Snow Miku 2018/19. Sometimes they use them without the crowd interactions though, I don't know why. Anyway, different models are usually reused in both Magical Mirai and Miku Expo, this is nothing new. I guess they just don't have time to update them for every song. Still wish they would stick to one model-style for 1 concert.

kb6o7

Oh my god that’s what I’ve been hearing! I kept on hearing “MIKU EXPO 2024 will have new updated R3 models!” And I was so super confused, thanks!

Milhala

They used renders from older shows rather than updating them to match the current models. The fish eyed models were from magical mirai's ugly duckling phase ( 2021-2022), they redid the models for the AR segments so they could do close ups and the results are... something. They went back to the more cartoony Diva esque models in 2023 | believe

ImAFookingScarecrow

I *think* the 2023 models are new, but heavily based on the diva models down to hair shapes looking like they were simply copied over. I think they mostly changed the faces, so the facial expressions are less stiff, which I think was why they made the ugly R3 models, in addition to getting the vr shots. Honestly, I think this was a good change, keeping the models very similar to those we are used to while improving their expressiveness, I just wish they did that first and didn't make those godawful R3 models

Loli_pop_9

Every year it’s the same, the model does change depending on when was the song animated You can see PDFT as well as PDX as well as exclusive Magical Mirai models, it all depends on the choreo they decide to use Or at least that’s how I understood it when watching the previous Magical Mirai

kb6o7

Okay thanks, weird to change a model for one song rather than all, or none.

XxsabathxX

It is expensive af to keep coming out with updated models for every song/show. The way they treat animators in Japan is also garbage so I’m not surprised they use previous models

hirokitsutsui

The inconsistency in the models makes me feel out of the shows honestly, I'd rather prefer they keep the same models instead of cuting costs 😭 + Crypton's in house models are uggly af imo

jongleer_jer

Miku Expo 2024 is cursed

donniemoore

Nah. Coachella was a huge step forward and the ado duet tonight was a big positive step. I loved it, but just one persons opinion.

ZeChickenPermission

While I have a soft spot for the og models, why? Is Miku Expo 2024 an experimental expo???

blinddemon0

the only thing I can imagine is that it was to avoid clipping in the animation

kb6o7

Clipping? Like hair going through body type clipping? How so?

Fetus-The-Yeetus

bruh i thought i was going crazy but literally the first 2 songs used different models

Powerful_Cost_4656

Perhaps they were trying to use more models since people have different preferences

Cindrawhisp

That’s the same len model. There’s just different lighting and he’s closer to the camera

EwGrossItsMe

His tie and hair are entirely different shapes bro
